BLOB Column Query

Hi,
I have a CLOB column defined NOT NULL with data in it. Its a huge database of almost 2 TB and the management wants it to be reduced. If I need to SHRINK the contents of this column only on selected rows what are my options ? I will be given specific criteria and for those records I need to get rid of the BLOB content and shrink it. This is what the management desires so dont get me wrong if it sounds stupid. I am looking for suggestions.

After reading your post, a question that comes to my mind is, if the column is defined as NOT NULL, how do you propose to get rid of the data inside the column? You cannot set it to NULL; so presumably you will update it with smaller string like f.ex. "DUMMY".
Is the data causing
1. backup delays?
2. performance problems?
If it is related to backup, then you can evaluate partitioning.
If it is related to performance, then you have other options along with partitioning.

    You're doing exactly what the error says, that is committing with an open LOB. Look at the following piece of code: you write in the LOB, you flush it and then commit. There is no closing of the LOB stream before committing.
    Try putting the tempBlobOStream.close() instruction before the commit.
    // Write the data into the temporary CLOB from the
    he byte array
              tempBlobOStream.write(ba);
              // Flush and close the stream
              tempBlobOStream.flush();
    nn.commit();
              //Close everything
    tempBlobOStream.close();

  • Need to create link to Word Doc in blob column in search results report

    I got the Oracle Text boolean search of word documents in a blob column of a table working.
    Now I need to be able to create a link in the results report.
    I know that Oracle creates a link for each document in the column when you attach a file, I just need to know what the link should be to allow users to open the document in the search results report.
    Right now the application is set to do a search in the attached word documents, and in the results window it shows the names of the people who match the search, but it won't allow me to create a link to their resume in the results report.
    the name of the table is CONTRACTOR_LIST and the blob column is RESUME.
    How would you go about creating a simple link to the word file in the results window?
    Here is the code for the query
    select score(1) relevance, Name, Resume
    from contractor_list
    where CONTAINS (resume, :P1_SEARCH, 1) > 0
    order by 1 desc
    That works, but I can't get it to link to the resume file.
    Here is the code I'm using for the link
    javascript:popupURL("#RESUMEL#")
    This just give me an error page and the the link is
    http://server-namer:8080/apex/[datatype]
    the error is
    Bad Request
    The HTTP client sent a request that this server could not understand.
    Thanks again!

    It is within the table I believe (I'm not a DBA or a developer) since I created a BLOB column and then used the file browse feature to allow users to attach a resume to the table in order to be able to perform a search of the attached documents.
    I'm just having a hard time pointing the link in the search results report to the document in the blob column.
    The information on that page is great if you're trying to create a link to the document on the initial report.
    But I created a query using Oracle Text to run a report that does a boolean search of the attached word documents in the table.
    When it displays the search results, it doesn't create a link to the document and I can't figure out how to do it.
    Here's a link the the instructions I used to create the initial search report with Oracle Text, mind you I only created the index and query, I didn't add in all the link data since they're using documents on websites and I'm using documents in a table.

    If you can help me with this I'd really appreciate it.
    Thanks again.

  • How to generate a .pdf output for a BLOB column?

    Hi friends,
    (Forms 6i)
    I have a .pdf into a blob column and I want to show that .pdf as my report output...
    Example-> The report only have this query:
    select myblob_ column
    from mytable
    the column in database has the .pdf ... but when I execute the report, it only appears some information when I put the item to show as Text... But obviously it's not the ofriginal pdf...
    If I try to put as OLE2 doesn't appear either anything and if I try to put it as an Image, it appears a message error.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks.

  • How to show pdf or word icons for a BLOB column in a report?

    Hi,
    I am getting interested for the blob columns, I have created some columns for storing some pdf drawings and pictures for specific items in a table, it is ok to show a text like 'download' or any other text in the report by setting the following blob attribute:
    DOWNLOAD:TICKET_DETAILS:ATTACHMENT:TICKET_DETAILS_ID::MIME_TYPE:FILE_NAME:::inline:Download
    but instead of texts, I would like to show a small pdf image for my Blob file, or a word image or Excel image, according to the different file type.
    how to do that?
    and instead of inline or attachment this two options, I would like when the user click the image of the file, the browser will show the image in a new window, or a new browser tab.
    I tried the inline option for my file at Google Chrome, but when it showed the pdf file within the browser, I cannot get back to my app by clicking the 'backward' icon at the browser menu, it will stuck there and I have to close the broswer and then login to the app again, instead of simply returning back to the previous page within the app.
    Please help me out.

