Basic tutorial solaris required

Hello,
I like to understand the basics of Solaris Unix....being able to install a program, unpack tars, basic unix scripting. Which training can you advice...I prefer an(y) online course something like the online Java tutorial if such is available.
Would appreciate any reference here
Regards
Pierre

Robert,
You don't give very much to go on.
What kind of computer did you install Solaris 10 on?
Did you install the x86 version of Solaris on a Wintel machine,
or a sparc version on a workstation or server?
Did you say the system was networked when you did the install?
Can the system communicate with any other systems?
Is this the only system connected to your router?
Have you looked at your browser settings?
There are a number of possible answers to your problem.

  • Problem with basic tutorial!

    I am following this very basic tutorial:
    http://xstream.codehaus.org/tutorial.html
    But when I parse this xml:
    <person>
    <firstname>Joe</firstname>
    <lastname>Walnes</lastname>
    <phone>
    <code>123</code>
    <number>1234-456</number>
    </phone>
    <fax>
    <code>123</code>
    <number>9999-999</number>
    </fax>
    </person>
    to the Person object I get the error:
    [Fatal Error] :1:1: Content is not allowed in prolog.
    Exception in thread "main" com.thoughtworks.xstream.io.StreamException: : Content is not allowed in prolog.
    This is the code:
    public class Person {
    private String firstname;
    private String lastname;
    private PhoneNumber phone;
    private PhoneNumber fax;
    public class PhoneNumber {
    private int code;
    private String number;
    public void runXStream(){
    String pathToXml = "testP.xml";
    XStream xstream = new XStream(new DomDriver());
    xstream.alias("person", Person.class);
    xstream.alias("phonenumber", PhoneNumber.class);
    Person p = (Person)xstream.fromXML(pathToXml);
    What am I missing?

    xstream.alias("person", Person.class);
    xstream.alias("phonenumber", PhoneNumber.class);I'm not familiar with the API you're using, but from looking at the above, I'm guessing this means:
    "Any tag named 'person' should be de-serialized into a Person object"
    Ok, fine.
    And
    "Any tag named "phonenumber" should be de-serialized into a PhoneNumber object"
    Well, I see no "phonenumber" tag in your xml. I see "phone" though.
    And what about "fax"?

  • I am new to Garage Band and was previously using sound forge on my PC to edit music for my Figure Skating students.  Is there a basic tutorial I can read to get started, nothing seems the same.

    I am new to Mac and Garage Band and was wondering if I can use this program to edit existing tracks downloaded from i-tunes etc.  Is there a basic tutorial to get me started?  I edit music for figure skaters so it is relatively basic, fading in/out, cutting and pasting etc.

    use an automation curve for this, open GB's help and search for "curve"

  • Need very basic tutorial on transparency

    A bit of a novice on the topic of transparency so could use a
    link to a basic tutorial. Specifically, I'm working on a Fireworks
    graphic that will eventually end up on a site. The content is a
    table with text. The color of the content is white and the
    background on the site is black. I intend the background on the
    image to be transparent.
    When converting the png file to a gif I have played with the
    options including index and alpha transparency and noticed the
    matte feature.
    This is the area of tutoring I could use (i.e. getting a
    crisper transition between the image and the background). I'm also
    curious how the anti-aliasing settings in FW relate.
    Thanks

    The matte feature is precisely what gets the crisper
    transition. With a GIF,
    it's absolutely imperative. See some examples here:

  • New user needs the most basic tutorial

    New to the mac world and spending most of my time looking at help menus.  can anyone reccomend a most basic tutorial to help me find my way around the screen .

    Here is also an independent site many people find helpful:
    http://macmost.com
    though it's a bit daunting at first glance due to the many options (it used to be simpler). Another site you may find to offer some helpful resources:

    You are not doing anything wrong. The January 2014 update of Photoshop CC added the option to embed OR link Smart Objects. Until this Photoshop CC update, Smart Objects were always embedded in the Photoshop document. Although it made the file size larger, it was like a built-in backup plan because any placed files were included in the document. Now you have the option of embedding or linking the Smart Object. Linking references the file rather than actually copying it to your current file. In terms of your small tutorial, choose Embed.

