I can think of a reason. We create very large forms and some of the defaults drive me crazy. Is there another way?
For example, by default forms adds 1 to the size of numeric fields. We almost never want that. So lets say there is a table
with hundreds of number(1) fields destined to be radio buttons most likely in the 1 -- 5 range. So we end up with a form
that has them all be number(2) and one has to change it. Is there another way to change default behavior? And is there a way
to set property defaults? For example suppose I want all items created be upper case and auto skip automatically. How to do it?
One could I think create the block and then convert to xml with frmf2xml, change it there, and then
frmxml2f back to an fmb. Could we not?
Bigger reasons would be to create forms. One could come up with a specification language and create the form in xml or parts of it.
for example this kind of specification can be used for radio buttons in application express, label semicolon returnvalue comma
STATIC2:Fully retired;1,Partially retired;2,Full-time;3,Not Employed;4,None;
(combined with the number_of_radio_columns [horizontal columns so could be 5 for horizontal or 1 for vertical in this case]
Then application express creates and lays them out for you. That is a super time saver. It is a lot of work to create these in forms,
especially because there is separate object for each one and ideally one wants them to be named appropriately too and likely
colored. For example a Null or None button that only exists to unset the button if it were set by accident needs to be colored
in such a way and/or offset so as to indicate it is not a real choice so to speak. For example if this was a paper form that had been
filled out there likely would not be a missing selection (but there could be e.g. don't know, n/a, do not want to answer... etc.)
If it never appeared on the original then it's important to not confuse data entry people with a choice that looks like the original
choices.
so imagine we could specify radio buttons and checkboxes ahead of time and have them be created automatically.
But I have not tried it...

" Why not Emacs Be the best editor for java"
hai friends,
iam using emacs editor for java. i think it is the best editor for java available
for free of cost.
we can easily customize it based on ur needs
we can even customize the compilation and run option with single key stroke.
and it has many interesting and useful features like shell, bsh, cvs customization,telnet
and a lot more....
many software concerns had made emacs as thier offical java editor
i donot think anybody in this world who had used the emacs will go for some other editor
and i do want to know from u all that whether i was wrong . and
is there any other editor which can be better than emacs
if so give me valid reasons
get back to me if u are not aware of emacs features
regards
g.kamalI agree with you 100% on linux side, but in
windows(tm) there are even better editors. I
personally use MED in windows. After trying dozens of
different editors in linux I ended up using emacs, it
sure is the best editor in linux (for Java atleast).
There are still some things bugging me, for an example
I would like the "end" button to move the cursor to
the end of the line instead of EOF.
I donot understand why ur saying that the "end" button is not moving the cursor to the
end of the line
it works fine in my machine
plz elaborate what more features u want, bcas it may be there in emacs , but u may not have that
much awareness in it.

Who knows what editors are best to create JSP in?
I usually use TextPad for java but it show JSP files in plain black. :( I have found that MS Frontpage is the only editor that shows JSP and HTML correctly. It puts everything in the directive tags in a marron color that makes it stand out from the HTML.
But is there another editor that is good for this?
Thanks,
BabarAllaire (now part of Macromedia) used to have a product called JRun Studio which was great for JSP's but I'm not sure if this is still available.
DreamWeaver is pretty nifty and one of the more cheaper options. Then again you could try any HTML editor with syntax highlighting!!
If you looking at syntax higlighting Java IDEs such as Forte4Java and JBuilder will offer this, however JBuilder is not cheap and will set you back. Forte is free for the community build but I've gone back to using text editors as many of these IDE's leave you with projects structured by their own standards (Ant and XDoclet are more flexible).
If your just after a cheap solution to syntax highlighting TextPad will let you set up your highlighting options. Code insight will cost you though.

