Batch shrinking of pdf filesize for a lot of files

I have several million pdf files, each about 1MB in size, and need to compress them to save disk space and shorten the download time when viewed through the web.
I've tried many different third party products to compress/shrink/resize them in a batch job without changing the looks (just lowering the visible quality), but most products only reduce the filesize about 15-25% and the few that actually could compress 70-90% took a "long" time for each file (even just a few seconds for each file makes a process time of approximately a year in total running on a normal PC).
Removing all the embedded fonts changes the size from 1MB to about 60kB, but I need the compressed files to look similar to the original files (a certain degree of visual quality degradation is accetable though).
When studying the Adobe SDK it seems like there are methods that could be of use to me, but that they are only accessible through adobe plugin functionality and not externally available using the API.
After searching both these forums and on google I've realized the issue with compression and font embedding isn't a trivial problem, and therefore need some help understanding all this. Any help, code snippets or ideas is greatly appreciated.

There is a script called PDF Processor you can try.
The last one listed is the one you want (most up to date)
http://ps-scripts.com/bb/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=1882&sid=4756172e6aed44b1195bbee6ce4b9367
Put the script in your photoshop>presets>scripts folder and the script should then
be under File>Scripts>Pdf Processor.

  • Incorrect PDF scaling for web site jpeg files

So, I'm not sure if anyone else find this frustrating. When working on a new web design either in Illustrator or Photoshop, etc. and then exporting those to a jpg file, then taking those and combining them into a PDF file using acrobat, I'm seeing the PDF files being about 25% larger than their actual 72dpi web-standard size. So when I pass along the PDF to clients for review, I always have to add a disclaimer that they should set their PDF reader to about 75% to see the actual size of the web site files. 100% is far too big. Any idea why the correctly-sized image files, when imported into Acrobat are increased in size?
I've tried saving them as smaller files... I've tried the cropping feature... none of this seems to solve the problem. It's quite frustrating.
    Best,
    Russel

    Hi,
In Muse, there is no button/widget which allows to upload contents to your site. I would suggest to use third party web form builder, like Jotform, Upload Field Allowed File Types and Embed the form code in Muse and that should work.

I am not aware of a way except for photos that allows you to select multiple files in an email. I even checked settings in the Adobe Reader app, and it does not show that ability.

  • Batch create multiple pdf's while using epilogue.ps for setting initial view and opening bookmarks

    Hi,
I'm trying to batch create multiple pdf's from word files, and use the epilogue.ps file for setting the initial view and opening the bookmarks panel, but i keep getting no satisfying result.. i'm probably missing something fundamental.
I've read some forum posts and adobe help posts explaining this, so i'm pretty sure this would be possible?
    Reference:
http://help.adobe.com/en_US/acrobat/X/pro/using/WS58a04a822e3e50102bd615109794195ff-7f0f.w .html  see advanced panel options

    System: Windows 7
    Acrobat: Acrobat X professional
i've searched for and found a way to overwite the epilogue.ps file and have inserted the following:
%  Insert your custom PostScript here...
    [ /PageMode /UseThumbs
    /Page 1 /View [/Fit ]
    /DOCVIEW pdfmark
After that i checked my Adobe Acrobat preferences, and in the categorie 'Convert to Pdf' i selected 'Microsoft office word' in the select area 'Converting to pdf'.
Clicked 'Edit settings' to allow creating a joboptions file (field: 'adobe pdf settings') which has the option 'Use epiloque.ps and prologue.ps' checked in the advanced section.
So now i thought i would have everyting setup to create my pdf's, however, my view isn't changed to fit, nor are there any bookmarks or in this case thumbs (i used /useThumbs) visible.
Did i miss something obvious? Is there a better way to test this? Any help would be appreciated!

i like it about that ok in how to open my site

  • How to set tagged pdf settings for batch process

Framemaker doesn't allow me to set tagged pdf settings without opening a file (i.e. *.mif/*.fm/*.book).We are using .MIF files to generate PDF in an automated process.( .MIF files will be sent to FrameMaker as a batch file using DZBATCHER then it it uses distiller to produce the PDF).
How can I set tagged PDF settings for this kind of operation?

