Best Type of Camcorder?

What is the best type of camcorder to edit videos easily with iMovie HD and which brand, out of the categories below? I am kind of a nooby with camcorders. I have a budget of about $300-$350.
-DVD
-MiniDV
-Hard Drive
-Flash Memory
-Canon
-JVC
-Sony
-Samsung
-Panasonic

Thanks for the star Alec and if you have any other questions about the cam you buy or using it with iMovie, don't hesitate to come back here. Lots of knowledgeable folks willing to help here.
Small tip re firewire. Most camcorders do not come with that 6 to 4 pin firewire cable. Usually you just get a USB cable for taking still photos off a memory stick or SD card that most miniDV cams also use for still pic recording.
If you buy a Sony miniDV, they call firewire "iLink", but it's exactly the same cable and you can usually get one for around $10.00 from online sources, like B&H Photo, which also has good prices on tapes, but that's another whole issue which you will want to do a bit of research on.

But fixed point arithmetic is isomorphic to integer arithmetic.

Fixed point? There is no fixed point. One would have to create such a class, and I would imagine it would be done using integers -- probably longs actually. Is that what you're trying to convey that any fixed point handling would be done using integers?

  • Best compression type for camcorder footage archiving?

I have an increasing amount of "raw" digital camcorder data that's been downloaded onto my Mac, taking up increasingly large amounts of disk space. I'd like to archive much of this to DVD or an external hard drive, but may well want to edit it at a future date in FCP.
My question is, what compression format should I use? I'm looking for something relatively "future-proof" in terms of likely developments, but will have as little visible loss as possible. I don't need ridiculously small files - a reduction of anything over 50% of the current 13BG per hour would be a start.
I have Compression Master 4.1, which seems to offer an amazing amount of codecs, formats, rates, etc.

If you captured all the footage (I assume DV) properly in FCP, in other words, with timecode. Then there is no real need to archive that footage. Just keep the original tapes and make sure to keep your FCP project file and any other non timecode material you may have used... music, graphics, titles etc.
If you ever need to re-edit a project. Simply open the project and re-capture the footage.
If you compress it to archive it's gonna look bad next time you use it and you will not be able to match it to any existing sequences.

  • What type of camcorder should I buy?  Which works best with iMovie?

Ok...so from my previous post I have come to the conclusion with some help from my new discussion board friends , that I should ditch my Sony mini DVD, and reinvest in a mini DV camera for ease of use with QT Pro and iMovie....that being said...tell me what YOU ALL use? How easy is it to connect to Mac? Firewire? Editing? iMovie making? Trial and errors? Pro/Cons? Sony? Other brands?

    Hi Karsten et al.
I have a problem that I am desperate for any kind of feedback from. Can you help?
Last week I bought a Sony DCR-SR90 HDD camcorder, thinking it would be simple to pull files from this hard drive camcorder straight into iMovie.
However, there is only a USB connection, and the bundled software is for PCs only. I had to download an MPEG2 program from Apple (£14.99) just to be able to import the files and now it does so, but without sound. Moreover, the quality of the image is awful in the iMovie viewing window.
I have a feeling that this Sony camcorder, though quite new, is not compatible with an Apple Powerbook and/or iMovie. This is disastrous as it cost £850 and I need it for my own wedding in September.
My question is: is it worth taking this machine back to Jessops and getting a Mini-DV camcorder that is definitely compatible with Apple/iMovie, or is there a way to get this funky Sony camcorder to sync/work with a Mac?
Second: if I exchange it for a different camcorder, which one should I get guys???!!! (it's vital that it works with iMovie as I like to make decent edited home movies with music, effects etc).
    Can you help???

  • What is the best type of xml storage for max performance in 9i r2

We have many schema based xml's of 1MB in xdb (9.2.0.5)
and our database is getting slower by every new xml
    delete_resource (300 sec) and create_resource (300 sec ) take a long time
and if I ftp a schema based xml out the xdb takes a long time ( 200 sec )
Our system works like this , the xml comes in (ftp) ,the xdb validates the xml and then the xml is archived and the
last step, the xml data is extracted and put in normal tables
no xml updates or xml constraints
I have now defined in the schema, one main table and I use oracle types for complextypes and xdb:defaulttable =""
in 10g I don't have problems, but our production system
are 9.2.0.5 and it takes a lot work and downtime to change that
This goes well in 9i by files smaller then 500k
what is the best schema configuration for max performance ( create / delete resource and ftp out )
    thanx edwin

    I changed
    maxOccurs="unbounded" xdb:SQLName="TRANSACTIONRANGE" xdb:SQLCollType="TPF_MASTER_D_T_RANGE_COLL_01"
    into
    maxOccurs="unbounded" xdb:SQLName="TRANSACTIONRANGE" xdb:SQLInline="false" xdb:defaultTable="TPF_MASTER_D_T_RANGE_TAB"
this gives me very good performance
the total run is now 6 times faster

  • What's the best type of anti-virus or spyware to use for cleaning up my MacBook Pro? I recently switched to a mac from pc, so don't know much about my computer yet.

