Blade Switch Management

I am deploying HP BladeSystem C Class with Cisco 3020 Ethernet blade switches connecting to Catalyst 6500 at the aggregation layer. What are my best options for managing layer 2, VLANs, etc, across the Cat6K and 3020 switches?

Matt,
Great catch, thank you!

  • Hp GbE2c Layer 2/3 Ethernet Blade Switch

I have encountered problem configuring Hp GbE2c Layer 2/3 Ethernet Blade Switch. I was able to use null modem cable to manually assign management IP address and manage/configure the switch, we are trying to implement VRRP high-availability set-up but we were unable to accomplish it so we return the previous/default setup of the switch by restoring the switch image & even make a hardware reset. Again we start all over again to complete the VRRP setup, by the fourth time we perform resetting the default settings, and now we cannot assign manually the IP address by using null modem cable with hyper terminal software and reset the hardware but to no avail. We check the serial port of a remote machine and it's properly working. So we are wondering what is the problem? the switch? the null modem cable is good, remote machine used is working properly.
Can anyone from HP that can help solve our problem..
    thanks in advance

  • 3524-XL w/GBIC Visual Switch Manager

    I have a Cisco 3524-XL switch w/ 12.0(5)XU Enterprise Edition OS
Been using the Java-based Visual Switch Manager to manage it, no problems.
I added a 1000BaseT GBIC, and everything works mechanically and thru telnet, I can manage the switch. Everything works.
But now when I try to use the Visual Switch Manager, I get the following Java Error:
"Visual Switch Manager has detected a change in the devices hardware configuration and needs to redraw the device." I say ok, and it comes back again, and again, etc. The running config has been saved and rebooting does not help. Tried a coupla versions of Java(Sun's). Currently using 1.4.2_07
    Any suggestions?

try upgrading the image of the switch, also run the latest Java plug in software. this should help.

  • Switch Management

    Hey Folks,
There seems to be two schools of thought when it comes to switch management. From what I've read, two different approaches seem to be recommended. The first is to create a switch management VLAN, and trunk it to all the switches. The second is to create a loopback address, and distribute it via a IGP.
Any advantages or disadvantages? Which one do you use and why?
    Thanks,
    SM

Two approaches are two different kind of design. One is L2 VLAN separated the segment and one is L2 w/ individual NM segment.
What I suggest is to combine both designs that use separated VLAN w/ loopback address that dedicated for the NM traffic. The reason is at L2, it can separated the NM traffic from the production traffic, and for L3, you easily to observe the NM host by different subnet of the loopback address.
However, if there is WAN link that cannot carry VLAN traffic, then you have to use second approach in the WAN link.
And, if it is a L2 switch only, then you have to create a NM VLAN and assoicate the loopback address to this VLAN for NM.
Pease feel free to comment and discuss.
    Hope this help.

  • "Cisco Catalyst Blade Switch 3020 for HP" Best Practices

    Hi all,
Here we use this blade switch cluster for the Data Center server farm. Here we noticed some network traffic delay. when I monitor the up link I can see there is not much traffic in the link. So doubt about the traffic delay. If anyone can help me on this it would be great...
    Thanks in Progress.....

Here in the "blade switch for HP" a request processing application is running in a server. when we use the same type server stand alone with a separate switch it processes 80,000 requests per 4 hours. But when this blade server in the blade switch it only processes near 6,000 requests per 4 hours.
That what I mean like "Network delay"...
That is what I cannot understand.
I have attached the current configuration of the blade switch so you can go through it.
Is there any best practices specific to that type of blade switch that should enable?
    Thanks for your help

  • MDS FC Blade Switch for IBM - Licensing

    Hi,
our customer has got installed the 20-port-switch of the "Cisco MDS Fibre Channel Blade Switch for IBM BladeCenter". He wants to change some of the links now. For that reason he asked me:
    - Is there a fix relationship between a port and a license?
    - Can we use any port as long as we fall below the number of licenses?
    Thanks in advance and regards
    Matthias