Tagged PDF info is a document level property, i.e. you need to define it in the MIF. Check your MIF manual for: <DPDFStructure and <DPDFStructureDefined statements.
Note: If you're using any FM version earlier that FM9 and not the FrameServer version, please read your EULA very carefully (Section 2.2 - 2.4) concerning automated creation of PDF files. With FM9, the restriction apparently has been loosened to only how the process is intiated (Section 2.3).
Copies of the EULAs can be seen here: http://www.adobe.com/products/eulas/

  • How to batch print multiple PDFs in Mac OS X?

Does anyone know of any new software that allows one to batch print multiple PDF files with a print dialogue for the first file, followed by dialogue-less printing for the rest?
I work for an architect's firm and we often find ourselves printing dozens of A1 PDFs, going through the print dialogue window for each file.
We used to be able to batch print when Preview.app could open multiple PDFs in one window; it lost this capability in a regression when it gained bookmarks and we've been living in batch print stone age ever since.
(A desktop printer doesn't work by the way)

    Lamont E wrote:

Wow! I've been asking this question repeatedly for a couple of years now and you're the first person to mention this. Thanks a lot. There will be some happy campers in our office, I tell ya.
I missed it because all the large PDFs we create include a table of contents and you have to switch to thumbnail view before you can drag and drop additional PDFs.
With the type of files we produce It takes 30 seconds or so to add 8 files together, so it's not ideal but it's a lot faster and more convenient than Acrobat Pro or printing each file separately.
Another option is to open the printer window and drag all the files into it. They will print automatically with no dialog box.
This doesn't work because you can't choose the size of paper you want to print to.
Thanks again, your first post too.

I am in the process of expanding a database of chemistry journal articles.  These materials are ideally acquired in two formats when both are available-- PDF and HTML.  To oversimplify, PDFs are for the user to read, and derivatives of the HTML versions are for the computer to read.  Both formats are, of course, readily recognized and indexed by Spotlight.  Journal articles have two essential components with regards to a database:  the topical content of the article itself, and the cited references to other scientific literature.  While a PDF merely lists these references, the HTML version has, in addition, links to the cited items.  Each link URL contains the digital object identifier (doi) for the item it points to. A doi is a unique string that points to one and only one object, and can be quite useful if rendered in a manner that enables indexing by Spotlight.  Embedded URL's are, of course, ignored by Spotlight.  As a result, HTML-formatted articles must be processed so that URL's are openly displayed as readable text before Spotlight will recognize them.  Conversion to DOC format using MS Word, followed by conversion to RTF using Text Edit accomplishes this, but is quite labor intensive.
In the last few months, I have added about 3,500 articles to this collection, which means that any procedure for rendering URL's must be automated and able to process large batches of documents with minimal user oversight.  This procedure needs to generate a separate file for each HTML document processed. Trials using Automator's "Get Specified Finder Items" and "Get Selected Finder Items", as well as "Ask For Finder Items"  (along with "Get URLs From Web Pages") give unsatisfactory results.  When provided with multiple input documents, these three commands generate output in which the URLs from multiple input items are merged into a single block, which yields a single file using "Create New Word Document" as the subsequent step.  A one-to-one, input file to output file result can be obtained by processing one file at a time, but this requires manual selection of each item and one-at-a-time processing. What I need is a command that accepts multiple input documents, but processes them one at a time, generating a separate output for each file processed.  Is there a way for Automator to do this?

    Hi,
With the project all done, i'm preparing for the presentation. Managed to get my hands on a HD beamer for the night (Epason TW2000) and planning to do the presentation in HD.
That of course managed to bring up some problems. I posted a thread which i'll repost here . Sorry for the repost, i normally do not intend to do this, but since this thread is actually about the same thing, i'd like to ask the same question to you. The end version is in AfterEffects, but that actually doesn't alter the question. It's about export:
"I want to export my AE project of approx 30 min containing several HD files to a Blu Ray disc. The end goal is to project the video in HD quality using the Epson  EMP-TW2000 projector. This projector is HD compatible.
To project the video I need to connect the beamer to a computer capable of playing a heavy HD file (1), OR burn the project to a BRD (2) and play it using a BRplayer.
I prefer option 2, so my question is: which would be the preferred export preset?
    Project specs:
                        - 1920x1080 sq pix  (16:9)
                        - 25 fps
                        - my imported video files (Prem.Pro sequences) are also 25 fps and are Progressive (!)
To export to a BRD compatible format, do i not encounter a big problem: my projectfiles are 25 fps and progressive, and I believe that the only Bluray preset dispaying 1920x1080 with 25 fps requests an INTERLACED video  (I viewed the presets found on this forum, this thread)... There is also a Progr. format, BUT then you need 30 fps (29,...).
So, is there one dimension that can be changed without changing the content of the video, and if yes which one (either the interlacing or the fps).
I'm not very familiar with the whole Blu-ray thing, I hope that someone can help me out."
    Please give it a look.
    Thanks,
    Jef

  • Is there a way to reduce the size of a final PDF created for print when saving a file?

