Bmpanel Arch theme composite[Solved]
Hey, uhh, I checked the wiki for the composite enabling on nvidia-96xx cards, and rebooted and all, but bmpanel will still not render the arch with transparency. Any ideas?

You need a compositing window manager (Compiz, KWin4, and I think the new Metacity), or an add-on compositer (xcompmgr, bang, ecomp, ecomorph).

Setting wallpaper/bmpanel in openbox? [SOLVED]
I am on my first succesful HD install of Arch wirh Openbox right now and I have been documenting some of the things that are giving me issues. If you are curious about how I went about with my installation you can check this thread out:
http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=76315
One of the issues Im having is with themeing and autostart programs. I did a little research and found that in order to have, for instance, my bmpanel and desktop wallpaper start up with x I had to make an autostart.sh under my ~/.config/openbox/ and add this within:
# Run the system-wide support stuff
. $GLOBALAUTOSTART
# Programs to launch at startup
nitrogen /media/vault/Wallpapers/107320-Tranquility-1680.jpg &
xcompmgr -c -t-5 -l-5 -r4.2 -o.55 &
# SCIM support (for typing non-english characters)
export LC_CTYPE=ja_JP.utf8
export XMODIFIERS=@im=SCIM
export GTK_IM_MODULE=scim
export QT_IM_MODULE=scim
scim -d &
# Programs that will run after Openbox has started
(sleep 2 && bmpanel arch) &
So thats what I make it look like. I have nitrogen and bmpanel (with arch theme) installed and working correctly. The problem is that when i startx and the script runs, it just opens nitrogen with no images selectable. Also bmpanel does start with arch theme but it is not transparant like in the photo available where I downloaded it.
I do have composting available as I have my nvidia drivers installed and i checked that it is working in the terminal, but I am at a loss as to why they arent working correctly. I have checked the documentation for this and found it a little lacking? Anyone know where to go from here?

Don't know bmpanel (never liked it myself), but the
problem with nitrogen is that in order to set wallpaper from the
commandline you have to include a switch. Chose whichever of the
following best suits the image in question.
nitrogen --set-best
/media/vault/Wallpapers/107320-Tranquility-1680.jpg &
nitrogen --set-centered
/media/vault/Wallpapers/107320-Tranquility-1680.jpg &
nitrogen --set-scaled
/media/vault/Wallpapers/107320-Tranquility-1680.jpg &
nitrogen --set-tiled
/media/vault/Wallpapers/107320-Tranquility-1680.jpg &
Or, if you rely on nitrogen's GUI wallpaper interface, you can just
use the following:
nitrogen --restore &
This will set the desktop to the last image you selected via the GUI
interface.
Then if you want to get fancy, you can add a menu item to your openbox
menu to launch the nitrogen selector:
<item label="Wallpaper">
<action name="Execute">
<execute>nitrogen ~/wallpaper</execute>
</action>
</item>
Also never used bmpanel, so can't be of help there. Tint2 and pypanel
both have nice transparency. -
Arch 64 & fglrx [SOLVED]
Hi everyone,
I have Arch 64 with a Ati HD4890, I followed all the necessary steps I seen on wiki to install fglrx. I install (with order):
- xorg
- remove libgl
- install catalyst-utils
- install catalyst
- change xorg.conf with aticonfig --initial (here is my xorg.conf).

Am I doing anything wrong? Any Idea?
Thanks.