          END
    END attachment
    FROM ticket_details
    WHERE ticket_details_id = :P102_TICKET_DETAILS_IDPlease note that I am using APEX_UTIL.GET_BLOB_FILE_SRC function to download the BLOB files. The first parameter of this function in my example query is P101_ATTACHMENT, which refers to page item of type "File Browse" on page 101, which is a DML form on table TICKET_DETAILS. Replace it with the appropriate page number. Please refer to "Working With BLOBs Procedurally" section of this APEX 3.2 documentation for more: [url http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E14373_01/appdev.32/e11838/advnc.htm#sthref2199]http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E14373_01/appdev.32/e11838/advnc.htm#sthref2199
    Also I have the gif images representing various MIME types on my file server. For e.g., /i/excel_icon.gif. You can use #WORKSPACE_IMAGES# if you want to.

  • How to know exact size of table with blob column

    I have a table with one BLOB column. I ran this query.
    select bytes/1024/1024 from user_segments where segment_name='GMSSP_REQUEST_TEMP_FILES'

    it gave me 0.125
    It means size of table is 0.125. I have uploaded 3 files to this table. Each of them is of 5 mb. After that I check size of table. but result was same. i.e 0.125.
    Can any body tell me how to know exact amount of space consumed by files. I am expecting following result

  • ORA-00600 error when inserting NULL in BLOB column

    Hi,
    I want to insert NULL value into a BLOB column w/o using empty_blob(), but I am getting the following error upon submission (both through program and upon directly executing it from TOAD/SQL*):
    java.sql.SQLException: ORA-00600: internal error code, arguments: [kxtotolc_lobopt], [], [], [], [], [], [], []
    The query is as follows:
    insert into image_rendering r
    (r.Version_date_time, r.id, r.Name, r.Type, r.Image_url, r.Image_filesize, r.Html, r.Original_Text, r.Redirect_url, r.Version, r.Rendering_size) values
    (sysdate, '1963884', '468x60_1.gif', '0', '225/9-468x60_1.gif', '1471', null, null, null, '1', '30670908')
    In the table r.Html, r.Original_Text are blob and clob columns respectively.
    If I remove the column r.Html (blob) and its corresponding value the following query executes fine :
    insert into image_rendering r
    (r.Version_date_time, r.id, r.Name, r.Type, r.Image_url, r.Image_filesize, r.Original_Text, r.Redirect_url, r.Version, r.Rendering_size)
    values
    (sysdate, '1963884', '468x60_1.gif', '0', '225/9-468x60_1.gif', '1471', null, null, '1', '30670908')
    I know I can also insert the query using the string empty_blob(), but I dont want to do it without using empty_blob() since it will involve changing my generic DB classes.
    The strange thing is that I created another table involving blob and clob columns through TOAD.
    In this table I can insert NULL values in the blob column without any error.
    Is there anything that can be done to insert a NULL into my blob column? Am I missing anything?
    Is there a setting in the database that will allow me to do this? cuz one table accepts null and the other doesn't. Its strange.
    I am using Oracle8i Enterprise Edition Release 8.1.7.0.0
    The query doen't execute through toad or sql* plus or through program (I am using thin oracle drivers: the usual classes12.zip file)
    thanks in advance

  • Problem with download link for a BLOB Column in a "Classic report"

    I am having a problem where I cannot make a download link for a blob column function in a "classic" (non-interactive) report. I went through the tutorial on this topic and it was great help it working out the minor bugs, but I get a 404 error (apex_util.get_BLOB not found). For testing purposes I went ahead and created a an identical report on the same page that is an "Interactive report" and it works like a charm. Same query, same BLOB formatting Mask, pulling data from the same table. So, it really doesn't seem like an issue with the grants, since both reports should be executing as the same user.
    I know it sounds like the obvious answer is to just go with the interactive report and my problem is solved, but the rest of this site uses classic reports, and I don't need the sort features of an interactive report, and the slightly different style of the the report really stands out even if I turn off all the bells and whistles. I don't want to change the css to make them look identical, I just want a regular report to work.

    I eventually found another post: APEX_UTIL.GET_BLOB was not found on this server
    In this post there is the suggestion of putting "dbms_lob.getlength("var")" after the date field in your select. So I changed my query to have it at the end, and now my format mask (DOWNLOAD:table_name:ATTACHED_FILE:FILE_ID::FILE_MIME_TYPE:FILE_NAME:::attachment:Download) works like a charm, in a classic report.

  • How to load externl files (PDF) into BLOB column.  Please help.

    Hi All,
    I've currently been working on loading many external binary files (PDF) into BLOB column. After some digging, I learn that the SQL*LOADER can be used to load data from external files into table. I also got help from another forummate mentioning to use PL/SQL procedure to do so. Since I have not done anything like this before. So, my question is what is the simple approach needed to upload PDF files into a table(there is only one table containing BLOB column in my database). In addition, the LOBs can not be query-able, I wanted to list the contents of the LOBs column to make sure that I did successfully upload data into the database. How can I do that?. I do need your help. Please direct me step by step how to do so. Your help is greatly appreciated.

