Benefits in oracle 10.2.0.3 RHEL 4 over oracle 9.2.0.8

Dear Team,
we are currently changing the database box for one of our customer database
i seek your assistance for the below plan
We have planned to migrage from oracle 9.2.0.8 to oracle 10.2.0.3 (RHEL 4). , if you share the differences and benefits in managing and administrative perspective
my management will decide based on this.
your assistance is highly appreciated
Thanks,
Aj

For first why not to choose latest available patchset 10.2.0.4 instead of 10.2.0.3?
The biggest difference will be Enterprise manager with all those cool features which makes easier administration.
For more differences look at new features guide:
http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/server.102/b14214/chapter1.htm
And for management the best argument is - 9i is not supported anymore.
But of course look at features as well.

  • Any benefits of Oracle Transparent Gateway to connect to MSSQLServer ?

What are the benefits of Oracle 10G's Oracle Transparent Gateway to connect to MSSQL Server ?

Please be aware all gateways including the free component hsodbc up to release 10.2 have been desupported by 15th of Marcg 2008 and customers should use the follow up products.
The follow up product of TG4MSQL is Database gateway for MS SQl Server v11 and the follow up product of HSODBC is Database gateway for ODBC V11. The V11 gateway are certified with older Oracle database - but you might apply a gateway compatibility patch to the Oracle database release.
There are a lot of differences between DG4MSQL (TG4MSQL) and DG4ODBC (HSODBC):
    - DG4MSQL supports many more functions it can directly map to SQl Server equivalents - DG4ODBC only suppors a few functions it can directly map to the equivalenst of a foreign database and all other functions are post processed. Post processing means ALL records from the remote table are fetched into the Oracle database and the result is then processed locally. Depending on the amount of data in the foreign table it might take a while
    - DG4MSQL can call remote stored procedures
    - DG4MSQL can participate in distributed transactions. This for example allows you to pass data changes in an Oracle table directly in the same transaction to the SQL Server side using triggers. Or you can also use STREAMS to replicate data between both databases.

  • Persuading Boss on benefits of ORacle and XML

We had reports built with VB6 running against Oracle 9i to create Excel reports:
) User request a report from ASP web interface.
    2) VB6 makes inline call to ORacle 9i to create reports. There is a call for each data cell. (a YTD report can take over 1 hour to run)
    3) VB6 creates Excel report and put in a directory on the same database server. (Directory contains roughly 13000 files from beginning of 2008)
    4) 1 hour+ later, the user goes back to the interface to see if report has completed.
In March, vendor made us move to Oracle 10g otherwise no support.
I have redesigned the system to VB.NET and now create PDF files instead of XL, using ITextSharp. I've also moved code from program into stored procedures that enable program to make only 1 call to database. End result:I can run report 4 reports in less than 45 seconds.
    1) REquest report from interface
    2) Assuming there is no timeout, receives report both in browser and hard-disk in 45 seconds.
I have other ideas about which for which I solicit your opinions:
    1) The data that populates reports becomes stagnant after 2 months because no one is making changes to the data. Why not take these PDF reports or the raw XML and store in database. Give each report a key, and design another table with woth a "dataChanged" flag that will be set if data has changed (via a trigger maybe). When a request is made for a report over 2 months old, program will check the data-changed flag and run the report again, other the report from the database will be served. This way we avoid a directory of 10000 files where it takes 45 seconds to download a file to Excel, or PDF for that matter, for viewing. ( I work for a small franchise, but I really think this scenario would be helpful in doctors office)
    2) XML and PDF are intutive for me. IT is the way that the industry has moved. Some very smart people had a meeting a long time ago, analyzed the benefits of moving to this new type of architecture. The industry agreed and conformed. My boss however wants to know the cost-benefit of having files in database vs. having them on hard drive. I could not answer intelligently. Can anyone share their ROI results from this type of architecture?
    3) I'm not a database programmer by default, especially Oracle He also wanted to know how much space would be required to house the XML reports. An average report size is 200kb with 20 new reports on Mondays and 10 on other days. XML would increase the size of data store in DB because there is lots of "just-in-case" data not actually used on reports.
    4) He wants to remove ORacle from the 9i server, which i use as a development platform. (I actually havent used because of some differences between the 2 which would impact some techniques used in stored procedures.) He doesn't see a real use for it mainly because most vendor packages he has looked at have SQL server back-ins because they are Microsoft centric. I would like to keep because you always need a backup server. Also, I can't create database and/or do lots of develpment on the 10g machine because if something goes wrong, vendor will blame us for corrupting data environment. IS he right.
Several other ideas I have on making a more efficient process but these are the ones about which my boss has had questions.
    Thanks in advance

    1. Sounds like a good idea to me. You can store either XML or PDFs. If you store the PDFs you can find what you need here:
    http://www.morganslibrary.org/reference/dbms_lob.html
    to load and unload them.
    2. Files belong inside the database. The database is backed up ... the file system may not be. The database provides an additional layer of security against deletion. The database also, if you move to 11g (which you should do) and buy the additional license from Oracle that allows use of SecureFile storage additionally is faster than access of files and gives you built in encryption, compression, and deduplication.
    http://www.morganslibrary.org/reference/securefiles.html
In 11gR2 there is the POSIX DBFS file system where these improvements are greatly enhanced over operating system file capabilities.
    3. I'm not a fan of storing XML. I'd store the PDFs. First off it will be faster and secondly it will take up substantially less storage. There is nothing efficient about using two multibyte tags to store a single byte of data.
    4. He is wrong, most likely, on all accounts. Especially on moving to SQL Server if there is any patient data involved. If you are in the US you will be in violation of HIPAA federal requirements the minute you move to SQL Server as you an not audit access.

