BIOS doesn't show SATA Drive as Boot Sequence option

Hi,
I recently bought an MSI MEGA 865 Pro, and can't get the SATA hard drive to work (Western Digital Caviar 400GB)
When it boots up, it auto-detects an 'IDE Hard Disk' as Primary on IDE Channel 3, but when I go into the BIOS setup, the only Boot Sequence options I get are Disabled and my DVD Writer.
In On-Chip IDE Configuration, I've got P-ATA Channel Selection set to Both and On-Chip Serial ATA set to Native Mode. These, and also Combined Mode Option, are the only options I have, and I've tried changing them with no result.
When I try to install Windows, or use the Western Digital Tools for setting up the HD, they both say there's no hard drive.
I've tried it in my Shuttle, and it finds it fine. I used it to write a disk signature, and set up partitions, leaving some space free for InstantOn. Put it back into the MSI, .. same thing.
My AMI BIOS is at version 1.0 at the moment, and I'm going to try to upgrade it to 1.1 tonight. According to MSI's website, it fixes a restart issue with EM64T processors, which I have, but I'm not sure if it's going to fix the HD.
Is there anything else I can try?

I've just tried something which helps a little.
If I reset CMOS by shorting pins 2-3 on the JBAT1 jumper on the motherboard, when I turn the PC on it works, and complains about CMOS settings. In the BIOS this time the HDD is recognized, and everything seems OK. But .. after a reboot I get the same problems again.
Also, I've tried creating a bootable CD with the BIOS files on it, but when I try to upgrade the BIOS, it just comes up with the usage instructions like I did something wrong. I am typing 'ADSFI718 A7122IMS.110 <enter>'.
Please help.

  • Configuration in BIOS doesn't show CDRom Drive

I'm just checking out a used T41, 2373-4JU, and I do not see the CDRom Drive listed in my configuration list in BIOS.  Is this because the Drive is connected to the USB circuit?
However, the drive appears in the sequence for booting devices (F12 button), where it is distinguished from other USB devices.
I'm a novice, and would be thankful for any and all help from charitable souls.
I have some other fears and ignorances about this computer.  I want to put my old HDD from a dead A20m into an adapter for the 2000 Bay and boot up from there, but I do not know if the W98SE on that old HDD will do some damage to the XP Pro system that is installed on the regular HDD of the computer.  Will the two harddrives be kept completely apart?

    George,
    Many thanks for responding.
I've ordered an adapter of the slim version, so things should be ok.
However, it problem with the cd-rom is not so ok.  the drive is a toshiba SD-R9012.  It is supposed to be cd-rom r/rw and dvd combo drive.  In Device Manager it appears listed simply as a dvd-rom drive.  Device Manager says it is operating fine, but it is not.  It reads cd-romsand it accesses cd-audios and plays them, but it does not recognize blank cd-rom/r or cd-rom/rw disks and it does not recognize dvd-video disks, "unknown medium".  This non-recognition is true in Windows Media 11, Cyberlink PowerDVD5, and Nero6.
I uninstalled and reinstalled the driver, but the only driver in the XP Pro fines seems to date from 2001.  I cannot find an updated driver from Toshiba or Lenovo, but perhaps I've not looked hard enough.  The auto search function on XP also did not find anything newer.  But this did not help.
What is odd also is that the Backup Wizard only talks about making a bootable floppy (which this machine does not have) and aborts if I try to write the files to the cd-rom device.
So, I accessed the BIOS menus, and there with the F12 key listing of booting devices, I found the Toshiba drive properly listed in the sequence of booting devices, but when I went into the Configure menu, where I expected gto find all the hardware options listed, I did not find any cd-rom drive listed.  A floppy disk was listed and disabled, the harddrive was listed an enabled, etc. but no mention of any type of cd-rom or dvd-rom.  I thought that might be because that drive is in the ultra Bay and the ultra Bay was connected to the machine through a standard USB connection.
Anyway, in point of fact, I've got no way to make a booting disk or to backup files.
    thanks, again,
    Wodeming

  • Z97 Gaming 7 - bios 1.6 , random SATA drives disappearing

Hello, today I updated the bios from version 1.5 to 1.6.
There is a problem, when i reboot the system, displays the message no drive to boot the system.
I have  3 drives, intel sad 520 with system, samsung ssd 840 evo and one normal hdd. Boot order, have changed, so i recover correct order and after the next reboot bios lost this settings. After several reboots, bios lost both SSD's and shows only question marks .
I disconnected all SATA drives, plugged in again, loaded the default settings, after that all disks get back but i lost my dvd-rom, bios also shows question marks. So i think its a random issue.
I switched mono to second bios (1.3) and all works fine, with 1.5 also was fine.
Is this a bug of the new BIOS or i've made something wrong?
BIOS 1.5 from the support site (no matter eu or global) won't run on Windows 8.1. the file downloaded by msi live update runs normally. Can somebody help and share BIOS 1.5 installer?
    Regards
    (sorry for my poor English)

