Bluetooth Serial and Cisco Console connections?

This may be the wrong forum for this, but network management was the closest fit i could find...
(First off, I agree that console connections are not preferred, SSH, HTTPS, SNMP all have their advantages, but when something goes down or stops responding to normal methods the amount of time and frustration that can be saved by not having to search for "that one laptop that has a serial port" or "my specific laptop that has the USB-Serial driver installed" is invaluable.)
With the proliferation of tablet devices (ipad, cius, samsung's proposed, etc.), add to it a serious lack of serial ports on most laptops/netbooks/etc being released.  It's getting harder and harder to connect to console ports on cisco devices.  USB to serial adapters fit the bill for now, provided you had the right drivers to run the adapter on your device (read: doesn't address tablets and smartphones).
I understand that the cisco console connection is considered "legacy" and that USB connections are becoming more popular with newer Cisco devices, but in the meantime it would be nice to manage my slice of the millions of "legacy" devices out there.
Bluetooth serial seems to hold promise, though the serial features of bluetooth aren't typically incorporated into most devices right now.  What i guess I'm looking for is a way to manage my router and switch console ports from a smart phone or tablet device.
Has anyone seen anything like this out there right now?
I would think that Cisco would be interested in marketing such a feature with their new Cius, or an iPod or Android app.  Even if it cost a couple of bucks for the adapter or the software, it would be well worth it to be able manage these devices in a pinch.
Thanks to anyone that can help!
JM

I agree, it wold be handy to have.
One thing some of us use is iSSH on the iPhone or iPad. Straight across the in-house wi-fi LAN if there's a working one in house or via the VPN tunnel if not. The use cases of no w-fi, no VPN or an unresponsive box are still not addressed by that solution though.

  • Brand new IMac 27 bluetooth mouse and keyboard not connecting for eight minutes after start up.

I have a new imac 27 that has worked flawlessly for three weeks.
All of a sudden, when starting up the mac boots fine but the bluetooth mouse and keyboard are non responsive. This state is maintained for between 7 and 8 minutes then both mouse and keyboard start working and continue doing so for the rest of the day....until the next restart and the whole saga repeats itself.
Both sets of batteries are fully charged.
I have scoured different sites and tried any suggestion that made any sense, to no avail. All I am able to do at the moment is to do the time, wait the 7 to 8 mins. and then all's good.
My first Mac and this is very annoying especially as Apple must be aware of this issue but no solution is forthcoming!
    Any suggestions/workarounds would be great.
    Thanks

if you are using rechargeable batteries sometimes they don't stay charged for as long as they should try using alkalaine batteries and see if the issue still persists.
also try doing an SMC reset, the following article tells how to do this:

  • EA6500 and CISCO Cloud Connect

This issue seems to happen about once every week or so.  I get the router settings all configured and I'm able to access it from Cloud Connect and from the APP on my smartphone.  After about a week, it's no longer accessible from cloudconnect, I can access it from my smartphone, but it shows that there are no devices connected (when they are actually connected).  The screen for cloudconnect will come up after I sign in, but it just has the circling dots in the center of the screen saying "waiting" and it will do this until I close out explorer.  The only way I've found to resolve this is to reset the router and set everything from scratch.  Any ideas?  Thanks.

Check on the firmware on the router and update it. Reset the router manually through the reset button then reconfigure it, http://homekb.cisco.com/Cisco2/ukp.aspx?vw=1&docid=2b4150ad548347ce8a451b1170f36e47_How_to_manually_...

  • Apple (MAC) and Cisco Flex Connection deployments

    Good Morning,
I have some questions regarding flex connect deployments with environments that are purely Apple (MAC).   The area is about 10,000 sq feet top floor office space in NYC.
We havea bout 5 access points (unfortunatley vetically mounted) covering this space. The issue wea re having sort of seems like a roaming issue. We lost an AP that was servicing 80% of the cleints which caused all sorts of troubles with clients. They would not connect tot he other APs and would throw "timeout" errors.
Is there some log I could check to see what might have been going on?
Is there any recommended deployment guide for Apple (mainly mac book pros etc) environments?
    Any real world suggestions?