  • Oracle 11g Enterprise vs Satandard Edition

    Dear All,
I would be most grateful if you please tell me what are the benefits of Oracle 11g Database Enterprise Edition over Oracle 11g Database Satandard Edition. Don't consider license money. If you would please provide me detailed comparision of these both plus send me link on that I will be thanks ful.
    Kind regards.
    GM

    Oracle Enterprise Edition:
Enterprise Edition is the full (top of the range) version or the Oracle Database Server. Options like RAC, Partitioning, Spatial, etc. can be purchased separately to enhance the functionality of the database.
    Oracle Standard Edition:
Standard Edition is designed for smaller businesses and enterprises. It offers a subset of the features/ functionality implemented in Enterprise Edition. Database options like Data Guard, Partitioning, Spatial, etc. is not available with Standard Edition (from 10g one can use RAC with Standard Edition). Standard Edition can only be licensed on servers with a maximum capacity of four processors.

  • (9I) OMF(ORACLE MANAGED FILES)

ORACLE SERVER
(9I) OMF(ORACLE MANAGED FILES)
    ==============================================
    PURPOSE
    - Oracle Managed Files, Delete Datafiles, Default Temporary Tablespace.
    Explanation
    1. Oracle Managed Files (OMF)
Control File, Online Redo Log File, Data File
    1) Benefits of Oracle Managed Files
Portable Application
    2) Oracle Managed File Configurations
DB_CREATE_FILE_DEST : data file
DB_CREATE_ONLINE_LOG_DEST_n : online redo log와 control file들이 위치하게
    Note :
    Note : DB_CREATE_FILE_DEST 파라미터는 정의되어 있지만 DB_CREATE_ONLINE_LOG_DEST_n
(Data Files, Control Files,
    3) Oracle Managed File Name Structure
    Control Files : ora_%u.ctl
    Redo Log Files : ora_%g_%u.log
    Data Files : ora_%t_%u.dbf
    Temporary Data Files : ora_%t_%u.tmp
    Note :
%u is an 8 character string that guarantees uniqueness.
%t is the tablespace name, truncated if necessary.
%g is the redo log file group number.
ora_ identifies the file as an Oracle Managed File.
    4) Managing Control Files with OMF
DB_CREATE_ONLINE_LOG_DEST_n에 정의된 디렉토리에 Control File이 기본적으로
    Control File
    5) Managing Online Redo Log Files with OMF
    수 있다.
    SQL> ALTER DATABASE ADD LOGFILE;
Note : 이 경우 해당 redo log file은 DB_CREATE_ONLINE_LOG_DEST_n에 정의된
    DB_CREATE_FILE_DEST 디렉토리에 생성된다.
    삭제된다.
    SQL> ALTER DATABASE DROP LOGFILE GROUP 3;
Note : Archived Log File은 OMF일 수 없다.
    6) Managing Tablespaces with OMF
아래와 같이 테이블스페이스를 생성하면 DB_CREATE_FILE_DEST에 정의된
    (Autoextend On, Unlimited Restriction)
    SQL> CREATE TABLESPACE TBS1;
    SQL> CREATE TABLESPACE TBS1 DATAFILE SIZE 400M AUTOEXTEND OFF;
    SQL> ALTER TABLESPACE TBS1 ADD DATAFILE;
    삭제된다.
    SQL> DROP TABLESPACE TBS1;
    SQL> ALTER SYSTEM SET DB_CREATE_FILE_DEST = '/disk2/oradata/';
    다음과 같이 하면 된다.
    SQL> ALTER SYSTEM SET DB_CREATE_FILE_DEST = '';
    Example
    As SYSTEM
    DB_CREATE_FILE_DEST 파라미터 값 정의
    SQL> alter session set db_create_file_dest='/d02/ora9i/oracle/dbs/ora9i/tbs_omf';

