Big Brother (MicroSoft) Shutting Down My Service

Because we don't upgrade to the newest viersion of their Skype Software they have stoped us from using their service! Really? If I don't upgrade my X-Box will it shut down? If you dont upgrade your Windows Machine will it Quit?

Looking for other options out there, any suggestions

I agree with you 100 percent.  SKYPE (Microsoft) has blocked my account because I refused to renew a subscription. I have been a SKYPE user since 2007 but now I'm going to quit SKYPE because Microsoft is impossible to work with.
That doesn't make sense.  If you canceled your subscription you don't get punished for it.  If however you didn't take the time to cancel your subscription and instead decided to perform a stop payment on a subscription invalidating your form of payment, then I can see that happening.

We're setting up a public facing server for Profile Manager use only. Profile Manager uses the following ports:

    1) Can this be done given what we're trying to do (iOS Policy Management via Profile Manager only).
    2) What are the Terminal Commands for toggling these ports on and off for testing?
    3) Is it better to shut down associated services rather than the ports assuming some ports might be shared?

    Unable to connect to opmn.
Opmn may not be up.it means OPMN is already down. You can do
opmnctl status to check status of components.
if all are down then you are good to move on to next step.

IvanEssbase will not unload the application (or database) if there is currently a calculation or dataload in progress. Has some user fired off a calculation (from the Excel addin perhaps) or do you still have a calculation still running in AAS as a background process (which doesn't require the AAS console to remain up)?
It may also be helpful to know what application is running in the specific esssvr.exe process instance. Essbase creates a process in a new PID for each application started. You can find out which application belongs to that PID by searching through the essbase log.
Here's a simple DOS batch file that I use when I suspect that I have a runaway calc and need to know which application is running it. Use the Windows Task Manager to discover the PID for the esssvr.exe process in question and pass it in as a parameter to this batch file.

  • Why do memory issues shut down iCloud services.

After playing a game or using an application that taxes memory, I often find that an iCoud service (usually Find My iThing, but not always) is shut off.
This really concerns me because if I forget to check/turn iCloud back on and then lose my iThing, it will not be able to be found (by me) and I assume whoever DOES find it can now reactivate without a password because Find my iThing is alread off.
Has anyone else had this issue and how did you fix it?

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

Thanks for replying, Dave. I think we might be running into bug CSCtx54519. Upgrading to version 8.5(1)SR0(10) or higher would fix the issue. We are already planning to upgrade to version 9 so I will update once we do that in January 2014.

  • How to test Windows 2012 R2 DHCP Failover without shutting down the service?

How can I test the Win2012R2 DHCP Failover?
There is a command or script, that i could use to test if DHCP failover is working properly?
How to monitor the sync of the objects?
How to make sure that it will do the job, if required?
Or i have to really stop DHCP server main server and see the failover?

    Hello,
you have to keep in mind that this has ONLY effect for machines that request during the downtime a lease. So if your lease time is for example 8 hours a computer will ask after 4 hours for the renewal of the lease.
Means there is no problem for running machines during the test. You just need a computer to start after the service is shutdown on the first DHCP server, should take only some minutes to check if the fail over works. Then you could already start the service
again if you see the lease on the new server.

  • Failover cluster not cleanly shutting down service

I've got a two node 2008 R2 failover cluster.  I have a single service being managed by it that I configured just as a generic service.  The failover works perfectly when the service is stopped, or when one of the machines goes down, and the immediate
failback I have configured works perfectly in both scenarios as well.
However, there's an issue when I take the networking down on the preferred owner of the service.  As far as I can tell (this is the first time I've tried failover clustering, so I'm learning), when I take the networking down, the cluster service shuts
down, and in turn shuts down the service I've told it to manage.  At this point, when the services aren't running, the service fails over to the secondary as intended.  The problem shows up when I turn the networking back on.  The service tries
and fails to start on the primary (as many times as I've configured it to try), and then eventually gives up and goes back to the secondary.
The reason for this, examining logs for the service, is that the required port is already in use.  I checked some more, and sure enough, when I take the networking offline the service gets shut down, but the executable is still running.  This is
repeatable every time.  When I just stop the service, though, the executables go away.  So it's something to do specifically with how the managed service gets shut down *when it's shut down due to the cluster service stopping*.  For some reason
it's not cleaning up that associated executable.
Any ideas as to why this is happening and how to fix/work around it would be extremely welcome.  Thank you!

