Bluetooth crashed menu bar

I recently opened up my powerbook and turned on my bluetooth mighty mouse. Normally they find each other and away we go. This time it didn't work, and the menu bar (with the time, volume control, bluetooth, vpn etc. icons) hung. Spotlight and my SMART reporter app stayed working OK.
I force-quitted the SystemUIServer process, which manages the menu bar, but it was not able to recover.
I know the problem is with bluetooth, so I was wondering if there was a way of deactivating and reactivating it from the command line, without restarting the machine. I can't use System Preferences, because anything bluetooth there just hangs (there's no Bluetooth preference item, but Keyboard and Mouse has a Bluetooth tab which doesn't work). When I look at /System/Library/PreferencePanes, Finder is sometimes unable to report the file info for the Bluetooth.prefPane. There's also nothing in /Library/Preferences that references Bluetooth, though I thought there was supposed to be a preference there (to trash when things go wrong).
I'm reluctant to restart because I run simulations over a number of days that won't recover through a restart, and I really don't want to lose a couple of days hard work on my powerbook's part. Any ideas?

Open the Terminal application in the /Applications/Utilities/ folder, and run the following:
defaults read com.apple.systemuiserver menuExtras
which will produce a block of text. Copy this text, paste it into TextEdit, and remove the line relating to Bluetooth from the list. Next, replace read with write in the command, append the modified text to it, and put the completed command into the Terminal. Log out and back in, or quit the SystemUIServer process again.

  • Mountain Lion Upgrade - Finder crashes, Menu Bar disappears ****

    Hi,
I have a mid 2009 MBP running Lion perfectly well, and I mean perfect. No crashes, nada. Upgraded from Snow Leopard.
I have tried twice before to upgrade to ML but both times had to revert to Lion.
    Key problem:
"Finder quit unexpectedly" then menu bar disappers and I can't use keyboard anymore (so no terminal killall etc) so have to hard reboot
And Yes, I also tried all the regular suggestions to these issues (seem to be common) such as delete preferences, delete DS_Store, permissions resets etc with no result
So I was perfectly happy developing for iOS on Lion
Then comes iOS7 and XCode 5 will only run on ML so now I'm forced to try upgrading Lion to ML again.
    1. 1st time I did it without changing anything. Errors Key problem: "Finder quit unexpectedly" then menu bar disappers and I can't use keyboard anymore (so no terminal killall etc) so have to hard reboot
    -> revert to Lion
    2. Uninstalled all menu bar extensions, and deleted all login items. Result -> errors
Key problem: "Finder quit unexpectedly" then menu bar disappers and I can't use keyboard anymore (so no terminal killall etc) so have to hard reboot
    So I've tried the testing Linc Davis posted here https://discussions.apple.com/message/17642350#17642350 with following results;
    Tried Alternate Account:
I set up new account and for a while it worked. I was able to deploy to iPad to running iOS7. Yay. I thought it was ok.
Then I installed java in order to run SmartGit and also Carbon Copy Cloner and bang...same errors start appearing.
Uninstalled them, but no joy, started acting up.
    Tried SAFE Mode:
It works! Perfectly. But I can't run in safe mode all the time, as I need some of the features it disables (audio, network as I develop cross platform with Win7)
So I tried Linc's 3rd  test with is for kernel extensions etc, with results posted below.
I would really appreciate any guidance as to how I can get this working. It is extremely frustrating and time wasting, and I have no faith in OSX ML as a stable platform for development. I don't want to buy another machine, not just the expense, but also from trawling the threads people with current and new machines are also reporting similar problems to me with no resolution that I can see. Whatver ever happened to "Graceful Degradation" not "System crashes with no help whatsover"!!
Anyways, frustrated rant over, here's my results. I'm going to try again, but any help on optimising my Lion install before I do would be VERY welcome!
    ty in advan
(Note: These results are from my newly reverted Lion clone, and I have not removed any menu bar apps or login items as yet. These have been run on my prefectly working Lion install)
    Step 1
Copy or drag -- do not type -- the line below into the Terminal window, then press return:
    kextstat -kl | awk '!/com\.apple/{printf "%s %s\n", $6, $7}'
    com.Cycling74.driver.Soundflower (1.6.6)
    tc.tctechnologies.driver.TCNear (4.1.3
Post the lines of output (if any) that appear below what you just entered (the text, please, not a screenshot.)
    Step 2
    Repeat with this line:
    sudo launchctl list | sed 1d | awk '!/0x|com\.(apple|openssh|vix)|edu\.mit|org\.(x|postfix|ntp|cups)/{print $3}'
This time, you'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up. You don't need to post the warning.

