BC4J - Stored Procedures

The previous topics on the above topic and the sample applications go a long way to show how to use stored procedures as a source for a view object or entity object. However, the reference material does not show how to use a stored procedure that returns multiple rows as the source for an entity object.
Questions:
- Can a stored function that returns a reference cursor be used as the source for an entity object?
- How are multiple instances of the entity object handled in the doSelect method? Is there an approach like the "createRowFromResultSet" method used in a VO or does one simply need to iterate through the result set?
- Is there an example of handling multiple rows for an entity object, either with or without the use of a reference curor?

There are two stored procedure samples. Your "Dive into BC4j" tip and related topics provide a variation of the "Creating a View Object Based on a Static Set of Values" sample. I understand this approach.
The second sample, StoreProc, uses an approach described in the help topics: "About Using Stored Procedures" and "Calling Stored Procedures". The approach entails overriding the doSelect and doDML methods of an entended EntityImpl object. The sample and help topics only return one row.
My questions focus on how to handle a callable statement that returns multiple rows and how to populate the attribues of multiple instances of an EntityImpl.
Please consider by original questions in the context described herein.

  • Need help with BC4J/Struts application using a Stored Procedure

    I am doing a proof of concept for a new project using JDeveloper, Struts and BC4J. We want to reuse our Business logic that is currently residing in Oracle Stored Procedures.     I tried the above method, but I am having some trouble with it. I keep getting the error ORA-01008: not all variables are bound when I test it using the AppModule tester.

    I created the view object in expert mode so there is no entity object. Can someone help? I don't have much time left to finish this.
    Also, could I have done this from the Entity object instead of the view object by registering the ref cursor OUT parameter in handleStoredProcInsert()?

    This doesn't always work properly though. The first time I press the query button, the SerialNum parameter is still null, however if I re-execute the query by pressing the query button again. It will work, and return the rows. I always have to query twice. Also the SerialNum attribute is set to a String in my view object, it is a varchar column in the database, but some serial number I enter give a "Error Message: oracle.jbo.domain.Number ". This happens even though the underlying BC4J is returning values for the query. I also get a "500 Internal Server Error java.lang.ClassCastException: java.lang.String on my View object's code at line 65 which is

    This is an input paramter to the oracle stored procedure that defaults to a Number value of 1.

  • Calling stored procedure from BC4J

    How can I call a stored procedure in a JSP using the BC4J framework?

    Basically, you need to create a custom method from your JSP's ViewObject, which calls the stored procedure. You can then call the ViewObject's custom method from the JSP client.
    Here is how I have done it:
    1. Choose the ViewObject that your JSP is based on and choose 'Edit' from the context menu.
    2. On the Java tab of the ViewObject wizard, choose Generate Java File checkbox for the View Object Class and click the Finish button. A file is created under the ViewObject node in the Navigator named 'viewobjectImpl.java'.
    3. Open the viewobjectImpl.java file in the code editor and create a method to call your stored procedure (see sample code below).
    4. Compile the VOImpl.java file.
    5. Choose the view object again, and choose Edit again from the context menu.
    6. On the Client Methods tab, you should now see your method appear in the Available field. Select it and shuttle it to the Selected field.
    7. Click Finish to leave the VO wizard, and rebuild your Business Components project.
    8. In your JSP, call the custom method (see sample code below).

  • About BC4j and java stored procedure

    Is it possible create a java stored procedure using BC4j and deploy to Oracle9iR2 VM?
    If it is possible, how about the performance compare to PL/SQL stored procedure?

    In 9.0.3.3 it will be possible again. The ability to deploy a BC4J-based, local-mode Java Stored Procedure was broken in 9.0.3 before this upcoming maintenance release.
    PL/SQL will almost surely be faster if you are talking about just doing basic DML type of operations, when compared to Java stored procedures.

    Someone posted a similar request the other day. Here is my response to them:
    Basically, you need to create a custom method from your JSP's ViewObject, which calls the stored procedure. You can then call the ViewObject's custom method from the JSP client.
    Here is how I have done it:
    1. Choose the ViewObject that your JSP is based on and choose 'Edit' from the context menu.
    2. On the Java tab of the ViewObject wizard, choose Generate Java File checkbox for the View Object Class and click the Finish button. A file is created under the ViewObject node in the Navigator named 'viewobjectImpl.java'.
    3. Open the viewobjectImpl.java file in the code editor and create a method to call your stored procedure (see sample code below).
    4. Compile the VOImpl.java file.
    5. Choose the view object again, and choose Edit again from the context menu.
    6. On the Client Methods tab, you should now see your method appear in the Available field. Select it and shuttle it to the Selected field.
    7. Click Finish to leave the VO wizard, and rebuild your Business Components project.
    8. In your JSP, call the custom method (see sample code below).

  • Is BC4J a viabl option for database with stored procedure (ref cursor) API?

