Best DVD compression settings?

Hello,
I have several longer movies that I have made adding up to around 24 gb ( exported in quicktime using .264h). I plan on using DVD-9 dual layer discs so 8.5 gb. I have downloaded handbrake compressor and was wondering if the software is a waste of my time and I should get a different one? I also want to know the best settings I can have so that I dont run out of room on the DVD. Thank You!

sorry for sounding rude, but:
• file size doesn't matter
• export to h.264 is of no use, harms quality only
• Handbrake is of no use for creating disks (it's a ripper/converter, no creator)
export a 'master file' of your Project from FCPX, to avoid lossy&useless 'intermediates'; file-size is probably around 40GB/h - don't worry
what you need is an authoring tool - which converts (final codec is mp2), resizes (final res is 720x480) and 'muxx' your video, finally creates the standard-compliant file structure ( _ts/vob etc), and disk-format (udf) for  videoDVD.
Use Toast or iDVD. Very convenient tools. Stay under 1h content for max. quality on SL-DVDr; using DL-DVDr for projects <2h is of no use.-
In case, you own legacy FC/pro, use DVDSP (very little convenient, esp. compared to Toast/iDVD, but tons of additinal options, e.g. menu desing/features).

They are sounding really quiet compared to the original waves...???
I can see that there are some dolalogue/audio compression settings and something set to -21db.....
How can I make them louder...and if I do will it mess up playing on normal DVD's ....
I know there are some DOLBY compresor settings in mac DVD player that make the sound pump if switched on...
Any thoughts or help would be appreciated???

    Hi
You must change some settings in the standard Dolby presets to keep the original level and mix:
    - Dialog Normalization: -31
    - Compression preset: none
This way your AC3 files will keep the level and mix from your original files.
    Hope that helps !

  • Best AVI compression settings

    Hi everybody.
I need to prepare avi files for a video catalogue, and I've compressed them using DV PAL.
Yet I'm not satisfied with the result. I tried the 'no compression' option and, though the video quality is good, the resulting file is way too "huge" to fit in a cd.
Thank u in advance for any suggestion

    Why CD? Why not DVD?
DVD will allow you play mpeg2 files on a set-up player or from most computer DVD players.
CDs can't be played, the files have to be moved to the hard drive first. Even Video CDs (VCD) is a BAD way to go.
    Cheers

  • "Best" export compression settings?

I have a 3.5 minute project that was shot in XD Cam EX 1920 x 1080 30p and I would like to be able to send a finished movie via e-mail to numerous prospects (it's a marketing piece for my video production services). Therefore I have quite a challenge: I want it to look really good but I'd also like it to be smaller than 10 GB so that it is e-mailable, and be delivered in a PC friendly version...any suggestions?

I know what you're going for and it's a valiant concept. But it's just not going to be successful for you. Yes you're adding more clicks for your viewers. One more click. Now you're up to 2! (One to launch the page, one to say "Go") It's not going to be a deal breaker.
And consider this: IF you were somehow able to embed the final movie in an email and have them only commit to a single click you're likely going to have issues on the viewing end still. People don't also know enough to "extract" the movie from their mail to somewhere, like their desktop, and play it from there. What I'm getting at is: expecting everyone's e-mail client to playback the movie is simply asking for problems. (I've had many issues with e-mailed movies until I coax the recipient to get the file OUT of the e-mail first. Then things are typically OK.) So this e-mailing concept may be 1 step forward: 1 click to initiate. And 2 steps back: your HIGHLY compressed movie stutters and bogs inside somebody's version of Outlook (or whatever they're using.)
Not to mention you're not really giving your work a fair shake if you crush it down so heavily that 3.5 minutes is less than 10MB. For your own sake I'd think you'd want to retain as much quality as possible along the way. I'd post to YouTube, Vimeo, Blip, Exposure room. See who has the best image quality with your material. Embed these movies in your own webpage/site (or not) and send the links out.
    Just my 2¢.

  • What are the best DVD ripping settings to avoid a choppy QT performance?