  • Bluetooth keyboard and mouse connectivity problems

I have an Apple bluetooth keyboard and Mighty Mouse connected to my Macbook Pro 13", running ML 10.8.1.
The keyboard and mouse will constantly disconnect and re-connect on their own every few minutes. I'll see the "connection lost" notification, and then shortly after the "connected" notification. Also, even when the keyboard is connected, it often becomes unresponsive and/or strange things happen, such as the special characters menu appearing above the cursor (which I believe there is a keyboard shortcut to invoke, but I'm not doing that; it appears on its own).
    This never happened in Lion.
Any idea what's happening and how to fix it?

  • Rocketfish bluetooth keyboard can't auto connect after snow leopard upgrade

    Hi,
I have one of the newer model 2GHz Mac Mini's which I bought back in March. I've been using a Rocketfish model RF-ABTKB bluetooth keyboard (which I had been previously using on a windows system before getting the mac). Up to now, the keyboard had worked fine. Whenever I booted the mac, I'd use my bluetooth mouse to go to the bluetooth menu, scroll down to "Rocketfish Bluetooth Keyboard", and then select "connect" out of the sub menu, then would click the "connect" button on the underside of my keyboard and it would connect, every time.
I bought Snow Leopard on Friday & upgraded my machine. Since the upgrade, I no longer see the "connect" option for the keyboard in the bluetooth menu. The only option I see now in that sub-menu for the keyboard is "Open Keyboard Preferences...". If I go to the preferences window, click "set up bluetooth keyboard" at the bottom of the window and go through the pairing process again (going through the discovery process, entering the PIN that the mac generates, etc) it pairs and works fine (I'm actually using it to type this post). If I look at the keyboard sub-menu in the bluetooth menu after it's paired/connected, the "Disconnect" option is now available. The disconnect option itself is no surprise, it had been there in the past, but I thought it's odd that I can still see the disconnect option but not the connect option.
When I disconnect the keyboard (by either selecting that Disconnect option or by just not using it for 5 minutes & letting it go to sleep) the keyboard disconnects, the "shadow icon" fades on to the screen showing the keyboard is no longer connected, and I can go back to the bluetooth menu & still not see the same Connect option that used to be there before the upgrade.
My generic bluetooth mouse (doesn't have a brand name) continues to work with no issues. I called the support number for Rocketfish (which is really just a consumer electronics sub-brand of Best Buy), they said that their keyboard is fully compliant with Mac OS X and if the connect option is no longer showing up for the keyboard in the bluetooth menu, Apple must have done something that changed the way the mac is handling bluetooth.
Also, I did try removing the keyboard from the Bluetooth control panel in System Preferences and re-adding it from scratch, no change.
    Anybody have any ideas???

    Hello N:
I suspect that there has been some sort of incompatibility introduced. However, since this is an Apple forum, I recommend that you pursue the problem with "rocketfish." If is suggested troubleshooting steps, I might confuse the issue further as I would be focussed on Apple devices.
FWIW, no such problem has surfaced with Apple keyboards or mice. I am not trying to sell you one, I do not work for Apple.

  • Macbook pro does not respond to bluetooth keyboard and mouse at login screen

i've seen this question floating around and i don't think i've found one that has been resolved. i'm hoping someone may have an answer by now.
i do not have this issue when i boot into windows 7 (bootcamp) the macbook pro responds to keyboard input and mouse input immediately on the windows 7 login screen. when i boot into mac, there is no response from either. i've seen suggestions of waiting for 30 secods. i still get nothing after waiting for over a minute.
what i do right now is use the built-in touch pad and keyboard of the macbook pro to get past the login screen. once i'm logged in, i can see that the bluetooth devices are not yet connected (the three dots that go across the bluetooth symbol at the top right of the screen are not yet there). then after a while, maybe about half a minute, the bluetooth keyboard and mouse are connected and i can use them normally.
it is not a big deal but it is very annoying.
i am using a logitech bluetooth mouse (v740) and an adesso bluetooth keyboard (wkb-4000bm). i also tried an azio bluetooth keyboard and had the same issue. all these keyboards are made for mac.
    thannks in advance.

