Basics: using "defaults" command remotely

Hi, i need to use remotely some commands to control some imacs in a lab. I need to modify some .plist files in the clients just to set parameters as dock position, screensaver behaviour, multiple desktop picture and so. Ive been trying to use the defaults command but there is necessary to specify the path of the .plist file ie   student1/Lybrary/Preferences/com.apple.desktop.plist. As every computer has a different user name there is no way to send a single command to write to the .plist file. There are almost 100 computers and im using ARD to send the commands
Can anyone help me in finding the way to write to those .plist files or maybe a bsd command to change parameters? comands as networksetup and systemsetup has been useful but i ignore the proper syntax.
best

It turns out that I was being stupid.  Mavericks behaves the same as earlier OS X versions.  I forgot that the saved password file, /etc/kcpassword, also needs to be present on the computer before automatic login will work.

  • Using 'defaults delete' command with com.apple.dock

I have been using the "defaults" command in my scripts to add an icon to a user's dock after a new application has been installed. But now, I'm having trouble trying to figure out how to remove an icon from the dock using the command line. For adding an icon, I use:
    defaults write com.apple.dock persistent-apps -array-add '<dict><key>tile-data</key><dict><key>file-data</key><dict>
    <key>_CFURLString</key><string>/Applications/NewApp/Program.app
    </string><key>_CFURLStringType</key><integer>0</integer>
    </dict></dict></dict>'
(take out all the carriage returns and spaces. I had to put them in here for the line to show properly on the post)
This works great for adding an icon. But, I cannot seem to write something similar using "defaults delete"
    Any help is appreciated.
    Thanks,

    Hi Steve,
If it froze then the code isn't robust against problems. In this case the problem is the web. The command has four spaces in a row in two of the matches. However, the browser smashes that down into a single space. I never understood that aspect of HTML but I know about it and should have considered it. I will replace the spaces with capital Xs. If you replace the Xs with regular spaces, the command should work:
    defaults write com.apple.dock persistent-apps "$( defaults read com.apple.dock persistent-apps | awk 'BEGIN{ ARRAY = "("; ELEM = "" } /^XXXX{/{ while ( $0 !~ /^XXXX}/ ) { if ( ELEM == "" ){ ELEM = $0 } else { ELEM = ELEM "\n" $0 } if ( $0 ~ "_CFURLString\"" && $0 !~ /zzzz/ ){ FOUND = "true" } getline } ELEM = ELEM "\n" $0; if ( FOUND == "true" ){ ARRAY = ARRAY "\n" ELEM }; FOUND = "false"; ELEM = "" } END{ sub( /,[^\n]*$/, "", ARRAY); print ARRAY; print }' )"
In some sense that is poor coding but in the default syntax of the "defaults" command, the only way to determine depth is by how far something is indented. It would have been far more robust to actually count the number of opening parentheses and keep track of the depth but that would have been more complex to code. If I have time, I'll look into changing that.
I assume that the reason the command hung is that it went into an infinite loop. I've also added a carat, '^', in front of the first group of four spaces that will keep that from happening. When typed correctly the command works without it but now it will fail without going into an infinite loop.

The media resides on the server that I am remoting to in powershell and the server is on the same domain. The credentials I pass are for a Domain Admin, but SQL Server fails to validate the credentials for the passed parameter for the sql service user with
    a Access Denied.
If I run the same command with the same user directly on the server it works fine.
My guess is that the elavated privs for Administrator are not being set when using Invoke-Command? Is there a way to utilize powershell to install SQL Server 2012 with command line option using the invoke-command and passing credentials? Or is this a limitation
to the SQL Server installer. If there is can a example be provided?

Ok, so with the help of some friends, we found a fix that works!
Prior to running the Invoke-Command I now run:
    # enable CredSSP on a client computer; this command allows the client credentials to be delegated to the server01 computer.:
    Enable-WsManCredSSP -Role Client -DelefateComputer server.some.domain.com
Then I add the -Authentication option to my Invoke-Command with option Credssp.
The install the works fine. Hope this helpes all.