I ripped some of my DVDs with Handbreak, and I put them on my PB 12" running 10.4.5 and Quicktime 7.0.4. The performance is really bad with H264 code, and acceptable with standard mpeg4 codec (I occasionally get some stuttering). Which of the following parameters (beside the codec) can improve the QT performance on slower computers?
    1) The size of the final QT file (will a 1GB QT file stutter more, compared to a 600MB file?)
    2) The 1-pass or 2-pass option (so far I've been using only the 2-pass option)
    3) The bitrate (will a 1000kbps get less chances to stutter than a 2000kbps)?
    Thanks!
    Powerbook g4 12   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

If you're using any "ripping" software to convert DVD's to QuickTime formats you are at the mercy of the encoding (and the software that creates it).
If your Mac has trouble with the file your only options are to reduce the data rate or the movie dimensions.
I've done a few tests (using H.264) that yield satisfactory results on my Mac mini.
I edit the display dimensions (prior to export) to half size (640X480 becomes 320X240) and use the H.264 video codec (my Mac Mini can handle it) and then use QT Pro to display the file at double size (back to 640X480).
Quality does suffer but playback works even on my old G3 iMac.

  • What are best Mpeg encoder settings for making DVDs?

In switching from PP1.5 to CS3 the procedure is different for making DVDs and we have to encode mpeg files that later get picked up by Encore DVD build proces. What are the best mpeg encode settings for making the DVDs?
    Thanks,
    Chuck Taylor

    Question:
If you are doing a video that is small enough that you are not worried about size, what is the absolute best quality encoder settings? Would a Continous Bitrate result in a higher quality file generally? VBR is for trying to make a smaller file I assume.
I'm frustrated with even white letters on black titles that have some flicker. I just don't seem to get the smooth quality I desire.
Should I look at a different encoder?
If you output PP3 to an AVI and then import it into encore, isn't there a reduction of Q. due to the save to the AVI file?
    thanks.

What are the best imovie, mpeg4 settings for making dvds?

    • iMovie'08 to 11
    - Share to Media Browser - AND as Large (or Medium) - HD or other resolutions degrades the final result
iMovie'08 to 11 are not the tools of choise if quality is important as they all degrade the picture by discarding every second line when going from, Event's to Project's and this can not be mended.
iMovie HD6 and FinalCut delivers 100% of what any DVD-Authoring program needs.
    • DVD is as standard MAX - intrelaced SD-Video - and can not be any better than this
    • iDVD does only care about TIME / Duration as
iDVD 08, 09 & 11 has three levels of qualities. (version 7.0.1, 7,0.4 & 7.1.1) and iDVD 6 has the two last ones
    • Professional Quality
(movies + menus up to 120 min.) - BEST (but not always for short movies e.g. up to 45 minutes in total)
    • Best Performances
(movies + menus less than 60 min.) - High quality on final DVD (Can be best for short movies)
    • High Quality (in iDVD08 or 09) / Best Quality (in iDVD6)
(movies + menus up to 120 min.) - slightly lower quality than above
Menu can take 15 minutes or even more - I use a very simple one with no audio or animation like ”Brushed Metal” in old Themes.
    About double on DL DVDs.
    • iDVD Does Region = Zero (to be played everywhere)
    • Frame rate - DVD can be in two types PAL (25fps) and NTSC (29.97fps)
If Your material is 30fps then keep to NTSC (29.97fps), if 25fps keep to PAL.
One can feed iDVD the other frame rate - BUT RESULTING DVD WILL BE BAD
I use JES_Deinterlacer (free on Internet) to convert all material to the same and final frame rate
    • NTSC - US etc
    • PAL - EU etc

  • Best Compression Settings for Internet - jagged lines

    Hi all,
interested in seeing what people think the best compression settings are from FCE HD to Quicktime. I have a 2 minute video to compress which needs to go on the web. Attempts so far have resulted in jagged edges/lines on any footage which is moving. Locked off shots look great though. I'm trying to keep file size to under 10MB which shouldn't be a problem.
Any help or advice will be greatly appreciated.

  • Best QuickTime Audio/Video Compression Settings?

    Hello there,
Before inserting an iMovie to an iDVD project, I must compress it in QuickTime as it won't fit if "shared" as full-quality.
What Audio and Video compression settings will provide, preserve, or enhance the audio/video content? I have the latest version of QuickTime Pro and am pretty savy with it.