    I'm about to begin a Web application development project. As foundation, we have a (Oracle) database of certain complexity that have a data access API developed with PL/SQL packages.
    This API is designed to get data through stored procedures/functions that return REF CURSOR.
    Personally I have been investigating about Oracle ADF/JSF, and a number of others J2EE technologies, and at this moment I am doubting if ADF BC are a viable option to my development team.
    I think this because I have noticed that one of the great drawback in ADF BC is the lack of simplicity to get data through stored procedures/functions that returns REF CURSORS.
    I have been looking for documentation and the only thing that I have found are two examples:
    1.- One that really do not work (fails in get data from ref cursor): ADF BC StoredProcedure Sample application.
    2.- And other published by Steve Muench in
    http://radio.weblogs.com/0118231/stories/2003/03/03/gettingAViewObjectsResultRowsFromARefCursor.html. This sample works fine.
    But, the problem with the approach of this last article is the amount (and complexity) of the code necessary to make so basic and recurrent operation as is "obtain data through a stored procedure (ref cursor)".
    Below it is the code that I have constructed to call a function that returns a ref cursor (based on steve's article).
    If this is the only way to make this (historically so basic and simple) task, then it is obvious that BC is not a viable technology to my (or I am in a mistake?), since we have about 50 stored procedures/functions to access the underlying data; that stored procedures/functions are key to development of the new application (and, still more, currently are used to anothers apps ).
    By all this, I would like consult to Oracle's people:
    1.- I really must reject BC as technology to implement this project ?
    2.- It is possible to access stored procedures in a simpler way using BC?
    3.- If the answer to 2 is NOT: in near future, the BC team has plans to give more support to the simple access to stored procedures?
    4.- If the answer to 3 is NOT: what another technology you recommend to construct my data access/business tier and still be able to using the others characteristics of ADF?

    No. Not directly. What's the business requirement here so I can understand better?

    REF CURSOR would work fine, or if it's just the statement that needs to be generated dynamically, you could fetch the text of the SQL statement from the stored procedure, then use createViewObjectFromQueryStmt(). Although this has runtime overhead involved with describing the query.
    The REF CURSOR based approach is probably best for this.

    did you ever get a chance to read the error it is self explanatory. or else goggle it out to understand.
    It is not operation binding problem. while invoking the operation binding you are calling some db function from there you caught.
    coming to your requirement,
    create generate next number on base of type. please check will multi user environment it working properly or not.

  • Setting ViewObject Stored Procedure Where Clause Param from Struts Action

    I adapted/used Steve's example to get stored procedure to populate my ViewObject. However, I could not retrieve any rows after passing whereClause value from Struts action. The param in execureQueryForCollection returns null.

    Please help me.
    I need to execute an oracle stored procedure from a JSP.
    I'M using Jakarta Tomcat and I dont have the Oracle Jbo tags and no BC4j tags.
    Anyone have an example using standar tags or directives???.
    This an emergency call..!!!!!!

    To execute a stored procedure (Oracle or other), you must create a CallableStatement.
    Here is the link to the API description:

    You use it like a query but the the syntax is:
    {call <procedure-name>[<arg1>,<arg2>, ...]}

  • Invoke stored procedure cause strange exception

    Hi, I'm using JDev 11.1.2, the use case is: add a new row to the VO iterator filtered by some view criteria and call a stored procedure before commit.
    The application runs fine without calling the stored procedure, however, following exception will occur if it's called.
    The stored procedure will do some update to a remote DB2 via DB link. Though the exception stack trace shows that the SP has error, but if I run it separately in some SQL tool, it is ok.
    The "BO_SP" problem seems not to be caused by the 'new row state'.
    Does any one have any tips for this problem? Thanks!

    Hello! We are using BC/ADF JClient to select and for any DML operation against Oracle Lite database. We may have more than one user(s) log on to our application, so we requires to authenticate oracle lite user credential using JDBC dynamically.
    I am utilizing the features of JCLoginDialog.java and manipulation bc4j.xcfg file. This work real good for accepting username/password credentials dynamically, since we have multiple database in one computer I have to accept DSN name and if possible built my own configuration file.

    I have dblinks going all over the place. What you are talking about is a clustered or distributed database. That is the future (or present ) of large databases. My code is set up because an 'architecture' is not yet available in the database itself to support the concepts I've posted to Steve in other threads.
    I fully believe that we'll eventually have BC4J ( or something like it ) directly in the database. I fully believe that the database will load balance these across a cluster of databases, within the database structure itself. For example... there is NOTHING to stop the JVM from deciding that it needs to load balance and submit the thread to a remote machine for processing... independent of creating a "middle tier" outside the database.
    I believed that client-server model was flawed for most (not all) applications in the 80's. Looking at the "application tier" model I have the same feeling that we're creating an overly complex scheme at the wrong layer... just pushed back one stage so that we have to rewrite everything...
    If you go back to the megalithic server design ( or cluster of servers ) with a thin thin front end... just why is the middle tier needed under the scenario I've outlined?
    As such, stored procedures/triggers be they in java or pl/sql seems best bet to me... seeing's how a call spec to java or a pl/sql wrapper is transparent to the caller using jdbc or any other future technology.
