Basic TCP and file descriptor question

Hi all,
I have DS 5.1 sp 1 and Solaris 8.
how does the configurable "nsslapd-maxdescriptors" and "ulimit -n" works ?
I assume that :
1. nsslapd-maxdescriptors <= "ulimit -n".
Current configuration is, nsslapd-maxdescriptors = 4096 and "ulimit -n" = 256. There are "currentconnections: 3212". These crazy connections is the "connection pool" from weblogic and others. I still able to browse using "ldapsearch" and similiar tool like "ldapbrowser".
2. "tcp_conn_req_max_q" is not directly related to these parameters, since it describes concurrent connections. My "tcp_conn_req_max_q" = 128.
"nsslapd-threadnumber", (=512 currently). How is this related to "nsslapd-maxdescriptors" and "tcp_conn_req_max_q" ? It this threadnumber per client connection perspective or Sun DS perspective.
can some1 shed a light on this ? or give me some reference to read.
thanks alot,

got it !
It's all in reference guide.... should have ransack SUN repository first....
cheers

  • Time Machine and File Vault question

I just completed a clean install of OS x mavericks and then used my time machine back up to restore the mac.
The whole process was confusing for many reasons and I just want to get some clarification/verification on my next actions.
When I enter time machine preferences and click select disk. It gives me two choices. One in the group Back Up Disks and One in available disks. The confusing I have is that it is the same external hd. So which should I pick if I want to keep my original time machine backups?
The other question I have is, this whole journey started with me wanting to turn on file vault. I am using a late 2012 Mac Mini updated to Mavericks came with Mountain Lion.
Should I be able to use both an encrypted time machine (external hd) and file vault?
    Thanks for the help.

The difference is that do yo want to combine the backus you made before with the previous backups (group Back Up Disks) or start a whole new backup (available disks). Either option will retain the previous backups unless you overtly delete them. I would select that later to start a new set of backups.

  • Solaris file descriptor question

    Hi,
We have an application on Solaris 2.6 and
the shell in which the server runs has a
file descriptor limit of 1024. What does
this mean? Does this mean that every process
from the shell will have 1024 fds? What
is the maximum # of fds that a solaris 2.6
    system can provide?
When I run "sysdef", I get:
    ffffffff:fffffffd file descriptors
How do I interpret this line?
Is this 64K - some value?
If system limit is 64K and if each
shell has 1024, how are the fds allocated
    to the shells?
    What I mean is:
say I have 3 shells each with descriptor
limit of 1024, then is the distribution
something like 1024-2047 for shell 1,
    2048 - 3071 for shell 2 (i.e. 3072) and
    3072 - 4095 for shell 3?
Appreciate any explanation of this anyone
    can offer.
    thanks,
    mshyam

    Hi There,
About File Descriptors and Their Limitations:
All versions of Solaris (including Solaris 7 64-bit) have a default "soft" limit of 64 and a default "hard" limit of 1024.
Processes may need to open many files or sockets as file descriptors. Standard I/O (stdio) library functions have a defined limit of 256 file descriptors as the fopen() call, datatype char, will fail if it can not get a file descriptor between 0 and 255. The open() system call is of datatype int, removing this limitation. However, if open() has opened 0 to 255 file descriptors without closing any, fopen() will
not be able to open any file descriptors as all the low-numbered ones have been used up. Applications that need to use many file descriptors to open a large number of sockets, or other raw files, should be forced to use descriptors numbered above 256. This allows system functions such as name services, to work as they depend upon stdio routines.
(See p 368 "Performance and Tuning - Java and the Internet").
There are limitations on the number of file descriptors
available to the current shell and its descendents. (See the ulimit man page). The maximum number of file descriptors that can be safely used for the shell and Solaris processes is 1024.
This limitation has been lifted for Solaris 7 64-bit which can be 64k (65536).
Therefore the recommended maximum values to be added to /etc/system are:
    set rlim_fd_cur=1024
    set rlim_fd_max=1024
To use the limit command with csh:
    % limit descriptors 1024
To use the ulimit command with Bourne or ksh:
    $ ulimit -n 1024
However, some third-party applications need the max raised. A possible recommendation would be to increase rlim_fd_max, but not the default (rlim_fd_cur). Then rlim_fd_cur can be raised on a per-process basis if needed, but the higher setting
for rlim_fd_max doesn't affect all processes.
I hope this helps your understanding about systemwide file descriptor max limit in conjunction with shell and per process file descriptor limits.