    1. Could you state clearly what is the original boot sequence of your HDD shown in the bios?
you mentioned that after you reset from Windows or from DOS then the sequence will changed??   how often will this symptoms happened.
    2. If you only use the Intel SSD 520 + the Normal HDD (remove DVD and the Samsung SSD) , will you see the boot sequence lost issue?
    3. What do you mean by the below??  you can't flash bios 1.5 in DOS mode???  please help explain in details

    Orginal boot sequence:
    1: SSD Intel 520 (system)
    2: SSD Samsung 840
    3: HDD
Mobo was traing to set Samsung at first place, but after disconnecting this drive, it put HDD on fist place. So i disconnected all other drives, and mobo shows only question marks in Intel SSD field.
I never had any problems with this intel SSD, it works perfect, samsung behaves the same way, it disappears randomly.
Sometimes all works correct, some times some drive is missing, it does not matter the restart is made on windows, dos, or on bios. Totally random.
When i switch to second bios (1.3) all works fine, only on 1.6 freaking out.
When i what start bios package from msi-support site windows shows "this app. can't be run on this system", thats all (there are 3 files i archive). File downloaded by msi-update starts normally (and this is only one exe file), unzip and run dos-mode update.  Unfortunately, I removed the file with 1.5 downloaded by msi live update.
Maybe the bios package is dedicated to installing from usb-drive through m-flash ?
And on the windows can update only through msi-live update? I really do not know, I'm confused.

  • Bios settings for single SATA Drive Help

I have just installed a 945P Platnium mother board with a Pentium 4 3.4 extreme with HT tech.
I have 2 GB of memory, nvidia 1 gb video 9800 GT, I have 2 IDE hard drives: WD 320 GB(C:) and WD 120 GB (E:) and a CD/DVD drive (F:). I installed a WD 500 GB SATA drive on SATA 1 and the two IDE hard drives on IDE 1 on the same cable with the 320 GB as master and the 120 GB as slave. The CD is on IDE channel 2 as the master.  I have cloned the IDE 320 (c:) to the 500 GB Sata which is now the boot drive (c:).
I have been able to boot the computer but the CD/DVD drive doesn't show. If I unplug the the hard drives and reboot then the CD/DVD drive shows up.
My question is: I want the single 500GB sata as the boot drive (c:) (don't need RAID?). I want the two IDE drives with the 320GB as drive (e:) and the 120GB as drive (whatever) and the CD/DVD drive to show up as (F: or whatever).
I don't know what settings in the bios I need to be working with. I have been experimenting but would like the correct way to set the bios up.
    Thanks

    Nope. Didn't work.
I can try things all day but this doesn't make sense. Surely someone knows what bios settings are required (especially on the MSI board site) to set the bios on a MSI 945p platnium motherboard. I have the sata drive plugged into the Sata 1 connector and bios still says it is ide channel 4 master. The computer will boot with just the sata drive plugged in but the problems start when I plug the ide drives in on ide 1 or 2 or 3.

  • M30x bios does not detect hard drive, wont boot from HD

Can someone help me in this issue.
My Sat m30x wont boot from Hard Drive, instead tries to boot from network.
Tried to load setup defaults and Hd wont show on the settings
tried to reistal origin CD software by toshiba and the message no target drive displays
Can this be a hardware problem, some damaged fisical conection, or is it a bios problem
thanks in advance for some ligth on this problem

My M30x has the same problem. I just have used it for 2 months.
I sent it to the repair center as I was told to do, because it has warranty.
I'm still waiting for a response from them. I don't know what caused it.

  • Can't get SATA drive to boot - MSI K8NGM2-FID

Mobo is MSI K8NGM2-FID.  I've had two IDE drives w/ XP and added a SATA II (WD7500AAKS) recently as a storage drive.  Now I'd like to make the SATA the boot drive, but after cloning it from the IDE boot drive it hasn't yet got far in the start up process (cloning with WD Tools, then again with Acronis).  I can't tell whether the problem is BIOS or Windows (XP) or ?  MSI Update says the BIOS is current and I set the SATA drive as the first HD in the boot order in Advanced BIOS features.
On start up, the computer runs through the BIOS sequence onscreen and then stops somewhere between the end of that and the Windows blue screen coming up, leaving a blank screen except a flashing cursor on the left. When I disconnect the two IDE drives as a test, the same thing happens. Then, with them still disconnected, I try booting from the XP CD and it gets to the point of checking the computer's current configuration and then the screen goes blank indefinitely. I would think it would either show the XP setup menu or give a message that's something is missing.
Does this sound like BIOS or Windows or ?  Is there anything else in BIOS that needs changing?  I've been told that IDE drive jumpers have no effect on SATA drives.  Is that true?  Thanks.

