Best way to eliminate or at least lessen a cell phone interference noise in a video

We shot an interview the other day and even though we normally remember to tell people to turn off their cell phones, we forgot that day. Right in the middle of a good response we hear the annoying sound that cell phones cause with wireless mics. It only lasts a few seconds, but really takes away from what the interviewee is saying. Is there a way to lessen that noise or even get rid of it altogether?
Thanks.

This might work for you, depending on how intrusive the interference sound is, and what the other frequencies in the audio file are doing.

Here's a video that shows the basic workflow for removing sounds:

The removal of a cell phone ring is demonstrated at around 4 minutes in. The principle is the same.

  • What is the best way to eliminate room hum in my video?

I have a room hum in my clips that I wish to eliminate.
I downloaded Audacity and it worked fine, right up to the point where I exported it to FCE. In Timeline the sound file was out of sync and nothing I have tried will synchronize it with the video. I understand that going through the Audacity cleansing has removed the FCE signals that would have normally produced the out-sync- buttons in the Timeline so that I could rectify the problem.
I posed this problem in a previous post and crowed that I had solved the problem. Turns out, I had not, so here I am, with my tail between my legs, looking for assistance.
    1) Does anyone know of a way for me to export an audio clip from Audacity so that it is correctly reunited with its video in FCE?
    2) Is there a way to move an audio track one frame at a time along the Timeline track so that I can try to align they clips by trial and error? (I know; this sounds very sloppy)
    3) I have been reading with great interest the post by Tricial and her problems with Soundsoap. I was just about to give up on Audacity and then download Soundsoap trial software. Tricial feels, she states, that Soundsoap and FCE are not compatible. One respondent to her post sensibly suggested she contact Bias, the parent of Soundsoap, and ask if their product is compatible with FCE or not. An excellent suggestion. I went to the Bias site and found that in order to ask a question, you must provide a serial number! In other words, you must buy the product before you can ask if it works! I turned to their FAQ page, but this question is not addressed. The closest they come is to saying that Soundsoap works with Snow Leopard but for all I know, that may be only in iTunes or Garage Band.
I so messed up (not exactly the word I was thinking) my sound tracks that I have decided to start over and dump a couple of weeks work. Aargh.
    I would appreciate your wisdom.

    2) Is there a way to move an audio track one frame at a time along the Timeline >track so that I can try to align they clips by trial and error? (I know; this >sounds very sloppy)
Lock your video track, select the audio, type +01 then Enter.
A Move box will appear with the value 01 init, this means the audio will move forward one frame.
Type -01 to go backwards. Typing -02 is two frames etc.
Make sure there is nothing in the way or you will have a +Clip Collision+ warning.
    Can't help with Audacity.

  • Best way to ELIMINATE the MORAY EFFECT in a photograph that is moving?

    Hi.
I have a shot of a woman in a striped dress which has a slight move on it. When I export my sequence to QT and watch in the QT player, the image looks great.
But when I burn a dvd using DVDStudio pro and watch it on a monitor, the striped dress creates that nasty moray effect that is TOTALLY distracting....
How to eliminate this? Is it simply to deinterlace that particular shot in my sequence?
    Any ideas would be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Mark
(sorry, I unintentionally posted this to the Motion forum as well)

Have you tried a quick test with De-Interlace?
I'll hope someone has a great fix, as I run into this from time to time.
My solution to date has been to dupe the clip on a track above and place a very slight gaussian blur filter on the top clip, then add a Garbage Matte and/or Mask Shape/Mask Feather to iso the problematic area..
Might be able to use CC3way Limit Effect and tweak some levels...haven't tried that.
IIRC, I've tried 1pixel vertical shift in Motion tab and/or several of the Video Filters/Video-Shift Fields/Flicker Filter/Image Stabilizer...all to no acceptable effect.
Maybe I've just never correctly tweaked any of the filters. Dupe/Mask/Blur has worked.

  • Best way to eliminate halo?

First, I'm working with Elements 3.
In certain situations, when sharpening and using the high pass filter and other things, halos will form around the edges -- a good example is a treeline where the sky becomes paler at the tips of the trees. The only solutions I've found are to clone over those spots or even to paint them to restore the natural colour. It's tedious, difficult, and often not very satisfactory.
Does anyone have another -- easier -- suggestion?
    Thanks in advance.

Halos are a classic sign that you are oversharpening. If you look closely, there is usually other degradation of your image going on when you reach that point. The best thing to do is back off the settings when you see halos.
For images where it's too late, it would help to post one so we can see exactly where you're at.

