Battery died while installing Mavericks. Installation corrupted. Wont boot or resume install.

Greetings,
A friend just called in a panic. He updated to Mavericks without plugging his MBP in. The battery died while updating and the computer won't boot into OS. It boots back into the installer but won't continue. Disk utility cant repair it. Any idea of how to help him? (he has no backup)
I may have him ship it to me, if it mounts on desktop I'll clone it, reinstal Mavericks, migrate his data.
What generally gets corrupted when a Mavericks installation is abruptly cut short?
Is there anything else to have him try before he ships it?

If his Mac is capable of it, I'd try Internet Recovery.

  • Battery died while updating to OS X 10.5.2, Now won't boot!

    Dear all,
Last night I went to update my PowerBook from 10.5.1 to 10.5.2, along with a couple of other updates that Software Update had downloaded. Half way through the installation my battery died, and now with the mains plugged in, the computer won't boot at all. I get the initial white screen with they grey apple logo in the middle and a spinning loading icon.
Is there anything I can do to revert it and get it to boot up?
I have a time machine backup from about a week ago, but have some work I did yesterday I would really rather not lose if at all possible!
    Many thanks in advance,
    Jude

Lesson learned: never update on battery.
If you can boot your computer with your OS disc, and if you have enough free hard drive space, you can perform an Archive and Install. This way you lose nothing but the 90-180 minutes it will take for the OS to install.
If it won't boot off the CD or you lack the drive space for an archive and install find another Mac user and mount your computer's drive on their computer using FW target disk mode.

  • I updated my mac and after the installation it wont boot up, i updated my mac and after the installation it wont boot up

i updated my mac and after the installation it wont bootup

  • My battery died while I was powering down my computer. Now I can't login. Please help?!

    Hi,
I was in the process of powering down my computer when the battery ran out of power. Now after I have typed my password  to login and pressed Return nothing happens. I can move the mouse but everything else freezes up and I can't click on anything. The only thing I can do is to manually power it down with the power-button. I am using Time Machine and therefore I re-installed a copy that was one week old but the same problem still exists.
    What do I do now?
I have the first version of Macbook with the aluminum body.
    Thanks for the help!

I am not sure how you re-installed from Time Machine, if you can't click on anything?  Anyway, with the power chord connected (since the battery is flat), try an SMC reset as described in the link.

If this doesn't improve the situation, I would suggest holding the Option key during a restart and selecting the Recovery partition, from where you can verify the disk and repair permissions and ultimately to do a re-instal of Lion if necessary.

  • Battery died while importing iPhoto video thumbnails, project won't play

I had recently added some new videos from my digital camera to iPhoto. Opening iMovie, it prompts to create thumbnails. I said yes and it said it would take about 15 minutes. My battery was low, but it looked like it would finish fine. I came back a few minutes later and the computer was off.
When I powered up again to charge, the iMovie thumbnail processing window was still up but hadn't finished. It appeared to have finished. The problem is that now a project I had completed a month ago won't play back properly. The thumbnails have a little yellow exclamation mark and flicker on/off gray. Trying to play the video usually crashes iMovie now, and it only plays back in short spurts.
My project appears to be corrupt or something. Is there a way to recover? Can I delete bad thumbnails from somewhere through Finder?

  • Plug icon on battery symbol while charging...also wont charge

instead of the lightning bolt while plugged in there is the shape of a plug and the percentage of battery power will not increase it just stays the same even though it is plugged in

If the percentage is between 95 and 100 that is normal. Frequent small top up charges are bad for the battery so it will not charge until it drops below 95%.

  • Battery Died, now no lights/power or wont charge

Hi!  I have a Thinkpad T43 with the ATI graphics card.  It has worked greatup until a few days ago.  I was running off of the battery.  The battery needed to be charged, so I plugged in the laptop and noticed the battery light did not indicate charging, nor the power light come on.
I then shut down and tried to boot directly from the A/C adapter.  No power lights were on, nor would not boot.  I tried booting from the battery and I was able to boot, but the battery promptly died.  I still could not get any power from the AC.
I thought the adapter was bad, so I bought a new adapter.  I tried plugging in the new adapter, the battery charge light came on for a brief second, then went out and still no power lights or boot.
I tried the tip with pushing the power button for 10 seconds, 10 consec. times but to no avail.
    Does anyone have any suggestions?
    Thanks

    Hi Blair230,
Sounds like the AC adapter connector on the laptop where the adapter's plug is inserted has gone bad. Motherboard would need to be replaced or fixed if it turns out to be the case.
    Hope it helps.