  • SD DVD Compressions

I have been compressing for like the last six months with Compressor, Compressor 2 and Bit Vice and for the life of me can't get anything that holds up quality wise. The cow has been great in solving problems in the past and have helped to an extent but I have still not burned a DVD that holds up yet. So I figured I'd try this. I am not trying to become a compression master...I am happy just being an editor that understands compression. I'd just like to create a simplistic workflow that allows me to produce nice looking DVD's and not ones that don't look much better than VHS. So here is a common scenario for me. I would like to know the best workflow to create the HIGHEST quality MPEG2 that I can to playback on a DVD. I don't care about file size or length of the compression. I'll be indebted to anyone that can help me work this out.
Current workflow-HDV sequence with HDV captured 1440X1080 ftg mixed in with computer 3D graphics of Animation(1980X1020), Photo-JPEG(1920X1080) and HDV(1440X1080) codecs.
My other 2 most common sequences that my workflow begins in are Blackmagic NTSC-Jpeg(Photo-Jpeg) & DV NTSC. I don't know if you would recommend a different process for these 2 but if so then I would be indebted to know these answers as well. I would hope that the compression would be pretty much the same in these based on what quality level you want.
Here's an example of my how I go and still get bad results. I finish my FCP (HDV, Blackmagic NTSC-Jpeg and DV NTSC)Sequence and then export to Compressor 2. The only thing that ever changes is when I work in an HDV sequence it will not let me export directly from the sequence claiming that I have not selected any media. So I have to take the extra step of exporting as a quicktime movie reference file to bring into compressor 2. I will then select Best Quality 90 minute 4:3 or 16:9 depending on the aspect ratio I need. I then have been assuming that for the highest quality I have been selecting GOP-IP and I have tried both 2-PASS VBR and Constant Bit Rates of anywhere from 7.0 to 8.0 with not much difference in results. I have tried all the GOP settings as well.
FYI - I've have tried dumping out my HDV sequence out to the deck and bringing it back in as a DV clip. I would then compress the 720X480 DV clip without any better results. The best results that I have come to find in all of my testing is bumping the HDV sequence up to uncompressed 8-bit or animation, rendering and then going through compressor or bitvice. BitVice gives me a little better results but nothing to write home about. I'm not opposed to using BitVice but would prefer to stay within the Apple workflow and just export through Compressor unless BitVice is the answer.
I have researched all of the forums and sites to I'm about blue in the face and have tried various things that have helped from many of the members. So thanks to everyone that has helped me or someone else that I have been able to take there suggestion for myself. I am just looking to get over that last hump!
It is not like it is unviewable but that I would like for it to look as good as it does in the sequence in FCP or at least 80-90% close. Right now to us it looks like it takes such a hit that it is like 60% is good as it was in the FCP sequence and only like 10% better than vhs if that:( Is there some hidden secret that I am missing in software compression that could get me over that remaining hump or am I stuck viewing similiar quality to vhs?
Sorry for the long post. Thanks in advance for everything!

Hey Lee, looking at what you are doing and how you are doing, let me make some recommendations.
obviously you are able to capture an 8 and 10-bit uncompressed 4:2:2 YUV NTSC and PAL elements from your internal drive with no problems (since you mentioned Blackmagic's Decklinck card). but you said that you are working with HD material, so assume you have some faster external drives. anyway, bring in the material in the highest quality you can in the above choices the 10-bit would be ideal.
what are your source tapes? i ask this bcz if they are some form of DV format (HDCAM, HDCAM PRO) your material is already compressed 5:1 (not helpful).
ok, you say that your FCP sequences are "Blackmagic NTSC-Jpeg(Photo-Jpeg) & DV NTSC".. WHY? although the file sizes might be atractive, once again, you are implemnting a compression to those files (cascade compression). something in the ballpark of another 5:1 to 15:1.
when you export your sequence from FCP do it with NO compression or in the drop-down options box "compression type = NONE". yes the files will be MUCH larger, but your material will mostly still be in the realm of 5:1 rather than the 10:1 to 20:1 compression (starting to see, even BEFORE you start encoding your how much your RAW "uncompressed" material is compressed).
OK, now you have these HUGE files on your HDD, since you are working with HD and you want to ultimately have a SD DVD, you have do to a down-conversion of the material.
one of the options to do a donw-convert is compressor. (i wouldn't recoomend it though). i would highly recommend do the down-conversion within FCP so once you do your export, your files are in SD resolution already (more than likely DV NTSC 640x480).
anyway, let's say that you already have a SD resolution file, you take that file into compressor (most DVD compression introduces about 40:1 compression) and just select a preset (they are generally pretty good) and see what relults that gives you.
i see that you set your GOP to IP ? a big no no! i hate to feel like i am demeaning you but do you know what GOP means, does or how it works?
having a setting of IP not only gives you larger files, since more whole frame (I) are created, but there is nothing beneficial and the encoding process is SEVERLY hindered since the encoder is not being effectively used.
i would try a setting of a CLOSED GOP @ 15 with a setting of IBBP since this is the MOST effective use of encoding or bit-reduction.
i think i touched most subjects.. wow i am exhausted!
if you have any specific questions as to how or why, let me know and i will answer them as best as i can

  • PAL to NTSC DVD compression questions

    Ok,
I have recently finished a dvd in PAL format with about 4.5GB total video once compressed. Now I need to get this into an NTSC version. Is it possible to use Compressor 2 to convert the DVD compressed clips/audio [the ones ready for PAL DVD] into NTSC format ready to build my project in DVDSP? Or do I need my original quicktime clips in PAL format and change them to NTSC in Compressor 2 then make them into NTSC DVD ready clips? Also what is the best setting for NTSC DVD in compressor that will be ok for the size of my final version [4.5GB]. Sorry about these questions but I made the PAl version with compressor 1 and there was far less settings to worry about.
    powerbook 12   Mac OS X (10.2.x)

I'm pretty sure you need to go back to your Final Cut source material and re-export via Compressor by selecting 'advanced standards conversion' to get your NTSC files. Then you can import these into DVDSP as NTSC assets.

  • Copying DVD player settings to multiple users

    Hi Guys,
I have 20 iMacs that all need to have the same DVD player settings.
I have tried copying the com.apple.DVDPlayer.plist file to all of the user folders but it just doesn't want to play ball.
I basically want them all to be able to play Region 2 discs without having to set the region code every time.
    Any ideas?

Probably the best way to do this would be to modify the software to be deployed via Java Web Start and set the memory parameters in the JNLP file. This would centralize the parameters used to launch the application to the JNLP file on the server.
The second-best way would probably be to create a wrapper batch file which launches Java with the appropriate command-line arguments.
I think you can also do this by setting the environment variable JVM_ARGS to contain e.g. "-Xmx256m".

  • No Preview Box in "Standard Video Compression Settings"

    Hi:
I'm taking a class in Photoshop CS5.  Our textbook is Adobe Photoshop CS5 Classroom in A Book and we've reached Lesson 12 Working with 3D Images.  At the end of the chapter we made a 3 second Quicktime (H.264 Compression) movie.  According to the book, after choosing Quicktime Export in the Render Video diolog box, it should open a Movie Settings diolog box which, after choosing Videe Settings button, opens the Standard Video Compression Settings box.  In the lower right of that box there should be a Preview window showing the effect of the compression on a frame of the animation.  For me the preview window is blank even though I can compress the file. I've moved the animation's timeline current time indicator to the beginning, middle, and end of the animation but to no effect.
I'm rumming a Macbook 2 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo with 4 GB of SDRAM.  The computer does support OpenGL which appears to be chosen in the 3D section of Photoshop's preferences.
    Thanks for any suggestions.

Don't worry about file size at this point; the determining factor is program length. A single layer 4.7GB DVD will hold about two hours of video. The compression is handled in the DVD authoring application.
From FCE, just export to QuickTime Movie (do not use QT Conversion). If you'll burn the DVD on the same computer, make sure the "self-contained" box is unchecked for a much quicker export.

  • Timelapse Compression Settings FCE

I have RAW images and work on an Adobe Bridge/LR Timelapse/Adobe After Effects workflow.I've recently had the trouble with quality loss in FCE. I don't have FCP (so no ProRES compression). What sequence presets, compression settings should I use for a timelapse for online streaming?

for usage with iDVD, no 'Conversion' needed, the dvd-authoring app will convert anyhow. 'Export QT movie' should do it. too much 'intermediates' doesn't add any value in DVD-making.
'jumping' usually indicates a) too high burn speed, b) 'dirty' player- or burner-head, c) 'wrong' brand of dvd-r (Verbatim has an excellent track-record here), don't use no-names.
