BIOS upgrade? Or don't bother? Or Microcode ?

Hi all, I have a Thinkpad X220 with the original "stone age" (2011) BIOS. I don't have problems with the laptop, but I don't want to miss possible later optimalisations. (The only problem I have is the fan going wild from time to time, I'm looking into "thinkfan" solutions, so I consider that solved)
What do you guys advise regarding the BIOS? I am torn:
a) Upgrade it to the latest Lenovo bios
b) Leave it alone: "don't fix it if it ain't broken"
c) Microcode. Per the Arch Wiki: " .... . Intel releases microcode updates to correct processor behavior .....While the regular approach to getting this microcode update is via a BIOS upgrade, Intel realizes that this can be an administrative hassle. The Linux operating system and VMware ESX products have a mechanism to update the microcode after booting....."
[ d) coreboot. Unfortunately, flashing it is hard and it misses lot of functions.... This would have been the best solution, maybe later, when (if) the image is improved.... http://www.coreboot.org/Board:lenovo/x230     So I dismiss this solution for now ]
My idea is a):  just upgrade to a newer BIOS.   What would you advise me?

I recently upgraded the Intel bios on a Sandy Bridge board (an Intel board with sandy bridge i5, somewhat like yours).  It bricked the board.   Opinion in the Intel support forums was that the latest firmware would detect some sandy bridge boards as if they were Ivy Bridge and that _maybe_ my board would be able to boot if I upgraded the processor.  It's cheaper to upgrade the board so I ended up tossing a perfectly good but unbootable motherboard into the trash.  (and for the record, I am VERY happy with my new Gigabyte Z77 board -- GA-Z77X-UD3H).  You have been warned.

if a train comes to a stop at a train station then what becomes of work at a workstation?

question: is it possible one needs to install 5.02 first before installing 5.03? if so, could you please provide a link?
NO, one doesn't need to install all previous BIOS updates before installing the most current update. BIOS updates are cumulative and contain all previously released modifications.
"The only BIOS update listed for this model is...sp35113"... really? try this one on... sp35113 (5.03) and sp35154 (5.04)
    Please see the list of BIOSes (with motherboard model, date, SP#, version #, and OS requirement) below;
    A8N-BR

    sp35112.exe

    A8MN-BR
    2007-09-28
    sp35154.exe
    Version:5.04
    Microsoft Windows Vista
Note that the A8N-BR has two distinct version series (3.xx and 5.xx) and that the OS requirement varies with the version. Note that extra BIOS update you listed, sp35154.exe, is for a different motherboard ... the A8MN-BR. Also, note that the A8MN-BR has two distinct version series (3.xx and 5.xx) and that the OS requirement varies with the version.
but what oh wise one might the other issues be? i've been at this for three days and i'm now at my wit's end
Without getting into too much detail, HP has the confusing habit of using the same or similar motherboard model numbers for different motherboards. To make matters worse, HP sometimes chooses to name the motherboard models with names that are the same but incremental or similar. Case in point... the M2N78-LA (4 diferent boards... Viola, Voilet, Violet3, Violet6)... the M2N68-LA (Narra, Narra2, Narra3, etc,)... the PTGD-LA/PTGD1-LA/PTGD2-LA series (Goldfish series, Grouper, Puffer, Piranha, etc.). Many times this cause BIOS update issues where there is a BIOS update listed on the support for a particular model but when you run the update, it is rejected.
This happened to me with a Violet based computer and a Violet6 based computer. HP listed the same BIOS update for both but it really only applied to the Violet based system. Trying to update the Violet6 board resulted in an error like yours. A call to HP and months later, they pulled the update.
I suspect some combination of errors is the reason you can't install the update. Honestly, the only one I would consider installing is sp35113.exe. And if it doesn't install, I would stop while ahead. The only reason to install a BIOS update, is to correct an issue that affects your system or to add support for something specific that you need. If the update doesn't address those items, there is no reason to attempt a potentially dangerous BIOS update and risk turning your computer into a BRICK.

