Best book for a beginner non-photography

Hello,
I am a small business owner and have paid to have my logo and business cards created. Now that I have the files I would like to learn how to edit these files…such as adding things to my business card and using them to create posters/signs…ect. I’m not really interested in using for photography.
I have adobe photoshop CS5.1 windows
Thanks

Skyhigh,
I do not want to get too far afield of what you have asked for, but would like to give you a little something to think about:
Photoshop is build around Raster Images, i.e. Images composed of pixels. Most of the formats that you mention are pixel-based formats. While those can be Scaled, within reason, they do not offer the flexibility, that a Vector-based Image can. That is why most logo work is done in Vector-based formats, such as AI - total Scability - as has been mentioned.
For the use, that you describe (if I read it correctly), you might be better served to use Adobe Illustrator, which you already have, and adding Adobe InDesign. It is a page-design program, and can do such things, as business cards, with ease. It even comes with some popular Templates, where you would just add the elements, and Type, required, and would end up an 8.5 x 11 page of cards, that could be handed off to a commercial printer, or even run through a good desktop inkjet, or laser, using something like the Avery "clear-edge" business card stock.
InDesign will work wih Raster, or Vector art (what you already have, and have paid for), and handles Type much better, than does Photoshop.
I am not saying that one cannot create and then print business cards (only one application here) from Photoshop, but that it is likely not the ultimate tool for that purpose.
I also highly recommend Adobe TV, but you may have to spend some time finding the tutorials, that will help you.
Good luck, and just something to think about.

  • Best books for a beginner.

I am in a Java class right now, and the material as it has been presented has been very confusing. I really want to get a good understanding of Java, my question is: What are the best books for someone that is starting to learn Java? I was looking through different reviews of Java books, and Just Java 2 by Peter van der Linden sounds good, but I want the book to explain Java in the simplest form as possible.
If I could get some more recommendations I would appreciate it.
    Thanks.

Head First Java is wonderful, but I wouldn't use that book on its own. It's a lot of theory, but very few examples and no programming exercises. Some books tell you how to do something, but they don't tell you why it works, so you end up unable to program anything that isn't exactly like what they showed you. Head First Java really gets into the why and it's great for making you think like a programmer, especially if the object-oriented thinking isn't coming naturally. But you need a book that has more of a tutorial format in addition to Head First.

  • Best book for beginner?

    Hello,
Can anyone recommend the best book for a complete novice to Illustrator?
Ive a background in GIS and am wanting to learn to improve my cartographic skills.
Does anyone know if theres a book out there that caters towards cartography in illustrator?
Anyway to get started and learn the basics any preference between Adobe Illustrator CS5 Classroom in a Book:
    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Adobe-Illustrator-CS5-Classroom-Book/dp/032170178X/ref=sr_1_1?ie=U TF8&qid=1306750888&sr=8-1
    and
The Adobe Illustrator CS5 Wow! Book:
    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Adobe-Illustrator-CS5-Wow-Book/dp/0321712447/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qi d=1306750974&sr=8-1
    Thanks for any help/advice!!

The WOW book is really for someone with a working knowledge of illustrator and in my opinion pretty useless especially for a beginner.
Classroom in a Book is an instructional book with tutorials to follow and will give you a working knowledge of how Illustrator works.
Mordy Goldings Book Real World Illustrator will give essentially instructional use of the program similar to informatio in the help files but in an instructional way organized fro the beginning to to end of the features.
As far as for Cartography I do not know why there is not one on the market as one of he contributors to the WOW book is a cartographer.
Illustrator is used a lot by map makers so it would probably be a good idea to have such a book.

  • Best book for Web Services

Can you suggest me what's best book for Web Services and XML to study? I'm planning to buy..
    Thanks in advance..

Why does it need to be the best one? What would that even mean? Just buy something reputable, like an O'Reilly book, it's not going to be so horrifically poor that you can't learn from it

  • So iWeb is dead? what is the next best thing for a beginner?

    Hi Guys,
I have my new Mac and i want to build my first website....with iWeb dead, what is the next best web builder for a beginner like me...? I want to creat a blog add the odd photo and link to my twitter page. Thats about it.....any suggestions?
    Many thanks
    Ian

Are you saying that you have an iWeb blog hosted on a 3rd party ftp server which allows visitors to add comments? That would be a first since the following has always been part of iWeb's Help file:
Features Unavailable When Publishing to a 3rd Party Server:
    ◼ Password protection
    ◼ Blog and photo comments
    ◼ Blog search
    ◼ Hit counter
The following is a screenshot of  iWeb Help on publishing to an ftp server:
Currently if the site is published directly from iWeb to the 3rd party server the RSS feed and slideshow subscription features will work. However, if the site is first published to a folder on the hard drive and then uploaded to the sever with a 3rd party FTP client those two feature will be broken.

  • What is the best book for Analysis Server 2012??

What is the best published book for SSAS 2012?