Best Practices for Forms within Site Studio Templates
Last summer our university redesigned our entire website using site studio. We only use the content server for the SiteStudio add on. During the redesign, we found that it wasn't clear how we were supposed to migrate our current web forms (applications, payment forms, etc) to sitestudio. Our current workaround is to place the form within the content server, and have it submit data to a cgi (perl,php) placed on a separate web server. We wrap the backend of the form within an html template that looks like our sitestudio templates so that it appears to the end user that they are still on our website.
Obviously, this is not ideal. I have been reading documentation on how to use the content server to host JSP files. The jsp files run flawlessly if they are accessed via the weblayout folder directly. I have not yet found a solution that will allow me to wrap my jsp forms within our existing sitestudio templates.
Has anyone else encountered this problem, or come up with an alternate solution to this problem?Thanks, I appreciate your taking time to find the precise answer. Just today this bit me again.
I have a need to modify the ComboBox template to italicize placeholder text. That's a easy thing to do; however, now that I've created a new template I have to name it and add a Style={StaticResource MyNewStyle} to ALL the comboboxes in my app.
If I leave my new template unnamed - to override the default - none of the theme resource changes that I already have in place are picked up by the existing ComboBoxes, and they revert to their default look.
There's clearly something wrong in the way I'm doing it or the way it's implemented. -
Best solutions for forms outside of BC?
I see from another discussion someone recommends using sinfatic forms, but that's for PCs not macs.
What do people like to do if not hosting with BC?I usually use Jotform (www.jotform.com) for clients who own their own web hosting.
Jotform has a really nice "starter" tier that is 100% FREE and allows up to 100 submissions per month (ideal for very small clients).
With Jotform, I sign-up for a FREE account under my client's email address, create a password for them, and after I publish their site, I send them the information so that they can upgrade their account IF needed.
Another popular vendor is called Wufoo (http://www.wufoo.com/signup/) and it's the same 100 per month.
I'm sure that there are others, but these are the only two I know of.
Good luck Anita! -
Best practices for deploying forms in a 'cluster'?
Anyone know of any public docs that discuss typical best practices for
- forms deployment;
- forms apps management and version control; and/or
- deploying (and keeping) the .frm/frx in sync when using multiple forms servers in a HA or load balancing envrionment?Hi adil,
Based on your description, you want to know the best practices for search service in a SharePoint farm.
Different farms have different search topologies, for the best search performance, I recommend that you follow the guidance for small, medium, and large farms.
The article is about the guidance for different farms.
Search service can run with other services in the same server, if condition permits and you want to have better performance for search service and other services including BI performance, you can deploy search service in dedicated server.
If condition permits, I recommend combining a query component with a front-end Web server to avoid putting crawl components and query components on the same serve.
In your SharePoint farm, you can deploy the query components in a WFE server and the crawl components in an application server.
The articles below describe the best practices for enterprise search.

Best choice for a date column in forms
Hello,
I want to know what is the best choice for a date field that the user have to enter manually. I read on a other post that a calender control is not directly implemented in forms 9i. So what is the best choice to be "user friendly" with a date field in a form?
thanks in advance.Hi
Don't know if this would be much use to you, but I wrote this function 'Check_Date' a while back to check whether the user had typed something which could be interpreted as a date. You'd make your date field into a Text Item, and include a call to this function (which could be in your form, or in a library) in the WHEN-VALIDATE-ITEM trigger on the item, ie:
IF NOT check_date(:ITEMS.date_item1, NULL, NULL) THEN
RAISE FORM_TRIGGER_FAILURE;
END IF;This would mean that the user could type 'T' or '*' for today, '+1' for tomorrow, '-7' for one week ago, or the date in a variety of formats. When they leave the field, the function tries to resolve what they've typed into a date, and sets the field to a date in the correct format.
('Display_Alert' is just a function to display a named alert with a message.) It can also be used to check that the date entered doesn't fall outside upper and lower bounds. Code follows:
FUNCTION Check_Date (text_in IN OUT VARCHAR2,
lower_bound_in IN DATE,
upper_bound_in IN DATE)
RETURN BOOLEAN IS
first_letter VARCHAR2(1) := SUBSTR(text_in, 1, 1);
date_ok BOOLEAN;
this_date DATE;
date_diff NUMBER(8);
output_format VARCHAR2(12) := Get_Application_Property(BUILTIN_DATE_FORMAT);
TYPE date_format_table_type IS TABLE OF VARCHAR2(12)
INDEX BY BINARY_INTEGER;
date_format_table date_format_table_type;
BEGIN
--Set up table of date formats in order they'll be tested for
date_format_table(1) := 'DD-MON-RRRR';
date_format_table(2) := 'DD-MM-RRRR';
date_format_table(3) := 'DD-MM';
date_format_table(4) := 'DD-MON';
date_format_table(5) := 'YYYY-MM-DD';
date_format_table(6) := 'YYYY-MON-DD';
--Use of T, or * for today's date...
IF UPPER(text_in) IN ('T', '*') THEN
this_date := SYSDATE;
date_ok := TRUE;
--Look for use of +x/-x for number of days different from today
ELSIF first_letter IN ('+', '-') THEN
BEGIN
date_diff := TO_NUMBER(SUBSTR(text_in, 2));
IF first_letter = '+' THEN
this_date := SYSDATE + date_diff;
ELSE
this_date := SYSDATE - date_diff;
END IF;
date_ok := TRUE;
EXCEPTION
WHEN VALUE_ERROR THEN
--User has entered something like '+X', so not valid
date_ok := FALSE;
END;
ELSE
--Go through all the possible formats for date entry,
--if any give a valid date, then return that.
FOR ix IN date_format_table.FIRST..date_format_table.LAST LOOP
EXIT WHEN date_ok;
BEGIN
--Try creating a date using the format masks in the local
--table. If no good, this will throw an INVALID_DATE exception
this_date := TO_DATE(text_in, date_format_table(ix));
date_ok := TRUE;
EXCEPTION
WHEN OTHERS THEN
date_ok := FALSE;
END;
END LOOP;
END IF;
IF date_ok THEN
--Check for violation of lower/upper bounds on date
IF (lower_bound_in IS NOT NULL AND this_date < lower_bound_in) THEN
Display_Alert('info_alert', 'Date cannot be before '||TO_CHAR(lower_bound_in, output_format));
date_ok := FALSE;
ELSIF (upper_bound_in IS NOT NULL AND this_date > upper_bound_in) THEN
Display_Alert('info_alert', 'Date cannot be after '||TO_CHAR(upper_bound_in, output_format));
date_ok := FALSE;
ELSE
text_in := TO_CHAR(this_date, output_format);
END IF;
ELSE
Display_Alert('INFO_ALERT', text_in||' is not a valid date !!');
END IF;
RETURN date_ok;
END;Hope this is useful.