just a correction, the keyboard and mouse don't always automatically reconnect once i'm logged in. most of the time i have to go click the bluetooth icon at the top right of my screen, select the mouse and then select "connect". i have to do the same to the keyboard.

  • Issue on Cisco Unity Connection after performing 'utils ntp restart'

    Hello everybody.
There's a client with Cisco Unity Connection 8.5.1.10000-206. After doing a 'utils ntp restart', the following message showed up:
Communication is not functioning correctly between the servers in the Cisco Unity Connection cluster. To review server status for the cluster, go to the Tools > Cluster Management page of Cisco Unity Connection Serviceability.
The client states that there was no service for 5 minutes and wants to know if performing this task shoud be disruptive or not and if there is any official document from Cisco stating this.
See SrvConnUnity_1.jpg sent by the client after performing the ntp restart.
Right now the service is normal (see SrvConnUnity_2.jpg attached). The client also sent a 'utils ntp
    status':

Could anybody help me with this? What steps should I take? Many thanks in advance.
    Best,
    Patricio

    Hello Patricio,
On the command line guide you won't see any downtime requirements for the Unity Connection server:
Command Line Interface Reference Guide for Cisco Unified Communications Solutions Release 8.5(1)
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/voice_ip_comm/cucm/cli_ref/8_5_1/cli_ref_851.html
    Utils ntp restart
This command restarts the NTP service.
    Command syntax
    utils ntp restart
    Parameters
    None
    Requirements
    Command privilege level: 0
    Allowed during upgrade: Yes
Also on the caveats i do not see any particular mention for this: (Caveats could be found applicable to CUC)
Release Notes for Cisco Unified Communications Manager Release 8.5(1)
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/voice_ip_comm/cucm/rel_notes/8_5_1/cucm-rel_notes-851.html
Breaking up the output of the "utils ntp status"  there are are two considerations:
    admin:utils ntp status
    ntpd (pid 10899) is running...
remote           refid      st t when poll reach   delay   offset  jitter
    ==============================================================================
    *127.127.1.0     LOCAL(0)        10 l   16   64  377    0.000    0.000   0.002
First, you are using the ip address 127.127.1.0 which is the referenced used for the local system clock, the asterisc means is the preferred option as there is no other IP available. This is not a good practice and not recommended.
Secondly the stratum is unreliable, meaning too high to reach or too low to be accepted by Unity Connection.
If you would happen to run 'utils diagnose test' you would have probably seen an output as the following example below:
    admin:utils diagnose test
    Log file: platform/log/diag1.log
    Starting diagnostic test(s)
    ===========================
    test - disk_space          : Passed (available: 25680 MB, used: 7849 MB)
skip - disk_files          : This module must be run directly and off hours
    test - service_manager     : Passed
    test - tomcat              : Passed
    test - tomcat_deadlocks    : Passed
    test - tomcat_keystore     : Passed
    test - tomcat_connectors   : Passed
    test - tomcat_threads      : Passed
    test - tomcat_memory       : Passed
    test - tomcat_sessions     : Passed
test - validate_network    : Reverse DNS lookup missmatch
    test - raid                : Passed
test - system_info         : Passed (Collected system information in diagnostic log)
    test - ntp_reachability    : Passed
    test - ntp_clock_drift     : Passed
    test - ntp_stratum         : Failed
The reference NTP server is a stratum 11 clock.
NTP servers with stratum 5 or worse clocks are deemed unreliable.
Please consider using an NTP server with better stratum level.
Please use OS Admin GUI to add/delete NTP servers.
skip - sdl_fragmentation   : This module must be run directly and off hours
skip - sdi_fragmentation   : This module must be run directly and off hours
    test - ipv6_networking     : Passed
And on the RTMT (Real Time Monitoring Tool) you would have seen a Critical event:
    Condition:
The best external NTP server, , is stratum , which is unacceptably high. External NTP servers must be <= strata 8 and should be <= strata 5. NTP server strata can be verified using the CLI 'utils ntp status' command ('st' column). Try using different NTP servers.
    Problem cause:
All specified external NTP server(s) have unacceptably high stratum values. Network issues exist or the designated servers have unreliable stratum values.
Information is self explanatory and therefore reassures the need of having a NTP different from the server itself.
By the snippet you sent we can know that it is the publisher server, as the Subscriber polls this information from the Publisher.
Installing the Operating System and Cisco Unity Connection 8.x
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/voice_ip_comm/connection/8x/installation/guide/8xcucig020.html
"Cisco recommends that you use an external NTP server to ensure accurate system time on the publisher server. Ensure the external NTP server is stratum 9 or higher (meaning stratums 1-9). The subscriber server will get its time from the publisher server"
Documentation also reaffirms the need for that NTP to be accessible otherwise your system can be degraded.  Some addtional information which would be interesting to know is:
    - Why did they had to restart the NTP in the first place?
System Requirements for Cisco Unity Connection Release 8.x
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/voice_ip_comm/connection/8x/requirements/8xcucsysreqs.html
"A network time protocol (NTP) server must be accessible to the Connection server"
On the Cisco Unity Connection Serviceability> Tools> CLuster Management screen shot you sent i see that the ports were "Not Available" and that the customer stated "there was no service for 5 minutes".
By no service did they mean that over the phone they heard a disconnected tone or a failsafe message?
Additionaly after the servers resolved from SBR the Subscriber never recovered entirely as it did not start the Conversation Manager service.
Bottom line if they are able to reproduce it then it would be worth a while checking with TAC