  • What's the best way to eliminate and old user's information completely?

My son recently purchased a new macbook pro and I would like to use his 3 year-old macbook as a back-up for home use. Is there a recommended method of eliminating all of his preferences and data? He has already transferred what he needs to his new computer and I want to clean this off as much as possible before adding myself as a new user. It's the white plastic model.

Log into his account on the computer. Open Accounts preferences and create a new account for yourself. Be sure to endow the account with admin privileges and in Login Options set your account for auto-login. Then log out of your son's account and log into the new account you made for yourself. Open Accounts preferences and delete your son's account. Open Sharing preferences and change the Computer Name to one of your choice.

  • What is the best way to eliminate dupe recs inbound Interface?

I want to do as little mapping code as possible. It is possible we may receive duplicates (every field is identical in the rec).
Will a Hashed table not allow me to insert a (TOTAL)(instead of a keyed table)duplicate?
Just because the keys are same, other fields in rec, like time, date, etc. may be different, I want to keep these.
I am thinking about one step to do a simple loop to transfer and update recs to table. Another, or second step ion batch to loop at the table for processing.
I am just looking for suggestions how others have handled this in the past.
             Thank-You.

  • Best way to eliminate duplicated songs in 2 logins?

Our Macbook has several users, and my son and I share iTunes. We've just discovered that, rather than sharing one copy of songs as we had assumed, we seem to have duplicated our songs in both logins - instead of using 60GB of hard disk space for our songs we seem to be using 60 in each log in. My questions are:
    1. How do I avoid this? I just discovered I should've put the itunes music folder into a shared folder, so I assume this is the problem.
    2. If that's correct, should I move my music folder to shared folders and just delete his? Then in his iTunes we oint him to the music in that shared folder?
    thanks!

Do the beeps occur while the narrataor is talking? You can just drop the volume of the track for a moment and the beep will go unheard. If the beep 'steps on' the narration, you'll get short dropout, but it may be okay.
Removing each beep will take four keyframes (two at the regular level, and two 'inside' taking the level down) but you can do it pretty quickly. Page 616 in the FCE3.5 manual indicates that if you hold the 'option' key when you click the level overlay, it places four keyframes at once.
It might help if you put markers on the track where you squelch the beep. Then you can turn off the audio 'waveform' display while you edit the video track.
I think you can accomplish what you want in iMovie, but using markers in FCE might be a significant help.

  • Best way to transfer all data to a new model phone...

Does anyone have a recommended and systematic way to transfer contacts, messages etc from one phone to another.
eg I recently upgraded from a 6310 to an N95. I discovered that some of my contacts inj the 6310 were onn the SIM and some were on the phone.
I tried to back-up the 6310 to my PC and then restore to the N95.
Somehow I ended up with many duplicated contacts, which meant that caller ID did not display names when i received calls.
I discovered that with Nokia help. But I am still left that stored messages which were transferred, are transferred ok, but now display the phone number instead of the contact name.
    so specific questions:
    1. any idea how to correct the issue I have with my phone
    2. generally, is there a systematic way to clean up a phone before transferring data to a new handset
    3. Any tips for systematically organising contacts on a phone? previously I have just added contacts, saved numbers etc, and the phone seems to have decided where to store them.
(I am not a luddite, I have a degree in electronics, I have worked in technical positions troubleshooting equipment and software for years, but I have never sat and played with mobiles to get the hang of how to use them efficiently - and I find the N95 user guide not so clear or helpful in some areas)
any sites or documents you can point me towards would be welcome.
    Thanks

    1. YOu have succeeded more than many others, the difference between 6310 and N95 is quite huge, 6310 is a rather simple Nokia S40 operating system phone and N95 is S60 phone with much more capabilities and there seems to be quite much differences between the models so I donät think you can get more than you have already.
    2. Which phone you want to clean the 6310 or the N95 I did not get that ? (anyways, you can if my memory serves me right clean the 6310 with some settings - restore factory settings. If it does not clean the contacts, calendar and messages, then you need to clean them using the applications themselves and dig into the settings of that particular area.
    3. If you think about N95 here, you need to use the appropriate fields: first name, last name and then you can choose from the phonebook settings that are the numbers displayed alphabetically by last name or surname. Also you can check if the phone displays names from phone memory, SIM or both.
YOur old contacts from 6310 are such that the phone does not have a means to make a difference between last/first name, so they may apprear only in lastname or first name field in your newq phone and you need to sort that out.

  • Any way to eliminate a melody instrument in a mono track by deleting its overtones?

I have a track of two melody instruments playing in unison (they're playing virtually the same notes at the same time). Is there a way to eliminate or at least lower the volume of one of those instruments by zeroing in on its overtones/partials/frequencies and deleting them or lowering their amplitude?
I've been attempting this for two days and thought it's high time I ask for help because the process is insanely slow so far. I've tried using filters and EQ but they seem to be too inaccurate. Another problem is that I'm working with Adobe Audition 3.0, so it doesn't have as great of a notch filter as CS6 or whatever the latest is. I've tried going into the spectral waveform view and manually deleting overtones but it's completely time consuming so far. I don't mind spending a couple days doing this to a track, but after two days I've only really gotten rid of the offending instrument on one note. Too slow.
    Any advice or thoughts?
    Thanks!

You will run into several problems with this, whatever you do. Firstly, unless you are extremely lucky, the instruments will share harmonics, especially if they are playing at the same pitch. Which means that you'll never be sure that you are attenuating the right harmonics anyway. The chances of all harmonics being at the same level for the same note whenever it's being played on an acoustic instrument are about zero - no processing based on that approach is going to work satisfactorily; It's a human performance you are editing, not scientifically determined tone generation, after all.
Having thought about it, there is one other tool that will display the harmonics better (and give you tools for modifying them) is iZotope's RX3. This isn't cheap either, but will give you a clear display of what's actually there if you manupulate its FFT settings. You can also do this up to a point in Audition (although I don't recall how much you can in Audition 3), but I've always found RX's display and tools rather useful for detailed excisions.
Perhaps a little perversely, the tool that's best able to distinguish two different players playing the same tune is the human ear. From what you're saying, I'd be inclined to leave it as an exercise in discrimination for the listener. Not least because in this situation, the nuances of somebody's performing style invariably depend, to a considerable extent, on the way that they've reacted to the other performer. Trying to remove that interplay isn't, IMHO, likely to help at all.
What are the two instruments concerned?

  • Best way to remove glare from glasses

I ended up having a picture take with a point and shoot camera.  What would be the best way to remove or at least look presentable to remove the glare from the glasses from one side?  It is bad but I want this picture to be as good as I can get it.

First I did Juergen's method and merged down the two layers.
    Now to improve the lighting...
    1. Add a Level adjustment layer. These were the original Levels settings:
    2. I moved the sliders like this to lighten the whole picture.
    3. I went one step further to lighten the background. Added another Levels and moved the middle slider left. This however also lightened the men further which I did not want to do, so on the layer's mask I painted over the men with black to mask out that portion of the Levels adjustment and reveal the previous Levels adjustment.
Rather than painting black you can select the men and on the mask fill the selection with black. In either case if you revealed too much or too little of the first Levels layer you can fine-tune the mask by painting black or white as needed.

  • What is the best way to manage the file space given how much GB the video clips use up?

I just downloaded a years worth of video off my HD camera.  I took up 125 GB on my hard drive.  What is the best way to manage this content going forward as there will be a lot more video to come in future years with small children!

    rule of thumb:
    SDef ~13GBs/h
    HDef ~30-40GBs/h ...
    latest investment of mine:
ext.HDD, usb2 (=I have no trouble using usb2 for editing my short projects), 1.5TB=70€  ...
... which adds to ~4.2TB for my hobby, incl. back-up drives ...

  • Best Way to Retain Battery?

I've done some research and gathered that most people think that it's better to let you macbook sleep than shut it down all the time, but now I have another question... Is it better to run the battery down all the way then recharge all the way or just charge whenever or leave it plugged into the wall whenever possible? I want to keep my battery at it's best. Thanks

+*I got the idea from the cell phones, some where I read or heard that it is better to let it drain all the way down and recharge it all the way up , because then it messes the charging cycles and I have seen it happen.*+
Actually, that's not quite correct either. Cell phones for pretty much their entire existence (maybe excepting those when they first came out nearly 20 years when they were carried around in little bags) have used lithium ion batteries... pretty much the same technology used in the batteries in your MacBook. While it was true for older battery technologies such as nickel metal hydride and nickel cadmium that you needed to fully discharge and fully charge the batteries each time... this is no longer the case with newer battery technologies. The older batteries would exhibit what was called a "memory effect". If you regularly only used half the capacity... it would eventually only hold half the capacity. This is just one of those things that has been handed down from the good old battery days and doesn't seem to want to go way.

  • I need to know best way to edit MXF files, with least rendering, is that converting the MXF or Log and Transfer? the end product is dvd, but I have lots and lots of these projects to do.

I am about to comence my Edit, and was told of Mpeg Streamclip, however this doesn't seem to work with my Canon XF305 Clips, the reason I was told to use it was so I wouldn't have to Render in Final Cut Pro all the time.. I do have the Canon Disc with the Plug in Utility and the update from their site.
Is it best to Convert these MXF files first and import them into FCP or use 'Log and Transfer', so far I am unable to do either!!
The projects on the timeline will have introduction .Movs already on it as a Template to re-use again and again with the new Footage ( MXF Files ) to be added and edited with transitions etc..This process is repeated again and again but with different MXF clips each time.
I am looking for the quickest and best way for workflow as there are 80 or more projects to do, each with 10 or so clips to be added to the timeline and Exported for DVD...Will I have to then Compress to fit onto DVD's??
I know Streamclip is an Mepeg 2 app but I thought the Canon XF305 Shot as mpeg2....
Is Log and Transfer my only Option?
Basically I need to know the quickest for Render purposes, and of course, the best way so the files aren't so huge etc etc.
Please, any suggestions would be greatly received....

We only work with PR422 files in FC7.  We use Shane's workflow with all 5D & MXF footage.
Make your life easier and stick to the ProRes family for your footage and edit sequences. Avoid H264 & convert any you have to ProRes.
Unless you are considering Blu-Ray the only way to deliver video on a DVD is to convert it to SD.
Depending on the length of your show you can make a Blu-Ray in Compressor but you have very limited authoring options when compared to DVD Studio Pro.
Compressor can also convert your HD to SD mpg-2 & Ac3 files. The best results usually come from setting the frame controls in the mpg-2 setting of Compressor to best. Depending on the the length of the show and your Qmaster settings this can take quite a while.
I personally find Compressor's HD to SD DVD conversion varies. Sometimes it is wonderful and sometimes not so much. I prefer the following as it is usually is faster and very consistent.
Export a quicktime movie (not QT conversion) of your final sequence
Import the exported HD file back into FC.
Create a SD 16x9 sequence and then drop in the recently exported HD seq and render. Rendering the sequence basically has FC doing the HD to SD conversion. Export the SD sequence and then convert to mpg-2 & ac3 in Compressor. While this does take time I still find it faster than Compressor with Qmaster utilizing all cores.
Another option is using jobs in Compressor
    http://pixelcorps.cachefly.net/macbreak-154-540p-h264.mov
In this workflow you would have Compressor convert the HD file to SD and then through jobs convert the SD file to mpg2 & Ac3.
In theory the jobs version could be faster (based on a number of variables- length, Qmaster, etc) but I haven't had time to compare the two.

  • Best way to upgrade?

    Hi all-
I've drooled over the features of iphoto 09 for sometime now, and I've just purchased the iLife 09 disk. I'm ready to install, but first a couple of questions:
    1. What is the safest and best way to upgrade? Is it as simple as inserting the disk, following the prompts, opening iPhoto '09 once installed and pointing it at my '08 library? I keep my library on an external disk, attached to my 2TB TC.
    2. Is it better to do a clean install of iLife 09, rather than write over the old?
    3. Any words of wisdom to help preserve the intricacies of my '08 library (all the tags, events, etc) so I don't accidentally eliminate them in the transition?
    Many thanks-

Larry - I found this post in searing for the exact thing.."best way to upgrade" from '08 to '09 iPhoto/iLife. I've owned it for months now and due to procrastination and not knowing how to properly back up my iPhoto library (shame on me...1 yr worth of photos backed up automatically on my TC - I hope at least - but not backed up any other way). I'd like to finally do the upgrade since I own 09 iLife but am too nervous to do anything since I don't know if my time capsule is really backing up all my photos saved on this laptop since I bought it 1/09. I've been meaning to just burn all my iPhoto pics onto DVDs for safe keeping and do it monthly so that any new photos just get burned onto a new disk, but is there another way to back up my iPhoto library onto my external drive (where I keep all my HD videos)? If I back it up periodically onto my external hard drive, does it just update those pictures I've added/changed or does it save a new copy of my iPhoto library EVERY time I backup? I would think that would take up so much memory. I don't know how to do it or where to start, other than to just make lots of DVD backups. Any step by step advice would be GREATLY appreciated!!
