BI Reporting Tools - Which one to prefer ?

We have many number of use Oracle Financials users and we do have exposure to all BI reporting tools, in addition to OFA. We are finding it dfficult to understant which tool would be the best to use in different situatoin. As we have Discoverer, DBI, OFA, ADI - It is confusing which tool to prefer in the first point, while creating reports. Also as we are in the developing end, we find it difficult to tell poeple that this tool would be the best for this sitation, as the same report could also be generated from other reporting tools.
Could anyone tell me where I can find documentation that would help us to identify the right tools for the right situation?
Many thanks.

For actual reporting tools, the standard Oracle Reports is of course popular as it comes with Oracle Apps predefined reports.
However, Discoverer is popular as it allows 'ad-hoc' reporting (which is another whole story in that do you want end users to perform ad-hoc querying) and its a tool that under 10g r2 has really come together.
XML Publisher is definitely something that Oracle is pushing more - and supposedly a some time in the long future replacement for Reports (so I've heard but who knows if the source is correct).
If you're referring to relational table tools, then the biggies are Oracle Discoverer, Cognos Impromptu, Business Objects, Brio, etc. However some have been bought out in recent past (ie: Brio). They all use a middle layer (ie: EUL, catalog, universe) and all have strengths and weaknesses. It's usually a safe argument to use the Oracle tool (if you can wait for it to catch up to competitors) as Oracle tools are usually tightly aligned with Oracle database, Apps, etc. But if you want more disparate sources to use the tool with, then Oracle tools (ie: Discoverer) may not always be the best one to use.
For OLAP reporting, the big boy is Hyperion (but at a considerable cost). Now, however Oracle is really trying to kill these other tools (sorry ... compete with), with the 10g database that supports relational and OLAP in the same database and their query tools (ie: Disco Plus 10g r2) that can access both / either.
So, it's one of those questions that always comes around again. Of course, General Motors is better than Ford, right? Same argument, but I've found that a company hanging it's hat on Oracle tools in an Oracle environment (database) and especially in an Oracle Apps shop (Enterprise Suite), usually is happy. Not always happy at the current version, but Oracle with it's humungous amount of money and resources, usually either gets their tool up to their competitor's level - or buys them out!

  • Oracle Portal, Application Express, Oracle Forms/Reports 10g - which one?

    Hi,
I have Oracle 10g database and Application Express installed on one linux box.
second linux box has Oracle HTTP server running from where i call the htmldb pages.
3rd linux box has Oracle Application Server 10.1.2 installed along with SSO, Portal 10.1.4 , Forms Server etc.
Now, i see there are 3 ways i can develop web applications
    1. using Application Express and http server which is very basic and simple.
    2. using Oracle Forms/Reports 10g and forms/reports server
    3. Oracle Portal 10.1.4 in Application Server 10.1.2
Can someone guide me, which one of the above 3 is worth sticking on forever for developing web applications. i am really not sure which one of the above is best for Web developement in terms of long term planning. and i believe all 3 of the above can be integrated with Oracle SSO for authentication.
Can someone guide me please to select one of the above and can you explain me why for my better understanding of the different tools?
    Thanks,
    Philip.

    Hi Philip.
If you already have Oracle Portal, I think that portal is the best solution.
Portal can be integrated with others applications using SSO.
Oracle portal have a lot of features that help you to develop web applications.
If portal does not offer what you want, you can develop your own portlets using java or plsql.
Take a look at the default home page of oracle portal.
Look better the features that portal offer to you.

    Thanks.

  • [solved]Good password management tool - which one?

    Hello guys,
I want to store my passwords  in an encrypted file which I can use on different plattforms (if not existent yet, only for linux OSs.) Most of you guys know truecrypt. A truecrypt file can be used on any plattforms where truecrypt is useable. Just like this, I would like to ask you guys which tools you use for managing your passwords. For me, it should be something which can be used on different plattforms. For example (most of them are not cross-plattform), there are many tools like seahorse, pwmanager, pwsafe, keysafe, keepassx, etc...
Which tools do you guys use? Do you guys know any of the tools whose source code is already reviewed and confirmed as the most secure or "the state of the art" tool for managing passwords? It would be also nice if the crypto pass generation feature is already included in that tool.
    Security matters!

A couple of years ago, I found these two scripts on the net somewhere and have been quite pleased.  "apass" opens the password file for adding.  It takes no parameters.  "gpass" searches the file for a password.  It takes the string you're looking for as a parameter.
You will be prompted for a password to open the password file in each case. "apass" will ask you to set a password when you close the file.
    First "apass":
    #!/bin/bash
    # name: apass
    # usage "apass" - no parameters
    ccdecrypt ~/.ssh/.pw1.txt.cpt
    nano ~/.ssh/.pw1.txt
    ccencrypt ~/.ssh/.pw1.txt
    And "gpass":
    #!/bin/bash
    # greps encrypted password file for passwords
    test -n "$1" && ccat ~/.ssh/.pw1.txt.cpt | grep $1 $2 $3
I like these guys because they're lightening fast and easily portable.
I've adopted the convention of entering all searchable strings, not passwords, in lowercase but that's entirely up to you.
Of course, change the editor to whatever command line editor you prefer.

  • STP vs. Ether Channel ; Which one is prefer?

Is Ether Channel an always prefer method comparing to STP? Why? Is there any scenario to use STP better than Ether Channel?

    Hi,
Simply put Ether Channel is the technology to combine exisiting Ethernet links and achieving higher bandwidth which is otherwise restricted cause of Layer 2 limitation e.g. can you achieve 4 Gbps bandwidth using GBIC modules/interfaces? The ans is NO. In that case, Etherchannel will bundle all the four inidividual interfaces/GBICs and give you a bandwidth of 4 Gbps.
STP, on the other hand is a technology that will enable you to give a Fault-Tolerant situation when in a Looped environment.

  • Which one? Crystal Reports or BO

    Hello friends,
I've a basic question. I'm new in this area.
I've BI implemented in my company and till date we had been using BeX for Reporting purpose.
Now, I would like to know which tool would be the right one for Reporting purposes.
    Crystal Reports OR BO?
What is the difference between the two?
IS Crystal Reports stand alone Tool provided by SAP? What is the relationship between BI, CR and BO?

    Hi
what are exactly your requirements for reporting?
Crystal Reports is a very powerful reporting tool which allows to build pixel-accurate, highly formatted reports  but with rather limited user interaction capabilities (standard reporting). The designer tool is indeed a stand-alone tool but the reports can be viewed over a web browser. The integration with SAP BW allows to invoke reports even from within SAP GUI or SAP Portal (EP or KMC)  and facilitates personalized report bursting.
BusinessObjects Web Intelligence is an intuitive ad-hoc reporting tool with advanced graphical capabilities and allows the user to view/build reports on the web browser. The reports can also be invoked from an SAP Enterprise or KM Portal.
In both cases you require a BusinessObjects Enterprise (or Edge) server installation.
I would suggest to take a look here:

  • Comparison in reporting tools

    Hi All,
I have a question, that whenever we are presented with a requirement document to develop a report, how can we determine which is the best reporting tool which can be used.
    Regards,
    Ankur

    Hi,
'each worksheet essentially creates and runs a single SQL statement 'A Discoverer workbook is like an Excel and is made up of a number of worksheets. When the user runs a worksheet Discoverer builds an SQL statement and sends this to the database. The results returned from the database are then displayed. Each worksheet can run a single SQL statement so you cannot have separate SQL for example, for header and body, you must combine all the data you want in the worksheet into a single query.
'With Reports 6i each report can run many SQL Statements and the results can be formated in anyway you like'.In Reports 6i you can create many queries within a report, so for example you can have master and detail queries. So can use the master query to display the header records and the detail query for the records under the heading. You can layout and format the results on page anyway you want, so for example, so can format one field based on the content in another field.
Is it somehow performance based difference also? Both the tools run SQL in the database, so if the SQL is the same then you will get much the same performance. If the data returned in Discoverer workbook is the same as the data in the Reports 6i report then they can use the same SQL, so you won't see any performance difference.

  • Reporting Tools

I'm relatively new to BW...I've been supporting it internally for our company for the last year+, but I come from a .NET background.  My questions are in regards to the reporting tools that people use at different implementations.  We use the BEx Analyzer with BW 3.5, but have been relatively disappointed with the user interface and the performance of the queries.  We'll be upgrading to Netweaver BI after the first of the year.
    1.  What other reporting tools (3rd party, web tools, etc.) have people used and how have they performed with BW/BI?
    2.  How much of an improvement, either in performance or the user interface, is there with the upgrade to BI?
    I appreciate any help.
    Thanks,
    Tony

    1. There are few third party reporting tools you can integrate with BW data like Business Object, Cognos Reporting sofware, Hyperion etc. All are pretty good.
    2. If you are upgrading to BI 7.0, there are lots of new features added to BW/BI reporting tools and one new tool added is Report Designer.
If you are really upgrading to BI 7.0, I don't think you need any third party tools but again it depends on totally what tool you are comfortable with.