  • Using defaults in command line

    Greetings,
I am trying to learn if I can set a screensaver hotcorner using defaults, such as bottom left to "on". Something like:
defaults -currentHost write com.apple.screensaver hotCorners somevalue
I would really be grateful for the answer to this one, but it also presents a bigger question. Is there a way to glean the available defaults commands for a particular application? For instance, I would like to determine the configurable attributes of the screensaver.
    Thanks for sharing your knowledge.
    Regards,
    Tim

..."I am trying to learn if I can set a screensaver hotcorner using defaults, such as bottom left to "on"."...
The "hot corner" functions all appear to be stored in the com.apple.dock.plist file, with an integer value of "5" denoting the assigned action to be screensave activation. So a 'defaults' command to set the "bottom left" corner to activate the screensaver might be something like:<pre>defaults write com.apple.dock wvous-bl-corner -int 5
osascript -e 'tell application "Dock" to quit'</pre>
The second command restarts the "Dock" so that the preference file is read.
..."Is there a way to glean the available defaults commands for a particular application?"...
Of course, anything actually set from the application's preferences, or "System Preferences.app" can just be read from a .plist file so it's just a matter of finding the file and comparing the contents "before" and "after". For those that aren't, there probably is, but I don't know it - there was something posted a long time ago at macosxhints.com for earlier versions of OS X but it was already out of date and didn't work when I tried it, I think in Panther. There is currently another thread on this site discussing using 'strings' to try to find "candidate" words that might be used as property list keys - maybe join in there...

  • Can I enable "Use default gateway on remote network" on VPN connection using Group Policy?

    Hi,
First timer here so please bear with me!
Environment: Domain Windows 2003, Clients: Windows 7 and Windows XP (with Client Side Extensions pushed out)
When creating a VPN connection on a client machine manually with default settings the "Use default gateway on remote network" found in [Connection Properties - Networking - IPv4 - Advanced] is enabled, which is good as we don't allow split-tunneling.
I have a test GPO that creates a new VPN Connection [Computer Config - Preferences - Control Panel - Network Options], but the above setting is unticked.
Am I missing something on the options for the GP preference to set this automtically?
I can write a script to directly change the C:\Users\All Users\Microsoft\Network\Connections\Pbk\rasphone.pbk file but would prefer if I could sort it all out using Group Policy.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks a lot!
    David

    Shane,
There is actually a way to set the "Use default gateway on remote network" through Group Policy Preferences. And this may even be a better way to do it, because you may change this flag without touching any other settings, or other VPN connections.
(All VPN connections are stored in the same .pbk file.)
Here's the trick: Opening the .pbk file in notepad, I realized that this is actually an oldstyle ini-structured file. And Group Policy Preferences can update ini files! In the .pbk file the section names are the VPN connections names, like [My VPN],
and the property IpPrioritizeRemote is the flag "Use default gateway on remote network".
So, in Group Policy Management Editor, go to Preferences / Windows Settings / Ini Files.
Create a new object with Action = Update, and File Path =
    C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Network\Connections\pbk\rasphone.pbk
(If this is where your file is located, I guess it is in c:\users if the VPN connection is made for a single user.)
Section Name should be the display name of your VPN connection, without the brackets.
    Property Name = IpPrioritizeRemote
    Property Value = 1

    Peter :-)
This is great, but just one question. I also want to append a list of DNS Sufixes in order (when viewing a VPN properties, this is buried in
"Networking --> IPv4/6 --> Advanced --> DNS --> Append these DNS Suffixes (in order)". However, for the VPNs I have manually created with this list populated, I can't see any entries in the rasphone.pbk. Does anyone know
    where these are stored?
    Cheers.

  • Pairing an ATV remote using a universal remote

I tried to ask this last week but maybe it was too confusing.
Can I pair an Apple TV remove using a universal remote. I've got two ATVs and would like to pair each remote then use a universal remote to control them individually.
    Think it will work?
    Thanks.

