Blend Tool Question

Hello Illustrators.
I dont often use the blend tool, but I would like to know, how is it possible(if possible) to achieve a blend to have equal dimensions
when its blending. Ive tried to specified steps and distance, but still Im not getting the desired results. As you can see as the elipse's get smaller
the gap increases.
Thank you.

inquestflash,
thats a cunning trick.
I wonder what you think of the fake blend then. It allows you to have undistorted objects follow a path in the same way as an actual blend or Path Type (warp and Art/Pattern Brushes distort non circular objects).
You may start with an ungrouped expanded blend as suggested by Peter (to get the appearance in the right image), or any set of ungrouped objects that are identical or (quite) different in size/shape, placed at the deisred distance for the end use, then select all objects and:
1) Object>Blend>Options>Specified steps, set the value to 1, and set Orientation to Align to Path (unless you want the objects to keep their original orientation);
2) Object>Blend>Make, create a copy just in case, now you have too many, and maybe some of strange shapes, but not for long;
3) Select the path and Object>Path>Add Anchor Points as/if needed (you will see whether you have enough in 9));
4) Select 2) and 3) and Object>Blend>Replace Spine;
5) Object>Blend>Expand and Ungroup, and delete every second object, Undo 4) and 5) and add more Anchor Points in 3) if needed (too few will result in different distances);
6) Enjoy.
If you need the path elngth and have no way of seeing it in your version, you may download and use the free PathLegth (and/or PathArea) plugin here:

  • Color blender tool and other questions

Hey. I've got Photoshop CS4, which I've been using pretty successfully for digital and pixel art, but there's still a lot to the program that's unknown to me, and trying to google up an answer isn't getting me anywhere. I've got a few questions.
Is there some sort of color blender tool in CS4? By color blender, I mean something that will easily let me pick two separate colors and generate a range of colors that are between them. The tool at http://meyerweb.com/eric/tools/color-blend/ is an example of a program that does what I'm hoping Photoshop can do.
Is there a way to simultaneously view my canvas both zoomed in and at it actual size as I draw? This is mainly for pixel art, where the art close-up can look really different from the actual product. A little actual-sized canvas in the corner of my screen that updated as I made changes to the art in zoom in would save me the time I spend fiddling with magnifying glasses.
Is there was way to keep the smudge tool at full opacity? When using it, smudging edges of color onto a blank space makes them start to get transparent. As of now I just get rid of it by multiplying the layer a few times and then merging, but is there a way to disable that?
If there are no definite ways to do these things, any suggestions or guides you know of would be useful too. Thanks!

    Hello!
Select the gradient tool, it is an alternate tool to the paint bucket one (Hit Shift+G until you see it replace the Paint Bucket tool)
Double-click on the gradient you see in the option bar, you will then get the gradient editor http://help.adobe.com/en_US/photoshop/cs/using/WSfd1234e1c4b69f30ea53e41001031ab64-77dfa.h tml
Double-click on the first color stop to get an eyedropper, sample your first color, do the same with the end one, and the second color.
Once your gradient is created, you'll be able to lay down a gradient, and pick the middle color with the eyedropper tool.

  • Blend Tool Help

After using the blend tool I want to turn the lines into paths and then outline the strokes. How do I do this? Attached are two images. One showing the image and one showing the image when selected. Only the two beginging lines have a path that is editable, how do I break this up so all the lines are editable paths.
    I hope that made sense.
    thanks.

Don't even bother with attachments. They get "queued" which means, as far as I can tell, nothing, except everyone must wait hours or days until the image is available for viewing. Meanwhile, since we don't see what you're trying to show us, we don't respond and your post drops lower and lower until nobody sees it or answers your question.
If you want to post an image use the Camera icon to Insert Image. If you want to post a file for downloading, like a PDF, zip, or AI file, then post it online elsewhere and instert a link.