  • Mac Keeps Crashing - Menu Bar Disappears and Nothing Will Run

    I'm having major problems with a macbook, 2.2Ghz, 4Gb RAM, 160Gb Hard Drive, 10.5.2
I'm not sure if this is a software bug, something to do with the fact that I've recently installed 4Gb RAM, replacing 2Gb that I installed a few months ago, or possibly something with parallels desktop running Vista, I recently installed several vista updates.
Basically, there are several ways in which the computer keeps crashing - I've pretty much figured out how to make it crash now. When it crashes, the menu bar disappears, sometimes leaving the shadow beneath it and the right hand icons, sometimes not, and the dock becomes useless - nothing will run. I cant use expose etc or switch between windows. Pressing Cmd Alt Esc to open the force quit dialogue box bring up an empty box - implying that nothing whatsoever is running! I have to physically shut down the computer using by holding the power button and start it back up again. When it starts up, it sometimes continues to refuse to work until i restart it again. There is no message whatsoever about having restarted or crashed.
The computer will work fine for most processes, but the things making it crash are:
    1. Entering Time Machine (I've had to stop backing up and disconnect my time machine drive now)
    2. Using parallels desktop - I run windows vista, and it'll work fine until I launch any applications that are more complicated than just solitaire or freecell - windows messenger and powerpoint will cause the crash. OSX won't be working, but windows will continue to work fine - I can finish what Im doing and shut it down, although keyboard input no longer works. I then have to restart OSX.
    3. Running DVD Player in Front Row has now started bringing up the grey screen of death and telling me to restart.
Obviously these things can be avoided - but I can't back up my computer, I can't watch DVD's without crashing the computer, restarting and then going straight into DVD player, and I can't use the copy of Vista on Parallels that I've just spent a fair bit of money on.
I've tried taking out each of the 2Gb Kingston RAM cards, which came brand new and sealed, to see if one or other is possibly faulty, but they are both causing the same problems. I don't have the previous RAM cards to hand to test.
Has anyone here experienced anything like this before, or can anyone help me?

    Hiya Pricerob,
Your problems seem to be exactly the same as the issue I'm having when it happens. Can I ask how much RAM you have installed, and how frequently the problem occurs? I'm curious also because I'm planning on buying an imac soon, and was planning on installing the 4Gb of RAM I have into that when it arrives - the £300 apple charges for the upgrade is a little excessive.
I mentioned that I've tried to download the latest firmware update, but it keeps crashing upon completion. Have you had any issues like this?
Another really obscure thing I've found regarding the firmware update is that it saves an install file to my Applications/Utilities folder. This file would cause my mac to crash. Every time I opened the utilities folder, it would crash. I moved it to the desktop, and had major issues where the computer would crash immediately upon startup because the file was there, and the same problem once I managed to get it in the trash. It was only by accessing the macbook in target disk mode that I was able to delete the file and use my computer as normal again.
Anyway, considering the problems I've had, would anyone say it's worth risking installing the RAM into a new imac when it comes, considering that the problems with my macbook are ongoing even when the RAM is removed and I can easily reinstall the operating system on a brand new computer, or should I leave it and buy some more?

  • How do I delete Bluetooth devices that only show up from the drop down menu bar, and not in the Bluetooth preferences devices?

I recently attempted, and failed, to pair/link/use my Playstation 3 Controller with my 13" Macbook Pro Retina (OS X Yosemite 10.10.1), and now I've been left with three unwanted 'devices' in my Bluetooth's menu bar, that don't show up in the Bluetooth's preferences devices, so I am unable to delete them from there.
The devices in question are labelled as "00-00-00-00-68-2f", "00-00-00-00-68-7f", and "00-00-00-00-68-ef".
I've read that resetting the PS3 Controller will remove these, but every attempt at that has failed as much as trying to use the Controller for gaming.
Any help with this little issue will be much appreciated, as I've found it very annoying.
    Cheers

  • Please help. The Finder has crashed I guess, no icons on the desktop, menu bar and dock flicking. Can't open any app, folder or even do a right click.

