Best battery time for video

Some users in far-east asia are reporting that 60GB model battery time is 6 ~ 7 hrs for continuous video play back, and 30GB model is showing 3.5 ~ 4 hrs video play time.
(Yep, music play time is not an issue at all because it's 10 times of video play time, as you guess.)
However, according to the posts, encoded video files should be very well optimized to iPod video performance, which means that, I guess, some specific video encoding settings are very critical for the battery time.
Well I wish I can figure out what's the best settings.
My 30GB model showed 2 hrs video play time for .mp4, 368x192, 30fps, 768kbps, 44kHz, 128kbps movie.
If anybody can post your experience, it would be helpful.
Thanks,

Other people said that H.264 is the most optimized vifeo format for 5G iPOD. So H.264 format consumes less power than mp4 format. Is that correct?
Any comments are welcome.

  • Personal Best Battery Time

Got my best battery time yesterday. 8:48 use and 1 day 4 hrs standby. I have to admit I wasn't using anything that taxing. No games but several calls, a lot of web and some Youtube. I don't expect to get this every day but I was impressed. I usually get about 4 + hrs. of use.

It all depends what you do. "Usage" is to generic to make accurate comparisons. It all depends on what you do. I can get 12 hours usage and 2 days standby if I only do music. Unfortunately the usage meter doesn't break things down beyond seperating between "calls minutes" and being "on". There is no way to distinguish between 4 hours of data or 4 hours of music except for inferring from the data usage section. Just saying I got 8 hours of battery time doesn't tell the full story.
The iPhone is rated for the following:
    Talk time:
Up to 5 hours on 3G
Up to 10 hours on 2G
Standby time: Up to 300 hours
    Internet use:
Up to 5 hours on 3G
Up to 6 hours on Wi-Fi
Video playback: Up to 7 hours
Audio playback: Up to 24 hours
Now these times are for individual functions. To get 300 hours of standby, you have to have everything off. To get 7 hours of video, you probably need the screen on its lowest brightness and have the phone in Airplane mode with WiFi and other services off. Same for Audio playback.

What is the best export setting for video from premeire to blogger.com or blogspot.com

I have not been able to find the technical limits/specs for the site Blogger or blogspot.com. That is why I made the post here thinking some Adobe users may have experimented already and come up with good export settings for AVI DV video to a format optimized for Blogger.

I know I could opt for the most expensive and probably get what I want that way, but I´m not made of money, so what are your suggestions for minimum criteria and which would you recommend?

MacBooks Pro are great Macs with a good hardware, so all of them will work for the use you want, but I think that you want the biggest display possible because of your uses. In this case, it has to be a 15-inch non-Retina MacBook Pro, with the settings you want. Note that, after buying the Mac, you can upgrade the HDD and memory without voiding the warranty, so you are free to install as much memory and the HDD size you want after buying it. It's my opinion, but you are free to do whatever you think it's better

It is the GPU that is important.  All the CPU's will be fast enough.  If you can affords it, the 15" with the NVIDIA GPU is the best.

  • Best Apple Computer for Video Editing (when you're on a budget)?

I shoot video on a Canon XL2 and edit with Final Cut Express. I am looking to get a more powerful computer to edit as I currently edit on a 2007/8 MacBook with 120GB hard drive. It gets the job done but rendering takes forever and I can tell my MacBook is slowing down. What is the best apple computer for video editing? And, what would you recommend if you're on a budget? iMac? MacBook Pro? Thanks for any and all help.

    Well, depending on budget...
Today, this would be my personal choice...

  • Best AF practice for video

I'm using a EOS 7D for shooting 1080p HD video. New to the camera and DSLR for video. I've looked at several tutorials but still don't have a good understanding of what the best practices are for focusing.
If I put the camera in AI Servo will it auto focus if the subject moves away or toward me with out me depressing the back AF-ON or shutter button? Or must I press one of those buttons to make the camera continue focus?
Do you know of any tutorials or video teachings that go through using focus with video?
    Thanks in advance!
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