  • Blend tool to objects with no fill (transparency)

Is it possible to create a blend using the blend tool with one of the objects to be blended being transparent (having no fill or outline)? If not, could someone please suggest an alternate solution? I know I can do something somewhat similar with gradients but I really like the level of control blend provides.
    Thanks much in advance
    Joe Stavitsky

You mean, opacity of the object I'm blending "from"? But the, wouldn't the object I blend "to" still be opaque?
    Thanks again
    Joe
    EDIT
Never mind, you're quite right - thanks so much!

  • Weighted Blend Tool

I would like to see weighting added to the blend tool. So the user can define the spacing to be smaller on one side and further apart on the other, similar to Ease In/Out in Flash.

Yes, that's true and works great if your blend is completely straight. But if your blend follows along a more winding path it doesn't allow you to keep your original curve. In other words, in order to spread out copies at one end, you need to use the Convert Anchor Point Tool on the path and drag out a handle. This changes your path. What if the blend needs to be a certain shape? The bigger the effect you want, the more you'll end up distorting the path you want to keep.

  • Using blend tool to create even transitions between shapes

When I use the blend tool I notice that the blends from large to small and the distance between the objects are based upon the center of the two shapes. I blended the squares on the outside and the gaps between the blended squares aren't even. Is there a way to blend the shapes and have even gaps between the new objects?

the goal would be to create a blended square effect (or any object) to fit a stroke variation of this style
    to this
and the objects would be blended again to this (filled with the squared blended pattern)
if I'm not making sense, which I'm probably not, I can show you what the pattern would look like with the uneven blended squares. It looks way off and far too spaced out between the objects by the time the stroke fades out to its final weight

  • Blend tool vs. Gradient Tool

I am doing up some artwork that requires a blend in the background from blue to white. I originally used the gradient tool but when I got a test print done, I didn't like the "banding" that was visible...it wasn't as smooth as I'd like. Is this a printing issue or would I be better off using the blend tool for a smother gradient? If so, would I set it up with a certain number of steps, or just pick "smooth". I'd appreciate any advice! Thanks.

I'd also ask on what device the test print was made and on what device the job would ultimately be output.
Banding is often caused by proofing devices that require large color space conversions. Lacking sufficient bit depth, the calculations for such conversions can result in dynamic-range-related artifacts, such as banding. Such artifacts are not necessarily representative of actual press conditions.
Adding "dither" as Scott suggests is always a good idea. However, I'd also check with your output service provider as to reasonable expectations and proofing alternatives.

  • Blend tool bug?

    Hi!
I am trying to make a "3D-ish" button by using the blend tool. It works fine on the first two layers-they blend together just fine. But when I try to put a third (gradient layer that is set to screen transparancy before blending) layer on top it won't work as it is supposed to. See below. What am I doing wrong?
When I drag the blend tool cursor over the button no "line" appears. Anyone knows of this "bug" or what I am doing wrong? Please help!

Looks like that object is rotated. Maybe just dragged the rounded rectangle tool in another direction when drawing that object. Use the blend tool to create the blend and click on corresponding anchors with it.

  • Simple Crop tool question... how do I save the crop section?

    Hi,
I have a very simple crop tool question. I'm a photoshop girl usually... so Illustrator is new to me. When I select the crop section I want... how do I save it?... if I select another tool in the tool panel, the crop section disappears and I can't get it back when I re-select Crop tool. If I select Save as... it saves the whole document...and not just my crop section.
Like I said, simple question...but I just don't know the secret to the Illustrator crop tool.
    Thanks!

Either press the Tab key or F key.

  • "Blend" Tool Problems

Hi, I am using CS and the “blend” tool to create a train track but I cannot seem to get the spacing to look right. I tried adding a 3rd railroad tie in the middle but that didn’t work either. Any ideas how I can get more spacing in the foreground and less in the distance?