  • ID Mac, save as and file extension questions

I'm converting a bunch of Quark files over to ID and have a few niggles that I need help with:
    1. Can ID be configured so that it doesn't save the .indd extension every time (when writing a PostScript file as well).
    2. Every time the Save/Save As dialog opens it's a small window & I have to drag the corner to enlarge, is there a way to make it stick?
    TIA,

No, nor should you. This isn't OS9.
Those file extension should be left alone.

  • IMovie music rights and file size questions

    1. I'm producing a movie of videos and still photos from a recent vacation strictly for personal family use, not commercial. Is there any violation at all of copyrights if I add songs or loops from a commercial artists music CD? Also, I'm assuming no rights problem with using in my home movie the Garage Band loops that came with my iLife'06.
    2. I'm wondering about the file size of my movie so far. It is 26 minutes long and 6.5 GB! I'm guessing I'll end up with about 40 minutes. What is the compression procedure so I can later record the movie to a typical 4.9 GB DVD disc? BTW I'm using an external LaCie burner to get around problems with the 2X DVD burner in my 2002 G4 Quicksilver.
    Many thanks in advance.
    Raymon

The "personal use" issue (in the U.S. anyway) was resolved in the users favor when the first VHS recorders started shipping.
There are also millions of files that are "royalty free" that be used in any fashion.
Don't worry about the file size of your iMovie project. iDVD only uses the "time" (up to 2 hours) and will handle the compression automatically.

  • Workflow, capturing, and file sizes question

I currently use FCE strictly for DV work, but need to upgrade to either FCE HD or FCP for use with HDV.
My workflow now consists of capturing to a scratch disk, then archiving the captured DV file to an external HD for backup purposes and storing the original tape in a safe location.
With FCE HD, can I similarly archive the captured HDV file prior to transcoding to AIC? Or, must I archive the much larger transcoded file? I would perfer to archive the smaller file, and then retranscode it if necessary to work on the project again at a later date (similarly to how I can now just copy the original captured DV file back and reopen the project).
    Thanks,
    Randy

    Tom,
Thanks for the info. I know that FCE HD cannot EDIT HDV natively, but since the transcoding is not done in real time during capture, I wondered if the captured HDV data was stored in a temporary file until transcoded (and if the temporary file could be archived).
Unless FCE HD can export to MPEG-2 with minimal loss, it sounds like I would need to archive the AIC file, or use FCP to edit native HDV and export.

  • Bash, awk and file descriptors

    Hi guys,
I'm thinking about this piece of command lines:
    [user@host ~]$ echo "first word" > test
    [user@host ~]$ cat test
    first word
    [user@host ~]$ { rm ./test && awk -F' ' '{ print $2,$1 }' > ./test; } < ./test
    [user@host ~]$ cat test
    word first
    [user@host ~]$ { awk -F' ' '{ print $2,$1 }' > ./test; } < ./test
    [user@host ~]$ cat test
    [user@host ~]$ ls -l test
    -rw-r--r-- 1 user user 0 17 apr 22.06 test
    I wonder why:
    { rm ./test && awk -F' ' '{ print $2,$1 }' > ./test; } < ./test
works as I expect (the file "test" have words in reverse order), while instead:
    { awk -F' ' '{ print $2,$1 }' > ./test; } < ./test
give a file "test" empty, with size 0.
Why and how the leding "rm" make the difference?
    Thanks

  • Basic In and Out Points Questions

I captured one long continuous segment of video. Previously, I used the razor tool to chop it up and then I used the arrow tool to trim it.
I am now trying to use In and Out points to create my edits.
1.) If I understand correctly, you can only have 1 In and 1 Out point per clip, is tis correct?
2.) If so, does this mean that the captured video segment needs to be chopped into pieces in order to use In and Out points over the duration of the video?
3.) If so, what do you generally do to determine where/when to make the razor cuts?
    Thanks.