The 7D is not going to perform continuous auto-focus in video.  AI Servo mode is for still photography.  The 70D _will_ perform continuous auto-focus during video and does an outstanding job of it (due to it's ability to do phase-detect AF directly on the camera sensor.)
Every camera *other* than the 70D (including all other brands -- the 70D is unique right now) have to do "contrast detect" auto-focus.  Contrast detect has to analyze contrast differences between adjacent pixels, make an adjustment and then evaluate if the contrast increased or decreated.  That tells the camera if it's even focusing in the right direction... then it has to re-focus, re-evaluate, re-focus, re-evaluate... until it finally optimizes contast and that means the image is finally focused.  This results in a game of "focus hunt".  It's slower and anyone watcing the video will see the camera hunt for focus.
The better way is to manually focus the camera.  If you were making a more serious video you'd even pre-plan the focus changes -- and wrap a piece of tape around the focus ring and use a marker to place the focus points on the ring (you pre-focus the camera to each position you plan to use during that clip).  Having done this you can smoothly move focus from subject to subject just by looking at the marks you made on your focus ring.  This isn't going to help you in ad-hoc video clips -- it's what you'd do if you were thinking about film-making.
The 7D will re-focus if you press the AF-ON button... but it will focus hunt when it does this.

  • Best categorizing program for video?

I would think that categorizing video clips for easy searches would be getting more and more popular now that hard drive space for storing files is more affordable. I've been trying to get my media organized in FCP and am now realizing that I need a separate program for categorization. Ive narrowed my search to two.. idive and foottracker.
Does anyone have any experience with foottracker and idive? Any recommendations or pros and cons of those programs?
I went through a similar dilemma when I was first trying to categorize my digital camera pictures. Apple did not have iphoto at that time so I bought a 3rd party program (iview) and as iphoto got more and more integrated with other apple software I had to redo all my keywording to work with iphoto.
Foottracker seems to function the most like iphoto for video.. Maybe Ill get lucky and apple will buy out foottracker and make it part of the ilife suite? I have a feeling Ill buy a 3rd party program.. then apple will make an integrated one and Ill have to start from scratch again.
    Thanks!

can iview keep track of time codes?
    Yes, IIRC.
    import video?
    Yes.
break long files into subclips to assign keywords to sections? import into fcp? etc..
    No....
Well, now you've hit on the central point, and why I don't use any of these apps having tried them out.
You know what the best database for cataloguing video is? You're using it. It's called Final Cut Pro. (Or Avid, or your NLE of choice). FCP is the bets place to categorise and sort your footage, and that's just that. Any external software that did it - well, you'd just end up importing that info into FCP anyway.

  • What is the best set up for video editing?

What is the best computer? The best software? The best external storage? The best ram? 3D editing? Everything!!!!!!
Running full HD and 720p at 60 fps videos. Clips ranging from a few seconds to 10-30 minutes.
    Cost isn't an issue.
What is the best set up, not the most excessive. If it doesn't need to be there or it isn't greatly needed I would like to know. This is looking at the production aspects, not the camera and such. What is the best plug in for slow motion? Pros and Cons of the set up?
I would greatly appriciate everyones input in this. Thank you so much.

That is a hard question to answer.. Nothing is best for everyone... However if i am to generalize it I would put it this way.. If you want to cut everything from a short promos to hollywood pictures..
A high end windows pc (only cause mac pro hasn't been updated in ages)
Avid Media Composer with Nitrus DX
    Two monitors
    Broadcast monitor
    HD Deck
    pimping 5.1 speakers
    A good mixer
You are looking at over 70,000 or 80,000, could even approach even more.. HD decks run atleast 15k.
If price is not an issue then there you go....
However this is not realistic for most people nor best solution by no means... I run a macbook pro with Avid (as primary) Final Cut 7, Final Cut X (for practice, didn't have to use it for a job yet), and Premiere (just in case)
I am a final cut child who grew up on it and love it however everything I am doing in last few years is on AVID...
    Have a second monitor..
I am very portable and rest of the gear I usually get where ever I work at.. I am looking into getting a good broadcast monitor connected with AJA thunderbolt..
Like I said this is very open question, there is no (BEST) it all depends what you will be doing.. If you get AVID (which can do everything, however is cluncky as **** and counter intuitive) but you are only cutting wedding videos and short format stuff, it would be an overkill galore.. Just get FCP X in that case... Simple, easy, one app...
Be more specific and you will get clearer answers..