    I just recievecd my first DSLR and I'm looking for a video tutorial that will take me through the basics of how to use the camera. • WO basic start date - requirement date

    Good morning folks,
    Would anyone be able to shed some light on any config that would be suitable for the following:
    The materials are assigned to a task list that is then assigned to a plan.  That plan is then scheduled and the work orders are generated.
    When the materials are added to the work order their requirement date is automatically assigned as the work order basic start date - can this requirement date be pulled from the scheduled dates instead?
    The problem is that the material may not be required at the beginning of the WO, so the defaulted basic start date of the WO would not be the way forward.
    Thanks
    Mantas

    hi Mantas
    you can set in scheduling parameters with following possibilities
    <b>Path Plant maintenance and customer service->Maintenance and service order->scheduling->set scheduling parameter</b>
    1)The basic dates are adjusted and the dependent requirements are scheduled for the start dates of the relevant operations.
    2)The basic dates are not adjusted and the dependent requirements are scheduled for the start dates of the relevant operations.
    3)The basic dates are adjusted and the dependent requirements are scheduled for the order basic start date.
    4)The basic dates are not adjusted and the dependent requirements are scheduled for the order basic start date.
    so when you add the components you have to assign the operations,after selecting the operation you can change the operation date, after you change the operation dates,the material scheduled dates will be changed to the operation date
    (using the option <b>1</b>)

  • Basic tutorial/glossary

    I've recently been moving from an old beige G3/OS9 to an iBook G4/OS10.4, and discovered that all the people who told me that OSX was "just like" OS9 were lying through their teeth! I swear, I think I'm trying to grok a recent version of Windoze!
    OK, there's a few things I've figured out, and there are some things I like about OSX, but I'm freakin' lost trying to do simple things to get up to speed, to understand the new terminology, or how the system is organized! (And I've worked with computers for >30 years!)
    I've tried to find answers in the Apple Forums, in the iBook manual and help files to no avail (for example I can't believe that they refer to such things as "Smart Folders", and don't explain what the **** they are or what they do!). I spend forever trying to FIND where things are organized on the hard drive (simple in OS 6 through 9). I can't access the info I'm used to in the AppleMenu and Finder drop-downs, I can't understand all the icons in the new Finder window, and I've probably set up some things based on how I used to organize my Macs that have caused me problems in the new OS.
    Where can I find a SIMPLE tutorial and glossary??? (The only things I find seem to assume one is upgrading from 10.3 to 10.4, and OSX is **** near a new species compared with Classic.)
    Thanks!

    The dock is kind of handy in that any significant programs show up in the dock when they are running, even "Classic" programs. If you have Classic running it will show up there too.
    If you want to see everything you have running, open up the application utility called Activity monitor (but you'll probably close it again immediately after seeing everything on there).
    Note that if you are running OS9 programs that involve close interaction with system level activities that some of these no longer work under Classic since in Classic the system is really under the control of OSX. Standard problem things may be programs, special cards, or printers, programs that rely upon close interaction with Quicktime but can't handle working with the new version. Fortunately there aren't too many of the Quicktime issues. I sometimes use Movie Player 2.5.1 which is basically Quicktime Pro vintage OS8.1 and it still seems to work okay.
    If you plan on doing a lot of things in Classic you might want to keep Activity monitor in mind because I find Classic on occasion gets stuck and this is evidenced in seeing BlueEnvironment taking up a huge chunk of CPU activity. I run a utility called Xstat menu on my computer which displays CPU, network activity, temperature (bunch of stuff) at the top.

  • Solaris requirements for SO Studio 7 installation

    Is a full Solaris installation required in order for the SO Studio 7 to install correctly?
    I imagine a full Solaris install would get this install to load correctly, but would like to load just what is needed to install the compiler.
    Background:
    I couldn't get the software to install. Previous versions of the Sun CC that I
    have dealt with required the X libraries to be installed - we prefer
    to have the machines on which we compile our packages to have the absolute
    minimum in the way of software so that we can be sure they will install
    correctly on all of our servers without any unknown prerequisites.
    However, we dealt with it and installed the libraries.
    This new version of the Sun CC appears to require an almost complete
    Sun CDE in order to install,, and we believe in the
    philosophy of -not- installing software on machines that will not be used.
    We're even installing via the -nodisplay option.
    Sun ONE Studio installer
    Copying the installer files to temporary location - /tmp/sos_install_14039
    Extracting JVM ...
    Invoking Installer ...
    ./installer[187]: /usr/dt/bin/dtaction: not found

    See the URL:
    http://wwws.sun.com/software/sundev/suncc/index.html
    Is says that S1S7 requires a Developer or Full cluster
    OS install, which I assume includes all of CDE. You
    may be running into this by installing from the
    "meerged" S1S7 with S1S4, the java IDE. If you
    really only want a text based environment, you may
    need to install the S1S7 without the java IDE and
    use an editor of your own choice. Also note, that
    Workshop also depended on CDE. It is still possible
    that the Installer depends on CDE even though you
    install in text only. Bottom line, a full OS install
    appears to be required.