  • SAVING PSD  and FILE RESOLUTION QUESTION

I have built a business card file that my printer says does not have enough resolution.  When I check image size, it appears correct to me.  It states the original size is 2.25in x 3.75 in at 300 resolution.  However, as I look at the saved file, it shows .psd @ 66.7% (CMYK/8).  Is that my problem. Should the file be saved at 100% (CMYK/8)?  If so, how do I do that?  Thank you. Tom

What is the specific error that your printer is giving you? Even if the file was a terrible resolution, the printer should still print a terrible picture. So it is odd that it won't print at all.

  • [SOLVED] Maximun TCP open connections and Open File Descriptors

    Hi,
back when I was using XP I needed to patch a system file to increase max amount of open TCP connections - you surely know about this. I'm wondering how do I do the same in GNU/Linux and if that's real important here.
Also, by default open files are set to 1024, how do I change that? I'm running x86_64 + KDE SC 4.4.2
    Last edited by martin77 (2010-04-12 04:17:27)

    Thanks for replying.
I mean "open file handler" or in a better GNU/Linux terminology "open file descriptors" aka the maximun number of files that can be accessed at a given time.
For instance, VMWare will need you increase them to 4096 to work properly - and I presume something in the order of 5120 would be ok.
Following The Arch Way, already found the solution and want to share it with all of you fellow n00bs:
    1. you need to open for edit /etc/security/limits.conf file with root privileges
    2. at the end of the file add:
    * soft nofile nn
    * hard nofile nn
where nn is the number of open file descriptors you want. I set them to 8196 (probably too high) so for instance it should read:
    * soft nofile 8192
    * hard nofile 8192
Read the embedded help for a better understanding of this crucial configuration file.
As usual, thank you very much to this great community, devs and users, best!

  • TCP and LCP files location...

Observing that Lr displays only very few camera calibration profiles and also very few couples camera/lens profiles (for the brand of camera's I use), I made a thorough search of all ".TCP" and ".LCP" files existing in my computer.
Wow ! ... these files are located in a lot of different places !    This certainly from successive updates.
But, I imagine that Lr5 refers only to one "specific directory", showing only the the profiles stored in it.
Here all the directories path where I've found those profiles (Win7-64):
LCP files : by us Program Files = Program (not Program Files (x86)
    C:\Program Fifes\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 5.7\Resources\LensProfiles\1.0\(Brand name)\LCP Files
    C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Adobe\CameraProfiles\Lens Correction\LCP Files
    C:\Users\(User Name)\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\CameraRaw\LensProfileDefault\LCP Files
    C:\Users\(User Name)\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\CameraRaw\LensProfiles\LCP Files
    C:\Users\(User Name)\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\CameraRaw\LensProfiles\1.0\LCP Files
    C:\Users\(User Name)\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\CameraRaw\LensProfiles\1.0\Downloaded\LCP Files
    C:\Users\(User Name)\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Lightroom\LensProfiles\LCP Files
    C:\Users\(User Name)\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Lightroom\LensProfileDefaults\LCP Files
    DCP files :
    C:\Programmes\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 5.7\Resources\CameraProfiles\Adobe Standart\
    C:\Programmes\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 5.7\Resources\CameraProfiles\Camera\(Brand name/Camera model)\ \DCP Files
    C:\Users\(User Name)\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Lightroom\Color Profiles\DCP Files
Now... "where" the profiles (involved in the latest version of Lr5) have to be located ?

What to do if a profile doesn't exist in this "good" directory, but well in another (perhaps from a previous version). Are they usable under Lr5-7 ?

What to do with the directories not more used by Lr5-7 ?
    Many thanks for your answers.