Good timing.  I'd like to add partitions to my new (cloned) SATA boot drive (C:), but wanted to back up first.  A problem and a question come up.  First, when I remount the old IDE drive as a second drive D:, even wiped clean, problems ensue.  Comodo wants to look for my firewall installation on D: and Acronis won't allow me to clone back, i.e., clone from the new drive to the old.
It's not really clear what you had before or what you have now in terms of HDDs: you had two IDE drives, C: & D: and one SATA as E:??; now you have a SATA boot drive.  Do you still have the 40GB IDE drive?  Did the clone over to the SATA automatically extend the old 160GB C: partition to 750GB?  Sorry but I've no idea how Acronis works.  "Wiped clean" is kinda vague - it could mean using the HDD mfr's utility to write zeroes to the entire surface... or just creating a new Extended partition containing a formatted(?) logical volume.  If that old IDE drive has a Primary partition it could still be marked as bootable, which you can check with BootitNG... and it's not a good idea to have a Primary partition on a 2nd drive.
    Quote
Second, I assume that files are spread over the boot drive, not just grouped in the first 150GB, even if defragged.  In reducing the partition size - now 698GB - how does BootitNG know to make sure everything ends up in the first partition?  I read about this somewhere but don't see any mention in BootITNG.
Again, I don't know how you got to the situation of a 698GB partition on the SATA boot drive - it would have been better to clone to the same sized C: partition as the old 160GB drive and then use a tool like BootitNG to extend it to whatever size you want... then add new partitions.
No partition management software can guarantee a partition shrink will work - they can only shrink out unallocated space.  In that respect Windows XP Defrag is unreliable at both leaving unallocated space at the end of a partition AND at accurately reporting what is used and what is not.  In such a situation, without a better, more accurate, defragger I generally run defrag several times, with reboots in between until it "looks" like it's safe to shrink and do the shrink in steps, with checks and defrags again, in between.  Yes, it's a PITA.

  • Disk Utility doesn't show new drive when trying to install Snow Leopard

Please help because I've searched everywhere. My MacBook's hard drive failed. It's done for. I bought another internal, Western Digital 320gb WD3200BEVT. So it's brand new and when I boot from the Snow Leopard install I don't see the new hard drive in the Disk Utility App. All I see is my CD-Drive. No where is my new drive so that I can at least format it. People suggested on other forums that maybe it's the cables but i don't think it is cause the hard drive you just slide in and out. There are no jumpers on this drive either, so that's out. I've narrowed it down to two things, bad hard drive or this drive just isn't recognized by by Snow Leopard?

If you have tried restarting a few times and it still doesn't show up I'm afraid you are gonna have to go back in and check the connections. I know they just slot into the carriage, but possibly it is not in tight. I can only suggest you open it up and check everything thoroughly. If after a thorough check, if it still does not mount you may want to take the hard drive back and swap it. Are you sure it was only a hard drive failure in the first place? I only ask this because WD hard drives have quite a solid reputation.

  • Finder doesn't show USB drive

I have a USB drive that doesn't show up in Finder after I insert it. A different drive does show up in Finder.
Both drives work perfectly well on my PC.
Any idea what could be wrong?

    HI rs,
Did the USB external drive come with any software? If it did, that would be the drivers. Reinstalling the drivers could do the trick, as they can become corrupted.
Check your Finder preferences to make sure you have this box checked:
click any clear space on your Desktop so it says Finder in the Menu. Click Finder/Preferences.
When the pane opens make sure where it says: Show these items on the Desktop: The "Hard disks" box is checked.
Run Disk Utility and Repair Disk Permissions. DU is located here: Applications/Utilities.

  • Timemachine doesn't show external drive (that has now died)

Hi, I've had timemachine backing up my HD and two external firewire drives (one with my 11gb iphoto library on it).
If I open the timemachine generated Backups.backupdb folder in the finder, the contents of the 3 drives are all there in separate folders. Fine.
One of the external drives has just died, so I want to restore my iphoto library (i.e. move it from timemachine to the other external drive).
But when I enter timemachine, the dead drive doesn't show up.
If I try to copy the file I want to restore via the finder, it says it will take 450 hours!
    What can I do?

Do NOT copy the folder via the Finder.