I was working on some class notes and my battery gave out. This has happened before, usually when I get back, everything is still there.
    But not this time.
Is there any possible way that i can recover my work?

  • IPad battery died while in the middle of composing important email. Help recovering!

    NEEDING HELP!
I have been up since 6AM carefully composing a VERY important email on my iPad. I was literally DONE and about to press send...when my iPad DIED on me. I had it plugged in and charging...or I thought I did. The outlet wasn't working. Bless it.
Has anyone else had this happen to them?
Or can anyone help me recover the email (which I did not save, as I was done and about to send.)
ANY advice on how to recover it would be appreciated.
(BTW, I was using an iPad 4.)

Unless your email account is an IMAP account and the draft was saved on the server, the email is gone now and cannot be retrieved. Emails are not contained in the backup, so even if you did backup the iPad before it died, you still would not be able to recover the email.

  • Operating system corrupted, wont boot. Any way to get admin rights in cmd prompt?

My operating system has gotten totally corrupted and no longer boots. I get a recovery screen that tells me my registry is corrupted. File: \Windows\system32\config\system, Error code 0xc000014c. I have no recovery media (my computer, a refurb, did not com with any) I want to wipe the hard drive totally clean and do a fresh clean install. I can get to the command prompt through the system recovery by hitting esc at boot up but it wont allow me to reformat the hard drive because of write protections. I tried turning off the write protections at the cmd prompt level but it fails because I cant access it with admin rights. The only way I have found to turn on admin rights for the cmd prompt in online searches is to do it from inside the win8 operating system. Obviously I cannot do that as the OS is too corrupted to be run. Is there any command I can use at the dos prompt that will turn on admin rights? Or better yet just some way to force a total reformat?
    Thanks!

Are you following this? No need for command prompt. Just choose Recovery Manager.

  • Solaris 8 installs but wont boot

I am trying to install Solaris 8 on a Compaq Proliant DL360 i am using software cd 1 to do the install, downloaded the raid array drivers for Solaris and the install seems to go fine with no errors. The problem is when it reboots it goes the the screen where you choose which partition to boot from. the choices are:
    1 diagnostics(compaq utilities)
    2 x86boot active
    3 Solaris
when you choose "2" it just boots to the setup screen like i was booting from the CD. If you choose "3" it switches to a screen that says 'booting selected partition' and it says at the bottom of the screen, "BAD PBR SIG" What am i doing wrong?

Hmm, you're using the raid array driver diskettes from compaq.
At the end of the installation (copying stuff from the
software 1 of 2 cdrom), did it copy the compaq
array drivers from the diskette to the fresh solaris
    installation; before it rebooted?
Otherwise, your system seems to crash with a kernel
panic. The strange thing is that the install kernel booted
from the software 1 of 2 cd together with the raid drivers
from the compaq itu diskette had no problems installing
the OS to the scsi raid array.
Can you post more details about the crash / kernel panic?
If the system automatically reboots before you can take
some notes about the kernel panic, try to give the
    command "b kadb -v" at the "(b) boot or (i) interpreter ..."
    prompt.
What's the size of the raid array?
What happens it you boot from the DCA floppy, add the scsi
raid drivers from the compaq itu floppy and boot from the
software 1 of 2 cdrom. After the GUI starts, try to
open a shelltool/commandtool window (right click on the
desktop background). From the commandtool window you
can try to fsck / mount the scsi raid array. Does that
    work?

  • Computer died while upgrading!

My friend was upgrading to SL and his battery died halfway through the installation. Now his macbook won't boot up, it gets to the apple and the loading page but it stays there. He wants to get his pictures off of his hard drive, does anyone have any ideas? I tried putting his hard drive in my macbook but it didn't make a difference.