Hi, I've been designing a theme for IceWM, based on the Archlinux's current artwork. I started the design from scratch using Inkscape and Gimp, and implemented it by modifying SIlverXPs theme configuration files. You can download it here .
Here are some screenshots:
Hope you liked it![/url]Wow, this is really nice.
Too bad that the last update to this was 2 years ago and since then Arch's logo has been updated as well... it would be great to have an updated version of this theme.
I suck at Gimp. -
Win 7 and Arch dual boot [SOLVED]
There are other help threads about this, but I didn't want to hijack somebody's elses thread. Sorry for the long post, I just want to provide as much detail as possible:
I am trying to use Grub (not Grub2) to dual boot between Arch Linux and Windows 7. I had this working before using Windows XP, but when I reinstalled Windows 7 over Windows XP, Grub would no longer boot Windows.
1. If I manually choose the hd containing Windows 7 to load first in my BIOS, Windows 7 boots no problem. If I manually choose the hd with Grub and Arch to load first in my BIOS, I get a Grub menu, which boots Arch, but not Windows 7. Ideally, I think, I would like to have the internal drive with Arch ranked first, then the internal drive with Windows second in my BIOS. At least, that's how I had been doing things before blowing away XP and installing Windows 7.
2. Here is the (abbreviated) output of sudo fdisk -l
Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/sdb1 * 2048 206847 102400 7 HPFS/NTFS
/dev/sdb2 206848 169934847 84864000 7 HPFS/NTFS
/dev/sdb3 169935570 1953520064 891792247+ 83 Linux
Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/sda1 * 63 1028159 514048+ 83 Linux
/dev/sda2 1028160 3084479 1028160 82 Linux swap / Solaris
/dev/sda3 3084480 44050229 20482875 83 Linux
/dev/sda4 44050230 488392064 222170917+ 83 Linux
3. From that, I can tell that Arch is installed on sda: sda1 = boot partition; sda2 = swap; sda3 = root partition; sda4 = home partition.
Windows 7 is installed on sdb: sdb1 = system reserved partition (created automatically by Windows 7 during install); sdb2 = Windows; sdb3 = separate ext3 partition
4. I am comfortable editing Grub menus. This is an excerpt of mine:
# (0) Arch Linux
title Arch Linux
root (hd0,0)
kernel /vmlinuz26 root=/dev/disk/by-uuid/blah-blah-blah ro
initrd /kernel26.img
# (2) Windows
title Windows 7
rootnoverify (hd1,0)
savedefault
makeactive
map (hd1) (hd0)
map (hd0) (hd1)
chainloader +1
5. The error I get is "error 15: file not found" If I change the line reading "rootnoverify" to "root", I get the same error plus the bit about "filesystem unknown, partition type 0x7" so I think I'm pointing at the right partition/drive. That is, I know that partition type 0x7 is an NTFS filesystem/Windows.
6. I messed around with the Grub entry for Windows. I modified the root line to read "rootnoverify (hd1,1)", but things still did not work. I wasn't sure if I needed to bypass the "system reserved" partition created by Windows, or not. I also flip-flopped the two map lines, so they read:
map (hd0) (hd1)
map (hd1) (hd0)
That did not work either. I tried these combinations together, but Windows still would not boot. Always the same error message: "filesystem unknown, partition type 0x7"
7. I think I have a mapping problem given that Arch boots fine and Windows boots fine from the BIOS. However, I'm not sure how to fix this. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Culley
Edit:
Okay, so I fixed things. I just removed a bunch of stuff from my Grub entry. Even though Windows is not on the same drive as Grub, it does not need the map sections like I thought. I also removed the savedefault and makeactive entries, not sure if that made a difference or not. My new grub entry looks like this
# (2) Windows
title Windows 7
rootnoverify (hd1,0)
chainloader +1

Dual boot Arch and Windows XP (arch installed first) [solved]
I recently moved over to arch from Ubuntu, and would like to install Windows XP so that I can dual-boot between the two. However, my arch install created four partitions on my disk, and I can not create another one.
I would rather not have to reinstall arch, as setting it back up would take days on my current network connection. Is this possible? While I have installed XP over Ubuntu in the past (and am more than able to reform the MBR after the XP install) I have absolutely no experience with disk-partitioning, so concise instructions would be very much appreciated.
errata: my laptop has 4 gigs of RAM, so I don't think I need the SWAP partition. I am hesitant to delete it outright however.
this is a Gparted screenshot, running off of a Ubuntu live CD. The 60 gigs of unallocated space is where I was hoping to install windows.
Last edited by spotdart (2009-02-05 17:13:55)What's on /dev/sda4? If you can blow away the last partition, turn the whole thing into an extended partition and then you can set up as many logical partitions as you want inside the extended partition. I suppose Arch is probably on sda4 and if that is the case you could move arch to sda3 first--there are lots of posts in the forum about how to move an installation of arch from one place to another.
Edit: Beat to the punch again. Yeah like he said you might want to delete the swap partition and then incorporate it into the 1st or third partitions so you can free up that last one.

[pcmanfm] How to deactivate no-icon-theme-message [solved]
Hello guys,
I don't need any icon theme because I use a shell in most of the cases. But as I have to use pcmanfm it always appears that annoying message. Can it be deactivated in any way?
Thank you in advance

Wine for Arch Linux? [SOLVED]
I used sudo pacman -S wine. It said target not found. Is this not in the AUR or something? There is no download option from the wine website. I read some people were able to get Assassins creed to run normally with wine, so I wanted to try it out.

