Best way to access Choice column 'choices'?

Hi,
Background: I have a Choice field passed down from a Content Type Hub to a content type used in a Document Library in another site collection. This choice column has a lot of 'choice entries' (<Choice 1>, <Choice 2>
etc....). These entries will probably increase or possibly change in time. A colleague is writing a simple front end solution that uses a separate SQL backend which requires to know the 'choice entries'.
Issue: So as to have the most up to date list of 'choices', the colleague has a requirement to 'look at' or export these choice entries from the SharePoint backend - and is asking for the sql table where they
are held.
I am aware that being touchy-feely with the back-end is not a good idea, but out of interest have done some research into the table location but have made no progress so far.
Questions:
1) Can the values be directly 'read' from the SQL backend and if so how?
2) Is there a better way to achieve this that is straightforward?
Many thanks in advance for any time and thought put into this issue
Jason

1. No.
2. to perform a "live" lookup, the SQL way, would require an ODBC or ADO.Net to SharePoint adapter, which could be used as a Linked Server within SQL. This is BEYOND impractical.
3. the BETTER approach would be to use something like a PowerShell script to pull the choices into a SQL database, which would be run on a scheduled task.
4. Alternatively, depending on how the CHOICE field was defined for use, it may be possible to change the column from being a CHOICE field to being a BCS ("external data") field, and point it to some external database table that can also be used
by this other thing... there are implications that may suggest that this approach is NOT desirable, but it may be worth considering
it should also be pointed out, that as far as integration goes, best practice is to NOT perform direct lookups across systems... integrated data points should be REPLICATED to a LOCAL copy, as to ensure that the related data is using relationships local
to the database. By doing so, if the remote system ever changes, the only change is in the integration... any application that's doing the lookup (using the LOCAL copy), or queries that utilize relationships (such as JOINs) will still continue working fine
(albeit they may be using outdated data until the integration is updated).

    Hi,
if you don't have a binding the I am not sure the binding context is created. Anyway, try
BindingContext.getCurrent().findDataControl("name here as ID in DataBindings.cpx") and see if it returns a valid instance

  • Best way to access my mac G4 files when working on a windows pc laptop

Hi - I'm looking for ideas on the best way to access files stored on my G4 mac, when working on a pc laptop elsewhere in the house.
I'm not sure if this involves setting up a network, or whether I should be looking at ftp or even bluetooth.
Just to explain what I'm after: I'm writing a book, primarily on my g4 (running panther) in my study. But I spend a large proportion of my day running after my rampaging toddler. I'd like to make better use of my time by being able to grab my partner's laptop and write while my toddler is occupied for twenty minutes.
Messing around with a memory stick etc would just take too long as I'd have to remember to update the main file. It would get very messy!
    I hope someone can help!
    Thanks, Tina

Between the networking question(s) to connect the two different platform
computers, using Sharing and other settings in each, the next question is
about the software used in the documents you are to be creating in one
    and sending to the other.
    Do you have a similar word processing software for the PC as in the Mac;
or something compatible in creating and using .RTF documents, etc. Or,
if you have a Windows version of AppleWorks, that would work. And the
TextEdit in your OS X can handle rich text format word processing; and
probably open basic text from a PC fairly easy. (And Word, etc, can.)
Issues in sharing, are such that you have to be careful when changing the
settings in your computers, that you don't accidentally share your computer
contents with other persons and computers in the vicinity. By wire would be
the most secure, since Ethernet can be used locally to share.
Internet and wireless may be a possibility, too; or using a local shared external
drives, if visible to both computers, depending on the network setup.
Do you have a USB hard disk drive set up on your wireless network, and
formatted in Fat32 so the Mac and PC can both see and use it? If so, you
may be able to send documents to there from the PC and use them in the
Mac. This may work, and depending on how the files were organized, not
too hard to keep up with the draft copies generated from the PC for use in
the Mac at a later time, and so on. This way, both computers would not
need to be on, to send & receive a file...
    {For that matter, using a Google Account could be helpful;
    to just email the writing to yourself, at any computer.}
Anyway, there are several possibilities, including those in the link to another
discussion on that topic per the above post.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Best way to access files at two different locations

    Hey Guys,
I am in need of some help. We currently have about six macs in our prepress department all accsessing 1 mac mini with three external drives that store all our files. We also work out of those drives, not on our local machines.
So far this has worked out well for us. However, in the next few weeks we will be opening a new shop about 20 miles away, that will need access to all these same exact files. We are not sure of what the best way to do this is.
Currently the mac mini we are on does not have osx server just osx. Also we have about 4-5 TB of customer files, and any given file that we are working on or would need access to could be up to 2 GB's.
We are open to all and any ideas. Obviously the cheaper the better, but please give me any and all ideas so that we can evaluate every option and decide what is best for our company.
We know that our current state of using external drives on a mac mini in not a realistic solution for ever as eventually our drives will fill up and I think we are out of usb ports to add new ones on.
Also this cannot be a one time type of fix as once we get this new location set up and established, we plan to replicate it and open up a couple more in the comming years. Also seeing as we already have 4-5 TB of data we need something that is future proof so that as we continue to expand and grow we end up needing a new solution in 5 years.
Thank you for any and all help you can provided.

@rccharles// Do you know of any software that would duplicate or mirror a sever?
I do not have personal experience beyond dropbox.
    sync
SyncTwoFolders simply synchronizes two folders. might be more for client.
    https://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/22644/synctwofolders/
    Unix rsync
whether it copies mac metadata may depend on what version of X you have.  May depend transfer app you use AFS, NFS, Samba.
    dropbox
Well, if you want with Dropbox, you could use Dropbox to do the syncing. I think this is the way to go because you would get offsite backup. Not sure i'd try to sync the two servers. Duplicate each server to Dropbox.  Provide read-only access to the other site.
You could experiment around with two computers and a dropbox account.  See how it works for you.  It's free upto two gigs.
    versioning
dropbox has versioning build in.  using sometype of version system while necessary was viewed as a PITA by most programmers.  The best system would be an automated on where you didn't have to do anything beyond what you were doing before.  Timemachine, etc.
    dropbox
also would we just talk to our internet provider about a private fiber channel?
I think Linc Davis has the idea.
    Router-to-router VPN.
I was putting the concept out there.

  • Best way to access Excel & Word documents on iPad

On my iMac I have  a number of EXCEL and WORD documents created with Excel / Word MICROSOFT for MAC 2011.
I want to access these Word and Excel documents on my iPad.
I am confused as to what is the best way to do this.    Pages & Numbers with iCloud ........ or ....... CloudOn, the free, cloud based service that lets you run Word and Excel on the ipad????
When we are on holidays I need to VIEW or UPDATE Excel and Word documents on my iPad and then when we get home update my iMac with any changes that I may have made.
I do not need to print from my iPad whilst on holidays, only view and update.
Has anyone had experience with Pages and Numbers on their ipad using documents created with Microsoft for Mac 2011 on their Mac computer.  Does it work well and is it user friendly doing what I want it to do as detailed above?
    Thanks

    Thanks for that info Skydiver119.
I was hoping that if I had the apps  'PAGES' (for my Word docs) and  'NUMBERS' (for my Excel docs) loaded on my iPad that I would be able to access my documents without having to have internet access.
I understand that to get them there in the first place I need internet access and then to update back to my iMac when I get back home I would need internet access.
I am relatively new to iPad & apps etc. so maybe I have misunderstood the concept.  I thought that having the apps loaded onto my ipad, would mean that my documents would be there to access/edit/update when ever I needed to.   I mean of course, as I have already said above, once downloaded either by syncing through iTunes or iCloud to start with.
Can you (or anyone else!) please help with this
    Thanks

  • Best way to access RDBMS

    Hi,
I find that there are many ways to access databases in a JSP.
         1. Using scriptlets <% %>
         2. Using DataSource (I could not understand this. Please provide me some link which gives a basic tutorial of this scheme)
         3. Using a separate Java bean/class to retrieve data from DB.
Which of these schemes is the best to use for web applications? How exactly does DataSource work?