  • BLOB Column with PDF docs

    I already read a different ways to extract the PDF docs from oracle table and open it through forms. All of them with java classes, webutil integration and dbms_lob.
    But, if I need an other way to show it (select the column and open it) through the forms module, I can do it. Like Developer 6i, we can defined a OLE container field in forms and query the table and show the BLOB data.
    This are my scenerio:
    Oracle DB: EE 9.2.0.6.0
    Developer: 6i Rel 2 & 10g v. 10.1.2.0.2 (for test and eventually for migrate to production environment, with iAS R 9i)
    I already read if I need to use java, dbms_lob or webutil, I need to use it through iAS and in some cases I need to create a DAD.
    But, If have 10g in developer enviroment just for test and I don't want to use a iAS, do I have any other way to select a BLOB column (with a PDF files store in there) from a oracle table and be able to open it with acorbat reader.
    thank you a lot guys and sorry about all this message (related with the same) but I am no a guru oracle developer.

    Rechecked and was not logged on to user, checked the error view and got
    TEXT_INDEX_FRI 03/30/2001 1: AAAIt+AAFAAAAmDAAJ DRG-11207: user filter command exited with status 137
    searched some of the articles here on this error, checked that listener was running correctly for extproc, added to the listener the ENVS=LD_LIBRARY_PATH line
    added roles, resource, connect, ctxapp
    added to PATH and LD_LIBRARY_PATHs,
    but still get the above error
    does work though for simple text insert case, so seems to be related to documents in a blob field. Any other suggestions or queries that I can do to troubleshoot this? Could it be the way it is loaded?

  • Persist document in BLOB column problem

    Hi all,
    I'm having problem with persisting document in BLOB column.
    Using debuger I checked that document.doc contains correctly uploaded file before persist. There are other attributes of document and they are persisted correctly, but when I check blob size in database it size is 1byte which is incorrect.
    After I persist second file, first one get his correct size value, and size of second one is 1byte.
    If I stop weblogic server, second value will never be populated. If I only restart application without restarting server, and then upload third document, size of second one will be corrected.

  • Problem Loading Word documents in BLOB columns

    Hi
    I tried loading the documents in the BLOB column, then indexing and then text serach, but the query does not work or guess that the document does not get loaded
    The table structure is
    table: Content
    feilds
    id number (10) pk
    author varchar2(30)
    doc_name varchar2(60)
    document BLOB default empty_blob()
    loaded data with SQL loader and the file details are below
    the load1.ctl file
    LOAD DATA
    INFILE 'd:\intermedia\data1.dat'
    INTO TABLE contents
    APPEND
    FIELDS TERMINATED BY ','
    (id SEQUENCE (MAX,1),
    author ,
    doc_name
    LOBFILE (CONSTANT 'c:\nandeep\jun_news.doc') TERMINATED BY EOF)
    data1.dat contents is as follows
    nandeep,june news,c:\nandeep\jun_news.doc,
    Any reason why it does not work or what could be the alternative
    -nandeep
    null

    Your are in the wrong Forum. Documents cannot be loaded in iFS using SQL*LOADER

  • Image stored in BLOB column crashes report's engine

    Hi,
    I have a report where I display logos stored in a BLOB column on the DB.
    The report is generated as RTF.
    When images have sizes of 624x168 or 423x324 everything is OK. One image, 1221x224, is crashig the report with a dr. Watson error.
    Any idea why?
    The size of the "bad" image file is 38K, and the "good" ones are about 300K.

    I altered student table to store photoes of students. For this I added STIMG as blob, MIMETYPE,FILENAME,IMAGE_LAST_UPDATE COLUMNS to studentadmitted table. Image stored and displayed in report very nicely. With the following query
    select "ROWID",
    "ST_ID",
    "FIRST_NAME",
    "LAST_NAME",
    "FFIRST_NAME",
    "FLAST_NAME",
    "COURSE_ID",
    "SESSION_ID",
    "CONTACT#" "CONTACT_H",nvl(dbms_lob.getlength(STIMG),0) IMAGE
    from "#OWNER#"."STUDENTADMITTED"
    Images are displayed in column but they have different sizes.Stick to declarative BLOB images as above. They can be resized in reports using CSS. Add a style sheet in the page Inline CSS property:
    td[headers="IMAGE"] img {
      display: block;
      width: 75px;
      border: 1px solid #999;
      padding: 6px;
      background: #f6f6f6;
    }where the <tt>IMAGE</tt> value in the attribute selector is the table header ID of the image column. Setting only one dimension (in this case the width) scales the image with the correct aspect ratio. (The border, padding and background properties are just eye candy...)
    However, if the original images are large then scaling them in the browser this way is a huge waste of bandwidth and produces poorer quality images than creating proper scaled down versions using image tools. Downloading megapixel images and then reducing them to thumbnail size results in pointlessly pushing millions of bytes that will never be seen.
    For improved performance and image quality, and where you require image-specific scaling the best approach is to use the database ORDImage object to produce thumbnail and preview versions automatically. Note that this is not possible in Oracle XE as Multimedia is not included