    Hello Matthias,
Cisco Fabric Switch for IBM BladeCenter (20 ports; 14 internal 2/4 Gbps, and 6 external full-rate ports) licenses for internal ports are allocated as the ports come up. Licenses for external ports are allocated sequentially.
Refer "On-Demand Port Licensing" section on CLI guide here :
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/storage/san_switches/mds9000/sw/rel_3_x/configuration/guides/cli_3_3/ondport.html
Customer can select the specific external ports he wants licensed.
    switch# config t
    switch(config)# interface fc1/1
    switch(config-if)#port-license acquire
    Thanks,

I am having problems with configuring speed on uplink ports on cisco blade switches (Cisco Gigabit Ethernet Switch Module for HP BladeSystem p-Class). I can configure fixed speed on uplink ports (Gi0/19-22) but after reload I am getting message that this command was rejected:

and then auto-1000 speed is specified.I need fixed speeds on those ports. What is strange that access ports (Gi0/1-18) dont have this problems.I excluded firmare problem, vlan, vtp negotation. The problem is still recouring even if I configure this ports only with speed comand and nothing more. Could someone give me some clues? Thanks

Checked that olso, ports are 10/100/1000/auto Base-TX with half/full/auto duplex, so it seems that it is not an issue. I am getting this problem after this communicate:

  • Etherchannel and STP on HP Blade Switches

    Hi Guys,
I have a 6509 with and etherchannel connection to an HP Blade switch... the channel is made up of two phy ports between the two switches...
When I try ti bring up the link, the 6509 ports go into err-disable and i get the message below.
I have done all (I think?) checks that there is to ensure etherchannle compatibility and STP stuff but still no luck...
can anyone suggest soemthing I do ro check that might shed light on this...
    thanks

    Hi ankur,
thanks for your response. currently the etherchannel operatiosn mode on the 6509 is set to manual, which is the case globally for the 6509 and we have 50 pairs of this blade switch running on this 6509... I don't think that that is the cuase of this issue since this is the only one not forming the channel and goes into err-disable...
the blades also have similar configs in them...
the only thing I see different on ports 10/24-25 is that it has bpdu-guard set to disable while the rest are set to default... could this make a diffrence?
also, does the order of enabling the cisco end and the HP blade end make a difference? i.e. should I bring up one first than the other?
the thing is I cannot "experiment" fully as this is a full prod network...
    Any input si appreciated...

  • Catalyst Blade Switches 3020 For HP Blade Chassis

I was trying to access Catalyst Blade Switch 3020 through serial port to reset the lost password. This Switch is plug-in to HP c7000 Chassis. I followed the instruction from Cisco documentation for this password re-set process as follows.
{ Step 1 Connect a terminal or PC with terminal-emulation software to the switch console port.
Step 2 Set the line speed on the emulation software to 9600 baud.
Step 3 Push the release latch on the front of the switch to the open position.
Step 4 Pull the switch partially out of the module bay until the power disconnects, and then push it in again. The switch restarts when it reseats in the server chassis. The switch performs POST after power is applied.
Step 5 Push the release latch on the front of the switch to the closed position.
Step 6 Within 15 seconds, press the Mode button while the System LED is still flashing green. Continue pressing the Mode button until the System LED turns briefly amber and then solid green; then release the Mode button.
------- Step 6 did not work. System LED neither flashing nor in Solid state. I can not connect through Serial port any more! Any help.....

    Asa,

    Signal = 4, Vector = 0x700
Thank you very much for the output.  They were very helpful.
Here's the story, the blade has been crashing because of the error "Signal = 4".  I have never seen something like this so the only thing I can tell you is that this is a code that simply means "Illegal Opcode Exception".  It could mean that you are running an old IOS and you're hitting a bug.
You can contact Cisco TAC and get them to analyze the crashinfo files.  You can put this thread into the TAC Case so you don't need to repeat your story all over again.

  • Two forwarding root ports on cisco 3120 blade switch.