Try to generate cluster log using closter log /g /copy:<path to a local folder>. You might need to bump up log verbosity using cluster /prop ClusterLogLevel=5 (you can check current level using cluster /prop).
You also can look at the SCM diagnostic channel in the event viewer. Start eventvwr. Wait for the clock icon on the Application and Services Logs to go away. Once the clock icon is gone select this entry and in the menu check Show Analytic and Debug Logs.
Now expand to the SCM provider located at
Application and Services Logs\Microsoft\Service Control Manager Performance Diagnostic Provider\Diagnostic.
    or Microsoft-Windows-Services/Diagnostic
Enable the log, run repro, disable the log. After that you should see events from the SCM showing you your service state transitions.
The terminate parameters do not seems to be configurable. I can think of two ways fixing the issue
    - Writing your own cluster resource DLL where you can implement your own policies. THis would be a place to start http://blogs.msdn.com/b/clustering/archive/2010/08/24/10053405.aspx.
    - This option is assuming you cannot change the source code of the service to kill orphaned child processes on startup so you have to clenup using some other means. Create another service and make your service dependent on this new service. This new serice
must be much faster in responding do the SCM commands. On start of this service you using PSAPI enumirate all processes running on the machine and kill the orphaned child processes. You probably should be able to acheve something similar using GenScript resource
+ VB script that does the cleanup.

  • Verizon Shutting Rural DSL Services Down--FCC Complaints

I have a home in the rural high-desert area of California. The DSL offered was old Fujitsu frame-relay equipment. The equipment is failing and Verizon does’ not plan on repairing, replacing, or upgrading the equipment. So hundreds of people in the area are losing service. This shut down is an extremely difficult situation for those residents who have depended on the DSL service while working from home.
I know for a fact that the Fujitsu frame relay equipment is being used in other parts of the country, so does the FCC, yet they are telling me it’s not available! How much does it really cost Verizon to ship some of the unused equipment from one part of the country of the other, not much! After 7 years of service, and thousands of dollars spent on my part verizon just decides to end my service and that of hundreds of other customers so they can avoid spending perhaps a couple of thousand dollars--just so a high level manager can look good keeping their department under budget!
There are no other services available for the area. Dealing with the extremely poor Verizon customer service phone technicians has been exceptionally difficult. None of Verizon’s departments seem to be in communication with one another. The old Fujitsu frame-relay equipment requires a Fujitsu modem; I cannot begin to count the number of times the Philippine, India, and even so-called higher level technicians in the United States have tried to tell me I am using the wrong modem. A new modem even showed up in the mail last week!  I have spent hours on the phone trying to resolve this problem, which usually starts with a long revolving series prompts, then a technician telling me we need to reboot the modem, and then hours of them trying to tell me it’s the wrong modem. I do not see how such a large company can allow such poor and low quality service to happen. With land-line phone service on the way out, I would think they would reconsider their poor customer service tactics to retain customers.
I will be filing two complaints, one with the Better Business Bureau and one with the FCC for not delivering services as promised and shutting down the service with notice or attempting to repair it. I am curious, how has the BBB and FCC helped resolve their Verizon service issues?

