Black screen upon waking from sleep

Hello,
I have an intermittent problem with waking my entry-level MBP from sleep; on some occasions, the screen remains black instead of the system waking up and displaying the Finder.
Recently, upon waking from sleep, the authentication dialog displayed, I typed my password and pressed return, the dialog dismissed, the screen remained black, and the wait cursor displayed without spinning.
To recover, I needed to force power down and cold reboot.
system.log (in Console) contained the following entry at the time of the crash.
Aug 14 07:39:51 BF-H-MBP kernel[0]: NVChannel(GL): Graphics channel exception! status = 0xffff info32 = 0xd = GR: SW Notify ErrorAug 14 07:39:51 BF-H-MBP kernel[0]: NVChannel(GL): Graphics channel exception! status = 0xffff info32 = 0xd = GR: SW Notify Error
The entries surrounding the one above were as follows (the next to last one evidently was the final entry before the forced power down).

Can someone diagnose the problem based upon the above Console entries?
Thanks in advance!

Hi,
Thanks for taking time to post.
My question is different than the one your posting answers.
My question is, what is the diagnosis of the problem based upon the Console log entries that I've posted (rather than "How do I recover from the black screen?")?
Cheers!

  • Black screen after waking from sleep mode - Compaq Presario CQ5110F

My mother's computer has been having the problem listed in the subject -- after waking from sleep mode, the monitor just stays black, and won't come back. After trying everything I could find online, I eventually found the bios update which claims to fix the exact issue. The problem is that I guess my mother had opted to upgrade to Windows 7, while the bios update seems to only work for Windows Vista, as I get the following error message: "Your system does not meet the minimum requirements for this update. Update has been canceleld. (9998)." I've tried running the update in Vista compatibility mode, with no luck. I've tried using a different monitor, I've updated all the drivers, Windows Updates are all current, I've cleared CMOS. Any idea on how to fix this? It's very recent; only for about the past 2 weeks has this been happening, while we've had the computer for over 3 years. It's quite a waste of energy to keep it on all day.

    Hello liltwix,
When taking your computer out of safe mode the screen just remains black, is that correct? I will try to help you with this issue.
I understand you upgraded from Vista to 7, was that when the issue started or has the computer had windows 7 installed for some time before this problem started?
Please respond back at your earliest convenience.

  • Black screen upon wake from sleep when I change power state while in sleep

    Hi,
I'm having this problem where my MacbookPro won't always wake from sleep.
OSX is 10.6.3 and fully updated.
I've done a lot of troubleshooting, and I can now replicate the issue 100%:
1 - Put the MacbookPro to sleep by closing lid
2 - Change power source (from plugged-in to battery or vice versa)
3 - open lid - MacbookPro will wake, but stays at black screen and is unresponsive.
Only if I change power state while sleeping will this issue show. Anyone else experincing this issue, and anygot got a clue on what to do?
    regards,
    Lasse

I've seen the same issue after upgrading to 10.6.3. I have a one year old MacBook Pro. I would have the screen be black after coming back from sleep or hibernate (tried both).
The workaround I found is to close the lid -almost- all the way and then immediately open it back up again, like I am catching the Mac going back to sleep and then changing my mind. For whatever reason, this has been reliably solving my issue for the last couple weeks reliably.
Only other oddity I noticed is that immediately after upgrading OS X told me that my one year old battery needed to go in for servicing...
Anyway, now all looks right with the world assuming you don't mind a quick close/open cycle.. Lovely...

  • Black screen after waking from sleep, but mouse pointer visible

I'm not sure if this is the same as the many other posts on problems connecting the Mac Mini to an external monitor. In my case, after it wakes, there is no login menu - but the mouse pointer is visible and I can move it around the screen no problem.
At present, I have to power the Mac Mini down and back up again, which is unacceptable.
What's causing this and how can I fix it?

Yes, I have this problem too. I reported to Apple about 3 or 4 weeks ago. They said no one else ever reported it and said they would escalate it but they have never got back too me. It is a pain because my mini is a media center pc and hard to get to when this happens.
For now the work around I use is to unplug the mini dvi connecter and plug it back in; this fixes the issue until the next time it happens.
+My mini (2009 version) is connected using the mini-dvi connector to a Denon receiver (with a DVI->hdmi connector) which is then connected to a sony 1080p TV. This replaced an older mini (intel duo) which did not have this problem using the same setup.+

  • Black screen upon waking

Twice now since installing 10.5 my Mac has woke up with a black screen, forcing me to hold the button down and attempt rebooting several times. Is this a known problem?