  • Oracle 10gR2 LARGE PAGE SIZE on Windows 2008 x64 SP2

    Hello Oracle Experts,
What are the advantages of Large Page Size and how would I know when my DB will benefit from Large Page Sizes?
My undeqrstanding is on Windows x64 – 8kb default page size – will now be 2 MB. Will this speed up accesses to buffer cache? If so is there a latch wait that I can monitor before vs. after to verify that large page size has improved performance?
My Database server has 256GB RAM and SGA is set to 180GB. I am quite sure the overhead involved in maintaining a large number of 8kb allocations (as opposed to 2MB) must be high - how can i monitor this?
I am planning to follow the procedure here:
    http://download.oracle.com/docs/html/B13831_01/ap_64bit.htm#CHDGFJJD
The DB is for SAP on a 8CPU/48 core IBM x3950. For some reason SAP documentation does not mention anything about this registry setting or even if Large Page Size is supported in the SAP world.
Part 2 : I notice that more recent Oracle patch sets (example 25) turn NUMA OFF by default. Why is this and what is the impact of disabling NUMA on a system like x3950 (which is a NUMA based server)?
My understanding is Oracle would no longer know that some memory is Local (and therefore fast) and some memory is Remote (therefore slow). Overall I am guessing this could cause a real performance issue on this DB.
    -points for detailed reply!
    thanks a lot -

    Hello
Thanks for your reply. I am very interested to hear further about the limitations of Windows 2008 and the benefits of Oracle Linux.
Generally we find that Windows 2008 has been pretty good, a big improvement over Windows 2003 (bluescreens don't occur ever etc)
Can you advise further about Large Page Size for the buffer cache? I assume this applies on both Windows and Linux (I am guessing there is a similiar parameter for 10gR2 on Linux).
SAP have not yet fully supported Oracle 11g so this is why 11g has not made it into the SAP world yet.
Can you also please advise about NUMA? regardless of whether we run Linux or Windows this setting needs to be considered.
    Thanks

  • Oracle Project Management and Oracle HCM integration????

Is there any benefits of Oracle Project Management for users of Oracle HCM?? Can they be integrated and how?

ERP systems were built because you could use various products like Fin, HCM, CRM, Project accounting etc seamlessly as all are built by the same provider and you will have less interface headache.
So, based on what your company's requirements, you can choose to implement one or more of the products.

  • Difference between RH Linux Administration & Oracle Enterprise Linux

    Dear Gentlemen,
what is the difference between the RedHat Linux Administration & Oracle Enterprise Linux System Administration (Training & Certifications)
    Thanks Alot.

Thanks Alot.OEL is an extremely close clone of RHEL; so training for one has very good synergy with the other.
Please remember there are 2 major version of RHEL (and OEM) in current use, namely RHEL 4 and RHEL 5. (With RHEL 6 over the horizon, currently in Beta 1 since april).
The RHCT and RHCE certifications are RHEL 5 based on practical exams and are typcially well respected.
I believe the current OEL certifications are OEL 4 based and are based on multiple choice exams.
Training orientated for Certifications for one of these will have a low to mid synergy with the required certification training for the other.

  • Oracle AS vs JBOSS

Hello there! I'm new to Oracle AS as I always say... I'm working on a Oracle Advantage Partner / Oracle Approved Education Center. Tomorrow we're going on a client to give the many benefits of Oracle's AS. But we need to face JBoss people there. I have a 3 years experience with JBoss not always a happy story. Could someone point me the strengths of Oracle AS related to JBoss? Is there a comparison table for it? I know its kinda late for it, we're in a hurry for that, sorry.
If someone could give me this kind of information please help me out here.
    Regards

    Hello
Actually I don't know about a comparison. But I'm pretty sure you can find somethig in the partners network.
    http://partner.oracle.com/
As you're a partner, your account will have access to many info that can help you out.
If you already found some papers or so, plese share it here, so others partners, like us, can benefit.

  • Hung installing Adaptative Agent in RHEL Virtualized

    Hello,
I have a RHEL virtualized over Citrix xen, when I try to deploy de Zenworks Adaptative Agent, It is installed correctly but the task hang up when the device try to do the registration step. Checking the logs I can see a message that say "Device OS target not supported!".
I am thinking that when the server reply to the Zenworks server, it show itshelf like a kernel version "2.6.18-194.el5xen" and not recognize the os version.
    Is this possible??
    Thanks in advance,
    Ricard Alias

In the adaptative client logs I can see:

    In my Server I see
Red Hat Enterprise Linux Server release 5
    and
Red Hat Enterprise Linux Server release 6
    I don't see a 5.5
Now, It don't know if 5.5 SHOULD match because of the substring notation
I don't know if it needs to be added to the supported list.
I don't know if it would need extra testing to be added to the supported

  • Sun Cluster.. Why?

What are the advantages of installing RAC 10.2.0.3 on a Sun Cluster.? Are there any benefits?

Oracle 10g onward, there is no such burning requirement for Sun Cluster (or any third party cluster) as far as you are using all Oracle technologies for your Oracle RAC database. You should Oracle RAC with ASM for shared storage and that would not require any third party cluster. Bear inmind that
You may need to install Sun Cluster in the following scenarios:
    1) If there is applicaiton running with in the cluster along with Oracle RAC database that you want to configure for HA and Sun Cluster provide the cluster resourced (easy to use) to manage and monitor the application. THIS can be achieved with Oracle Clusterware but you will have to write your own cluster resource for that.
    2) If you want to install cluster file system such as QFS then you will need to install the Sun Cluster. If this cluster is only running the Oracle RAC database then you can rely on Oracle technologies such as ASM, raw devices without installing Sun Cluster.
    3) Any certification conflicts.
    Any correction is welcome..