Best Practice for PDF print forms based on SAP standard
Hi,
I have copied the SAP standard PDF form F_D_INT_SCALE_00 to a Z form, and am using it in conjunction with the standard print program RFDZIS01_PDF. However I need to output some additional fields that are not supplied by the print program / interface (for example Customer VAT number).
What is the best practice for achieving this? As far as I can see the only way is to take a copy of the standard print program and modify it to select the extra data, and modify the interface. I never like taking copies of standard programs though for obvious reasons.
If I had this requirement with a smartform it would be a simple case of embedding ABAP code into the Z smartform and leaving the print program alone, but unfortunately there is no provision for the non-PDF version of the Interest Letter to be sent by email.
Thanks in advance,
VindalooThanks for your reply Robert.
However I think you are referring to Smartforms when you mention Code Initialization and Global Data declarations. I need to know the best way to modify copies of standard Adobe Print Forms.

Best Practices for BI, ADF and Oracle Forms installations on Weblogic
Hi, I'm researching options on upgrading to Oracle 11g Middleware. My company currently has Oracle Forms 10g running on Oracle Application Server.
We are interested in using Oracle Forms 11g, ADF and Jdeveloper, and Business Intelligence with Oracle's Weblogic 10.3.5.
Is there any whitepapers or documentation on best practices for installing alll of these components together?
For instance, can ADF ( with JSF 2.x ) be installed in the same domain as Oracle Forms 11g but use different managed servers?
Will Business Intelligence need to be in a seperate Oracle Home with it's own weblogic installation? I spend a lot of time trying to get the JSF upgraded to 2.x in the Business Intelligence installation and could not get it to work.
I know it's a pretty broad question but thank you for any direction on this.Thanx for the reply! I read through the documents and they are very good at explaining how to install the different components individually. I still can't find much on installing them together. I hope it's not just going to be a trial and error thing.
So far I've installed done the following successfully:
Installed 10.3.5 weblogic
Forms and Reports 11g on top of 10.3.5
I've created an additional managed server for our ADF applications.
My next step is upgrading the JSF to 2.x. I would have to stage patches 12917525 and 12979653. I'm afraid it will break the forms and reports though. Any ideas? -
What is the best Latex editor for Mac ? I'm looking for a suitable alternative to MacTex - either Commercial or freeware.
andy8,
there are quite a few “integrated” solutions, combining editor and pdf preview (the very fine TeXShop being one of them) -- some of them are quite new (even beta); TeXShop, on the other hand, is very mature:
TeXPad:
http://vallettaventures.com/texpad
Latexian:
http://tacosw.com/latexian/
TeXnicle:
http://www.bobsoft-mac.de/texnicle/texnicle.html
Scribo:
http://www.scriboapp.com/
Texmaker (cross-platform, qt-based; all the others are OS X native):
http://www.xm1math.net/texmaker/index.html
You can also check the entries, and the comments, on Macupdate:
http://www.macupdate.com/find/mac/latex
That said, I use none of them, although I have TeXShop around. (This doesn’t mean the new integrated solutions aren’t any good; I haven’t tried them yet.)
That’s because what’s most important, imho, in a good LaTeX environment is the editor, i.e., how much help is there to get the source written. Accordingly, many people would agree that the best editor available plus a fine synchronised, but stand-alone pdf viewer is superior than a (compromising, or so the musing goes) all-in-one tool.
The, hands-down, best pdf viewer, supporting PDFSync (syncing source and pdf), is Skim; it’s free:
http://skim-app.sourceforge.net/
As regards the best editor, there is constant disagreement among OS X users, some would even say “war” -- but that just shows how vivid the Mac ecosphere is when it comes to such tools.
