Basic formula in Numbers 09

Hi, guys, I try to make a basic formula in Numbers but do not find the way.
I just need put numbers in two columns and get the result of dividing or multiplying in the third column.
Say ColumnB : ColumnC = ColumnD
Can you please help me? Tried to find in the functions list on the Apple web-site but no way.
Thanks for help ))))

Both the Numbers '09 User Guide (which covers the use of the arithmetic operators ( + - * / ) and the iWork Formulas and Functions User Guide (which discusses QUOTIENT and the rest of the functions supported in Numbers and the other iWork applications) can be downloaded through the Help menu in Numbers.

  • Resulting Formula in 'Numbers' is 1 digit short!

It's kinda driving me insane so your help is greatly appreciated as I don't know what I'm doing wrong!
Basically, the resulting 'SUM' i.e. 'the resulting answer to selected cells' is incorrect, it's 1 digit short and it's just a very basic formula of adding-up the numbers in cells which is all I'm trying to achieve,... It seems utterly nonsensical as to why it's doing this.
As an example; 90.48 + 99.88 = 190.36 - Numbers however has decided irrevocably that the answer is 190.35.
    I mean, what the ****?
The problem however does not persist from a newly create blank 'Numbers' template so I'm thinking I've done something to screw-it-up but I can't think what,... and as I'm working on a fairly large spreadsheet, I really do not want to keep starting over, like I have nothing better to do than sit here recreating spreadsheets & repeating myself like there's no tomorrow 'watch out Bill Murray, here I come' every time 'Numbers' decides it wants to reinvent the numerical wheel.
Many thanks in advance for any assistance on what will hopefully be a fairly uncomplicated, undemanding, effortless and painless solution.

Thanks guys, that makes complete sense, I'm truly grateful for your responses, however, (apologies) having searched the forum, I'm still a little lost with how I actually 'ROUND' the figures up, there's indeed lots of 'ROUND' related subjects which I've checked out however I'm not fully grasping it, i.e. do I place the 'ROUND' formula within the 'result' cell or elsewhere, :/ (I know, please excuse my empty-headedness at this hour).
Nothing I try seems to work, I'm just completely missing it,... Although your responses are bang-on
I'd be so grateful if someone could provide me with an example of how I actually type those specific numbers and words into the cells to get the result I'm seeking, i.e. as in the example provided, a brief description, 90.48 + 99.88 resulting in 190.36 instead of 190.35 and how thats typed out in each cell to once again, get the outcome I require,...
It's imperative I get the spreadsheet figures matching the invoices.
Thank you, Thank You, Thank You!

  • How do you use a column title Ina formula in numbers

How do you use a column title in a formula in numbers ie. "cost" vs. F-1?

Have you tried here?   This isn't specifically a "Using iPad" question.

  • What formula in numbers can I use when I want to know how much 19 % is of the numbers from (let's say) e6 up to e27 ?  thank you

what formula in numbers can I use when I want to know how much 19 % is of the numbers from (let's say) e6 up to e27 ?  thank you

    thanks a lot jerry.
Can I ask you another question?
it works well but it gives me a number like  14,567
and I would like it if it will automatic round up an give me the number 15 in this case.
I do know the seperate folmula to round up numbers but can I combine the two formula's ?
    thank you and bye bye

  • Create Basic Timeline with Numbers

I haven't found any timeline software that I'm impressed with so far, so I've made it my goal to create a basic timeline with Numbers. My dates are years, not specific days. (It's for an Old Testament class so some examples of my dates are the Edict of Cyrus in 539 BC, Completion of the second temple in 515 BC, Death of King Uziah in 740 BC, etc.)
I'm using negative numbers for the year. I've plotted the events on a line graph, however I want to have each event labeled accordingly. Does anyone have an idea of how to do this? Thanks!
    ~Rick