Our community of Landers and Flamingo Heights in California has completely lost Verizon broadband service, the community was serviced by older Fujitsu frame relay equipment. Losing the service wouldn’t matter so much, but for some of us there are no alternative services available. I have never been told in an official communication or letter that once the Fujitsu equipment goes bad Verizon will no longer offer broadband service in the area. Verizon just let the equipment go bad and waited for us to call in. This maneuver by Verizon leaves hundreds of customers without broadband. We are stunned that Verizon would just stop the service we depend on-the families that work from home and need broadband to make a living, the children who depend on the internet for their education, and the senior citizens you use email to communicate with their families. Do these people not matter?
We can only assume this is a cost effective money saving tactic for Verizon, but what’s amazing is how Verizon claims to support small communities and children through millions of dollars in philanthropic donations. Just one child matters, and there are numerous children in this area! Their political contributions are even more staggering, which total millions of dollars. You can see how much Verizon would rather support a politician who may or may not win than stand behind the current customers. In addition to millions spent on sporting events, stadiums, and corporate executive perks. To move one piece of equipment from one part of the country to another costs little in comparison. This goes against the Verizon credo and broadband commitment.

“We are pleased to share our Code of Conduct (2.21 MB .pdf) to let our customers and business partners know that integrity and respect serve as the overarching principles for how Verizon conducts its business. Our goal is to be the most respected brand in communications by making and keeping promises to our customers, our communities, our shareholders, and our employees. The Verizon Commitment and Values, along with our Credo, which appear on the inside cover of our Code of Conduct, highlights these commitments.”
My ultimate goal is to have our old copper-wire broadband service restored—upgrading to FIOS would be nice, but it’s not a necessity and not the end result we are looking for. It seems me that Verizon would stand behind their customers and continue offer them service, especially in these tough economic times. I am speaking for all the elderly citizens who can no longer communicate and enjoy email from family, the people who can no longer work from home, and the children who can no longer supplement their education through research on the internet in this area.
If you have lost your broadband service in the area and would like to get it back, please contact Verizon and voice your concern. Other alternatives are filling a BBB and FCC compliant, because Verizon has not stood behind the service they had promised us when we signed up for it. Please do not cancel your broadband service as Verizon representatives are requesting. Verizon will never give broadband back to you and they will not resolve the problem if everyone is cancelled, simply request a credit through billing.

  • MS Office Products Shut Down after Installation of SP1

I initially could not install SP1 until I completely uninstalled my anti virus software.  I run Vista Home Premium on a DELL XPS M1530.  I have a cable connection though Charter and they provide a no charge subscription to their "Charter Security Suite" by F-Secure.  All 4 of the computers run the same security software and this was the first time I encountered a problem of this nature.
After SP1 installed, I downloaded and re-installed Charter Security Suite.  From that point on, I had problems with all of the MS office products, Word, Excel, Power Point and Access.  After closing any of these programs, I would get the following error messages:
    a.       “Windows Office Word [or Excel or PP or Access] has stopped working.  Windows is checking for a solution”
    b.      “Windows is attempting to recover your information”
    c.       “Windows is restarting”
    d.      “Windows Office Word [or Excel or PP or Access] has stopped working.  A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available.”
With the help of a Microsoft Technician, I shut down all Services and Start Up items in MSCONFIG.  The problem disappeared.  Only after restarting the Charter Security Suite by F-Secure did the problem reoccur.  I uninstalled the security suite again and now all MS Office programs run smoothly.
Now all I have to find is a good replacement security software package to replace the F-Secure.
By the way, the people at Charter could care less about the problem.  They even told me to google free security software and install whatever I wanted.  I thanked them and hung up.

  • Shutting down the database in Windows...

I just read that shutting down the database by directly stopping the Oracle Service (instead of using the shutdown command from sqlplus) will abruptly stop your database, and the database will have to perform an instance recovery upon restarting.
This hasn't been my experience at all. I was under the impression shutting down the service was equal to a shutdown immediate.
    Any comments?

They will perform the same operation. You can do a test and prove it to your colleague.