Is there a way to reduce the size of a final PDF created for print when saving in any software (especially illustrator)? I don't want any quality to decrease at the same time. Thanks!

Personally I would avoid optimizing the PDF's via Adobe Acrobat Pro unless you understand what you are removing from the PDF; having said that, it is the most effective way to reduce the file-size in the right hands.
If I am sending out layouts for commercial print I change my default Print / Export setting from Standard to PDF/A-1b:2005 (CMYK). This will resolve a lot of common print problems for print-ready documents and it should embed your fonts and flatten transparencies etc.
If your document is still too large you run an Audit Space Usage using Adobe Acrobat Pro. In the left pane enable 'Content' and then hit the button in the top left corner of the Content Pane and choose Audit Space Usage.

  • OutPut as a PDF doc for Output Determination process of a PO

    Hi
Can I get the OutPut as a PDF document for OutPut Determination process of a PO for a Vendor.
My schema should produce a PDF file and get transmitted to that Vendor as soon i save my PO.
Also can i get any SAP document on this.
Pls help me. Swifty reply me.
    cheers
    MaruthiRam

    Hi,
PO can be sent to using Outlook email or the Internal send within SAP.
    Message via E-Mail
    Use
You can send purchasing documents to a vendor by e-mail.
You can also send memos to an internal user from within the purchasing document, in which case the recipient can directly access the relevant document when processing the e-mail (executable mail).
    Prerequisites
    External Transmission
    Make the necessary Customizing settings
The SAP system is configured for the transmission of external mails.
The message determination facility has been set up in Customizing for Purchasing.
You have defined a communication strategy in Customizing under Messages Output Control -> Message Types -> Define Message Types for <Purchasing Document> -> Maintain Message Types for <Purchasing Document> on the Default Values tab page, so that if no e-mail address can be found, for example, the system sends a fax.
    The following information is necessary:
    1.Data
    2.Value
    3.Comment
    Message type:
    Communication strategy
    E.g. NEU
Choose a communication strategy or create a new one. Via the input help, you can branch to the maintenance function for communication strategies. Choose in the following window.
Enter the necessary data on the Default Values tab page on the detail screen for the message type ().
    Processing routines
    Medium
    Program
    FORM routine
    5 (external transmission)
    SAPF06P (e.g. for PO)
    ENTRY_NEU
The entries are identical to those of the print output.
    Partner roles
    E.g. external transmission/LF
    Maintain master data
Message records must have been created through master data maintenance (Purchasing menu). (See Creating Message Records)
Enter the necessary data u2013 for example, role LF (vendor), medium 5 (external transmission) and time spot 4 (send immediately upon saving).
SAP recommends that you work with time spot 4, so that the e-mails generated are sent immediately.
If you work with processing time spot 1 (send via periodically scheduled job), you must schedule the program RSNAST00 periodically for message output, so that messages are generated and e-mails sent.
An e-mail address is stored in the vendor master record.
An e-mail address is stored in the user master record.
Please note that you must also maintain an e-mail address for user IDs with which batch-jobs are carried out.
    Internal Transmission
    Make the necessary Customizing settings:
You have maintained the Customizing settings for Purchasing under Messages, Output Control -> Message Types ->Define Message Types for <Purchasing Document> -> Maintain Message Types for <Purchasing Document>.
    The following information is necessary:
    1.Data
    2.Value
    3.Comment
    Message type:
    Time-spot
    Transmission medium (output medium)
    Partner role
    E.g. MAIL
E.g. 4 (send immediately upon saving)
    7 (SAPoffice)
    MP (mail partner)
Enter the necessary data on the Default Values tab page on the detail screen for the message type ().
    Mail title and texts
    E.g. mail from purchase order
    Processing routines
    Medium
    Program
    FORM routine
    7 (SAPoffice)
    RSNASTSO
    SAPOFFICE_AUFRUF
    Partner roles
    E.g. SAPoffice/MP
    SAPoffice/LF
    Maintain master data
Message records must have been created for the message type MAIL through master data maintenance (Purchasing menu). (See Creating Message Records)
For more information on the internal and external transmission of e-mails, refer to the Basis documentation under Business Workplace (BC-SRV-GBT).
Further information on external transmission is available in the Basis documentation under SAPconnect and in the section External Sending in the SAP System.
    Activities
    External Transmission
If you have specified the processing time-spot 4 (send immediately upon saving), the system will immediately generate and transmit a message when you save the purchasing document.
If you have specified the processing time-spot 1 (send via periodically scheduled job), you must initiate the output of e-mails manually.
    Result
You see the documents generated in the SAP system under Office ->Work center -> Outbox -> Documents.
    Internal Transmission
On the message screen of the Purchasing application (e.g. in the purchase order), enter the message type, the medium (SAPoffice) and the role (MP = mail partner).
Choose Means of communication and enter your text on the following screen (<Purchasing document>: Send with note). Enter the useru2019s first and last names, for example, in the Recipient field.
    Executable mail
If you wish to insert a transaction (because you want the recipient to view a purchase order, for example), choose Goto -> Execution parameters. Enter the necessary data, such as execution type (T = transaction), execution element (ME22N = Change Purchase Order), execution system, and the SET/GET parameters (BES for purchase order).
    Result
If you have specified send immediately as the processing time-spot, the user will immediately receive a message or document when the purchase order is saved.
The user can view the message sent to him or her via Office -> Work center -> Inbox.
If the document in your inbox is an executable mail, you can click the right-hand mouse button and directly access the relevant purchase order, for example, via the menu thus displayed.
    Hope it works...
    Regards,
    Kiran