Hello - each Apple Remote issues unique commands by default. I won't go into the gory details, but if you looks at the Hex output of commands from two different remotes there are two digits that change as you issue the same command from different remotes.
By default the devices that use an Apple Remote accept codes from any remote (my guess is they ignore the unique hex codes). When you pair the remote you are telling the device to only listen to that specific remote by watching for the unique hex codes. Here is the thread from which I gleaned this info (I am not bright enough to figure this out on my own):
    http://www.remotecentral.com/cgi-bin/mboard/rc-prontong/thread.cgi?8154,1#1
I am researching using a Universal Remote, Inc. brand MX-900 remote to control my Apple TV. I can use the learned codes to control it no problem for the basic features. The only thing I can't get working is the "fast scroll" through the library lists - it must be the rate at which the Apple Remote issues repeat commands vs how quickly my remote does.

  • [Forum FAQ] "Unable to connect to the server by using Windows PowerShell Remoting" error while installing RDS roles on Server 2012 R2

When you try to install RDS role on server 2012 R2 using standard deployment, this issue may occur (Figure 1).
“Unable to connect to the server by using Windows PowerShell remoting”.
Figure 1: Unable to connect to the server by using Windows PowerShell remoting
First of all, we need to verify the configurations as it suggested:
    1. The server must be available by using Windows PowerShell remotely.
    2. The server must be joined to a domain.
    3. The server must be running at least Windows Server 2012 R2.
    4. The currently logged on user must be a member of the local Administrators group on the server.
    5. Remote Desktop Services connections must be enabled by using Group Policy.
In addition, we need to check if the “Windows Remote Management “service is running and related firewall exceptions have been created for WinRM listener.
To enabling PowerShell remoting, we can run this PowerShell command as administrator (Figure 2).
    Enable-PSRemoting -Force
    Figure 2: Enable PowerShell Remoting
However, if issue persists, we need to check whether it has enough memory to work.
By default, remote shell allots only 150 MB of memory. If we have IIS or SharePoint App pool, 150 MB of memory is not sufficient to perform the remoting task. Therefore, we need to increase
the memory via the PowerShell command below:
    Set-Item WSMan:\localhost\Shell\MaxMemoryPerShellMB 1000
Then, you need to restart the server and the issue should be resolved.
You can get more information regarding Remote Troubleshooting by below link:

    RDS forum.

i found another possible reason, this solution worked for me:
    http://oyvindnilsen.com/solution-for-powershell-remoting-error-it-cannot-determine-the-content-type-of-the-http-response-from-the-destination-computer/
I tried to set up powershell remoting on a server and kept getting this error:
Enter-PSSession : Connecting to remote server failed with the following error message : The WinRM client cann
ot process the request. It cannot determine the content type of the HTTP response from the destination comput
er. The content type is absent or invalid. For more information, see the about_Remote_Troubleshooting Help to
    pic.
After a bit of troubleshooting I discovered that the problem was that the authentication packets was to big (over 16k), this will cause WinRM to reject the request. The reason for authentication packets getting too big can be because the user is member of very
many security groups or in my case because of the SidHistory attribute.
The solution was to increase the MaxFieldLength and MaxRequestBytes keys in the registry under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\HTTP\Parameters
If the keys does not exists you can create them, be sure to use the DWORD type.
I sat MaxFieldLength to DEC value 40000 and MaxRequestBytes to DEC value 32768 and rebooted the server. Problem solved.

  • Changing default command mode to Privileged EXEC

I am currently setting up a 2800 Series router, and prefer a username/password type authentication rather than a single enable password. To do this, I did:
    Router(config)# username <myuser> privilege 15 secret 0 <mypassword>
    Router(config)# username2 <myuser> privilege 15 secret 0 <mypassword>
    Router(config)# aaa new-model
Router(config)# aaa authentication login default local
This basically does what I want - when I connect to the router through console, it immediately asks me for a username and password. The thing is - as soon as I provide the right credentials, it takes me to USER EXEC mode (the default command mode). Is it possible to change that so that after entering the credentials, I go right into privileged exec mode?
Bonus question: As it is now, I just have no enable password, so when I login with my credentials, I issue "enable" to enter privileged exec mode without it prompting for an additional password. Is it safe to do it this way - having no enable password but requiring a username and password for login?

    Hi,
We do this all the time. It works the same way on telnet
    Line vty 0 4
    Priveledge level 15
This way when we telnet in, it takes us right to priv. exec mode. Most people have the enable password the same as the telnet / console password anyway so IMHO its the same thing. If you are trying to be ultra secure, than make your enable password something different and do not use this little trick....But like I said...I use it all the time.