    Hi,
    <br />
<br />After upgrading blade switch 3120 to 12.2(46)SE, I could see two root ports in which both are forwarding.
    <br />
    <br />Te1/0/1 Root FWD 2000 128.27 P2p
    <br />Te2/0/1 Root FWD 2000 128.81 P2p
    <br />
<br />Where as STP should've kept the other root port as blocked state and named it has Alternate port.
<br />Also started seeing Mac flap messages.
<br />As soon as IOS was downgraded to 12.2(40)EX3, Problem was solved, even messages were stoped.
<br />Seems to be bug, but couldn't get any.
    <br />

    Hi Rob,
I have faced this issue with many enclosures so far and the only option left here is, you need to reboot the enclosure.
This is an issue with the IOS code and you have to open a case with HP to get the appropriate IOS ver. Probably 15.0 code has this issue resolved and I haven't seen this issue further after the Upgrade.
    Thanks,
    Sagar

  • Blade Switch - Layer 2 Trunk Failover

Does anyone know from experience on a 3020 or GESM HP blade switch if downstream ports are recovered automatically when an uplink port recovers from a failure? I have seen references to the downstream ports being put in err-disabled state and was curious if they needed to be recovered manually even after the upstream recovers. Thanks.

Yes, the downstream ports come up automatically when the upstream ports come back active.

  • Newbie: trunk between 6500 and Blade Switch 3020

    Hi,
Beeing newbie , I need advice to setup trunk between my 2 switches.
I would like to use 4 ports as TRUNK
On the 6500 , this is what I have done :
    set port channel 5/37-40 61
set trunk 5/37 auto isl 1-1005,1025-4094
set trunk 5/38 auto isl 1-1005,1025-4094
set trunk 5/39 auto isl 1-1005,1025-4094
set trunk 5/40 auto isl 1-1005,1025-4094
On the Blade Switch 3020 I have done :
    interface GigabitEthernet0/17
    switchport trunk encapsulation isl
    switchport mode trunk
    shutdown
    channel-group 1 mode on
    interface GigabitEthernet0/18
    switchport trunk encapsulation isl
    switchport mode trunk

    channel-group 1 mode on
    interface GigabitEthernet0/19
    switchport trunk encapsulation isl
    switchport mode trunk

    channel-group 1 mode on
    interface GigabitEthernet0/20
    switchport trunk encapsulation isl
    switchport mode trunk

    channel-group 1 mode on
    Will that work ?
Could you tell me if I have to put the trunk port on the same VLAN ?
Many thanks in advance for your help.

We saw that all the ports on the gig switch are set to be trunk by default.
    trunk works
I need to investigate how to setup a ether channel trunk ( to have a 4 gig trunk instead of 4*1 gig )

  • SW_MATM-4-MACFLAP_NOTIF: and 3120 Blade Switch

We had two 3120 blade switches fail on us in our production environment and when we plugged in the RMA replacements, it caused a loop that took down our VM environment:
    Apr 15 17:33:11: %SW_MATM-4-MACFLAP_NOTIF: Host xxxx.56a4.0090 in vlan 2224 is flapping between port Po14 and port Po30
    Apr 15 17:33:17: %SW_MATM-4-MACFLAP_NOTIF: Host xxxx.56a4.0095 in vlan 2224 is flapping between port Po16 and port Po32

Has anyone else experienced this?  In Vsphere the Nics are set up for 'IP hash' and the the OS team claims nothing has changed in their configuration.  We have our blade switches plugged in to an older HP C7000 chassis that has had a number of blade failures of late;  both server and switch.  I'm suspecting this is a chassis issue.
    Thanks!

Are you able to supply some additional information as to how things are connected. For example:
    - Confirm it is the VMware ESX hosts in the blade chassis that are configured with IP hash?
*yes they are configured with IP hash except for 2 nics which they have x'd out...meaning they are disabled.
    - Are the Catalyst 3120 switches configured as a Virtual Blade Switch?
*I don't know, how would I know that?
    - The connectivity from the blade switches to the external network and the configuration of that network
*Each switch stack has 2 10Gig uplinks to Nexus 5K's that were not involved in the mac-flapping.       The loop was between the VM's...
Also, the two switches that were replaced:
    - Were these both part of the same chassis?
         *They were on separate chassis.
    - What was the process to replace them e.g., plugged in, all external cables connected and then configured?
*There were no external cables on these switches except for the stacking cables...no uplinks.

  • Tacacs and visual switch management incompatibility

We have upgraded the IOS on Cisco 2924 switch, configured it for Tacacs, however the visual switch management using Netscape for the above switch doesn't work. Any ideas?

    Hi Balaji,
the management port is assigned to a VRF called "mgmt-vrf", so it does not participate in global ip forwarding because it is intended for out-of-band management. This link showes a configuration example for TACACS:
