Best practices for large ADF projects?

I've heard mention (for example, ADF Large Projects of documentation about dealing with large ADF projects. Where exactly is this documentation? I'm interested in questions like whether Fusion web applications can have more than one ViewController project (different names, of course), more than one Model project, the best way to break up applications for ease of maintenance, etc. Thanks.
Mark

I'd like to mention something:
Better have unix machines for your development.
Have at least 3 GB of RAM on windows machines.
Create all your commonly used LOVs & VOs first.
If you use web services extensively, create it as a seperate app.
Make use of popups, it's very user friendly and fast too. You no need to deal with browser back button.
If you want to use common page template, create it at the beginning. It's very difficult if you want to apply it later after you developed pages.
Use declarative components for commonly used forms like address, etc.
Search the forum, you will see couple of good util classes.
When you check-in the code, watch out some of the files don't show up in JDev like connections.xml
Make use of this forum, you will get answers immediately from great experts.

  • Best practices for setting up projects

We recently adopted using Captivate for our WBT modules.
As a former Flash and Director user, I can say it’s
fast and does some great things. Doesn’t play so nice with
others on different occasions, but I’m learning. This forum
has been a great source for search and read on specific topics.
I’m trying to understand best practices for using this
product. We’ve had some problems with file size and
incorporating audio and video into our projects. Fortunately, the
forum has helped a lot with that. What I haven’t found a lot
of information on is good or better ways to set up individual
files, use multiple files and publish projects. We’ve decided
to go the route of putting standalones on our Intranet. My gut says
yuck, but for our situation I have yet to find a better way.
My question for discussion, then is: what are some best
practices for setting up individual files, using multiple files and
publishing projects? Any references or input on this would be
    appreciated.

    Hi,
Here are some of my suggestions:
    1) Set up a style guide for all your standard slides. Eg.
Title slide, Index slide, chapter slide, end slide, screen capture,
non-screen capture, quizzes etc. This makes life a lot easier.
    2) Create your own buttons and captions. The standard ones
are pretty ordinary, and it's hard to get a slick looking style
happening with the standard captions. They are pretty easy to
create (search for add print button to learn how to create
buttons). There should instructions on how to customise captions
somewhere on this forum. Customising means that you can also use
words, symbols, colours unique to your organisation.
    3) Google elearning providers. Most use captivate and will
allow you to open samples or temporarily view selected modules.
This will give you great insight on what not to do and some good
    ideas on what works well.
    4) Timings: Using the above research, I got others to
complete the sample modules to get a feel for timings. The results
were clear, 10 mins good, 15 mins okay, 20 mins kind of okay, 30
mins bad, bad, bad. It's truly better to have a learner complete
2-3 short modules in 30 mins than one big monster. The other
benefit is that shorter files equal smaller size.
    5) Narration: It's best to narrate each slide individually
(particularly for screen capture slides). You are more likely to
get it right on the first take, it's easier to edit and you don't
have to re-record the whole thing if you need to update it in
future. To get a slicker effect, use at least two voices: one male,
one female and use slightly different accents.
    6) Screen capture slides: If you are recording filling out
long window based databse pages where the compulsory fields are
marked (eg. with a red asterisk) - you don't need to show how to
fill out every field. It's much easier for the learner (and you) to
show how to fill out the first few fields, then fade the screen
capture out, fade the end of the form in with the instructions on
what to do next. This will reduce your file size. In one of my
forms, this meant the removal of about 18 slides!
    7) Auto captions: they are verbose (eg. 'Click on Print
Button' instead of 'Click Print'; 'Select the Print Preview item'
instead of 'Select Print Preview'). You have to edit them.
    8) PC training syntax: Buttons and hyperlinks should normally
be 'click'; selections from drop down boxes or file lists are
normally 'select': Captivate sometimes mixes them up. Instructions
should always be written in the correct order: eg. Good: Click
'File', Select 'Print Preview'; Bad: Select 'Print Preview' from
the 'File Menu'. Button names, hyperlinks, selections are normally
    written in bold
    9) Instruction syntax: should always be written in an active
voice: eg. 'Click Options to open the printer menu' instead of
'When the Options button is clicked on, the printer menu will open'
    10) Break all modules into chapters. Frame each chapter with
a chapter slide. It's also a good idea to show the Index page
before each chapter slide with a progress indicator (I use an
animated arrow to flash next to the name of the next chapter), I
use a start button rather a 'next' button for the start of each
chapter. You should always have a module overview with the purpose
of the course and a summary slide which states what was covered and
    they have complete the module.
    11) Put a transparent click button somewhere on each slide.
Set the properties of the click box to take the learner back to the
start of the current chapter by pressing F2. This allows them to
jump back to the start of their chapter at any time. You can also
do a similar thing on the index pages which jumps them to another
    chapter.
    12) Recording video capture: best to do it at normal speed
and be concious of where your mouse is. Minimise your clicks. Most
people (until they start working with captivate) are sloppy with
their mouse and you end up with lots of unnecessarily slides that
you have to delete out. The speed will default to how you recorded
it and this will reduce the amount of time you spend on changing
    timings.
    13) Captions: My rule of thumb is minimum of 4 seconds - and
longer depending on the amount of words. Eg. Click 'Print Preview'
is 4 seconds, a paragraph is longer. If you creating knowledge
based modules, make the timing long (eg. 2-3 minutes) and put in a
next button so that the learner can click when they are ready.
Also, narration means the slides will normally be slightly longer.
    14) Be creative: Capitvate is desk bound. There are some
learners that just don't respond no matter how interactive
Captivate can be. Incorporate non-captivate and desk free
activities. Eg. As part of our OHS module, there is an activity
where the learner has to print off the floor plan, and then wander
    around the floor marking on th emap key items such as: fire exits;
first aid kit, broom and mop cupboard, stationary cupboard, etc.
    Good luck!

