Blocking texts/calls explained

In short, there are two ways to block a number.  The first is pretty hard core and many people use it for "safety and court ordered reasons."  The other method is pretty innocuous and is the one some folks may use when the boyfriend or girlfriend makes you angry and you want to give them the silent treatment. lol.
Using the blocking feature from your online Verizon account:
You can block up to five numbers for a maximum of 3 months.  After that time, you will have to repeat the process.  You can unblock them at anytime.  If you use the blocking feature from your online verizon account, depending on what phone they have, when they text you they get an "error message" that usually says "undeliverable."  When they call, this is verbatim what they hear: "Welcome to Verizon Wireless. The number you were trying to reach has calling restrictions which has prevented the completion of your call."  You won't know they attempted to call you and you will not be able to see their attempt to text you.  If you later unblock them, "some messages might come through, but not all. It depends on how old the messages are. If they are within 24hours, they will come up."
Using the blocking feature on your phone:
When you use the blocking feature from contacts on your phone, you will see the calls and messages from the person you have blocked, but they just won't know that you do.  Calls go to voicemail right away and they get the same "undeliverable" error when they send you a text.  Note that "most, not all, Verizon phones have a block feature within the contact
Here is a link from Verizon that vaguely explains how blocking works: http://www.verizonwireless.com/support/blocks-comparison/
Hope this explanation helps!

Thanks for the information vereyezuhn.  This is correct, at this time we do not have an option to block phone numbers and text messages on the Iphone-4. The Iphone-4 is currently not compatible with our Usage Control Feature or Call and Messaging Block Feature.

  • How to block text messages but not calls from a specific number

I want to block text messages from my father but not his phone calls. Is there a way to do this? I have an iPhone 5, but don't want to upgrade to IOS7 yet.
    Thanks!

You have a fantastic phone, joy3141. I double checked features for the iPhone 5 and confirmed there's not a way to block messages from a specific contact without blocking calls too. Our Call & Message Blocking http://vz.to/MqEgqB is a great way to block unwanted contact from specific numbers, but it would block both calls & messages. If your dad is on your account and you're hoping to block all of his text messages to or from anyone, there is a text message block available at www.vzw.com/serviceblocks you can add to his line.

  • Text/call blocking

Hey guys. I NEED an app that blocks sms's and calls immediately. I know apple or the app store offers nothing like this, so I jailbroke my phone and downloaded Cydia only to find out that most of the call/text blocking apps are only compatible with iOS 4 and 5, when I need one for iOS 6. Can anyone help me? Does anyone know of an app that is compatible with iOS 6 and will block calls and texts? (and no, my service provider does not offer this function either).

Ok well thanks for replying anyway! I wouldn't have jailbroken my phone if there was an app available for blocking texts and calls. This is a security issue for me so it's suprising that Apple does not offer this .... I know that Samsung Galaxy offers an app like this. I wish I would have know that before I bought my iPhone 5. Step up your game, Apple! Samsung Galaxy seems to be a better choice in hindsight!

  • Blocking Texts but allow phone calls from specific number?

I have done some research but have not found what I'm looking for.
I would like to be able to block a specific number from sending me text messages but I would still like to be able to receive phone calls from them.  It seems to be a unique situation.  I'm not sure if it is something Verizon can handle or if it's available in a third party App?  Thanks for any info you can provide.  I have an HTC Droid Incredible if that matters.

I know that the free number blocking offered by Verizon Wireless will block both calls and texts from the blocked numbers.
There might be something in the Play Store, but I'm not aware of any specific applications.

  • Is there anyway to manage my contacts or an app so that I can temporarily block text messages at certain times of the day?

    Hi,
I am wanting to block text messaging that I sometimes receive from clients after hours, and I want to know is there an app like there is for android phones that has lists that you can create so certain people can be sent an auto reply when they send you a message?
I don't want to block the numbers completely just at weekends and/or after hours and I still want to be able to receive phone calls from those numbers as an option.
I am on the Vodafone NZ network

  • Are blocked texts still "billed" by the carrier?