Well, here's what I might do to create such a chart:
In my table I would have a column (B) that has the years of each event I would want to plot. Next to it, in column C, would be all zeros. I'd put the event names in column D, though this is only for reference, they won't be plotted. I would create a scatter chart from columns B and C.
In the chart inspector I would set the Y axis Min to be zero, the Max to be 1, no grid lines, not show the Y axis, no title or legend, etc. I would use the default + sign for the data points but I would perhaps make them larger in the Chart Inspector. I would make the data point lines wider in the Graphic Inspector so they show up better.
For the text, I would create a text box. In the Graphic Inspector I would turn it 90 degrees (vertical). I would copy this box and paste it repeatedly so there are a bunch of them to work with. I'd put event names in each one. Then I'd put them all on the graph above the correct years. You may have to hold down the command key while dragging the text boxes to be able to align each one exactly over a data point.
That's the basics. You might want to fancy it up a bit more. One thought would be to create a custom format for the X axis so the years display as "500BC" vs "-500". Do this in the table inspector in the Axis tab. Choose Custom and the custom format pane will open. Click on the plus sign and add the condition "if less than zero". Type BC at then end of the #,###. Right click on the #,### and click to remove the separator (the comma). You can change the "positive" dates in a similar fashion so they will have an AD (if you have any positive dates).

  • I am a teacher and I want a formula for Numbers that will average out A, B, C, D and E's of my students.

As the title says- I'm not much of a formula wizard and any help would be appreciated. Here's an example-
Student A receives a B, C, A, A, D, A for 6 assignments. I want them to average out at the end of the row, as well as an average on a separate page of summaries for all subjects that are assessed this way.
Ive seen it on an excel spreadsheet but was unable to look at the formula.
Please help as the semester starts in a week for us in Australia!
    Thanks

I basically want a formula where I can average Letters out to a B- or C+. Can I do this from just letters alone or do I need to assign numbers. Speaking to my curriculum coordinator, she said stick to LETTERS and see if we can sort out something for that as we don't officially report in numbers.
So that would mean I would need an average formula that would calculate B + C + C + D + A into a single Letter. I dont know if it is possible without using numbers. I hope you understand what I'm trying to explain. It's quite hard!
You say where the cutoffs are, is that A=90-100%?
Can you just use letters to make an average of the letter?
AVERAGE, which calculates the arithmetic mean of a set of values, works with numerical values.
On your posted layout, you have a table showing the letter equivalent of a percentage score:
    A score under 40 = E
    A score 40 or higher, but under 50 = D
    A score 50 or higher, but under 65 = C
    A score 56 or higher, but under 85 = B
    A score 85 or higher = A
Those numerical scores may be summed, averaged, and a letter grade assigned. With the specifications given in that table, the letter grade will not include a + or -.
Your layout includes nine numerical scores for the first student (all of which are well under 40. My assumption here is that each is the student's score out of the number in the same column of row 3 (ie, the first, 13, is 13 out of 14, the second is 10 out of 16, etc,)
    This raises a question:
Does each point noted contribute equally to the final average?
    Or
Does each quiz/exercise contribute equally to the final average?
For the letter grades to be averaged, you will need to set a specific numerical equivalent (not a range) for each letter grade.
For the letter grades and number grades to be combined into a single final letter grade, the numerical equivalents noted above must be chosen with that goal in mind, OR the numerical scores must be converted into letter grades, then reconverted into specific numerical equivalents for each letter grade, inserted into the set of (converted) letter grades, averaged, then reconverted to the equivalent letter grade.
As you can see, there are yet a few hurdles to overcome.

    Barry

  • Having trouble with array formula in Numbers

I should start right away by stating that I am very new to using numbers and array formulas, so potentially I am missing something very basic.
But, I am having trouble creating a progessive array formula that will allow me to charge users of a system different rates depending on their volume of money going through the system. For instance for their first 10,000 it will be chanrged at 2%, but between 10,000 and 150,000 it will be 1.5%, etc.
The formula I am using now is =SUM(IF(IF,B15>=B8:B11,B8:B11-B7:B10,B15-B7:B10+.001)>0,IF(B15>=B8:B11,B8:B11-B 7:B10,B15-B7:B10+.001),0)*D7:D10).
Where B15 is the total money; B7:B10 are the values where a new percentage rate starts, and B11 is just a maximum value; and D7:D10 is the list of corresponding percentages.
    Thanks in advance!
    Kyla