GTK theme changing [SOLVED]

Do I need to edit something? I put my custon icon in gtkrc-2.0
gtk-icon-theme-name = "MaXo-ReMix"
and it works fine.
Also I have tried with gtk2_prefs and it changes the "preview" window perfectly, and when I click "apply" it says: Will overwrite ~/.gtkrc-2.0 , I click yes, but the theme doesn't change. Also the .gtkrc-2.0 file contains the same things I had written. -
Suspend removed form arch kernel ? [solved]
I don't know why Software suspend was removed from default arch kernel.
Can it be re-enable ?
I have recompiled arch kernel with addind this options :
CONFIG_PM=y
# CONFIG_PM_DEBUG is not set
CONFIG_SOFTWARE_SUSPEND=y
CONFIG_PM_STD_PARTITION="/dev/hdx"
but there is no /sys/power/disk or /sys/power/mem on my system
(it was working with 2.6.13 arch kernel)
did I missed something ?ok, I think that initrd is the problem.
http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Initrd
I have found some scripts but it's only for swsusp2

Anybody knows how to activate vanilla swsuspend1 on arch ? -
Problems with installing arch-0.7. (solved)
*GOSH* Me is so dumb sometimes... My testing computer, is not PII. It is only pentium. No wonder it aint working. My mistake, sorry.
Hello all !
I have a problem with installing arch-0.7.
When i am booting from CD, it starts to load kernel and so on, but it always restarts.
I have tryed starting it up with arch -noscsi, but it doesnt change anything. It restarts anyway. I get no error messages what so ever, it just restarts.
If there is anyone, who could help me out, give me a hint or something, i would really appreciate it. I am new to linux, and while browsing different distros, i found this one. And, it seems really good, so i decided to try it out, to see if it "does my work".
Thanks in advance.
Disc-DevilTnx !
I've found the pre.07-i586.iso... So, now i could try this out.
http://archlinux.veloxis.de/i586/iso/ar … e-i586.iso
If i understood, things right, i can still use sources? Even though, not every app is in the repository, i am able to use sources right?
Anyway, Tnx alot again, for giving me the gr8 tips. -
Discrepancy between Pacman FTP and Arch website ? [solved]
Hi,
I just wanted to report out what I think is a discepancy between the pacman FTP base and the Archlinux website.
I installed kde yesterday pacman -S kde and replied yes to the question asking me if I wanted to install all kde group components.
I ended up with gwenview which belongs to the multimedia category on Archlinux website, while kiosktool and kshutdown, which are in the kde category on the website were not installed.
Unless I am confusing the group and category concepts, it appears to be a discrepancy. Wouldn't it be clearer if those concepts matched and bore the same name ?
Let me know. Thanks. As you thought, you are confusing group and category. A group is a bunch of similar apps that can be installed at once.
For example, you can list all groups available by doing:
pacman -Sg
However, categories aren't the same. If you try pacman -S multimedia for example, it won't work. -

Ill definitely look into that, thanks for all the help -
Hi guys. In celebration of Arch's new design, I finally decided to learn more about making wallpapers and GTK+ themes. Unfortunately, I had to basically hack an existing GTK+ theme (Smooth-Line), but it still looks good and matches the overall feel of Arch Linux, in my opinion.
I've created a collection of files that themes the following things:
GTK widgets
Fluxbox
desktop background
urxvt
The goal was to integrate seamlessly with the website's look and feel. I think I've succeeded:
Unfortunately, I don't have an xcf of the background, so I doubt it can be scaled easily. I guess it's one of those things you don't think about when a project starts out being 'just for me'.
I've uploaded a g-zipped tarball of the files you'll need to use the theme.
http://sporkbox.us/linux/arch-theme.tar.gz
* The sample .Xdefaults file allows you to change the colors for urxvt. Feel free to delete all the stuff before the "color#" lines.
* gtkrc goes wherever you want it, but should be put in /usr/share/themes/Smooth-Arch/gtk-2.0/ if you want theme switching apps to recognize it.
* The background can be put anywhere.
* Arch-Linux goes in /usr/share/fluxbox/styles or ~/.fluxbox/styles.
I hope you guys like it.

Sure! GNOME Live: GTK Theme Tutorial
Beat me to it.
I've got loads of half-finished themes here (or did have; they might have gone when I switched to Arch) - once I found QtCurve, it just seemed too much hassle. It's not totally configurable from the GUI, but it certainly beats poring over gtkrcs until your eyes hurt.
Edit: I meant to add that the wallpaper works quite well cropped to 5:4 if you take the right end. The big Arch logo loses its bottom left point, but it's not too bad.