  • BIOS upgrade issue on my E50 with Linux

I see that there is a new version of BIOS/firmware for my E51 and I wanted to upgrade/flash it, but:
    1. I don't have floppies (nor are they available in my neighbourhood)
    2. The CD drive I got with my system stopped functioning right after a fortnight after my warranty expired and I did not bother to replace it since I use USB drives for flexible storage.
    3. I am using Ubuntu and don't have a Windows license.
Now, how do I upgrade the firmware?
I can't burn it on a floppy (1. because there are not new floppys available and 2. even if I manage to get one old one, how do I transfer the f/w image onto it in Linux since only a .exe is given)
I can't burn it on a CD drive (cos' I don't have a CD drive at all)
    What I could do?
If possible (and supported), I want to burn/install the ISO (provided by Lenovo) to my USB drive and boot the system using the USB drive and run the upgrade. But, there doesnt seem to be any way to do this. Lenovo neither  mention anything nor gives a USB-install software.
    What I tried:
I tried the usual software that install an ISO image to a USB drive, but that did not help. I never got to any screen that asks me if I want to upgrade.
    Anyone knows any way out?
This is my last hope before I decide its enough and sit to write my own software.  (:-))

Wow. Two days and not a single person knows what to do. Now, I know which brand of PC I should not buy. HP is way better, atleast they have a bios flash utility that can configure the bios upgrade to run off a pen drive.
Let me find my way out. Good day.

  • VGA BIOS Upgrade

    Hi,
i have a MSI 7800GTX installed in a Windows X86_64 machine and would like to know how I can update the cards BIOS as the update software does not work on this platform ?
    TIA

To add... MSI's Live update software probably doesn't have an update for that card since it is so new. Cards are not like motherboards. And nVidia usually get's it right the first time around. I believe MSI stuck to the reference design. In fact, it may very well be that card is likely manufactured for nVidia by contract manufacturers, then sent to MSI. This is very common with initial releases to maintain a high level of quality control.
The only reason (in this case) someone would want to mess with BIOS upgrades or modded BIOS's, is to try to get more performance out of it. If you don't know EXACTLY what you are doing, you CAN render your investment useless. And there are no serious bugs that I am aware of. As Stu mentions, in the case of a specific issue, or functionality, there would be something, however, this seems like a pretty successeful release for a change.

hello guys i face a problem when i upgrade from iOS 4.2.1 to iOS 5.1.1 on ipad 3 .when i upgrade i don' t found the camera app from the built in apps.when i try to install from the app store i don't  found the correct camera app .please help me .please give any suitable link where i find the correct camera app

It's a built-in app, so it can't be deleted nor downloaded from the store. If you can't find it on any of your homescreens or app folders, and you can't find it via the spotlight search screen (swipe your first home screen to the right), then is it hidden by Settings > General > Restrictions > Camera being set 'off' ?
If not then have you tried a reset to see if you can find it after the iPad has restarted ? Press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds (ignore the red slider), after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot.

  • 661FM-L BIOS Upgrade Bad?

I have two MSI 661FM-L motherboards installed into two new systems.  Both have new Intel P4 3.2Ghz processors with 800Mhz FSB and both have 1GB of memory.  Both booted up fine and we installed Windows XP Professional on them.  We then noticed that the PC's are booting up and only showing 2.8Ghz, so we assumed it needed a BIOS upgrade.  So we downloaded the latest BIOS at http://www.msi.com.tw/program/support/bios/bos/spt_bos_detail.php?UID=501&kind=1 (version 3.6) and now both systems will not boot.  It gets POST, but after detecting the hard disk, DVD burner, etc, it gives the error message "Not support this type CPU: 0F33" and the only option then is to go into the BIOS.  We reset the BIOS values to optimized and safe, both still not fixing this problem.

This support page shows that board does not support a 3.2G Prescott cpu
    http://www.msi.com.tw/program/products/mainboard/mbd/pro_mbd_cpu_support_detail.php?UID=501&kind=1
What's odd is it shows it supports every other CPU. Can you confirm if you have a Prescott CPU?

How to upgrade bios for Flex 10 ?  How to run the "93cn52ww.exe". My Flex 10 is now running Win 8.1 32-bits.... Bios upgrade seems to be for 64 bits.  I don't see any bios upgrade for 32 bits systems

do you mean it also correct the problem described in the thread: "Flex10: Can't wake up from sleep after upgraded to windows 8.1" ?
So how can I fix this "wake up from sleep" issue !
How to enter bios setting and read installed version ?