    Comp,
You may also do this in a simple (or maybe not so simple) 2D way.
Your first and topmost/smallest sleeper/crosstie shaped as a trapezium has a certain height H (basic width of sleeper as seen at the viewing angle) and two horizontal segment lengths, the top length W (basic width/length of sleeper) and the larger bottom length WB; you may wish to adjust the length of the bottom segment to get the desired growth in width; you can see the misfit between the angle and the growth in your image(s) yielding a ragged appearance.
You have to decide the relation between the height and distance between the sleepers, and have the angle at the ends fit the desired growth in width.
If you settle for an approximate solution (which is probably only insignificantly inaccurate) where each distance between sleepers has a certain ratio R to the height (width on the ground) of the previous one, you may:
    1) If needed, adjust the length of the bottom segment (see below);
    2) Effect>Distort & Transform>Transform with Horizontal Scale = Vertical Scale = 100+(1+R)*(WB-W)*100/W%,  Vertical Move = -(1+R)*H (negative value), and the desired number of Copies.
If you dislike the growth of the width, you may repeat 1) and 2), starting with an adjustment of the length of the bottom segment, then recalculating.
If you dislike the ratio of distance to height, you may just repeat 2).
To illustrate, if you start with a first sleeper having H = 2, W = 20, and WB = 21, and a distance ratio  R = 1 (same distance as width), you will get the following values in 2):
    Horizontal = Vertical Scale = 100+(1+1)*(21-20)*100/20 = 100+2*1*100/20 = 110%
    Vertical Move = -(1+1)*2 = -4.
Number of Copies as desired (19 for 20 sleepers in total or similar).
Obviously, the greater the relative difference between WB and W (the further from a rectangle), the lower the viewing angle and the faster growth in the size of the sleepers.
And obviously, the greater the ratio R, the less dense appearance.
Here are images based upon H = 2 and:
    A) W = 20/WB = 21/R = 1 (Horizontal = Vertical Scale = 110, Vertical Move = -4)
    B) W = 40/WB = 24/R = 1(Horizontal = Vertical Scale = 105, Vertical Move = -4), and
    C) W = 20/WB = 21/R = 2 (Horizontal = Vertical Scale = 115, Vertical Move = -6):
You (probably) do not want to know how to do it for full (insignificantly improved) accuracy.

  • Blend tool doesn't create smooth blends - how do I fix this?

    Hey guys and gals,
I can't seem to figure this one out. When I use the blend tool for a smooth blend, the blends comes out jagged and horrible, as if it is doing a step blend rather than a smooth blend. I have used the tool before by either using the shortcut (Alt+Ctrl+B) or using it via the Object>Blend pathway and it worked out fine, but now Illustrator doesn't want to create a smooth blend.
What I'm trying to say is; is there an option that is causing this to happen that I may have accidently turned on, or has my copy of Illustrator gone into stupidity mode and I need to reinstall it?
I've attached pictures of what I mean with the settings I'm using and outputs. I hope your collective minds can smack this one in the face. I'm sure I'm doing something ridiculously simple to cause this.
I'm using CS5 Illustrator and my relevant PC hardware is listed below.
    - Intel i5-2500 3.30Ghz
    - nVidia GeForce GTX 560
    Thanks in advance.

In this case, the sawtooth patterns corrspond to the corners of the large number of different intermediate shapes sticking out.
So basically the shapes straight edges and corners are the cause of my problem, the smooth blending I was experiencing earlier which appeared smoother was actually because I was using a more rounded shape?

  • Blend tool isn't sticking to its shape

Hello, I have been having issues with using the blend tool on my object. If you look at the picture, I had one outer shape that was what I wanted shaded and a thinner shape that runs inside the other. It blends perfectly fine everywhere except at the bottom. I don't know how to explain it or what went wrong but I can't figure out how to make the blend fit inside the shape.