  • No SATA drive after booting into Windows (BootCamp 5.0)

One of my DVD burners has failed in one of my 2008 Apple Mac Pro's.  I pulled the drive out (it was PATA/IDE) and replaced with a new LG WH14NS40 Blu-Ray Burner.  I had to pull the fan out (temporarily) and run a new 24" SATA cable (with right-angle connector) from one of the two extra SATA ports (on the motherboard) to the new actual SATA drive, and also install a MOLEX to SATA power connector.
I managed to get the drive installed (and working).  I now at least have a Blu-Ray burner in my 2008 Apple Mac Pro (with OS X 10.8.3 Mountain Lion).
The problem seems to be with when I boot directly into Windows 8.  When I boot into Windows 8, the two ports on the motherboard are disabled and the latest BootCamp 5.0 drivers don't seem to support the two SATA ports on the motherboard (they seem to be disabled).  So when I boot directly into Windows, my LG WH14NS40 Blu-Ray drive disappears.
I really wish Apple would have just "done things right" from the very beginning and took the time to write decent BootCamp 5.0 drivers that supported the two SATA ports on the motherboard, so that users who need to replace their old/dying/aging PATA drives could easily replace them with SATA drives and use the two SATA ports on the motherboard.
Also it would have been nice if Apple would have taken the time to write good BootCamp 5 drivers (for Windows 8) that support booting from the two SATA ports on the 2008 Apple Mac Pro motherboard.
I've heard of many people that have tried installing RAID Controller Cards (from OWC) in their 2008 Apple Mac Pro to upgrade their four hard drive caddys from SATA II (3Gbps) to SATA III (6Gbps) but unfortunately the RAID Controller Cards don't seem to be bootable and the only option is to install a fifth (bootable) hard drive into the Apple Mac Pro and this is normally done by installing a bootable SSD drive into one of the DVD-drive bays.  Unfortunately if you use a SATA SSD drive (which most SSD's are SATA) and then use one of the two SATA ports on the motherboard to connect it, then you go back to having the problem of not having a boot drive when you boot directly into Windows 8 (since there are no BootCamp 5 drivers for the 2008 Apple Mac Pro that support the two SATA ports on the 2008 Apple Mac Pro motherboard).
This seems to be a never-ending problem, and we have twelve 2008 Apple Mac Pro's (along with an office full of 2008/2009/2010/2013 Apple Mac Pro's) and we're getting extremely frustrated with Apple's lack of support in BootCamp 5.0 drivers for the 2008 Apple Mac Pro (and the two SATA ports on the mainboard).
Please fix this problem, and please update the BootCamp 5.0/5.1 drivers (for 2008 Apple Mac Pro users) and please support the two SATA ports on the Apple Mac Pro mainboard, and please make those two SATA ports on the motherboard bootable and usable in both Microsoft Windows 8 and in OS X 10.8.3 Mountain Lion.  Please update the BootCamp 5.0 drivers to support the two onboard SATA ports in Windows 8 (so that my Blu-Ray burner is viewable/usable in Windows 8).

Just as a follow-up, yes it does seem to be possible to get both SATA ports on a 2008 Apple Mac Pro working (in Windows 8).
You need to enable AHCI in Windows 8.
First boot into Windows 8 and then go into the windows registry (regedit) and enable AHCI in your registry.
You can do this by going to the following registry key:
    Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\storahci
Set the "Start"  Value data to "0" (to enable AHCI in Windows).
After AHCI is enabled in Windows, then reboot your computer and now the SATA drive (connected to the ODD port) should appear in Windows (under devices).
Now the next step is to update your AHCI drivers (in Windows) to the latest Intel drivers, so that your SATA device will actually work (and work properly).
The latest Intel RST drivers can be found here:  https://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?agr=Y&ProdId=2101&DwnldID=2306 0&ProductFamily=Software+Products&ProductLine=Chipset+Software&ProductProduct=In tel%C2%AE+Rapid+Storage+Technology+(Intel%C2%AE+RST)&lang=eng
Download the 64-bit drivers (if you are running 64-bit Windows).
After you install the latest drivers, and perform a reboot, your SATA drive should now work under windows.
You can find a long detailed thread about enabling AHCI (in Windows 7) here:  http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=760482
The thread listed above is a bit old/dated (2009?) but it does give detailed step-by-step instructions for those that want to enable AHCI (and get those two onboard SATA ports working in Windows 8 or Windows 7).
I managed to get everything working in Windows 8, and I was able to enable AHCI in Windows 8, installed the latest AHCI drivers and I'm now able to use my SATA Blu-Ray burner in my 2008 Apple Mac Pro.
    Hope this helps!