Leaving the “classics” aside, Emacs (Aquamacs, http://aquamacs.org/) and Vim (Macvim, http://code.google.com/p/macvim/), dreaded for their learning curve, worshipped for their power, two of the best, modern, clean, yet powerful editors are TextMate and Sublime Text 2:
http://macromates.com/
helpful: http://www.astrobetter.com/how-and-why-to-use-textmate-for-latex/
http://www.sublimetext.com/2
helpful: http://tekonomist.wordpress.com/2011/03/25/the-in-progress-latex-plugin-for-subl ime-text-2-4/
Many would hold that the combination of either TextMate (2) or Sublime Text 2 together with Skim provides the best LaTeX environment ever.
Take care. -
Multipage forms- best workflow for future editing
I'm struggling with understanding the proper workflow for creating and editing multipage forms. I need to create a medical history form (PDF) where patients can enter their medical history and patient info.
This form is usually 6+ pages. Each page has a header (logo and office address) and a footer (page number).
The problem I'm running into is when we need to make a change like add a question or change the wording of a question. Is there a way we can edit the form (either in Word or an Adobe product) and not have to recreate the form in Acrobat Pro?
I've hired contract workers from Odesk and each one I've hiried claims they can edit the questions after the form is created. But each time this happens, the form looks worse after each edit. I'm pretty sure this is the problem because they are editing the text in Acrobat Pro, which has very limited text editing capabilites.
I'm wasting so much time going back and forth with contractors explaining to them that the text format looks like crap.
I'm very capable of designing and editing these forms myself, but I just don't have the time. So I'm contracting this work out.
I'd greatly appreciate any advice on the best workflow for PDF forms.
Thanks!Yes, there is a way. You need to edit the original file format (Word, in
this case), and then create a new PDF.
You then open the old version (that has the form fields in it), and use the
Replace Pages command to replace the old pages with the ones from the new
file. This will maintain the form fields in place, although you might need
to rename them and align them with the new page contents.
This is a much better approach than trying to edit the PDF directly
(although this option has been greatly improved in Acrobat XI). -

What is the best editor to use for JSP/Servlet?
Hello,
What is the best editor to use for JSP/Servlet database development.
I'm looking at Dreamweaver,Java Studio Creator.
I want some thing fairly easy to use that has database helper wizards like dreamweaver.
Thanks for the help.
FrankIs it better to have a servlet do the database work and call it from JSP?No, it's better to have persistence objects do the database work. Servlets handle HTTP requests, and JSPs are HTML factories that should be pure view.
But there are lots of ways to do things. You just have to understand the tradeoffs when you decide.
I do not want to hammer out code, I want to learn the
best way to do things from experienced developers. Sorry, sounded like you just wanted to churn stuff.
"best way" can be subjective. In one app, "best" might be "delivered fastest". For another, "best" might be "most secure" or "most easily modified" or "best performing" or whatever. You won't get a "best" answer, only different choices. And they aren't always so easy to explain or execute.
I'd recommend that you start by reading about layered applications (3-tier architectures) and MVC separation. Once you've Googled enough about that, look into a framework like Struts or Spring or WebWork. That'll help you figure out where to put each responsibility in your app.
I can use dreamweaver to create web apps, but I hate
the arrays used to define fields. It also seems not
to take advantage of connection pooling.Don't know what you're talking about here, Frank. What do fields have to do with connection pooling?