  • Batch Conversion of PDF to Postscript

I've been trying write a script for Batch conversion of PDF to PS files, using "silent" printing. I'm apparently missing something, because acrobat keeps crashing after executing the script (and the .ps files are not being created). Its also still prompting me for a filename. Not really sure of the syntax for keeping the same filename? I'm new to java script, so I'm sure its something I have wrong. My code is below, if anyone can help me out. I'm using Acrobat 7.0.9
    this.print ({bUI: false,bSilent: true,bShrinktoFit: true,});
    var pp = this.getPrintParams();
    pp.interactive = pp.constants.interactionLevel.automatic;
    pp.printername = "Xerox Docuprint 92C NPS PS2 C1";
    pp.filename = "c:\temp\$filename$.ps";
    this.print(pp);
    Thanks

Why are you calling the print method twice?
Your syntax in the first call to print is in error. You have a comma after bShrinkToFit: true which is telling the JS interpreter to expect another argument.
Use this for filename (not the capital N in filename ... use proper case for property names):
    pp.fileName = "/c/temp/" + this.documentFileName + ".ps";
Also, when printing to PostScript you shouldn't specify a printer name. Use this (again, note the proper case for properties):
    pp.printerName = "";
It says exactly this in the documentation for the fileName property of the PrintParams object. I suggest you read the documentation relating to the methods you're trying to use ... always a good place to find answers.
    > When printerName is an empty string and fileName is specified, the current document is saved as a PostScript file.
Although it may not consider C:\temp a "safe path" (I can't remember off the top of my head). You'll want to read the documentation regarding JavaScript "safe paths". If it is still prompting you for a filename it is most likely ignoring your path due to security restrictions.

  • PDF converter for Mac Snow Leopard

What would be the best PDF-converter for my Mac OSX 10.6.4 Snow Leopard?
    Thanks for advice.
    Vallis

Well, I think actually you can try this *PDF converter*.
It could convert PDF to Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Epub and 2 other format.
Extremely easy to use and really friend interface.
Only 1 thing I want to complain is it just support 50 files in a batch.
    Wish it could help though.

  • Generated PDF Filesize Concerns

    Hello,
I have am creating PDFs by generated XDP files from ColdFusion. Each PDF could have different sections that would appear or not based on the XML data passed in with the XDP file. I am concerned that having all of the sections in one file may bloat the generated PDF filesize? Is this true or is the PDF filesize only dependent upon the information that is actually displayed when it is generated (rather than both the displayed and hidden design elements)?
Are there any resources that folks have found useful for PDF file size optimization techniques?
    Thanks.

The Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts

    Hi Sergiusz,
Thank you for your reply. I look at what you wrote and try to make some test...
    1) For first I download FontForge, which can generate type1 font from true type. So I open FontForge and open my Arial.ttf font and use "Generate Fonts" to save my Arial.ttf font to pfb and pfm (whoch are need to set in uifont.ali). I have to change encoding, because my font has 2byte encoding so I reecondode the font from ISO10646-1 to ISO8859-2 and generate to pfb.
    2) Then I navigate REPORTS_PATH from regedit to my *.pfm and *.pfb files.
    3) I add these lines to end of my uifont.ali
    [ PDF:Embed ]
    Arial = "Arial.pfm Arial.pfb"
    ArialNarrow = "ArialNarrow.pfm ArialNarrow.pfb"
    4) Then I generate my report but nothing change... I check "Font used" in my pdf file, but there were not my fonts embedded I guess..
I also try PDF:Subset, but it doesnt change anything... I try PDF aliasing to see if my uifont is working - this work very well, but I dont need to change font...
Any other advice? Thank you so much to everyone!

  • Is it possible to automatically generate a bookmark when batch scanning to pdf?, Is it possible to automatically generate a bookmark when batch scanning to pdf?

    Hi,
I'm scanning hardcopy documents in to electronic PDF format at work for archiving.
I'm allowed to scan several hardcopy documents into one electronic PDF file, to save time (these files are no longer required but for legal reason we should keep backed up, so I don't have to be perfect).
I thought perhaps there was a way to automatically generate a bookmark at certain points in the PDF?
    For example;
    - I have three documents to be scanned into one PDF file.
    - I use the 'document feeder' on my scanner to scan mutiple pages at a time (batch scanning)
    - Each scanned 'batch' is then appended to a PDF file, creating a single PDF document from multiple scanned batches.
Is there a way to automatically generate a bookmark at the beginning of a batch scan?
So that I could have three bookmarks in the PDF file for easy navigation to the beginning of each document?
Keep in mind, sometimes I might need to do six batch scans to create the single PDF file (as the three documents need to be split in half because they are quite large). So I'd only need to select 'create a bookmark' on every second batch scan.
However, creating a bookmark at every batch scan is better than nothing at all so if that's the only way to do it, then its still very helpful.
    Note:
I don't require the bookmarks to be labeled (default labeling is fine).
I don't want to manually create bookmarks in preview, acrobat. I want the bookmark to be generated automatically before/after I press 'scan'.
I may be using the incorrect term ('bookmark'), perhaps its document 'sections' but hopefully my situation is still understandable.
Any ideas/ help would be greatly appreciated.
    Kind Regards
    Sachi

You could try to use a motion sensor - in a do-it-yourself store you can buy motion sensors that turn on the lights when a burglar approaches the property. Connect this sensor to the remote control of your camera instead of to a light.
Probably you can buy ready-made motion sensitive remote controls, the photographers here will know. You would need this kind of remote control for wildlife photography.

  • PDF Settings For Industrial Touchscreen

    Hi,
I am creating an instruction manual and parts manual to be used on an industrial touch screen. OS is  Windows XP
We are using bookmarks on the left hand side and want the user to be able to use the bookmarks and have a page displayed.
Screen sizes on the industrial machine vary from machine to machine.
    Questions:
    best display settings to use
    image settings
    pdf file size
Anything else that will make the user's experience pleasant.
    Thanks much,
    Doreen

    Hi Doreen,
    In my humble opinion :
    Best display settings to use:
These are generally controlled by the workstation, but for Acrobat it is best to use large, bold type for any text, images that are sized to the most common size monitor you will be using (if you make images very large, they will appear pixilated and distorted when Acrobat has to scale it down to fit on a small screen), and feel free to use more pages than if you had to print them
    Image settings:
You sort of have to take a "lowest common denominator" approach here. You don't really need more than 72dpi of resolution for an image—at the correct size for the document. I also recommend RGB as the color mode.
    PDF file size:
Smaller is usually better, and the PDF optimizer (File: Save as other: Reduced Size PDF) will help to shrink your PDF's file size. Although, you needn't worry too much, as the files will be sitting on the system. If they were served via a web server to a browser, then the size is much more an issue.
Likely others may weigh in on this forum post as well?
Let us know how it goes!
    Regards, Stacy