  • Basic System Admin Requirements

    Apologies all, I'm pretty new to OS X and MAC generally but I'm wondering if there are any basic system administration tasks that your average user should be doing to maintain optimum performance and reliability of the system.
    I recall many years ago as a SVR 3.2 admin that file system maintenance, performance tuning, user admin etc. were staple parts of the job however I haven't done this in a long time and am looking for basic pointers to what you need to do to maintain OS X.
    Thanks in advance.

    Kappy's Personal Suggestions for OS X Maintenance
    For disk repairs use Disk Utility. For situations DU cannot handle the best third-party utilities are: Disk Warrior; DW only fixes problems with the disk directory, but most disk problems are caused by directory corruption; Disk Warrior 4.0 is now Intel Mac compatible. TechTool Pro provides additional repair options including file repair and recovery, system diagnostics, and disk defragmentation. TechTool Pro 4.5.2 is Intel Mac compatible; Drive Genius is similar to TechTool Pro in terms of the various repair services provided. The current version, 1.5.1, is Intel Mac compatible.
    OS X performs certain maintenance functions that are scheduled to occur on a daily, weekly, or monthly period. The maintenance scripts run in the early AM only if the computer is turned on 24/7 (no sleep.) If this isn't the case, then an excellent solution is to download and install a shareware utility such as Macaroni, JAW PseudoAnacron, or Anacron that will automate the maintenance activity regardless of whether the computer is turned off or asleep.
    OS X automatically defrags files less than 20 MBs in size, so unless you have a disk full of very large files there's little need for defragmenting the hard drive. As for virus protection there are few if any such animals affecting OS X. You can protect the computer easily using the freeware Open Source virus protection software ClamXAV. Personally I would avoid most commercial anti-virus software because of their potential for causing problems.
    I would also recommend downloading the shareware utility TinkerTool System that you can use for periodic maintenance such as removing old logfiles and archives, clearing caches, etc.
    For emergency repairs install the freeware utility Applejack. If you cannot start up in OS X, you may be able to start in single-user mode from which you can run Applejack to do a whole set of repair and maintenance routines from the commandline.
    When you install any new system software or updates be sure to repair the hard drive and permissions beforehand. I also recommend booting into safe mode before doing system software updates.
    Get an external Firewire drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is significant):
    1. Retrospect Desktop (Commercial - not yet universal binary)
    2. Synchronize! Pro X (Commercial)
    3. Synk (Backup, Standard, or Pro)
    4. Deja Vu (Shareware)
    5. Carbon Copy Cloner (Freeware - not universal binary.)
    6. LaCie SilverKeeper (Freeware - not universal binary)
    7. PsynchX 2.1.1 and RsyncX 2.1 (Freeware)
    The following utilities can also be used for backup, but cannot create bootable clones:
    1. Backup (requires a .Mac account with Apple both to get the software and to use it.)
    2. Toast
    3. Impression
    Apple's Backup is a full backup tool capable of also backing up across multiple media such as CD/DVD. However, it cannot create bootable backups. It is primarily an "archiving" utility as are the other two.
    Impression and Toast are disk image based backups, only. Particularly useful if you need to backup to CD/DVD across multiple media.
    Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQs on maintenance, optimization, virus protection, and backup and restore.
    Additional suggestions will be found in Mac Maintenance Quick Assist.

  • Oracle 8i release 3 (64 bit) on Solaris requirements

    We are currently running Solaris 7 and are planning on upgrading
    to 8i release 3 (8.1.7) 64 bit. I have heard that 8i release 3
    requires Solaris 8, however I have not been able to locate
    specific operating system requirements for Oracle 64 bit (only
    32 bit). Does 8i release 3 64 bit require Solaris 8?

    I believe so. You need to enable 64bit solaris. if your nvram
    is up-to-date and your jumper is set to write position (from 1-2
    to 2-3). You os tells you you can enable 64bit os. You can go
    to /platform/sun4u/boot.conf and uncomment the # at the last
    line so that it looks like:
    ALLOW_64BIT_KERNEL_ON_UltraSPARC_1_CPU=true
    Then do a reboot to start the 64bit os.

  • Looking for the basic Tutorial for Labview 5

    I have a student who I would like to have learn labVIEW. But all of my systems are running labVIEW 5.1 I am looking for the tutorial which starts assuming that you know nothing of this program, and steps you through writing several programs.

    There was a tutorial included with the LabVIEW 5.1 CD. You can also find some links to on-line tutorials here as well as links to some LabVIEW books. I don't know how many of the tutorials or books are specific to LabVIEW 5.1 but the basic LabVIEW functions haven't changed that much and there should be enough to get someone started.