    HI Kyla,
Following up on Jerry's suggestion, here's an example that may do what you're looking for.
Main is a table containing several examples of possible amounts and the related charges. Note that for ease of seeing the results of calculations, each amount is either at or 100 above a threshold value at which rates change.
The Rates table lists the threshold values in column A, the rate charged for amounts from that value to the next threshold value in column B, and the total amount charged for amounts up to the that threshold in column C.
For example, an amount of one million one hundred (in whatever currency unit is being used) would be charged 11,675 on the first one million, and 0.75 on the one hundred exceeding that threshold, for the total shown in Main::C10.
    Formulas:
    Rates::C2:  (entered value) 0
    Rates::C3, and filled down: =C2+(A3-A2)*B2
    Main::C2, and filled down: =LOOKUP(B2,Rates :: A,Rates :: C)+(B2-LOOKUP(B2,Rates :: A,Rates :: A))*LOOKUP(B2,Rates :: A,Rates :: B)
Each of the three LOOKUP functions will find the largest amount in Rates, column A that is less than or equal to the amount in B2 (of Main, the table containing the formula), and return the amount from the same row of Rates and the specified column.
The first LOOKUP returns the amount due on the part of of the amount in Main::B2 up to the highest threshold amount reached, the second returns that threshold amount, which is subtracted from the amount in Main::B2 to determine the 'marginal amount', which is then multiplied by the rate, returned by the third LOOKUP function. That result is added to the amount returned by the first LOOKUP, and the result placed in Man::C2.

  • Work around for Excel "Array Formula" in Numbers?

I have an Excel spreadsheet which I have built over many years to manage maintenance tasks of my boat. I would like to convert this to run on Numbers. Unfortunately I can't find a work-around for Excel's "Array Formulas".
The column headers of my spreadsheet contain maintenance tasks (plus data on how frequently by days or engine hours these jobs need to done). When I complete a maintenance task, I log the date and engine hours in a new row with an "x" to signify that the job is done. Excel then looks up the date/engine hours when each job was last done (ie the lowest "x") and then uses conditional formatting to highlight the column headers of which jobs are overdue. Is there a work around for this in Numbers?

It not clear from your post, but I get the impression you are inquiring about Numbers for OSX. This is the iOS iWork forum. You may want to repost here: https://discussions.apple.com/community/iwork/numbers
If I'm wrong, and you are asking about Numbers for iOS, these links may help: http://help.apple.com/numbers/ipad/2.2/#/tan5ca02385

But Numbers for iOS does not fully support conditional text.

  • Formulas in Numbers 3.0.1 files not converting to Excel

When I save a Numbers file as Excel the formulas do not work in Excell, I have to export it as a iWork 09 file, open it in iWork 09 and save it as Excel. Seems crazy to release this to the public without the function working?

    Hi Badunit,
Australian (non-US) exported to Excel then reopened in Numbers 3
Rows 1,2 and 10 added (Row 2 is Table name in horizontally merged cells), but the currency and formula work .

  • Creating formulas in Numbers - quick key to reference cells

Former Excel person, moving over to Numbers -- very simple question on how I can use keystrokes to reference cells when creating a formula, rather than typing in the cell or using the mouse. In Excel would just type "=", then could use the arrows keys to move around and go into the first cell for the formula, type "+", then arrow around to the second cell and hit Enter.

As Yvan has pointed out, Numbers offers an alternative to large spreadsheets, that being multiple tables & sheets. As you point out, moving around a large spreadsheet is not fast, even when using cursor keys (which I am assuming are the same thing as arrow keys, there being just the one set on my keyboard).
Assuming you can break your large spreadsheets down into smaller ones, you may find that navigation is remarkably quick because you can click on any table in any sheet to immediately jump to another one (even when creating cell or range references) rather than having to transverse large areas of a single spreadsheet one cell at a time.
If you are interested in exploring this approach, you may find my comments in the thread Generating values for grades useful as a description of how this can be applied when creating cell references in Numbers.
It may not be the right approach for your needs, but unless you know about it, you can't compare it to other approaches, right?

  • Timesheet formulas in numbers '09 with multiple Start/Stop columns

    Hi there you amazing people
I am creating a timesheet which will have the date, start time, stop time but also 3/4 start/stop times for breaks.
I would like to have formulas that allow me to enter as many or as little info as I need (sometimes there are no breaks and sometimes there will be several) and still give me total hours works in that day.
Apoliges if my quiery isn't clear or this has been answered before, I have had a good look!