I recently switched to a macbook pro from a pc, and am curious what type of (if any) virus protection or spyware protection to use for it.  I keep getting a message to Install MacKeeper 2012; but am not sure if it's worth paying for or not.  I'd like some advice on what would be the best protection for my computer.  Also, I recently had the new microsoft office installed; which has been having issues freezing up quite often when I use it.  I don't know if clenaing my mac would help with the Microsoft office stuff, or not (or even if that would be related)...also each time I restart my computer; all windows applications open (word, power point, excel & outlook).   obviously I'm not very tech savvy to begin with so any advice would help!  I'm hoping this computer will last me thru the next 4 years of grad school & just want to make sure this computer is well taken care of to last that long.  Thanks!

  • What type of camcorder??????????

My goal is to store video clips(movies) of my newborn that is coming soon. I keep all of my pictures on my mac and therefore my ipod. My thought is - won't we be able , in the near future, to carry around our ipods with pics and videos for families to view? Well, here's my issue: I borrowed a dvd camcorder and tried to get video on to computer-didn't work(VOB FILES OR SOMETHING) I saw all of the "fixes" way too much work... so the dvd option is nice if you feel like carrying around the camcorder or a dvd player to show people your pride and joy. And aren't these of better quality and the newest of technology? So then I say, what about these miniDV cameras-I can put those videos on the computer BUT aren't they lower quality than DVD? AND there is the issue of keeping all those tapes around- aren't we moving towards less media(tapes discs etc)??? So then I say, what about these new hard drive cams like the JVC everio....Can you put those videos on your computer or (imovie)? Is the quality as good as DVD or MiniDV? There are no cumbersome tapes or cd's... Can I burn DVD's with the files that I transfer from the hard drive camcorder- if so isn't this the best option- this way I can have them on my computer, "mess" with them on iMovies, then burn a dvd of my finished product, and/or keep it on my ipod(video ipod when I get one)? If all these options are true for the hard drive camcorder then I guess the biggest downfall would be all of the storage space being taken up on my computer from the camcorder files(but then again I would have them on DVD so I could take them off the computer?????) Any ideas or thoughts?

Typically I think MiniDV tapes hold about an hour of video at normal quality (SP vs. LP). Although just now checking, it looks like there are 80 minute tapes out there as well. In general, while you could switch the camcorder to LP mode and get 90 minute or a couple hours out a tape, you want to stick with SP mode. My understanding is that SP mode is fairly well standardized across the field and, in theory anyway, any SP recorded MiniDV tape should play on any camcorder that supports it. But the LP mode is apparently not standardized enough to different manufacturers may treat it somewhat different than the next. So if you record all your tapes in LP mode on a Canon, then later it breaks and you replace it with a Sony, those old tapes may not play back correctly on the new equipment.
Plus tape is cheap, so why take the quality hit if you are talking about those irreplaceable precious moments, right?
Anyway, back to your questions. One hour of DV format video is about 13GB data. If you get a MiniDV camcorder I highly suggest you invest in an external high capacity Firewire drive. They are pretty cheap now and you can often buy or put together 160-250GB models for $100 or less. But even a 250GB drive will fill up fairly fast with video work. Mine formats out to about 232GB and that is 17.8 hours of video, but since I try not to fill it past about 85-90% capacity, this translates to about 15-16 hours of video. I have already put together another 160GB external FW drive and am looking to put another together and/or replace my eMac's internal 80GB drive with something much larger.
You can store video footage on a DVD as a data DVD through Apple's finder or use something like Toast. But keep in mind that a DVD blank will only hold about 20 minutes of footage, so it takes three to backup one tape. Also, optical media is not yet proven to be long term reliable, so I wouldn't trust it and if I was going to use it for storing video, I would likely make two or three duplicate sets, so now you are talking 6 or 9 DVDs to back up a single tape. At that point it is probably easier and about the same price to backup movie projects back out to digital tape and store the duplicate tapes in a cool, dry place, preferably in a different location that the masters.
I am hoping BluRay DVD drives hurry and drop in price since a single BluRay DVD can hold about 50GB. Once the media itself gets down to under a buck, it would be easy to back up hard drives or several iMovie projects onto a single BluRay DVD and so duplicates would only require two or three bluray blanks to back up 3 or 4 hours of video vs. 6 or 9 current technology DVD blanks for a single hour. It still doesn't solve the longevity issue, but now it because very easy to back up full projects in one step.

  • Best low cost camcorder to use with imovie?

Currently use windows movie maker and Canon A620 for simple home movies. Some other movie programs won't recognize the Canon format from the camera. Considering macbookpro when leopard and ilife 07 released.
Looking at lower cost comparisons between Sony and Canon in tape and mini DVD. Sony had better reliability & picture & sound ratings in leading consumer magazine of older similar models, but I had the impression Canon might work better with Apple in general?
Also is the current version of iMovie not compatible with formats used by miniDVD?
Since these cameras are all newer will iMovie recognize them, or is there an update to improve compatibility with newer models
    Specifically comparing:
Canon ZR850 to Sony DCR-HC38 Mini DV
Canon DC-210 to Sony DCR-DVD108 Mini DVD
Looking for comments or other recommendations

    Mark,
You wrote: "..My iMac has 1-400MB and 1-800MB Firewire port. The 400MB port is in use by a hard drive so I want to use the 800MB port for a camcorder. My research has led me to a Firewiredirect.com site that has 4pin to 9pin cables, so I think this will work.."
    ..but I doubt it.
I've never got a Sony camcorder to work with a Mac by connecting it with a 4-pin-to-9-pin cable to a FireWire 800 port. But you may be luckier!
However, I often get a Sony camcorder to work by "daisy-chaining" it through an FW400 hard drive, as long as the external hard drive has two FW400 sockets on it. Not all camcorders will work this way - and notably not Canons.
But if the hard drive has two FW400 connections, connect the drive to the Mac with one of them, and plug the camcorder into the other socket on the hard drive. (..You may have to experiment by swapping over the connections to see which way works best..)
With a Sony camcorder plugged into the hard drive, and the hard drive plugged into the Mac, the camcorder should be perfectly visible to the Mac ..and you should be able to save your video onto either the Mac's internal disc, or the external disc ..as long as the external disc is formatted as 'Mac OS Extended', and not as MS-DOS-compatible, or FAT32, or some other Windows format.
If your external hard disc has an FW800 socket, then I'd connect it into your iMac via FW800, and plug the camcorder into the FW400 socket on the Mac. The hard disc - if it has an FW800 connection - will probably work better (..i.e; faster..) through that connection anyway.

  • Best type of case for iPod Video 30GB

  • What's the best type file to export to?

Please help. I am simply making training video's and am no expert in FC. My problem is...
If i export to just straight .mov the file is Way to big. If i try to export to mpeg4 then it's way to crappy looking. isn't there some sort of medium? is there a way to export it to a nice looking file that doesn't take 20 gigs for 30 minutes of video? i have tried Divx but it doesn't work (audio is always 10seconds behind). There just doesn't seem to be an option. All i want to do is fit a 50 minute lecture on a 4.7g DVD (not actually making a dvd but just fit the video file on it). any advice?

I am simply making training video's
then you should be making interactive DVD's Export as QT not sel-contained - import to Compresssor a select 60 minute best quality then import the m2v and AC3 files into DVD studio Pro
(a 50 minute lecture is not a training video)

  • What's the best type of RAM for a MacBook?

I'm considering buying a MacBook (Well, begging my parents to buy me a macbook:P) and would like to know if there's any one type of RAM that runs better than another. Please note that I'll only consider the RAM if it's cheaper than ordering more RAM when I order a MacBook online. If you could post a link to where it's being sold, or a price with it (I'm canadian, but if you have the price in american it would still be helpful).
    Many thanks,
    Kyle L.

I'd also reccomend the gskill ram from newegg. I bought 2 gigs of it, and the machine is blazing fast. Not a problem with it (besides initially when I hadn't pushed it in far enough, but that was easily fixed by pushing it in all the way). I think it cost $170 or so. You might be able to find somewhere else and save $5, but I've found it's hardly worth it. newegg has great prices, and I've never had a problem with them.
Good luck with the begging for a macbook, and remember to get applecare These things are too expensive to fix when they break otherwise.

  • What is the best type of data structure for this type of data?

Animal --> (List of types like Mammal, Reptile, etc)
    Mammal --> (List of families)
    Etc.
So basically there is a key then a list of other keys with more items.
At first I thought a Map<String, Map<String, Map<String,...etc but the number is unknown so I'm not sure how to structure it.

I'd just use a flat Map<String,String> and stick all categories in that

  • What is best type of 'new' video camera to buy for editing with PE 10?

I currently own two Sony miniDV camcorders (models DCR-HC28 and HC40) and was doing fine in Premiere Elements and recently upgraded to version 10. I was in the process of using the HC40 cam as a 'pass-through' device to digitize some old VHS tapes, and it worked well for copying from VHS to miniDV tape. Then, I could capture in Premiere Elements and edit, etc. (It would never work to pass all the way through to capture in PE in one step using Firewire).  Now, the HC40 camera has locked up on me halfway through my box of VHS tapes, and is stuck showing the Time/Date screen and the touch screen seems to be disabled.  What to do?
There do exist plenty of used DCR-HC40 and 52s (which also support pass-through) on Amazon for sale in the $200 range, and that is one option.  I also went to Best Buys this week and looked at all the new Sony video cameras, and they fell into basically two series:  the DCR-SX series, which record in standard definition onto flash memory (SD cards), and the more expensive HDR-CX series, which record in Hi Definition (also on SD cards) but also, I was told, can record in standard definition.  The miniDV camcorders are no more, apparently.  I am not so enamored of HD recording that I would go whole hog for it, as I am happy with the results I have been getting with my miniDV cameras once burned to DVD or converted to MPEG or MP4 for playing on my iPhone, etc. Plus, HD takes up so much more memory and space on the hard drive compared to standard def files.
I called Sony tech services today to find out that none of the new cameras support the pass-through function for digitizing from old VHS cassettes, so I am looking at buying a VHS-digitizing device as recommended here on the forum such as the ADS Pyro AV Link or Grass Valley ADVC110.  Since I would rather spend that money on a new video camera instead of merely the AV link device which I will have no use for once the tapes are digitized, my question comes back to the cameras. Which of the new cameras will be most ideal for editing in PE10 going forward, or is it best to stick with miniDV for now?
Steve G has always seemed to point out that miniDV tape and the ensuing AVI files are the best for PE to work with.  Sony told me today that even the SD cameras such as the DCR-SX65SD ($219) now record onto the SD cards in MPEG2 format, and that AVI is a thing of the past that died with the miniDV tapes.  I assume MPEG2 still comes out as different clips that one assembles on the Timeline in PE10?  One probably could convert the MPEG2 files to AVI, but would that give the same quality as an original AVI file from a miniDV tape? And if MPEG2 is the new standard going forward, do the resulting videos made with PE10 have the same quality as those made from 'native' AVI files?  I will buy a used DCR-HC40 miniDV camera if the end result is better than those to be obtained with the brand new DCR or HDR series cameras now available in stores.  But if the quality is the same, I could perhaps opt for one such as the HDR-CX 130HD ($349) which also records in SD in case some years from now I decide I really DO want to switch to HD formats.
Any advice on choice/use of the newer cameras and their default formats such as MPEG2 is welcome, in relation to PE10 editing and output capabilities.
    Thanks very much,   paultool3

    Dear JM and Steve,
Thanks much for your replies.  I plan to get my DCR-HC40 miniDV camera fixed so I can use it for pass-through digitizing from VHS tapes.  I also recently bought one of the Dazzle Video Creator Platinum capture units ($84 at Best Buys) just to try it, and actually got pretty good results in digitizing a VHS-C tape using a VHS-C to VHS adapter unit to play it in our VCR, and then using the Pinnacle Studio HD (version 15) that came with the Dazzle unit to import and digitize through the Dazzle unit.
The Dazzle unit would not show up in Premiere Elements 10 as an option to capture from, but did in Pinnacle Studio 15.   I used our Sony VAIO with i7 processor and Pinnacle captured the one hour, twenty-five minute- long VHS-C tape to a single 18GB .AVI  clip which I then was able to bring into Premiere Elements 10 and use for output in various formats.
When using a less powerful laptop initially, the digitizing failed, with 319 dropped frames in the first 5 minutes.. So it takes a more powerful computer to work with a capture unit like Dazzle, apparently.
I will eventually be shopping around for a new,  AVCHD format video camera as well based on your recommendations, but the current group of Sonys in this category, such as the HDR-CX130HD ($349) which record video onto SD cards, are getting bad reviews from CNET, claiming they have poor quality HD and other issues.  So for the forseeable future I will be sticking with miniDV using my Sony DCR-HC28 and HC40 camcorders.