    Ashok

  • BW (BEx) and BOBJ Reporting-Tools

    Hi All,
I'm looking for an article or anything, that describes the difference between SAP BW (BEx) and Business Objects- Reporting tools .
which tools is suitable for what purpose?
    thanks
    brad

This isn't mine - it may even be yours - but just in case anyone looks at this thread, here it is
    BO vs BEx
    Ease of use:
BO - Very user friendly interface, Minimal requirement for MDX code, Some queries take more time in BO analysis, when compared to BEx Analyzer
BEx - Difficult self service reporting and analytics, Being Excel based, it needs extensive VBA or Macro programming for a great UI
    Features:
BO - Export functionality (PDF, MSOffice etc), More chart types, Has more advanced features, Design and Preview Tab in the same page, Provides offline capabilities
BEx - Is mostly for SAP only but With integration can access BEx query from BO, Web App Designer is effort intensive, Build and preview are separate views
    Support from SAP:
BO - Part of SAP integration roadmap, All current and future dev. in the BI front-end is focused on the SAP BO BI solutions, Crystal Reports is now main reporting tool, replacing BEx Report Designer
BEx - BEx is no longer the strategic direction, BEx product line will be phased out completely by 2016
    Compatibility with other data source:
BO - Able to merge data from various sources in the same report, Can connect to any Database, very flexible in design
BEx - Gets data from BI
    Implementation effort and ownership cost:
BO - Longer deployment period compared to BEx, Additional server needed, May require additional components setup for BW, May need separate license for Business Objects Enterprise (BOE) platform, BO uses OLEDB for OLAP API via BEx query, may cause an overhead, BW Accelerator may be needed to improve query response time, scalability and visibility.
BEx - Only MS office and BEx client are needed for installation, BEx is bundled with NetWeaver

  • In bdc sessoin method which one is preferred synchronous or asynchronous..?

    hi could anybody tel me
sessoin method which one is preferred synchronous or asynchronous..?

foreground or background which one ll prefer..?

    kals.

    Dear Kals,
    Synchronous or Asynchronous:
If you need to process dependent transactions one after the other go for synchronous. Else, go for asynchronous.
    Asynchronous will have better performance.
    Ex:
If you would like to process F.02. If it is successful process one more transaction using.
    Go for synchronous
    call transaction F.02 ........
    if successful.
       process one more dependent transaction.
    endif.
If you just need to process F.02
    Go for Asynchronous.
    Background or Foreground:
If there is a huge volume of data or no manual intevention is needed for background. If you would need manual intervention go for foreground.
Performance would be better in Background.

  • WHICH ONE? BLACK? WHITE? HELP!!!!!!

I am going to get an iphone shortly and wish to know whioch one to have.
Ok simple as i want to know which one people prefer. The White or the black 3g iphone. Storage is irrelevant. How about scratches, marks, fingerprints etc.
    Thanks
    Scott

As I'm sure everyone will tell you, it's a matter of personal taste and preference and you will know which is the right one for you when you see them in the flesh. I spent 5 weeks in Australia in the summer and the 3G was launched when I was away. I looked at both models in Oz and thought I would update to the white one when I got back, but found, of course, that only the black model was available as an upgrade at that point. So I bought the black model and played with it for a couple of days before deciding that I didn't like it. It shows off every single fingerprint on the back casing and, for me, looked a bit cheap. So I went to the Glasgow Apple Store (only one in all of Scotland!) and took out a new contract so I could get the white model. I've never looked back! I swapped SIM cards between the phones and sold the black one for enough money to cover the cost of the handset and the 18 month contract. I've since compared my phone to those of friends who have the black one, and mine still looks in the best condition all things considered. This is of course simply my opinion, but there is something a wee bit more 'Apple' about the white phone, as it is the colour used for so many pieces of hardware that they have produced. But you'll know the right one for you when you pick them up! Enjoy it when you get it - simply the most amazing piece of kit!!

  • SAP Business One  Reporting tools

Which is the best reporting tool suitable for SAP Business One?

It depends on what you are looking for, there is no one tools that satisfy all.
Personally, I prefer Crystal report and queries.  PLD is not preferred due to its limitation in formatting and adding additional fields.
XL reports works extremely well if you are like excel and you are happy with writing reports based on existing fields avaiable as yo have no control on that.

  • Which reporting tool should we use for SAP-BI?

Hello - I was wondering which reporting tool would SAP currently recommended for reporting out of SAP-BI?  For instance, which specific versions etc., of Business Objects or BEx is the best choice considering the subsistence of Business Objects and BEx (i.e. which one will remain in existence?).