  • Exchange access with Visto shutting down

I've been a VistoMobile user since trialing my first gen iPhone last year. I recently added another couple of iPhone users in my group and was surprised to find that Visto is shutting down it's iPhone support as of 11/1/08 due to lower than expected sales.
I don't know how many of you are in the same boat as I am, but it's not looking good for iPhone futures at my PoE. We are a BES only mobile email structure and Visto was the only available alternative that I know of as our OWA is configured to run through VPN only. IT will not setup ActiveSync or normal OWA.
Does anybody have a line on an alternative product that we can take a look at?
    Any info is appreciated.

WOW...no wonder Visto is shutting down this service. Not another Visto user on this entire site.
I'm amazed that there aren't more Visto users what with the dominance of BES over ActiveSync in the marketplace for corporate Push email solutions and the normal reluctance of IT Admins to offer redundant services.
Unfortunately in my case this will likely result in the early demise of the group iPhone experiment as there isn't another solution that I can find which can be user initiated/supported without the "intervention and backing" of IT.
    Oh well...

  • Cannot shut down

I just purchased my imac last week. I am trying to shut down my computer so I can go to sleep.  Everytime I try to shut it down a window pops up and it reads "can not shut down programs are still operating go to finder."  I have no idea how to fix this so I can shut down my mac can you please help me??

There is a big difference between shutting down your iMac which requires that all applications be quit, and sleeping your computer which keeps everything in its current state with the display off and the rest of the circuitry in power saving mode.
Is there a reason you are trying to shut the system down completely instead of putting it to sleep? If you select shutdown and the system is giving you that prompt the system is indicating that there are applications open that have unsaved documents or open dialog boxes that need attention.
Since you indicated that you bought your iMac last week I am assuming that you are running Mac OS X Lion (10.7.x). If you look at the dock screenshot below some of the applications have a glowing dot below their icon. The dots indicate that the application is open. If you selected shutdown and were not successful just click on the icons with the dots and you'll be able to see whether you have an application that needs attention. My personal recommendation is to just put the iMac to sleep so that when you wake up your computer will be ready for your right where you left off simply by pressing a key on the keyboard.

  • The Cluster service is shutting down because quorum was lost

Hi, we recently experienced the above issue and after looking for explanations I haven't been able to find any satisfying answers when other people have posted this issue.
    Our problem is as follows:
    2 node 2008R2 cluster running SQL 2012
Each node is a HP BL460c running in a HP C7000 Blade Chassis.
We were updating the flexfabric cards on one of the chassis.  The other chassis had been patched the previous week with no problems.
During the update process the flexfabric cards, which hold the Ethernet and FC connections, reboot so before work had begun all active cluster services had been failed over to the node in the chassis not being worked on.  However despite this the cluster
service shut down on this one particular cluster.  All other clusters running across these 2 chassis continued to run as expected.
As other people have posted before we saw the following errors in the system log.
1564: File share witness resource 'File Share Witness' failed to arbitrate for the file share
1069: Cluster resource 'File Share Witness' in clustered service or application 'Cluster Group' failed.
1172: The Cluster service is shutting down because quorum was lost. This could be due to the loss of network connectivity between some or all nodes in the cluster, or a failover of the witness disk.
Run the Validate a Configuration wizard to check your network configuration. If the condition persists, check for hardware or software errors related to the network adapter. Also check for failures in any other network components to which the node is connected
such as hubs, switches, or bridges.
However we cant understand what could cause this to happen when the service is running on the node in the chassis not being updated, especially when the same update was performed the week before with no issues.  How can both nodes lose connectivity
to the File Share Witness at the same time?
Cluster Validation tests run fine and don't highlight any issues.  The file share witness is accessible from both servers.

    Hi,
Please confirm you have install the Recommended hotfixes and updates for Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 Failover Clusters update, especially the following hotfix.
The network location profile changes from "Domain" to "Public" in Windows 7 or in Windows Server 2008 R2

A hotfix is available that adds two new cluster control codes to help you determine which cluster node is blocking a GUM update in Windows Server 2008 R2 and Windows Server
    2012