    Kappy wrote:
Yes. Snow installs all the needed drivers for any current model. The only possible exceptions might be the new iMacs if they require a different build that includes the required drivers, but the older ones will still be there. Issues with the OEM discs are mainly (a) they simply won't start a later model Mac because they lack the drivers for the newer hardware; or (b) they won't work because they can't install the version required for the hardware. However, once installed on a hard drive they should start any computer with which it's compatible.
From the OP's question I don't think that would be a problem. SL 10.6.2 should work on any of the current flock of notebooks. Unless the model is a Late 2009 SL is fully compatible. Some Late 2009 Mac models do require a special build of 10.6.1 but not 10.6.2. If 10.6.2 is installed on a hard drive then it should boot any Mac model (but not so 10.6.1.)
If 10.6.2 is already installed it should start any compatible model. Some of the newest models do require special builds of 10.6.1, but 10.6.2 should start them without a problem. Of course Snow is not on DVD yet as 10.6.2, so booting from a retail version may be a problem for some of these latest models such as the i5 and i7 iMacs that require a later version than 10.6.
I don't think the above is as well-stated as I would like.
I think that only my monitor was awake when I ask the question too. I didn't state it very well. Here is what I was getting at. "We" (by "rule") say that one can't use the original install DVD for one computer to install on another.
So, what I am getting at is suppose the original Leo install DVD was used to install Leo on the broken computer (an MB still running Leo I presume). Then, would the drive from the old computer, if not broken itself, be usable on the friend's computer (MB)--noting that it must have come with Leo installed originally too via its own install DVD? If so, in a sense, then the "rule" mentioned above would be broken.
Continuing, if we get this far in breaking the "rule" then let's say the internal drive from the first machine is put into an external case. Then, could the drive be cloned to a partition on the first machine. If so, then it would seem that the "rule" is seriously broken except for the technicality that the install disk from the first machine wasn't installed by inserting into the second machine.
And, another related question is what if the first computer actually came with Tiger--an older version than Leopard? If so, and the drive worked on the second computer and cloning would work), then a second "rule" would be broken--the one saying that an older OS than came with a machine can't be installed on the machine.

  • Help! My pictures are missing after my battery died during an upload!

Help! My mac battery died while uploading pics from my iphone. When I rebooted the computer and opened Iphoto, all of my albums were there with what I assume to be the correct number of photos but in their place was the same photo over and over where the thumbnail should be. If I click on the photo, the correct one shows up. I saw a video on you tube that said to hit alt command while opening Iphoto to rebuild the database, but it says to back up the photos first. 1. I'm scared to do anything at this point. Any suggestions welcome please! This is the past 6 years of my life...marriage, house, baby!!

Back up your iPhoto library, Depress and hold the option (alt) and command keys and launch iPhoto - from the resulting first aid window rebud thumbnails, if still needed  repair permissions and if necessary rebuild your database

  • 440s wont boot up

just took delivery of brand new 440 s and it wont boot up , all i get is a blinking light , tried holding start  button for  40 seconds without battery and power connected ,still the same wont boot any ideas ??

    Hi,
    Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!
I’m sorry to hear that your Lenovo ThinkPad T440s is not booting up.
Remove the RAM, power it up and check if you hear beep sounds.  Reinstall the RAM, startup normally and check if the system boots normally.
If you have a spare good known battery and adapter, try powering on the system using the same just to ensure that it’s not a battery/adapter failure.
Please let me know the happenings!
    Best regards,
    Mithun.

  • Macbook ran out of battery while installing OS X Yosemite. Help!

My Macbook Pro accidentally ran out of battery while installing OS X Yosemite. When I turn it on something loads on the bottom of the apple logo and then it takes me to a white screen with a circle and dash through the middle and it wont do anything from there. Help!

The first rule of installation is connect the AC charger!
Reinstalling OS X Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Reinstalling OS X Without Erasing the Drive
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility and press the Continue button. After Disk Utility loads select the Macintosh HD entry from the the left side list.  Click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If Disk Utility reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit Disk Utility and return to the main menu.
Reinstall OS X: Select Reinstall OS X and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