Thanks for the recommendation, Shankar! I would like to point out that the answer depends on what you mean by "SSAS 2012". Here are a few other recommendations...
If it's SSAS 2012 Tabular, then yes, "SQL Server Analysis Services 2012: The BISM Tabular Model"
is an option - but as a co-author I'm obviously biased! Teo Lachev's book, "Applied Microsoft
SQL Server 2012 Analysis Services: Tabular Modeling" covers some of the same ground and is also very good. If you're just interested in DAX, Rob Collie's book "DAX
Formulas for PowerPivot" is worth a look - even though it's for PowerPivot, the DAX language is the same as in SSAS Tabular.
For SSAS 2012 Multidimensional, because not much has changed since SSAS 2008, any book for 2008 or 2008 R2 will still be relevant. I haven't seen the 2012 edition, but editions of "Professional
Microsoft SQL Server 2012 Analysis Services with MDX and DAX" for older versions of SSAS were good general introductions; "Microsoft
SQL Server Analysis Services 2008 Step-By-Step" is also good. For more experienced developers there's another book I co-wrote, "Expert
Cube Development with SQL Server 2008" (a refresh for SSAS 2012 is coming later this year); and for the really advanced SSAS developer who wants to understand the internals of the product there's "Microsoft
SQL Server 2008 Analysis Services Unleashed", written by Edward Melomed and several other senior members of the SSAS dev team at the time. For MDX beginners I'd recommend "Microsoft
SQL Server 2008 MDX Step--By-Step", and for more advanced MDX there's "MDX with Microsoft
SQL Server 2008 R2 Analysis Services Cookbook".
For the whole Microsoft BI stack, Brian Larson's books are always good (eg "Delivering Business
Intelligence with SQL Server 2012") and cover more than just SSAS, although they go into less detail.
    HTH,
    Chris
Check out my MS BI blog I also do
SSAS, PowerPivot, MDX and DAX consultancy
and run public SQL Server and BI training courses in the UK

  • Best book for Web Developer learning flash

I've gotten far on my own just using online tutorials and dinking around in Flash on my own but my boss(es) are starting to ask for more complex stuff that I simply can't learn by just piecing together my Flash education.
I know there's many, many books out there that will teach you Flash but can anyone recommend any particular one(s) that are more concentrated in creating Web elements as opposed to game or animation development?
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

  • Best book for designing and architecting a java application?

    Hi,
Please recommend the best book(s) in the market or on line tutorials which would help me architect and design a java application using SWING.
I have used most of the swing components in many small GUI apps I have developed [JTable, JTree, etc, etc ....] and do not need a beginners books [online tutorials at sun site are good for that]. A book tackling advance topics, which may not concentrate on coding but has very good cases to understand the design [both class level and usuablity] and architecture of the application.
I need to develop an editor for a GUI based language + a code genertor + mapper application [which will run as a application and may use webstart to run from a browser.]
    THANKS !

I like "Pure JFC Swing" it's got a well written example for each and every Swing component. When I was learning to use swing each component I came across I could easily look at the example for that component and incorporate it into code for my app. That combined with the Javadoc was all I've ever needed.

  • What is the best books for MCSA 2012

pleas can you advice me what are the best books and materials for pass MCSA 2012?
    thank you.

    Hi, HFAA.
I understand you want to earn the MCSA title for something with a version number of
    2012.
There are six (6) different MCSA certification titles currently available. Two of them are version 2012, which are Windows Server 2012 and SQL Server 2012. Here is the web page that describes all six (6) MCSA titles:
    http://www.microsoft.com/learning/en-us/mcsa-certification.aspx
I am going to assume that you are interested in the most popular MCSA 2012 title:
    MCSA: Windows Server 2012.
The MCSA: Windows Server 2012 description web page is located here:
    http://www.microsoft.com/learning/en-us/mcsa-windows-server-certification.aspx
    Exams
You need to pass three (3) required exams to earn this title. If you click each of the links below, you will find the exams' descriptions with a
Skills measured section describing what is on each exam. As well, you will see a Preparation options section full of study resources for each exam.
70-410 Installing and Configuring Windows Server 2012
    70-411 Administering Windows Server 2012
70-412 Configuring Advanced Windows Server 2012 Services
    Preparation Materials
Unfortunately, Microsoft has recently updated the content for these three (3) exams for
Windows Server 2012 R2. These new exams will officially be released on January 28th, 2014 (nine (9) days away). Because of that, all of the previously released study materials (books, exams, etc.) for 70-410, 70-411, and 70-412
will only be partially helpful in getting you ready for the exams.
However, Microsoft Press and O'Reilly Media are currently updating their books to include the new
R2 content and will be releasing them in February, March, and April of this year. The previous releases of their books seem to get the best reviews on Amazon for helping students prepare. Here are the books, with links on Amazon and
O'Reilly. As time goes by, books from other publishers will also be released.
    Amazon:
    http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=%22Windows%20server%202012%20r2%22%20exam
    O'Reilly Media:
    http://search.oreilly.com/?q=%22Server+2012+R2%22+exam&x=9&y=15
By the way, I tend to believe the O'Reilly's release dates are more accurate since they are the folks who are actually releasing the books!
WARNING: As of today (01/19/2014), I don't believe any of the three legitimate Practice Test Providers (Transcender, SelfTest, and MeasureUp) have updated their practice exams for Windows Server 2012 R2 - yet. If I am wrong, I hope someone
    will correct me.
Focus all your studies on Windows Server 2012 R2 and should be ready to take on an exam. Always prepare for one exam at a time and then take it.
Also, make sure you take advantage of Microsoft's free Second Shot voucher program, which allows you to retake an exam for free in case you fail it the first time. This program will retire in May.
    http://www.microsoft.com/learning/en-us/second-shot.aspx
    Good luck!

  • Best book for CS3?

    Dear Forum Members,
Having just acquired premiere cs3 and not having used premiere previously, I am in need of a book to consult at this stage of the learning curve. As premiere cs3 is a new product, it doesn't have any commercially available books for the user yet, aside from a manual and a classroom guide which adobe has for sale. Should I buy the best/most popular guide for premiere pro 2 or should I just buy what adobe is offering? If premiere pro 2 is not that different from cs3, maybe one of the premiere pro 2 books will do.
    Thanks,
