Best codec to use for Motion 4?

I have a prosumer-level AVCHD camcorder (Panasonic HDC-TM700) and am working with Final Cut Studio. After doing a great deal of research it appears that there is NO real benefit to using any codec other than ProRes 422 for straight editing (a camera at this price point doesn't shoot images of a high enough quality to warrant using 422 HQ, which also requires more processor power, and not only does 4444 require rendering it also takes up a ton of space). However, I have read (many times) that there may be some benefit to using 422 HQ if I am doing motion graphics work (ala Motion 4). Can anyone verify this? Would it make any discernible difference when shooting with a camera like this? Even though it is a prosumer camcorder I am trying to squeeze as much value as I can out of the entire production.
Any input or advice?
Thanks!

I recently started a thread with a similar concern but I was comparing 422 to 422LT.
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2750971&start=0&tstart=0
My cameras are in the same category as yours - After using regular 422 with great results I'm presently working on my first project using 422LT. The seduction of using 30% less disc space was too difficult to resist.
If I see something that catches my eye I may go back and do more focused comparison tests.
I never do motion graphics etc. so I've never felt the need to explore HQ.
While there is clearly a difference in the various Prores versions which is evident by their respective file size and there is no discernible difference in quality when comparing the first generation transfers as StudioX has pointed out, I think it's fair for editors to be curious about what parameters actually quantify the difference between these codecs.
There doesn't seem to be any concrete information offered by Apple other than the vague scenarios described in the ProRes White Paper.
My guess is that the heavier versions probably hold up better under significant processing.
For example if you're doing ENG type work and you just need to shoot and cut then 422LT is obviously the choice for you. But if you do any sort of creative manipulation to your footage the jury is still out - at least for me.
Another scenario that's worth exploring is capturing your AVCHD footage as LT and then rendering and exporting as 422 or HQ. That way your saving tons of disc space on your initial transfer and backing up will be more manageable since you don't need to back up the larger render files.
As far as camera classification is concerned I think we're headed into a completely new paradigm. While my camera has a very small CMOS chip and limited manual control it does have an astonishing microprocessor and the combo optical / digital image stabilization is nothing short of amazing.
If you combine the current level of on-board processing power with a large modern sensor (I hope they work out rolling shutter and other CMOS anomalies) you'll have a camera that rivals even the best cameras of previous generations and will change the way people think about shooting as much as APPLE changed the way people think about editing video.
Please report back anything that you learn about the prores versions. I'd be curious to learn more about the info you read RE proresHQ.
Best,
g

  • Best codec to use for NTSC

I have a 5 minute project that has been in and out of color as well as after effects and was wondering what codec setting would be the best to use for DVD. I'm only putting it through iDVD, just wanted to make sure that whatever I use doesn't take away from the quality, etc...
would it be fine just to use a straight export to a Quicktime movie using the project settings?
    thanks everyone.

would it be fine just to use a straight export to a Quicktime movie using the project settings?
    Yes. Do this.
DVD video always uses MPEG 2 video files as it's basis and iDVD does the encoding internally for you anyway. It is aimed at consumer users and intended to be foolproof.
Once you make the step up to DVD Studio Pro, then you will have to pay attention to the format. But there are DVD presets in Compressor that make it a relatively simple and painless procedure.

  • Best codec to use for DVD

I'd like to output my animation from motion to a standard definition DVD. What and how should I export it so it retains how it looks in Motion when editing? Is there anything else I can use besides DV codec?

I'm definitely no expert, but I've started using the Apple ProRes 422 codec or Apple intermediate codec and the quality of the graphics looks nice and smooth. I have no idea what Apple ProRes is? Also click on Edit/Project properties then under the field order try lower first (even). Again I don't know what it means and hope I haven't given the wrong advise for you, but...it looks good!
I usually export different codecs for one project and write down which ones look good. Probably not the smartest way as it can take a while, but trial and error can teach you a lot of things.
I export into FCP then DVDSP sometimes with the same settings.
    Good luck!!

  • What is the best codec to use when importing video into Premiere?

I have recently aquired Premiere cs6 and want to use the best possible format to edit with. I am going to use footage that I film with a DSLR (5D mark III) so I know the codec will be H.264. My question is: Is H.264 the best codec to use? Or, is there a better codec that Premiere likes to use?
    Thanks!

  • What is the best software to use for screen capture on a PC for use with FCPX?

What is the best software to use for screen capture on a PC (windows 7) for use with FCPX? I've tried Camtasia and camstudio however the avi files cannot be imported by FCPX and the mov files produced by these programs are shown as just black screens in FCPX.

I use to face this issue every now and then (as a freelancer) when I use to cut on FCP7.
if the material is DV and was captured using Sony VEGAS, Premiere or Edius, the footage generally worked fine. You'll find most people will tell you to convert it regardless, however I found no issues working with them.
A problem you'll definitely face is HDV material. Most PC editing software write HDV in their own codec, which can't be read in FCP.
The only thing I can think of is to try converting HDV meaterial to QuickTime using something like MPEG Streamclip, or something similar.
    Good luck

  • Elements 7 - Best Preset to use for the Panasonic SDR-H40 Camcorder

    Hi,
Can anyone tell me what would be the best preset to use for video created on the Panasonic SDR-H40? I'm just learning about the software, opened a project, using whatever settings were already there, and the video's audio sometimes stops mid-stream, so it's basically a silent movie.
I read that I might need to use a specific preset or create one of my own, but don't know how to actually go about it.
The choices under NTSC presets are AVCHD, DV or HDV. I've looked in the Camcorders manual and can't find how (or even if) that equates to the recording modes of XP (high picture quality), SP (normal) or LP (recording time prioritized) -
The videos I recorded were recorded in XP - Taking a guess at it, I don't think there's a relationship between these terms and the recording modes of the Camcorder and suspect that this camera only does DV. But if that's true I don't know if there are further adjustments I need to make (by creating a preset).
I was hoping that someone with the same camera or just solid general knowledge could shed some light on this.
    Thanks!

The camcorder is a standard definintion camorder recording to a hard drive so you need to use the.... NTSC, "Hard disc, Flash Memory Camcorder", Standard 28KHz or Widescreen 48KHz dependant on whether you shot in widescreen.

  • What's the best flash to use for nighttime sports games?

What's the best flash to use for nighttime sporting events? I have a rebel XT and I'm pushing it to its limits trying to stop the action. I've tried a speedlite 430 but it didn't have a hook up for an external battery pack and I was told I'd need the extra power. Just tried the 580ex ll on Friday but at the 1/1 setting, it didn't flash for each frame in a burst, even with the external power. I should have backed it down to 1/4 but didn't know at the time. Any thought on a really good flash for night sports? Is the 580 a good choice?

JUst as Tim_S said. YOu will want a external battery pack. Unforatannly the 430 does not have the option to plug in a external battery pack so will want to pick up a 580 or one of the new 600 series.
Then you start looking at the battery packs. I recommend Quantum power packs

  • Best program to use for the Website?

I am interested in redesigning the home page of site:  https://www.txid.org    what would be the best program to use for the design?

    Kim,
You should use design tools you're most comfortable with.  Before engaging on design, you need to find out more on technology running the site being redesigned and see if there are existing design and HTML templates for that technology.  If there are and you can minimally brand existing templates to quickly have professionally looking site, that would be the best way forward.  Do not start with design only to figure out later that it be cost-prohibitive to execute, work your way from the ground up - server/site technology, existing HTML/WordPress/Drupal (etc) templates for that technology, branding options for those templates.

What is the best browser to use for facebook?

Any browser is supposed to work, provided the rest of the infrastructure (Flash, Java) is up to date.
However, since FB is so prone to install/modify/alter its settings/cookies/environment, I prefer to keep mine sandboxed and access it only via a dedicated browser used for nothing else, thus minimizing the risk and exposure.  For that, I use the Flock browser, purportedly optimized for social media: http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/19719/flock

  • What is the best editor to use for JSP/Servlet?

    Hello,
What is the best editor to use for JSP/Servlet database development.
I'm looking at Dreamweaver,Java Studio Creator.
I want some thing fairly easy to use that has database helper wizards like dreamweaver.
    Thanks for the help.
    Frank

Is it better to have a servlet do the database work and call it from JSP?No, it's better to have persistence objects do the database work. Servlets handle HTTP requests, and JSPs are HTML factories that should be pure view.
But there are lots of ways to do things. You just have to understand the tradeoffs when you decide.
I do not want to hammer out code, I want to learn the
best way to do things from experienced developers. Sorry, sounded like you just wanted to churn stuff.
"best way" can be subjective. In one app, "best" might be "delivered fastest". For another, "best" might be "most secure" or "most easily modified" or "best performing" or whatever. You won't get a "best" answer, only different choices. And they aren't always so easy to explain or execute.
I'd recommend that you start by reading about layered applications (3-tier architectures) and MVC separation. Once you've Googled enough about that, look into a framework like Struts or Spring or WebWork. That'll help you figure out where to put each responsibility in your app.
I can use dreamweaver to create web apps, but I hate
the arrays used to define fields. It also seems not
to take advantage of connection pooling.Don't know what you're talking about here, Frank. What do fields have to do with connection pooling?

  • Codec to use for archiving PAL VHS source

I want to digitise a whole lot of PAL VHS home movie stuff. What do you think are the best settings to convert it to?

this is a straight forward call. with your source of VHS at 256 lines at best + either SP or worse LL
P recorded mode and as hasbeen already recommended to preserve and edit in an economically efficient way, I'd also recommend PAL DV.
at 720x576 resolution to map those 256 VHS scan lines at 4:2:0 At 25Mbs is way more headroo
thAn you u might use for this footage.
as an I-frame format u can get it it easier with standard or mainstreAm codecs.
moreover u can ingest the vhs via your encoding device (dv camera or dv encoding box) and catch it on mini-dv media as DV for later ingest to something like fcp.
u must consider the ramifications of maintaini g your family jewels to the charge of spinning disk storage at roughly 11.75GB/hour as well. it is wise to consider how much storage on disk you need for a small amount of 100 hours of DV with only one instance.
this capturing directly to disk may not be economical for you.
also the trAgedy of losing this stuff on disk should be of concern as well.
so a big box of mini-dv media for use as a stop gap for your act of reclamation and preservation is a good way to stArt I think. (this is what I did some 4 years back)
I ditched all my VHS, hi8, dv, hdv and other guages and maintain all my psersonal and commercial content on LTO4 ultrium data tape. this may be more than u want to do however the concern of the access (future) and longevity of your family jewels should factor in greatly in any workflow and archive u wanna do.
I expect like most of us you may have 100's of hours of stuff that probable run and gun and uneditted and you wanna pass this to your grand kids. if so due to the digital world of cmf (contemporary media formats) that are outdated or superceded each 2 years (LOL) consideration for migrating your daily jewels every 8 to 10 yearsneeds great attention
yep stick with dv pal for the present maybe avc-infra may be worth a look inthe future or my personal favourite lossless motion jpeg2000.
also consider use of h.264 proxies and some shot or scene logs and any metadata scheme for your stuff. u can use a simple numbers / excel spreadshheet to tie the footage essence and proxies (on disk)
I use a OSX based MAM caLled CATDV. worth a look.
done this a lot so pm if u need help