Good day, I could really need some information. Thank you in advance.
    I have a 2008 24" iMac, running on 10.5.8.
I want to describe the whole issue. The only thing that changed in my routine and made it crash was that I bought a new Apple keyboard, with a wire this time, before I was using a bluetooth one, and a new wireless Logitech mouse. After I successfuly connected both, while browsing in Safari, the computer totally lagged. All I could do was to manually restart it. When I started it again, it said that the "ruby" application has quited unnexpectedly. After clicking ignore, I observed that the icons on desktop haven't loaded, the menu bar is constantly reopening itself, I can't right click, if I try to open Sistem Preferences that is as far as it will allow me to go, if I click anything else than, it closes system Pref. and leaves me again with this flicking menu bar, which of course I can't even click and an empty desktop. I couldn't see if the problem is only related to my user, as there is only 1 user on it. I tried to create a new one, but I get the problem mentioned above.
I try to see here on the forum if other people have had the same problem, but what I got was minor cases, they can still use finder or an app, everytime I open something, it dies and I only can restart the poor thing
I hope I don't have to delete all my info on my drive, that would be a big problem for me.
    Solutions, recommendations?
    Thank you.

    Hi Paul,
One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for problem in Safe Mode...
Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive
    Reboot, test again.
If it only does it in Regular Boot, then it could be some hardware problem like Video card, (Quartz is turned off in Safe Mode), or Airport, or some USB or Firewire device, or 3rd party add-on, Check System Preferences>Accounts (Users & Groups in later OSX versions)>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed. Or an errant process eating up RAM.
Check the System Preferences>Other Row, for 3rd party Pref Panes.
Also look in these if they exist, some are invisible...

  • Menu Bar crashing every 10 seconds

The menu bar crashes every 10 seconds (crashes-10secs-restart-crashes) and I cant find anything that will make it stop. I have run repair permissions, uninstalled istat menus, logged in to another account, and gone though the library and deleted everthing to do with istat.
Also restarted multiple times but it doesn't fix the problem. All functions/features that are controlled from the menu bar still work (ie. airport, bluetooth). Learning from previous experience i have uploaded a youtube video of the problem. www.youtube.com/watch?v=UovWVjxZvK0

Go to /Users/yourname/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systemuiserver.plist and delete that file. Then, restart.

  • Mozilla crashed yesterday and now bookmarks are not showing along the left side of page as they did before. They are on the menu bar but hubby does not like this location. Anyway I can get it back to the left side of the page?

This spring we changed from IE to Mozilla after upgrading to Win 7. Everything has been fine with Firefox until yesterday when it crashed when I attempted to open an email. Since then the bookmarks (or favorites as my husband calls them) have not been in their usual place which was along the left side of the page. They are located in the Bookmarks bar at the top of the page but husband prefers the old IE way which we had until yesterday PM. Is there any way that we can get them back to the left side of the page other than going back to IE? Now that I have gotten used to Firefox I like it just fine.

*You can open the Bookmarks in the sidebar via View > Sidebar > Bookmarks (Ctrl+B)
*You can open the History in the sidebar via View > Sidebar > History (Ctrl+H)
Press F10 or tap the Alt key to bring up the "Menu Bar" temporarily.
You can find toolbar buttons to open the bookmarks (star) and the history (clock) in the sidebar in the toolbar palette and drag them on a toolbar.<br />
Firefox 4 versions and later have two bookmark buttons with a star in the Customize window.<br />
One star button has a drop marker that open a Bookmark menu.<br />
The other star button without the drop marker opens the bookmarks in the sidebar.<br />

  • Crash led to my iBook no longer having the translucent menu bar setting

Basic situation is this. I was running 10.5.3 perfectly well on my iBook G4 1.33ghz/1gb RAM. One day it didn't want to wake from sleep so I had to hold the power button down to power it off then back on. It started up as normal except that the menu bar had become translucent again (in 10.5.3 I had chosen to turn that stupid 'feature' off). But now the tick box is missing from the Desktop & Screen Saver pref pane, and even re-installing Leopard and updating to 10.5.3 then 10.5.4 from scratch has not bought the box back. Any idea what on earth has happened and how I can fix this? It passes the Hardware Test CD perfectly. It's as though it now thinks my Mac isn't capable of supporting that setting (when I add a Dashboard widget the ripple still happens for example).
    Thanks!

This is a big NONO. You essentially crashed your OS by forcing it off while it was running. Yes, sleeping is running.
    Your OS is damaged.

Run the DU and repair your HD and permissions.
If that does not help, boot into the safe mode (hold down shift key on boot) and when you get to the login screen click on restart.
It could simply be a corrupt .plist file.
In the worse case, you can reinstall your OS previous to your forced crash using your TM backup.

  • Photoshop cs3 crashes when I touch the Menu Bar

Photoshop cs3 on my MacbookPro OsX 10.7.5 crashes when I touch the Menu Bar. Ive reloaded it with no result. Any ideas?

You're crashing deep inside Apple's OpenCL code (which CS3 doesn't use directly), apparently because Apple calls it as part of their drawing code.
You'll have to contact Apple about this - but of course, they'll blame the bugs in Apple's code on third parties.

I just recently bought a new iMac and installed Leopard but I am having a problem with the Bluetooth, Airport and speaker icons on the menu bar, they keep flashing, and when I went into system preferences I found that each items checkbox to show in the menu bar was unchecked, and when I tried to check them they kept flashing to unchecked. I hope this doesn't sound too confusing, but it's driving me mad.

I don't know if this is going to help anyone, but I found this message after I encountered the very same problem. I had just upgraded to Leopard and everything was fine except the flashing Bluetooth, Sound and Login icons on the right hand right of the Finder menu. Also, the clock wasn't visible at all. As Kevwadd said, enabling these items in System Prefs did nothing, as they would uncheck themselves as soon as I checked them.
After trying just about everything, I decided to disconnect my external drives and hubs to see if it made any difference? Hey presto, when I disconnected one particular Lacie firewire drive, my menu items reappeared. The strange thing is that my Mac could read the data quite happily on the drive, but having it connected was definitely the cause of the problem. So I backed up the data on it and reformatted it. After that it's been fine.

  • Bluetooth icon not showing up in menu bar

Usually, the Bluetooth icon always shows up in my menu bar upon start-up. Lately it has not been appearing. In my system preferences, the show blue-tooth icon in menu bar is checked. If I uncheck it and then check it again it shows up where it is supposed to be in the menu bar. But if I restart my Mac it is missing again. At the present time I am not using any Bluetooth devices but would like to know how to get the icon to appear every time so that I know that it is working properly. Can anybody answer my question or has anybody else noticed this? Thanks.
Mac Mini   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   PowerPC 1.5

Choose Go to Folder from the Finder's Go menu and enter ~/Library/Preferences/ as the folder's location. Once this folder has appeared, move the item named com.apple.systemuiserver.plist to another folder, log out, and log back in.
Alternatively, add the item Bluetooth.menu in the /System/Library/CoreServices/Menu Extras/ folder to the list of login items for your account in the Accounts pane of System Preferences.

  • Illustrator bug- menu bar all messed up, and it keeps crashing

I have the weirdest bug on my trial version- the menu bar on top appears with $$$ signs and all messed up, and crashes constantly. I tried to delete and reinstall illustrator (I downloaded a trial version of the basic creative suite with Illustrator, Photoshop and InDesign, but had the bug only on Illustrator. I even reinstalled Leopard (and in the first installation it was a brand new iMac), which also did not help, so I have no idea what to do. Has anyone else had the problem or knows what to do?
    Thanks!

i had continual illustrator cs4 freezes in relation to the menus and some file types as well. (win 7 prof 64 bit)
But I found it it worked in a newly created user profile fine.
After having shelled out 3500.- eur for the masters colletion, I was rather dissapointed to find that i have to dig into my pocket for support when the software breaks. The solution is pretty simple assumabley known and could have been answered in two lines of text instead of the useless prefab answers i got.
But first I have to join the general gripe about the stability of illustrator and flash in paticular. It is obvious that each product is created by different teams who do not share common standards. Inexplicable.
Quark never cared about their customers while they were market leader either, remember that, Adobe?
Their frustration became your success. It might pay to remember that part of your history.
I solved the problem by replacing the entire settings folder with the one from the functional profile
    C:\Users\user-name\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Adobe Illustrator CS4 Settings
save any custom color sets, etc first.
three days of hair pulling for a 12 second solution.
    Thanks, Adobe!
My motivation to pay another 1200.- for an upgrade is somehow shrinking very, very quickly.

  • The corner of my menu bar keeps crashing

The time in the corner of my menubar is frozen at the time at which I last restarted my Mac. When I move the mouse pointer over the time, the pointer turns into the spinning beachball. The rest of the menu bar works fine, it’s just the time part that keeps crashing. If I restart, the clock re-freezes at the time of the restart. The chime on the hour still works properly. I can open Date and Time in System Prefs, but the options I select in the Clock Options section keep getting deselected when I switch out of it.
I tried deleting the com.apple.systemuiserver.plist file in my ~Library/Preferences Folder, and the com.apple.systemuiserver.000a9597ad54.plist file in my ~Library/Preferences/ByHost Folder and restarting but this didn't fix it.

    Hi Timothy,
Did you try to trash the com.apple.MenBarClock.plist
you can find it in >Home>Libray>Preferences
    Good luck ...