I find that there are many ways to access databases in a JSP.
    1. Using scriptlets <% %>A very bad bad pratices as far as maintainace is concern you would endup writing Kilo Lines of code and would be a herculian task if someone replaces your position in the maintainance / testing phase
    2. Using DataSource (I could not understand this. Please provide me some link which gives a basic tutorial of this scheme)As far as Datasource is concern read the below article which gives you very gud idea about what it is,how to use it..etc
    http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.4.2/docs/guide/jdbc/getstart/datasource.html
    3. Using a separate Java bean/class to retrieve data from DB.Well you would create multiple of similar instances for the sake increasing the load on container.
Well I kind of Support wat my fellow poster(above me) said...
I think it should something Like this
    JSP,View Beans (View)
    |
    |
    |
    Controller (Webtier under Web-Container)
    |
    |
    |
BeanFactory (MODEL / Business Tier could be EJB / IoC [Spring] Containers)
    |
    |
    |
    |
    ORM (DBAccess)
(Layer could be COAD,Hibernate,JDO,Persitant Beans,Toplink or custom built Architecture by yourself using the Datasource configured by you)
Most of the people prefer each of these layers to be loosely coupled & prefer each one them to run independently.
and most of the people prefer using singleton/prototype instantions effectively which reduces load on the containers too.
However, there are many other practises where this can change as per requirements....
and a small advice please always use J2EE Patterns & Best Pratices for devolping a better design..
    Hope this might help :)
    N'joy coding...

  • Best way to access facebook on E72?

So the official facebook app for E72 is useless, and the mobile version of the facebook site is dreadful. To me, it's appaling that Nokia will sell you a "smartphone" that doesn't offer an efficient and straightforward way to access the number one social network in the world. Many people I know buy these kinds of phones with portable facebook access as their main incentive to drop half a month's paycheck on such phone.
Having said that, I would like to ask of this community, what do *you* think is the best way to get on facebook using this phone? All answers are appreciated!

The E72 come with a facebook icon in menu > internet, for some versions this is simply an internet bookmark, and opening it will launch the phone's browser and take you to the mobile version of the facebook website. As far as I am concerned, and I have also many opinions in the same vein, the mobile version of the facebook website is terrible. Other versions of the E72 already have the "official" facebook app (available free at Ovi Store) pre-installed. However, this app has several well-documented issues, including problems with logging in and an 'options' button that won't work.
So yes, you are missing something. Have you ever used the facebook app on an iPhone or Blackberry? They are miles ahead of the app for the E72 and the mobile version of the facebook website. If Nokia expects to compete with these devices, it must offer a solution to access facebook which is just as good as the ones on those phones.

  • What's the best way to access internet

I have a desktop with DSL, in my workroom. With my Powerbook, I want to access the internet from various places in my apartment. I guess this means wireless, correct? Otherwise I'd need to have a really long cord connecting to my DSL, yes? So what do I need and will I really be able to access the net from any room? The Airport bus doesn't have enough ports, altho if it's the best way, I'm open.

I don't know what the AppleCare guy was talking about. This is a quote from the Apple Store Online information about the Airport Base Station"
"Using the AirPort Extreme Base Station, up to 50 users can work and play on the Internet simultaneously up to 150 feet away from the base station. "
You only need one "port" to plug your cable or DSL modem, with an Ethernet cable, into the base station. The computers connect wirelessly, using their internal Airport cards. (I am assuming you have Airport cards in your computers, as without them, you can't do anything wirelessly.)
If you have fewer than 50 computers, and you're not planning on sitting more than 150 feet from the base station, you should pretty much be able to go online, print, and network wirelessly from almost anywhere in your home or office. Add a second base station or an Airport Express base station, and you can extend that range.
As was stated above, there are some factors that interfere with the wireless connection (steel walls, etc.) but such issues are rare and can usually be fixed by moving the location of your base station.
By the way, if you only need to connect 10 or fewer computers, I'd go for the Airport Express. It can be connected to your home stereo, so you can wirelessly play your iTunes from your computer over your sound system, as well as do all of the other things you can do with a regular Airport Base Station. It's a great feature.
I just got an Airport Express, but before that, I used a NETGEAR wireless router. It was a lot cheaper than an Airport Base Station ($50 vs. $199!!!!) and it works flawlessly with my laptops and Airport cards.
So, unless you NEED an Airport Base Station, or want the Air Tunes capabilities of the Airport Express, I'd go for a third-party router, such as a NETGEAR, or a Linksys.
By the way, my NETGEAR allows me to hard-wire up to 4 computers to the router and also use several other computers wirelessly. If you need to do something like that, again, a third-party router is a better bet. You can also get non-wireless routers, but then you'd be chained to a specific location whe you surfed the web. What's the fun in that?

  • Best way to access files on Xserve via VPN on iPad?

Can anyone tell be the best solution for accessing files housed on the companies Apple Xserve remotely via VPN from an iPad? Numbers / Pages etc.
    thanks,
    Rick

The iPad doesn't natively support file systems such as those on servers, but there are third-party apps that can allow this. FileBrowser is one often mentioned, so you might look into that. VPN will be a separate issue; iOS has a built-in VPN client which works with many VPN systems, but you'll need to see if yours is supported.