  • Best practice for mouseless ADF applications

I am developing an ADF application where the users do not want to use the mouse.
So I would like to know if there are a best practice for this?
I am already using the accessKey functionality and subforms defaultCommand
But I have had problems setting focus to objects on a page like tables. I would like a button to return the focus to the table after it has made the command like delete.
I have implemented a solution where I have found inspiration several threads and other webpages (see below).
    Is this solution okay?
Are there any problems with it?
I would also like to know if there are better pathways to go like
    out of the box solutions,

    Hi,
I am developing an ADF application where the users do not want to use the mouse. So I would like to know if there are a best practice for this?
Well HTML (and this is the user interface you see) follows a tab index navigation that you follow with "tab" and "shift+tab". Anything else is a short cut for which you use mnemonics (as you already do) or shortcuts (explained in http://one-size-doesnt-fit-all.blogspot.dk/2010/11/adf-ui-shell-supporting-global-hotkeys.html). There is a distinction to make between non-web environments (which I think you and your users have abackground in) and client desktop environments. Browsers block some keyboard functionality for their own purpose. So you may have to find a list of keys first that work across browsers. Unlike desktop clients, which allow you to "press a button" without the button to take focus, this cannot be done on the web. So you need to be clever here, avoiding buttons at all.
The following paper is about JavaScript in ADF and explains the basics for what Chris Muir explains in : http://one-size-doesnt-fit-all.blogspot.dk/2010/11/adf-ui-shell-supporting-global-hotkeys.html
    http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/developer-tools/jdev/1-2011-javascript-302460.pdf
It has the outline for how to register short cut keys that perform a specific action (e.g. register ctrl+d to delete the current row you are on, or press F11 to execute a query (similar to Oracle Forms frmres files)). However, be aware that this includes some code you have to write (actually quite some code to be honest).
http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/developer-tools/adf/learnmore/79-global-template-button-strategy-360139.pdf (are there an example implementation?), or
    http://one-size-doesnt-fit-all.blogspot.dk/2010/11/adf-ui-shell-supporting-global-hotkeys.html
Actually these are implementations as they come with example code for you to use and customize, do they? So what is this question asking for more ? Also note that global buttons don't quite have anything in common with the question you asked. I assume you want to see it as an implementation of the Forms toolbar that operates on the form or table the focus is in. This however does not work for the web as there is nothing that keeps track of which component has a focus and to what iterator (data block) it belongs. This would involve even more coding (though possibly doable)

  • Validation Best Practice for an javafx project

    Hello,
I am investigating how to validate a JavaFX project and specifically where to display the validation results with appropriate icons and text. Do you have any thoughts on best practice for this? Are there any features in JavaFX to do this? Are there any third-party library that does this?

  • Best Practices for BI, ADF and Oracle Forms installations on Weblogic

Hi, I'm researching options on upgrading to Oracle 11g Middleware. My company currently has Oracle Forms 10g running on Oracle Application Server.
We are interested in using Oracle Forms 11g, ADF and Jdeveloper, and Business Intelligence with Oracle's Weblogic 10.3.5.
Is there any whitepapers or documentation on best practices for installing alll of these components together?
For instance, can ADF ( with JSF 2.x ) be installed in the same domain as Oracle Forms 11g but use different managed servers?
Will Business Intelligence need to be in a seperate Oracle Home with it's own weblogic installation? I spend a lot of time trying to get the JSF upgraded to 2.x in the Business Intelligence installation and could not get it to work.
I know it's a pretty broad question but thank you for any direction on this.