  • A70z BIOS Upgrade via Flash from O/S

    Hello Everyone,
Situation: A friends A70z 0401 slow as heck; 1GB Memory (as shipped); Current BIOS Version: 98KT17A
He wants to upgrade to max. 4GB but per Lenovo's website this requires a BIOS upgrade to a minimum of 98KT25A to recognize a 2GB module.
Memory arrived and I went to apply the latest version posted, 98KT27A, and I received the following:"Error: File ROM ID incorrect" when attempting to flash via O/S.
Readme file excerpt from the package build:
    *     2.  In the application graphical user interface, press button "Open"  *
    *         and select the BIOS ROM image "imagexx.rom", where "xx"           *
    *         represents the two digit flash level. Then press button "Flash" to   *
    *         start the update process. When the update process is complete,    *
    *         press button "Exit" to exit the application.                      *
Using the GUI-based "AFUWIN" utility and selecting the image file that came with the update I would have expected to find a file named of IMAGE27.ROM based upon the above instructions, but found IMAGE98.ROM.  Could my problem be as simple as renaming the delivered file name to IMAGE27.ROM and re-executing the AFUWIN utility?
If so, naughty BIOS package build.
    Thanks in Advance,
    Sue
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    So here's the answer:
Since my friends PC was out of warranty, the support team was some help and suggested running Lenovo's System Update Utility and apply the BIOS upgrade that way.  I did, it failed.  After it fails you can run the update manually, I did, it failed.  It failed because in both cases it was using the Windows-based utility.
I gave up at that point and just burned the ISO image (98KT27A) to a CD and the new version 98JT27A installed successfully.
Hope this info helps someone who runs into the same issue that I had.

  • BIOS upgrade stream

Is there a list of the necessary BIOS upgrades and the order of the upgrades?
I have been lead to understand that you cannot go directly from like 39 to 94.
    Thanks
    Frank
    Kenmore, WA
    USA

I waited and finally updated my S10 BIOS from 38 directly to 92.
    No problems.
But don't update unless your machine has an issue
that is specifically addressed by an update. IMHO
Some users have attempted BIOS updates that fail and leave problems.
Others develop odd symptoms that did not exist before their BIOS update.
And most of the updates modify functions that do not affect most users.
For example, one update allows the user to turn off the power-plug-in&out beep in the BIOS.
The most recent update adds some sort of 3G functionality for the few 3G-capable machines.
Rule #1: If it ain't broke, don't fix it!

  • Tried BIOS upgrade. Ruined computer?

I was out of my element but I don't know of anyone in my town to ask for help.
Here's the story. Subject is a PM8M3-V motherboard with a Celeron 3.2 CPU. I thought I would like to try a Pentium 4 CPU since they are just about giving them away but was told that in order to use it I had to upgrade my BIOS to V1.5. Mine is 1.4.
I was given the link to down load the update program, ran it and selected Windows mode and nothing happened. Seemed to work but never rebooted and never upgraded the BIOS. SO- I tried the DOS mode. Nice pretty stuff on the screen and the floppy was written to but once again, nothing appeared to happen and the hard disk activity stopped. I waited a long while and still nothing so I did a hard reboot and was presented with NOTHING on the screen.
I remember seeing some reference to the fact that the floppy would save me if the BIOS upgrade failed but it seems it is not going to help me.
So, my question is - any way out of this mess that I have gotten myself into or do I just scrap the computer?
I appreciate any help I can get.

Exactly which P4 CPU (model, part or spec code number) are you referring to? Not all are supported on that MB.
I don't think the P4 is really important because it hasn't even been shipped yet but I'll study the link you sent, Hope I can make some use of it.

  • G62-264CA Bios upgrade

Hello, I have a g62-264ca that belongs to a very elderly neighbour who has asked me to look at the machine for him.
It appears he has been sold and has been struggling with a foreign machine (and keyboard) and didn't realise.
To help him I have installed 64 bit Linux mint and confined him to the applications that he needs which he is now happy with however the fan does seems to roar often and given the lighter nature of the OS I was surprised and so on further checking it appears that there has been a bios upgrade.
The keyboard replacement is straightforward but I am having difficulty checking for a BIOS upgrade as I beleive it might be from France or maybe Canda?
    Can anyone help?
Please, I  don't need you to use this post to knock Linux.

    The BIOS updates are here.
Can you read the Microsoft COA sticker and see all twenty five characters of the license activation key?
If you can, then you can download legal Digital River  Windows 7 ISO images  from here. I suggest using Windows 7 (64-bit). After you have the ISO image you can use the Microsoft USB\DVD tool to create a USB Windows 7 installer and upgrade the BIOS. The Windows 7 install will be very quick. The Windows 7 drivers for the notebook are here at the HP web support portal download section.
Anyone who uses a SmartPhone that has Android installed and knows what that means certainly wouldn't purposely knock Linux.