  • Best export settings for video for web

Can anyone give me some advice on the best export settings for a short video that is to be viewed on the web? I have some short, say 2 minute videos that need to be placed on a website and need a reasonable file size. What would the best Format and Preset options be in Premiere? Would it be helpful to utilize After Effects to reduce file size? Thank you in advance to anyone who has some advice!!

For now, it would be on my own website or a clients website. But there may
be another possibility, I have a client that already has some videos
available for viewing on their website, looks like they are YouTube videos
that play on their site, and there is an option to "Watch on YouTube". So I
guess I would love some recommended export settings for a straightforward
video clip on my website, and if I need to explore the YouTube preset in
Premiere, let me know. Thank you, I really appreciate your answers and
    help!!

  • Best display profile for video editing

Among the choices you see under Display Profile on a Mac, what is considered "best" choice for video editing, so that you can assess color, exposure, etc. in your footage as you edit? I have always used Adobe RGB (1998), but realize that I have no knowledge about whether that's a good choice.
What do the 'good' editors use (to differentiate them from guys like me)? Do top editors calibrate their monitors for video editing? Any insights into this would be greatly appreciated!
    -- Mark Strand

what is considered "best" choice for video editing
there is only one setting for Final Cut; Generic RGB
This is an apple stipulation, its how Final Cut must be set up, choosing any other profile will cause problems with any out put files you create.
Do top editors calibrate their monitors for video
ICC colour management is designed and can only be used for still image files eg. so while you can calibrate a computer monitor it can only be used with still image files; TIFF CRW JPEG PSD. ICC profiles are not recognised by Final Cut Pro or QuickTime.
The colour management system used in video involves using video scopes, an accurate PAL or NTSC colour monitor and tools like the 3 way colour corrector.

  • IPad app - self timer for video?

I'm looking for an app for my iPad 2 that is a self timer for the camera when in video mode.  I'd like it to delay at least 10 seconds and it would be great if I could preset the recording time to say, 5 or 10 seconds.   I've looked but can't seem to find anything.
    Thanks, Brad

Here are some additional info: I've emailed the developers of Gorilla Cam and following their suggestion I've turned off my iPhone and after restarting it worked ok... for some time. Camera Awesome and Camera+ also works ok after iPhone restart.
I take a lot of photos and it looks like every few hundreds of them I need to restart the phone.

  • Best affordable choice for video editing & other stuff?

I've been a PC user forever. I'm looking to enter the world of Mac. I do video editing with Adobe CC on a windows 7 Destop PC with an i7 Quadcore and have a nice LED monitor. I'd like a Mac capable of doing graphics well and has the processing power of an i7. I was thinking of a Macbook rather than than a iMac because I don't need the built in screen - I already have a very nice LED monitor. I also like the idea of portability. So I figure i could hook up the Macbook to my LED monitor when at my desk, and then be able to port it around when I wanted to go mobile. Is this reasonable? Is a macbook laptop capable of this kind of processing? I know my HP Powerbook with Win7 struggles doing this kind of stuff even though it has a dedicated nVidea Graphics and is an i7 2.3GHz with 16G memory, so I never use my HP laptop for video editing. I thought about the Mac Pro, but that is WAY out of my budget. Is there a Macbook that would be good for video editing and not break the bank? Like I've said, I'v discounted the idea of getting an iMac because of space & (I already have a decent size LED monitor that I'd like to continue to use and share with my Windows PC.

  • Best conversion method for video so that it is viewable on my ATV and Touch

I have a bunch of home videos, podcasts, and movies that I would like to put in a format so they play well on my ATV and iPod Touch. The home videos were created in iMovie and shared to my iPod (using the link in iMovie). All play on my ATV, only some play on my ipod touch. Basically I want to convert or create all my video once and have it play on both devices. Any help would be appreciated.

I'd agree too, and indeed where I want video for my iphone I export it as a separate movie. However the OP has specifically stated the goal of having one movie to do all jobs.
In this case exports have to be targeted for the ipod/iphone and not the tv. How this is achieved depends on the video that is being converted. For the types of video mentioned by the OP, handbrake is not the answer.
Where possible avoid doubling up on processing, so from imovie export for the ipod/iphone (this varies depending on which imovie you use. For videos that aren't in imovie, the 'create ipod or iphone version' option from the advanced menu in itunes will do the job in most cases. Other tools you might use are Quicktime or even mpegstreamclip if your source video is either mpeg1 or mpeg2.