    Hi Lil,
Numbers '09 will think for you. Start with an empty table with one Header Row and enter the headings for your work day:
In Cell A2, enter the Start Time as 8 am (not 8am)
In Cell B2, enter Morning Coffee as 15 m (not 15m)
    In Cell C2, Lunch is 1 h (not 1h)
In Cell D2, Afternoon Tea is 15 m (not 15m)
In Cell E2, Stop Time is 5 pm (not 5pm)
Please note the spaces (for example, 8 am, not 8am) then the cells will automatically format as Date-and-Time or Duration.
Formula in F2 (and copy down) is
    =E2-A2-B2-C2-D2
Tip: When you enter a Time, it carries a Date with it. The Date-and-Time format in Numbers is exactly that. A Date and a Time from 1 January 1904 (the starting date that Apple uses as the base date).
Call back if this does not help.
    Regards,
    Ian

  • Viewing formulas in Numbers '08?

Does anyone know how to toggle formulas in a Numbers document on and off? Have to deliver some homework in math, and they have to have two versions of each document; one regular with the answers and one wich shows the formulas. Only problem is that I dont know have to toggle it on and off
I know in Excel in Windows its ctrl+J to toggle it, but how do you do this in Numbers?
    Thanks in advance!

Just mark the cell format as "text".

  • Converting Excel formulas in Numbers

I am new to Numbers and have an Excel Spreadsheet that I've used previously that calculates the best 4 scores from golfers over a 10 week period. In Excel I used =sum(LARGE[e2:n2,{1,2,3,4}]) but when I use it in Numbers I get a Syntax Error message. Is there anyone who can help me convert the Excel formula so that it works in Numbers.

Numbers does not use excels array functions so this will probably work:
    =SUM(LARGE(E2:N2, 1), LARGE(E2:N2, 2), LARGE(E2:N2, 3), LARGE(E2:N2, 4))

  • Creating formulas in Numbers

I want to create a spreadsheet that divides time by intervals within a track. For example, I want the top row to display times and the first column to display distance by 200 meter intervals. Is there a formula for that?
If a track runner wanted to run at a 6:00 pace, what would the time break down be for each 200 meter interval? What type of formula could I use for that. Of course 6:00 is easily divisible but not as much for me once we get into 6:13 pace, etc...

    Betsy,
If the 6 minute pace is for a mile (I'm just guessing) then that defines how far a runner runs any fixed distance.
Here is a way to do this:
B5 contains the distance over which you want to get the check points and
B6 contains the duration over which a runner needs to cover the distance (duration means enter as "6m 0s" for 6 minutes 0 seconds)
row 1 contains checkpoints numbers 0 through 8
    B2=B1×$B$5÷MAX(1:1)
this is shorthand for select cell B2 then type (or copy and paste from here) the formula:
    =B1×$B$5÷MAX(1:1)
select cell B2, copy, select cells B2 thru J2, paste
    B3=B2÷($B$5÷DUR2SECONDS($B$6))
    select cell B2, copy
select cells B2 thru J3, paste
the results in row three are in seconds

  • Creating custom formulas in Numbers V3

I am trying to create a MAXIF formula, in order to determine the maximum value (max-values) in a range of values (test-values) that are associated with a certain category (condition).  The formula would be similar in concept to SUMIF or AVERAGEIF, except that the result is the maximum, rather than the sum or the average. Any help appreciated.

Hi Yellowbox. I tried your solution: I started with my original table, which has 52 weeks and many $ values for each week. Here is a short version: (not sure how you got your table to look like it does)
    Date
    Week

After wrestling with the formula editor to try to get the paste to work, I gave up.  So, Unless you have another solution, the only thing I know to do is to ensure the weeks in my original table are sorted to ascend from 1 to 52, then select all the transactions associated with each week, then read off the maximum that pops up at the bottom, and then manually enter week's maximum into a new table. But in the end both solutions seem a lot of work. The elegant "sort by category" option from Numbers '09 would do all this in seconds. Why did Apple remove it?