  • Bluetooth and direct cable connectivity

    Hi All,
Have a iPhone 3GS, and a Ford Territory.  It has both bluetooth connectivity for phone, and a native cable connetion for the iPhone/iPod.  My issue is thus...
If I have bluetooth turned off on my iPhone, and have the phone connected through the native connection, I can run the iPod functions of iPhone through the vehicle console.... but I cannot make a call... there appaears to be no functionality to make a call through the native connection.
I then turn on the bluetooth on the iPhone.  I then switch to the phone screen in the car... voila, I can make calls.... unfortunately though, if I switch to the iPod screen to of the car, the music is running, but no sound....  if I then swtich make to the phone screen, it comes up "bluetooth streaming" and music comes out...
basically, having the bluetooth connection for phone knocks out the ability to have the functionality to run your iPod through the console screen
I hope people understand what i am saying... any help would be great

First of all, you are in the wrong section. However, to determine which section is the correct one for you, you need to know the product name of your PowerBook. Is it a 12", a 15" or 17"? I guess it is a 15". Is it a Aluminium or a Titanium? Or is it even a PowerBook G3?
Have a look yourself. A PowerBook G3 (Firewire) and a PowerBook G4 (Titanium series) uses the old original Apple AirPort Card which can be found on the Internet resellers. The PowerBook G4 (Aluminium series) uses the current AirPort Extreme card.
Then go this way and use the search feature there in the upper right. Here at the Bluetooth section, you are wrong with your Belkin beast.

    Hi Henrik
depend on what you need or what your security policy says for my lab gear i use 60 minutes. because i know how can access this. if you have gear outside in insecure space set it to a minimum or disable the console. everybody how can access your gear can break in. simple restart and boot w/o config. and you are in.
it realy depends how secure is your space and how much security you need.
and than the settings for policy have to match, what sec do you have if your console login and logout is secure. but when you restart you can simple break in by starting w/o config and than load it.