Thanx for the reply! I read through the documents and they are very good at explaining how to install the different components individually. I still can't find much on installing them together. I hope it's not just going to be a trial and error thing.
So far I've installed done the following successfully:
    Installed 10.3.5 weblogic
Forms and Reports 11g on top of 10.3.5
I've created an additional managed server for our ADF applications.
My next step is upgrading the JSF to 2.x. I would have to stage patches 12917525 and 12979653. I'm afraid it will break the forms and reports though. Any ideas?

  • Best Practice for Deploying ADF application

I am tasked with developing a best or prefered practice of feploying a large ADF application. Background: we are in the process of redeveloping a UI for a large system. We have broken the system down into susbsytems. Each of these susbsystems UI will be a ADF aaplicaion(?). This is a move from a MS .Net front end. The backend (Batch processes etc) is being dveloped in Java. So my question is if I have several ADF projects for each subsystem and common components that they all will use - what is the best practice to compile package and deploy? The deployment will be to weblogic server or servers(Cluster).
We have a team of at least 40 -50 developers worldwide so we are looking for an automated build and deploy and would like to follow Oracle best practice. So far I have read Deploying ADF Applications (http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E15523_01/web.1111/e15470/deploy.htm#BGBJHGFH) and have followed the links. I have also look at the ADF evangalist blogs - lots of chatter about ojdeploy. My concern about ojdeploy is that dependent files are also being compiled at the same time. I expected that we want shared dependent files compiled only once (Is that a valid concern)?
So then when we build the source out of subversion (ojdeploy ? Ant? ) then what is best practice to deploy to a weblogic server (wslt admin console) - again we want it to be automated.
Thank you in advance for replies.
    RK

    Rule 1: Never use the "Automatically Expose UI Componentes in a New Managed Bean" option, create your bindings manually;
    Rule 2: Rule 1 is always right;
Rule 3: In doubts, refer to rule 2.

  • Best Practice for unimplemented OTC project transports?

    Hello,
We implemented and went live with portions of ERP modules COPA, MM, GL(new), and Consolidations 2 years ago as a Phase 1 implementation.  Phase 2, which began directly afterwards, included CRM, OTC, and BW.  The problem that has come up is that due to numerous implementation issues, we have not gone live with Phase 2 and it is still undetermined when/if we will implement at least OTC in ERP.  We have a 3-system (Dev, QA, Prod) ERP landscape and are running into issues due to inconsistencies between QA and Prod.  All the transports related to the Phase 2 project were created in Dev and moved into QA, but due to the status of the project were never moved into Production.  We recently had an issue with moving changes to our operating concern through the landscape, due to the existing inconsistencies of the operating concern configurations between Dev, QA, and Prod which led to us not being able to re-activate the Operating Concern in Prod until we moved in additional transports that were tied to Phase 2.
My question is this...What would be the best practice/approach to resolving the inconsistencies in our ERP landscape to assure that we have accurate QA testing of our Phase 1 implementation, but also trying not to lose the existing Phase 2 development if we decide to implement OTC in the future?  I'm considering the below options:
    A)  Move all Phase 2 requests
    - Refresh QA (via system copy of Prod)
    - Move all Phase 2 transports that were originally moved into QA into the refreshed system and test existing Phase 1 business processes to determine risk of moving into Prod
    - Move all Phase 2 transports into Prod in order to maintain 3-system consistency
    B)  2 system consistency
    - Refresh QA (via system copy of Prod)
    - Leave all Phase 2 transports in import queue for QA, and maintain Prod/QA consistency only
    - OTC implementation can be realized with moving Phase 2 transports through QA at some point in the future
    C)  "Reset button"
    - Refresh QA (via system copy of Prod)
    - Refresh Dev (via system copy of Prod) - I'm not sure what technical considerations would need to be made around the development system's role as the origin of rep and dictionary objects and how this can be maintain in a system copy?
    - This would wipe out all Phase 2 development
I would greatly appreciate anyone's guidance on our options given our current scenario.
    thanks,
    John

I would suggest to go with the option A though it seems more work with this option. But this is the only option which can effectively work in the long run. With option B, you will not completely eliminate the problem and with option C, you will loose all your phase 2 work, which will be big waste of the efforts.
Additional advantage with option A is that whenever your organization decides to go-live with Phase 2 work then minimal regression testing will be required as most of your work will be already tested and verified. Regression testing and remediation is significant work whevever a solution is introduced in a working environment.

  • Best Practices for Maintaining SSAS Projects

We started using SSAS recently and we maintain we one project to deploy to both DEV and PROD instances by changing the deployment properties. However, this gets messy when we introduce new fact tables in to DEV data warehouse (that are not promoted to
Production data warehouse). While we work on adding new measure groups and calculations (based on new fact tables in DEV) we are unable to make any changes to production cube (such as changes to calculations, formatting etc) requested by business
users. Sorry for long question but is there is a best practice to manage projects and migrations? Thanks.

    Hi Sbc_wisc,
You can create a new project by importing the metadata from the production cube on the server, using the template, Import from Server (Multidimensional and Data Mining) Project, in SQL Server Data Tools (SSDT). And then make some changes on this project
and then redeploy it to production server.

  • Data Model best Practices for Large Data Models

We are currently rolling out Hyperion IR 11.1.x and are trying to establish best practces for BQYs and how to display these models to our end users.
So far, we have created an OCE file that limits the selectable tables to only those that are within the model.
Then, we created a BQY that brings in the tables to a data model, created metatopics for the main tables and integrated the descriptions via lookups in the meta topics.
This seems to be ok, however, anytime I try to add items to a query, as soon as i add columns from different tables, the app freezes up, hogs a bunch of memory and then closes itself.
Obviously, this isnt' acceptable to be given to our end users like this, so i'm asking for suggestions.
Are there settings I can change to get around this memory sucking issue? Do I need to use a smaller model?
and in general, how are you all deploying this tool to your users? Our users are accustomed to a pre built data model so they can just click and add the fields they want and hit submit. How do I get close to that ideal with this tool?
    thanks for any help/advice.

I answered my own question. in the case of the large data model, the tool by default was attempting to calculate every possible join path to get from Table A to Table B (even though there is a direct join between them).
in the data model options, I changed the join setting to use the join path with the least number of topics. This skipped the extraneous steps and allowed me to proceed as normal.
hope this helps anyone else who may bump into this issue.

  • SolMan CTS+ Best Practices for large WDP Java .SCA files

As I know, CTS+ allows ABAP change management to steward non-ABAP objects.  With ABAP changes, if you have an issue in QA, you simply create a new Transport and correct the issue, eventually moving both transports to Production (assuming no use of ToC).
We use ChaRM with CTS+ extensively to transport .SCA files created from NWDI. Some .SCA files can be very large: +300MB. Therefore, if we have an issue with a Java WDP application in QA, I assume we are supposed is to create a second Transport, attach a new .SCA file, and move it to QA. Eventually, this means moving both Transports (same ChaRM Document) to Production, each one having 300 MB files. Is this SAP's best practice, since all Transports should go to Production? We've seen some issues with Production not being to happy with deploying two 300MB files in a row.  What about the fact that .SCA files from the same NWDI track are cumulative, so I truly only need the newest one. Any advice?
FYI - SAP said this was a consulting question and therefore could not address this in my OSS incident.
    Thanks,
    David

  • Advice on best workflow for large Motion project

I am a part-time video editor/designer/motion graphics creator/etc. Normally, I work on projects with pieces no longer than 5 minutes, even if the projects themselves might be 30-40 minutes of total material--mostly video support for conferences and awards shows.
Right now I am embarking upon a mark larger project--10 30-minute segments, each of which is 100% motion graphics. They all involve a speaker against a green screen for the entire segment with the motion graphics keyed in front of and behind him.
We recorded this directly to hard drive in a studio that had a VT4 (Video Toaster) system, so the best Mac-compatible codec they could provide me for clean green-screening was full-resolution component video. This is giving me great keys, but I also have about 500 GB of raw footage.
In this project, I need to first edit all the takes from each episode into a clean 30-minute piece, and then add the motion graphics. And this is where my question comes in. It seems to me FCP is much better for editing the raw video, but that Motion is where I want to do just about everything else. I need to somehow bring the video into Motion, because I want to create "real" shadows against my background from my keyed footage.
When working with a long project, and with a full-resolution codec, what is my smartest workflow? I am trying to spend the least time possible rendering back and forth, and also avoid generating huge in-between files each step of the way. It seems that any way to approach it has plusses and minuses, so I want to hear from people who have been there which path gets me to my goal with the least hassle.

"Real shadows are only faked in Motion. You have many options including a simple drop shadow or a copy of your matte layer filled with a gradient and a gradient blur applied with a distortion filter so it appears to be projected onto the wall. Be sure to take the time to make this a template effect and to keyframe the shadow angle if the foreground subject moves.