I can confirm the same problem here on a PowerPC Dual G5 with 2 Apple Cinema 23" monitors on both Tiger (10.4.11) and Leopard (10.5.5). The secondary monitor is blacked out upon waking from sleep and/or reboot, yet it appears in the Displays Preference Pane. Mirroring the displays or changing its resolution does not help.
Now, when I plug and replug the monitor's DVI, I get this in the console...
Sep 29 10:51:41 XXXXXX kernel[0]: USBF: 198.392 AppleUSBHubPort: Port 2 of Hub at 0x4b300000 reported error 0xe00002c0 while doing getting port status (2)
So, apparently it's a USB issue. Did a quick search on this forum, but I havn't found out a solution yet.
    Any clues!?

  • User Name Upon Waking from Sleep

    Hey guys,
We're given the choice of entering a password upon waking from sleep. I kinda want to take it one step further and have the user name erased too so that people have to enter the user name and the password upon the computer waking. Does anyone know how to do this or if it's even possible?
    Thanks for any help.

The only way I can think of would be to log out rather than just put it to sleep or let it go to sleep. However, if you have a good secure password there really isn't too much reason to require the additional step.
There may be a way to do it but I can't think of one.

  • IMac has empty blue screen on waking from sleep

My iMac goes to a blue empty screen when waking from sleep. No login. No desktop shows up. Any ideas or explanations? I am working on clearing off hard drive space - currently about 100GB available on 1TB system. But I do not know if that could be a cause.
Thanks for any help you can give.

As far as resetting the SMT, my only option was to hold the power button down and force the system off anyway, since I couldn't see anything.
I did reset the PRAM, which ended up being disastrous! Instead of encountering the problem each time the system went to sleep like what had been happening, after I reset the PRAM, it started doing it immediately during startup. I couldn't even get to the desktop. The computer was completely unusable!
If I hadn't had a spare monitor around, I wouldn't have been able to do anything with my computer! Interestingly, the problem doesn't occur with my old Apple Studio Display, just my new Apple Cinema Display.
You better revert to 10.5.4 and stay with it until this is resolved.

  • Black screen on resume from sleep using open source AMD/ATI driver

When waking from sleep using systemctl suspend or pm-suspend , I am presented with a black screen. I can still open programs, type, etc. but cannot see what I am doing. I usually just wind up rebooting from whatever terminal I had open, but again I can't see what I am typing. Upon reboot, the screen starts back up again. Everything else seems to resume from sleep just fine, it's just the screen that won't turn back on.
I came from Ubuntu and had this same problem there. However, I only had this problem when using the open source xf86-video driver; when using the proprietary drivers, I was able to suspend/resume just fine. So it seems this problem is specific to the open source drivers.
If I'm using an external monitor, my external monitor will resume just fine after waking from sleep, but the laptop screen will not.
Googling around shows this is a common problem with AMD/ATI cards, and after a lot of attempts and failures I'm interested in knowing if anyone else has solved this problem.
What I've tried so far (without success):
-various quirks included with pm-utils to turn on dpms after resume
    -xrandr after resumption from sleep
==xrandr --output LVDS --off (If used without suspending (so while the screen still works) this seems to crash Gnome the first time around, but Gnome automatically restarts. If used a second time, it completely blanks the screen and requires a reboot)
    ==xrandr --output LVDS --mode 1600x900
-xset dpms force on or xset dpms force off after resumption from sleep
-vbetool dpms off and vbetool dpms on results in error message "Real mode call failed"
-scripts using vbetool or xrandr when resuming from sleep
-switching between virtual consoles and gnome using alt-ctrl-fn-f1 and alt-ctrl-fn-f2 keys
    My setup:
    -HP Envy dv7
    -UEFI dual-boot with Windows 8
    -AMD Radeon HD 7640G
    -xf86-video-ati 1:7.2.0-1 driver
-Gnome DE using GDM login manager
    Thank you.
EDIT: I did try using the proprietary drivers for a time, but found I couldn't adjust my brightness. At first I thought working suspension > adjustable brightness, but I quickly changed my mind after one night of trying to work on an unadjustable maximally bright screen.

Unfortunately I could not fix the problem so I wiped my system and loaded all new drivers before I found this posting.
Is there a way to get the old ATI driver that works? The only one available on the ATI and Lenovo website is the latest one with the problem. I agree with you David, Lenovo should have fixed this problem already with ATI.

  • Bizarre psychedelic display upon waking from sleep

does this mean a logic board failure is imminent? the screen showed nothing but a bizarre, seemingly random collection of pixels in all colors - almost like multicolored tv 'snow.'
I ran the hardware test disk, and it said the logic board 'passed,' but i'm not sure how it can test whether or not it's seated correctly.
in any case, i've also been experiencing other display issues (black screen, typically), most commonly when waking from sleep.
this is my wife's computer, by the way, and it's a desktop replacement - no travel, so it hasn't been abused at all.

Does an attached external display show the same effects
as the internal one? The supplied adapter should allow
a second display to mirror the internal one, and this may
help troubleshoot the extent of the hardware failure.

  • "Washed out" screen after waking from sleep?