    Many thanks, Bob
    Fm Julieanne Kost's :
Lightroom reads camera and lens profiles "from several locations"...
If you use the Adobe Lens Profile Creator utility to create your own lens and camera profiles, Lightroom installs them here:
    X:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 4.2 RC\Resources\CameraProfiles\
    X:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 4.2 RC\Resources\LensProfiles\
Well, if I understand, the correct paths at home are :
    LCP files → C:\Program Fifes\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 5.7\Resources\LensProfiles\1.0\(Brand name)
    DCP files → C:\Programmes\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 5.7\Resources\CameraProfiles\Adobe Standart
    +             → C:\Programmes\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 5.7\Resources\CameraProfiles\Camera\(Brand name/Camera model)
Could the other directories found in my PC been used by other application(s) ? (I also have PS)
    Stay 2 other questions:
    1. What to do if a profile doesn't exist in a "correct directory", but well in another (perhaps from previous versions).
Are they usable under Lr5-7 ?
May I transfer them into the right place for Lr ?
    and
    2. What to do with the directories not more used by Lr5-7 ?
    Thanks for complementary answers.

This is an old post but I'm going to reply to it for future reference of others.
Please ignore the first reply to this thread... by default /etc/rctladm.conf doesn't exist, and you should never use it. Just put it out of your mind.
So, then... by default, a process can have no more than 256 file descriptors open at any given time. The likelyhood that you'll have a program using more than 256 files very low... but, each network socket counts as a file descriptor, therefore many network services will exceed this limit quickly. The 256 limit is stupid but it is a standard, and as such Solaris adheres to it. To look at the open file descriptors of a given process use "pfiles <pid>".
So, to change it you have several options:
    1) You can tune the default threshold on the number of descriptors by specifying a new default threshold in /etc/system:
    set rlim_fd_cur=1024
    2) On the shell you can view your limit using 'ulimit -n' (use 'ulimit' to see all your limit thresholds). You can set it higher for this session by supplying a value, example: 'ulimit -n 1024', then start your program. You might also put this command in a startup script before starting your program.
    3) The "right" way to do this is to use a Solaris RCTL (resource control) defined in /etc/project. Say you want to give the "oracle" user 8152 fd's... you can add the following to /etc/project:
    user.oracle:101::::process.max-file-descriptor=(priv,8152,deny)
Now log out the Oracle user, then log back in and startup.
You can view the limit on a process like so:
    prctl -n process.max-file-descriptor -i process <pid>
In that output, you may see 3 lines, one for "basic", one for "privileged" and one for "system". System is the max possible. Privileged is the limit by which you need to have special privs to raise. Basic is the limit that you as any user can increase yourself (such as using 'ulimit' as we did above). If you define a custom "priviliged" RCTL like we did above in /etc/projects it will dump the "basic" priv which is, by default, 256.
For reference, if you need to increase the threshold of a daemon that you can not restart, you can do this "hot" by using the 'prctl' program like so:
    prctl -t basic -n process.max-file-descriptor -x -i process <PID>
The above just dumps the "basic" resource control (limit) from the running process. Do that, then check it a minute later with 'pfiles' to see that its now using more FD's.
    Enjoy.

  • Basic file movement question?

I'm on DW CS4.  Have a very basic question regarding file movement that I can't seem to resolve.  In the files panel on the right I have created a folder.  Within that folder I have saved a bunch of files with the same name but different numbers after them.  When I go into the folder to access one of the files they never stay in the numeric order I have assigned to them.  I try and drag the numbered files up or down to get them back into numeric order but it doesn't seem to work.  Can someone please explain this basic step in file management to get the files to line up where I want them in the file category on the right?  Thanks for your time.

Besided sorting, when using numbers as part of the file name, you need to make sure you have at least two digits if your are going to have more than ten files. Start numbering with 01, 02, 03, 04 and so on. If not, the files will sort like the following:
    file1
    file10
    file2
    file20
    file21
    file3
    file32
    file4
And if you have more than a hundred, you will need to start with 001.
    Hope this makes sense.