  • Can I use my Nike+ remote watch without executing a workout?

I've been using Nike+ for a while with my my iPod Nano (4th Gen). I also have my Nano mounted in my car and I've been using the Nike+ remote watch to control the iPod basic functions (play, pause, skip, previous, etc.) for a while. Works great and I don't need to start a workout to do this.
Now I want to mount my new iPhone 3GS in my car. Using Voice Command will be great to start an artist, playlist, etc., but I don't think it'll be so great to just skip or back up a song. I do this a lot in the car and the iPhone just doesn't have a great interface for this compared to the click wheel on the Nano.
So, I thought I could just use my Nike+ remote watch, link it to the iPhone, and use it the same way I do with the Nano. Doesn't appear I can do so. Am I wrong or is there a way to use the remote with the iPhone 3GS to control iPod functions without executing a workout?
    Thanks!

You could always try the Kensington LiquidAux Deluxe Car Mount & remote control.
I use in in my vehicle and even with the voice commands, I find the steering-wheel mounted remote control really handy for skipping forward and backward through playlists.

  • Set askforpassworddelay in terminal using defaults

This defaults command is all over the web but is not working for me:
defaults -currentHost write com.apple.screensaver askForPasswordDelay -int 1800
This is probably because the XML tag for the askForPasswordDelay time us <real>.
    <dict>
    <key>askForPasswordDelay</key>
    <real>60</real>
    </dict>
I basically want to set the System Preferences/Security Password delay to immediately which would be:
    <real>0.0</real>
Just not sure how to do it using the defaults command.
    Thank you all!

AFAICT, the default setting for that item when initially setting the Security prefPane to require a password is 0.0, all I can suggest is to delete the plist and reset it. BTW, that plist is unique to each user. Here's mine:
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
    <!DOCTYPE plist PUBLIC "-//Apple//DTD PLIST 1.0//EN" "http://www.apple.com/DTDs/PropertyList-1.0.dtd">

    <key>askForPassword</key>
    <integer>1</integer>
    <key>askForPasswordDelay</key>
    <real>0.0</real>
    </dict>
    </plist>

  • Is it possible to run a java program without using the command prompt?

    Hi,
I was wondering whether it is possible to run a Java program (not an applet) without using a command line in the command prompt?
Basically I want to run a program that will be continually running in the background and hence I don't want to have a command prompt screen loaded up as well - I just want the program to be running in the task bar.
I know how to run the program in the task bar - but I still need to launch the program from the command prompt - is there anyway I can get a program running without having to start it from the command prompt?
    Cheers

Or create a desktop shortcut (in Windows) or an application launcher ( in Linux GUI).

  • Issue while starting AdminSerever using wlst commands

Hi, I am facing issue while trying to start the AdminServer and Managed Server via nodemanager using wlst commands. I have installelled WebLogic 11g on windows 2008 R2. Mentioned below are the steps that I followed:
    1) In Nodemanager.properties files I set following parameters to true. I did this, so that nodemanager can start the server in case of crash.
    CrashRecoveryEnabled=true
    StartScriptEnabled=true
    2) started nodemanager and then started AdminServer from the command prompt as follows:
    nmConnect('weblogic','password','10.23.226.58','5556','IMDomain','E:\Oracle\Middleware\user_projects\domains\IMDomain','ssl')
    nmStart('AdminServer')
I dont see any errors but it seems the AdminServer do Not start properly as in the cmd window I don't see any 'started successfully' message - the message remains as *"Starting AdminServer..."*
However in the adminServer logs I see that the status is Running (refer logs at the end) and I can also see it as Running in weblogic console.
I really didnt care if its not giving a success message in cmd window but the problem occurs when I start the managedServer. After starting the managed server in about 10 minutes, there is a stuck thread. (I guess it is 10 mins because Stuck Thread MaxTime value is 600).
If I set StartScriptEnabled=false, and start by directly running the startweblogic.cmd then it works fine.
I am struggling with this for last 1 week, appreciate any help.