Over the past couple of months, when either waking from sleep or coming off the screen saver, the display has a washed out look to it. The colors can be restored by either reinitializing the screen saver or putting the computer to sleep and waking it back up again. I tried the PRAM and PMU resets with no success. The problem seems to be getting worse. (more frequent) Any ideas, suggestions would be appreciated.

hey, just adding my story to yours cause it seems to be a similar issue.
Every now and the when My MBP wakes from sleep or screensaver, the screen seems to lose its calibration, it gets all blueish. When I go to Display preferences to see what's there, the computer sort of recovers from the flaw and loads proper colors. I can almost her it say Oh yeah, color calibration!..

  • Sluggish upon waking from sleep

when I wake my Mac Book Pro from sleep, my mouse reacts strangely (erratically, sluggishly, etc) for a good 30 seconds. Anyone experience anything similar? Thanks.

Not sure if you've fixed this issue already, but are you using the iStat Pro widget by any chance? I was experiencing the exact same problem (erratic mouse behaviour after waking from sleep), and it was resolved when I removed the iStat Pro widget.
Not to cast aspersions on this particular widget or anything, but removing it seemed to resolve the issue for me.

  • Vertical lines of "numbers" and screen distortion upon waking from sleep

    Hi,
I'm posting this for my friend who has a G5 iMac (the first model on the market, about a year and a half old).
Suddenly, he's having a bizarre problem with it. Intermittently, when he wakes the machine from sleep, either immediately, or after several minutes, the screen will go all "double" or fuzzy on him, and then vertical lines of what look like "numbers" (almost like the famous "Matrix" effect) appear on the screen. Only a hard, power button reset will fix it. He called AppleCare, and they had him zap the PRAM, which didn't fix it. Now they say that because the problem is intermittent, there's nothing they can do for now.
    Any ideas???
    Thanks,
    Steve

    Hi all,
Bouj here.. I must say I am amazed at the amount of conversation this post has generated ..
I wanted to put out a few questions for those of us with iMac G5's, really it's a symptom I have noticed with both of the G5's that failed ..
If enabled, does the feature in Power option to dim the screen work reliably ?
I looked back at when the problems with both machines started and it was soon after the dimming feature just stopped working ...even after PRAM, SMU and Open firmware resets didn't do the trick after a fresh install of OS X 10.4.x
Obviously this is a power feature controlled by the logic board and both of my machines had logic board failures ...
If anyone can post their experiences and if they have notices this it may help others or even provide a warning sign for others ...

  • Black screen upon waking Mac

    Mac Mini 2011 with 2x4GB RAM, 2.3Ghz i5, 500GB 5400RPM HDD
So I need some help regarding my Mac and it's driving me mad! Its a bit tempermental and it isnt always the same occurance each time, but basically symptons are (somtimes it occurs, sometimes not with each one!):
Turning on It will freeze on white screen (no logo)
upon waking up from sleep it will display black screen with mouse and notifications. no login UI or wallpaper. Can SOMETIMES login if i just type password (as if login screen is still there). mouse dissapears once typing begins
Sometimes when the previous event occurs (^) and i put computer to sleep it will then do the opposite and display just the wallpaper with no input from mouse, keyboard
I have tried removing all devices (webcam, USB mouse etc) and turning on computer but as its tempermental
I have also reinstalled a new OS X over the top from internet recovery
Also reformated HDD and restored OS X.
    Also reset SMC and NVRAM.
    Also checked in

    /System/Library/StartupItems - nothing either
/System/Library/LaunchDaemons - Loads of files in this folder
    /Library/LaunchDaemons - only a few files

Also run the AHT extended test, no issues detected.
Also set "sudo pmset autopoweroff 0" and "sudo pmset standby 0" in Kernal.
Also repaired disk permissions, it only repaired the printer stuff.
After i gave this in kernal, i then reset SMC again to check.
Checked console and noticed a 40 second gap before this error:   "05/02/2014 07:03:00.266 configd[55]: inet_set_autoaddr(en1, 1) failed, Resource busy"
turned off my WiFi and issues still persisted.
This had previously been on forums last week in Mac Mini section with the help of 'BDAqua' however im out of options and need some more help. If anyone could be helpful enough to give some suggestions on why my screen is black upon waking up (exc. notifications. they appear) and most time i need to hard reboot (sometimes i can type in password and it unlocks).
I can not afford to start fresh, i have a 110GB iTunes Library with 210 iOS apps and photos too important to me to be forgotten.
    PLEASE HELP ME

Try setting up another admin user account to see if the same problem continues. If Back-to-My Mac is selected in System Preferences, the Guest account will not work. The intent is to see if it is specific to one account or a system wide problem. This account can be deleted later.
Isolating an issue by using another user account
If the problem is still there, try booting into the Safe Mode using your normal account.  Disconnect all peripherals except those needed for the test. Shut down the computer and then power it back up after waiting 10 seconds. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. When you reboot normally, the initial reboot may be slower than normal. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart by using the application un-installer. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don't do them all at once.