Well, you've got two conflicting interests. One, you have to sync the Motion work with the video of the keyed speaker and, two, you have to edit. But it seems to me that your planning must include lots of design work up front, media you can re-use or modify slightly, text formatting that can be precomped, a large stock of effects you will apply over and over again. Do all of this stuff first.
You also want to explore working at lower rez through your planning and roughing stages. for instance, there's no reason to pull a full rez copy of your foreground into Motion if all you need to do is sync to his audio and get rough positioning. You can put him over black and export all of his clips using any medium to low rez codec at reduced frame rates and just use the Screen Blend Mode to drop him roughly onto your Motion projects.
You'll get lots of advice over the next few days. If you're posting to other Motion or motion graphics forums, please do us all a favor and return someday to all of your threads and tell us what you did and what you learned.

  • Best practice for large form input data.

I'm developing an HIE system with FLEX. I'm looking for a strategy, and management layout for pretty close to 20-30 TextInput/Combobox/Grid controls.
What is the best way to present this in FLEX without a lot of cluter, and a given panel being way too large and unweildy.
The options that I have come up with so far.
    1) Use lots of Tabs combined with lots of accordions, and split panes.
    2) Use popup windows
    3) Use panels that appear, capture the data, then, make the panel go away.
I'm shying away from the popup windows, as, that strategy ALWAYS result in performance issues.
    Any help is greatly appreciated.
    Thanks.

In general the Flex navigator containers are the way to go. ViewStack is probably the most versatile, though TabNavigator and Accordion are good. It all depends on your assumed workflow.

  • Best Practice for SAP BW project implemetation/management

BACKGROUND: I have worked with Microsoft NAV ERP system, but in my new job I am working with SAP BW including BPS.
In Microsoft world we had a framework covering all aspects of a project form pre-sales, analyzis, design, implementation called Sure Step. (http://www.microsoft.com/dynamics/support/implementation/success.aspx)
The framework consist of templates like risk register, business case, requierement collection, questionaries and check-lists. In addition to cover the whole project management part of a project (texts about what should bee done in diffrent phases).
I found a template searching for some BPS stuff http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=SAPBPScreate+questionaree&source=web&cd=4&ved=0CDkQFjAD&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.sdn.sap.com%2Firj%2Fscn%2Findex%3Frid%3D%2Flibrary%2Fuuid%2F90465610-181c-2a10-eba4-eb6d550682f5%26overridelayout%3Dtrue&ei=7EzfTof3DqiQ4gTc0_C9Bg&usg=AFQjCNFJTtkQ8d3c3ZA_NbW0Gpot_m0SwQ
    QUESTION:
Does SAP have a similar project framework (for BW) with templates to use in different part of a project, like analysis, design and so on? Is it free for everybody to download and use?

    Hello Ramesh,
you should have a look at the SAP Instguide, and if it tells you to do as your colleagues say, open a ticket to SAP and ask, whether doing it the otherw ay could have spoiled your system. Anything but an official "yes, it's ok" won't help you.
For the other guys: have a loook at http://service.sap.com/instguides, there you can find all the guides you need.
    kind regards,

  • Best practices for hierarchy within project?

I am looking for some advice, here is my situation:
I have am using Labview and the DSC module to create an HMI for a customer.  I am connecting through OPC to a PLC, and I have access to over 1000 tags.  I don't use them all at the same time, but they are in my project.  I have imported them all as Network Shared Bound Variables.  I originally created "Virtual Folders" to store the bound variables by data type.  However, you are not allowed to view and edit them in the Multiple Variable Editor when they are in Virtual Folders.  So, as per recommendation by a Labview Engineer.  I converted all my Virtual Folders into "Libraries".  That worked well for me as I was able to view and edit my shared variables in the multiple variable editor.  But now, as I am attempting to build an application executable, I find that according to this article, I am supposed to combine all of my dependent libraries if I want my library to deploy programmatically.  This will lump 1000 variables all in the same folder where they will no longer be sorted by PLC data type.  It seems NI engineers and documentation are running me in circles, so I was hoping for a better way.  Anybody have any experience with this sort of thing?

I have been playing around with this problem for a little while and have a couple of suggestions for you.  The first is to place all of your variables within the same library and use the Multiple Variable Editor to sort the variables by data type.  This won't sort them in the project for you, but you will still be able to view and edit your tags by data type.  If this isn't quite what you are looking for, another thing you could try would be to use nested libraries.  Create a library and place your I/O Server inside.  Then create new libraries inside of the original library and arrange the variables inside of these sub-libraries.  You should still be able to edit them all in the Multiple Variable Editor and they should all still deploy because they are technically all still inside the same library as their I/O Server.  Let me know if this helps.