My mother does not a texting plan because she never texts and only receives texts from spammers. While I know that the blocked texts from spammers will not appear on her iPhone, will they be counted by the carrier (in this case AT&T) as an incoming text message, even if it is not technically delivered?   Obviously it will save her the headache of receiving unwanted texts, but will she still be billed for them?

She can forward them to AT&T directly at short code 772-6.  She will then get an automated reply asking her to reply with the senders "sent from" address (these texts with AT&T are all free as well).  If they respond that they cannot identify the sender (happens often with short codes), she can call customer care at the number in the text and ask them to block that short code for her account.
Since she is paying per text, I think that reporting throught the automated SPAM report system will also automatically credit her account for the billed spam messages, but you might want to call AT&T and confirm that actually happens.

  • Block Unknown Call / SMS

Everything that I have read suggests the you cannot block individual 'spam' calls or text .. is this is the case, it's not acceptable.
I have a Blackberry Z30 .. there MUST be a way to block individual calls or text. You can on other makes of phones so why not a Blackerry Z30. You can block all calls, but that's a little overkill.
I have been a loyal user of Blackberry phones over the past 6 years, if this cannot be resolved soon, when my current contract is up, I will be switching to another make ..
    Please advise ..
    Thanks

  • Need to block spam calls from 201-*

I'm getting many spam calls from numbers like 201-340-1009, but the right-ward numbers keep changing.
I'm told this is someone mis-using (or just using) PINGER.  I'd like to just block all
calls from 201 area code (New Jersey, not waiting for Snookie call).  Can I do this?
    If not, any other recommendations?
    Much Thanks,
    Dave

You can also list your cell number(s) on the U.S. government's Do Not Call registry by going to https://www.donotcall.gov/default.aspx. I believe this helps, as I haven't been getting spam calls or texts (though I never got very many) after giving my registration there 31 days to become effective. If they do persist in calling, this gives you a mechanism to report them. This way you only have to register your number, not all the numbers that might be trying to call you.
And (of course) when we go to that site we learn that "Scammers have been making phone calls claiming to represent the National Do Not Call Registry. The calls claim to provide an opportunity to sign up for the Registry." D'oh!

  • HT201229 When I  block a caller what message do they receive ?

Just wondering what the other parties see or are sent when they are blocked ?

Understand that the iOS 7 "Block" does not truly block the call, it is more like a selective "Do Not Disturb".  Calls and text from the "blocked" individual are still sent to your phone, but the iPhone does not send an audio or visual notification to the user.  The caller will still go to your voicemail box (if it is set up).  To truly block calls and texts, you have to contact your cellular carrier.  There is usually a fee from the carrier to block a caller, but the person will receive a verbal notification from the carrier that they cannot complete the call.

  • Blocking incoming calls

Good Afternon. Would someone please explain the 10 phone number limit for blocking incoming calls? I have used Vonage [which has no limit] Optimum on line [100 limit] Time Warner [30 limit and it cleared the list every 90 days] Fios only offers me 10 ? Are you aware of the problem with telemarketers? I don't think so. I'd like Fios to be more proactive in allowing me to defend the peace and quiet of my home, by expanding this area. It's quite pitiful compared to other vendors I have used, and it is the Main reason that I am not renewing my contract with Fios when we are done. Thank you.

*60 (Call Block) is the easiest way to block an incoming caller, however to my understanding only local, landline numbers can be blocked with *60. To use it, simply dial *60 and follow the prompts. But call Verizon first to set up a monthly subscription or you will be charged per use charges which can really add up.
A really great option which I have on my landline phone is called Do Not Disturb. You can make a list of up to 15 phone numbers which are the only people who can get through to you when you have DND turned on. (You can turn it on and off anytime you want through an 800 number.) NO other calls, including telemarketers, "unavailable" numbers, etc. can get through. If you have home voice mail you can choose to send the blocked calls to your voice mail so they can leave a message. Otherwise they will get a recording saying "The party you are calling does not wish to be disturbed at this time." There are also two other rejection messages you can choose.
Also you can choose a 4 digit pin to give to people you want to be able to get through but I have never used that option; I just put them on the "allowed numbers" list.