Well, you half fixed my problem. I deleted two points where you said and the big gap between the legs disappeared but it seemed to have broken every other part of the body. Believe me, I've been messing with adding and subtracting points now but it keeps altering between what you see in this picture and back to the big gap between the legs.
Edit: After messing around with it for awhile I got it to fit with the shape. Thanks everyone for the help. My points weren't lining up within the two shapes, I guess.

  • Capture with new MBP, plus Pen Tool Question...

Good Day everyone, I've searched the forums but have not been able to find my answer so I thought I'd post.
    Question 1...
I've just received my new 17"MBP a few weeks ago. With my old PB, I would connect my camera via FW400 and capture the footage to an external LaCie drive via FW800 out of the computer.
Now with only one FW port on the MBP, it looks as though I need to capture via FW800 (4pin to 9pin) and go out to the LaCie via USB? Is this correct? How are any of you doing this. It bums me out that I can't go out FW800 to the drive. I suppose there is always the option of getting an Express Card 34 with FW800 connections?
    Question 2...
Why can I not get my pen tool to work in the timeline? I want to adjust opacity and audio levels but am unable to do this. My old version of FCP (v5) seemed to let me do this. Overlays are 'on'? Any suggestions? I find it easier and faster to be able to do these functions from the timeline, there must be a way?
    FYI...
    New 17" MBP 2.66 w/4GB RAM
    FCP (Studio2)
I'm sure question 2 is just something stupid that I just haven't set up.
    Appreciate everyone's help as always!
    Rene.

To be honest, nobody but Apple knows what Apple is thinking but usb is not a good alternative. I also don't know of too many professional post houses or broadcast studios that have anything to do with firewire infrastructure at all. You can get firewire 800 to firewire 400 adapter cables for cheap, search the internet. You can then daisy chain your camera/capture device in line with your storage device.
The better alternative is to get a express firewire card for your MacBook pro as you mentioned which would create two firewire buses; one for capturing, one for storage. Again, you can search the internet and here's a place to get you started http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Sonnet%20Technology/FW800E34/
I guess I would have thought maybe some research into a product of the expense of the MacBook Pro would have warranted some research about these things.

  • Pen Tool Question...

The Pen Tool is my favorite / go to selection tool. But can it do the following...
I've made a path and converted it to a selection, then filled the area with a color or texture (on it's own layer).
Now I find that I need to adjust (fine tune) the shape I've created / filled with color or texture to better fit how / where it's being used. Is is possible to invoke the path handles and get it to adjust the filled area as you move / adjust the path. (This is not a shape, not using the shape tool.)
I can select the filled path / layer and free transform but that does not give me a fine enough adjustment.
Puppet Warp doesn't really fit the bill either.
A good example of what I want to achieve is similar to when you put type on a path. When you adjust the path the type moves to conform to the changes in the path. I want to do the same thing with the area I filled using the path.
    Possible??
If not, this would be a great feature request!!!
    thanks folks for any input

Just to follow up on your answer....
Yes this works very well for what I'm trying to accomplish.
    Thanks again.
Just an fyi, I'm also a NAPP (National Association of Photoshop Professionals) member.
I posted my same question on the NAPP forum. I still haven't gotten a response for anyone over there.
I'm not knocking NAPP, it's a great organization and I've been a member since 2006.
But I'm pleased with how much faster answers to questions come from this Adobe Photoshop forum.
    Keep up the good work!!

  • Iweb SEO Tool Question Revised

Sorry I thought I should make this question simpler ...
Something has gone wrong with my iweb SEO tool
and it is messing up all the pages (published to a folder)
    that I update with it.
Everything looks fine in the tool - but it does exactly the
same bad thing to every page when I try and use it.
Is there some kind of reset or something that won't lose
all my tags etc? My site is massive and re entering everything
    would take a week.
Thankyou to anyone that has any idea of where I should start?

t does exactly the same bad thing to every page when I try and use it.
    Which is?
Try creating a new domain file with a test site and see if SEO messes that site up the same way.  If it doesn't then there's something awry with your original domain file and website.