  • Best way to access variables from actionCommand

Say I have a method which reads some data from a file, then stores it in a string. I have a button in this method with an ActionListener defined as follows:
                    btnOk.addActionListener(new ActionListener() {
                       public void actionPerformed(ActionEvent e) {
                           otherMethod();
});Now I need to pass the value of my string to this other method. What's the best way of doing this? Currently I have it declared at the top of the class but it seems a bit messy. I know I could declare the string final, but I need to set it conditionally depending on another variable, so I'd need to declare it before I initialize it's value. If it's declared final this won't work. Is the method I'm using now the usual way of doing this?

    Echilon wrote:

It'll lead to a sluggish interface, since I/O is slow.
A better solution is to invoke code that will cause the I/O to happen in a different thread. I think that Swing actually has built-in support for that, but I don't use Swing much so I don't know.

Final just means that once you assign it, you can't change it. You can still set its initial value conditionally.
I agree that it's messy to use fields for no other purpose than to pass values between methods.

  • Best way to access a Mac remotely?

I have a G5 tower at work and a G5 iMac at home, both running Tiger. I would like to access my files at work from my home computer.
What is the best, most efficient, and most cost-effective way of doing that? I don't need to perform major computer maintenance remotely -- just access files and occasionally fonts.
Should I invest in the new Apple Remote Desktop 3 that I've read about, or is there a simpler option built in to Tiger? ARD3 seems a bit more robust than I think I need.
My work computer is on a network with mostly Windows PCs. Don't know if that presents any special challenges...
    Thanks!

  • Best way to access JNDI configured DataSource from outside container

I'm not sure if this is the right forum category, but it seemed like a good place to start.
I have a DB2 database on an OS/390 mainframe that is configured as a JNDI datasource in WebSphere (WSAD) 5.1.x. I can get connections and do database transactions within my web-application just fine.
Part of my project needs a cron managed stand-alone application to do some database clean up work. It essentially needs to query one database, and then based on the results stick some data into the DB2 database. Easy enough right?
The issue here is that our Security department will not under any circumstances give us the passwords and users for either database. They give these only to the server admins who configure WSAD. We also can't use a properties file. The server admins either won't touch any properties file (it is considered "code" and they don't want to be responsible for problems) or they won't have access to the contents of the ears or jars we give them. This basically leaves us with our JNDI datasource as the only datasource we could access (because the admins will have it configured with a username and password). There is also no way to infer a valid username/password from the owner of the web-app since it will live on an NT box and the NT user won't have mainframe rights.
There is also no possibility of bending these rules no matter how stupid or cumbersome they are.
So my question is, what is the best method in which to gain access to this JNDI DataSource or a Connection from this DataSource? Can I even get a DataSource from a JNDI lookup? Is JMS/RMI or some other acronymn that I don't know about the only way to acomplish this?
We're using Struts MVC -> Spring -> Hibernate in the webapp, if that helps.
    Thanks in advance.

You seem to be asking: "how can a standalone app get a valid DB2 connection by leveraging the live objects in a WSAD application"?
While this is pretty far from my area of expertise, I don't think you can. While both JMS and RMI (and other technologies) can export some types of Java objects, they have to be objects that implement the java.io.Serializable interface. Connections cannot be serialized because these objects (normally) encapsulate a live TCP/IP connection. I don't see any fundamental reason a DataSource object couldn't be serialized other than security, but that very reason means that no reasonable implementation is going to be serializable; if it were serializable, you could almost certainly extract the value of the username and password from the serialized object. In other words, what you're really trying to do is get around security and Java's security is probably robust enough to prevent it.
If the DB credentials only live in the WSAD world, that's where the database work has to be done. However, there's no reason the work can't be driven by a servlet or JSP that is in turn invoked from a cron-driven script or application. Personally, I do such "event notifier" scripts in Perl; Java is a bit heavy for "start up, post to URL, shutdown", but if you have more work going on you could certainly use Java. If actually doing the work in the WSAD application is not acceptable, then you're probably stuck.

  • Best way to style a column in an interactive report?

Since I'd rather not do it directly in the SQL used to populate the report, can someone suggest a clean way to style all cells of a given column from an interactive report? Perhaps all cells of interest can be addressed through jquey using the "headers" attribute they share?

Oh, and I'd also like to make the vertical separations between cells aparent if possible....Please try this one:
