Books or document for learning linux (oracle)

Hi,
Before I drill into Oracle DBA on Oracle Linux, I want to build some basic linux knowledge first. Which book is the best for me to start with my goal? tutorial like?
Thanks
Fei Li

You don't say what your background is, so I'm guessing you are Microsoft Windows literate. You can use the GUI to do some administration acts such as re-arranging folders and searching for files. With the Linux desktop, you will probably feel quite at home after a very short while.
There is a totally ginormous amount of Linux on the Internet, but be careful: a lot of it is stale. (Read that as was-once-right-but-now-is-wrong.) This is a pretty good place to start browsing:
http://www.linux.com/learn/new-user-guides
Go down to the bookstore and get "Linux for Dummies".
Now, that being said, there is quite a different skill set needed to know about Linux "under the hood", but I don't think you are concerned about that for now. So download a live-cd version of Fedora (http://fedoraproject.org), put it in the CDROM, and reboot. You are now running Linux without doing anything to your hard drive. Browse around the desktop, check out the various programs. Most Windows applications have Linux counterparts under different names; navigate the menus based on what you want to do, not looking for a particular application program name.
You'll run across frequent references to other distributions (Ubuntu, for one) but I recommend Fedora because it's the most similar to Oracle Linux (OL). Oracle Linux is a server distribution, not a desktop distribution. That means OL probably won't recognize some of your laptop hardware, or do gazillions of triangles per second on the video screen. Avoid frustration by using a distribution oriented to a desktop/laptop paradigm.
Once you get comfortable with Linux on a live-cd, you'll want to install it to your hard drive. This can be a challenge because Windows usually squats on the whole disk drive leaving no room for Linux. The only tricky part of a Linux installation is to convince Windows to move over and make room. Fortunately, you don't need to do this.
Having more than one operating system on a disk is called "dual-boot". Dual-boot is so-o-o last millennium :) What I recommend is to download VirtualBox (http://www.VirtualBox.org) onto your Windows or Fedora box and create an Oracle Linux virtual guest. There are even some pre-configured OL setups available via that web site or the http://eDelivery.oracle.com distribution site.

  • One Book or Document for start on Database Administration

    Hi
Before anything thanks to everybody that contribute on this forum.
May you introduce me book or document for start on Oracle database administration?
    Thanks in advance

Besides the 2-Day dba guide, you should have a read of the Concepts and Administrator guide from the docs at http://tahiti.oracle.com . In addition, read these following books as well,

  • Which book is best for learning Lightroom 5 for a complete beginner?

I'm an Aperture user and as everyone has heard the news, a lot of us are considering switching over. I went through the Apple pro-training aperture, logic, and FCP books and loved the format of those. I've been reviewing my options for LR5 books on Amazon and I see a couple, Kelby, Evening, and The Adobe Classroom in a book. I kind of like the classroom in a book format as it resembles the Apple book's format. Which book is best for learning LR5, from a complete beginner's perspective?

I would avoid Kelby like the plague. I didn't like his book, I felt his chapters on the Library module were effectively useless and off the mark.
I would start with the free e-book Lightroom 5 - Free Quick Start Guide PDF eBook | The Lightroom Queen
I would also watch some videos at Products | Lightroom | Adobe TV

  • Need help in creating documents for Contacts in Oracle HRMS

We are trying to add documents to Contacts in Oracle HRMS. (11.5.10.2)
Navigation: Oracle HR Super User -> Fastpath -> Documents of Record
Search for a Contact -> Manage Documents of Record -> Create Document of Record.
In Document Information -> Type is mandatory field but the LOV is not returning any values.
The LOV works fine for both system defined and custom document types when trying to create documents for Employees or External Contractors.
But we would need to be able to add documents for Contacts also.
Please let us know if this expected functionality or if there is any setup that is needed.
Any help in this regard is highly appreciated.

You do not get a virus from googling - just make sure it is a reputable site you are purchasing from. Many are free to download.
I don't use clipart myself - having a Mac and numerous editing, painting, and drawing apps, I create my own art. You can also usually purchase this type of thing in a computer store (big box store) - they sell software as well as hardware.

    Hi,
I need to know from where I can get Capacity planning document for Forms on Oracle Application Server for Intel/Solaris/Aix arch. Please Advise.

    Hi,
we have several developers working with developer suite 10g. Our OAS runs on Linux as yours. All our developers work locally using windows-pc's. We have a samba share we use to move the developed sources to the linux box. On the linux box with have some scirpts to compile the sources and move them to the runtime-directory.
The final integration test in then done using the installed application on the oas.
This works without having any problems for more two years now.
btw: Be aware of the problems you will run into when moving an application from windows to linux:
    -> All filename ar Case-sensitive
-> the writing of module-names in OPEN_FORM, NEW_FORM, CALL_FORM must match exactly the filename (in other words: call_form, open_form and new_form is also case-sensitive
-> Attached librarys are also case-sensitive, even if there are shown in uppercase in the module-navigator.
    hope this helps.

  • Oracle 11g Express for Ubuntu Linux

Just like Oracle provided express edition for linux for 10g, will there be an easy to install express edition of 11g for linux? I mean via apt-get or debs or synaptic. Of course, synaptic being the easiest I have EVER seen oracle install on linux.
I want to try Linux as a developer, but installing 11g on linux the normal way is a pain. I do not want to spend days trying to install 11g on linux. I want to get busy doing something with 11g such as write queries and design databases.

    Yes, sigh.
If only people could write what they mean!My apologies for not being adept at the language. But we have both been wrangling with my lack of
language skills for years, so we should be used to it by now.
    >
Are you saying EE when you mean XE, perhaps? No. I meant EE using synaptic. Which does not exist. Which may explain why some people think the installation is difficult. The tools they have learned are not there and the fight to find or learn the alternatives is not pleasant.
And even the simple stuff may seem. difficult. Some people, including modern developers with IDEs, are very concerned about the difficulties of editing in Linux. In my Oracle on Linux courses, I see grown men near tears when I tell them to edit sysctl.conf ... you should see the visible relief when I describe gedit or kate.
You have been doing the baseline install for years - Back in the Red Hat 9 days, I'd been handing out the HJR Linux install (with your written permission) in my classes for years. So I expect us to get it done in a short time. Cookie-cutter boot, thru install Linux & Oracle, to tnsping shouldn't take us (you and me) more than 1.5-2.5 hours. (Especially if all we want is a basic data dump.)
But ... reading the docco, translating the steps into a manual sequence, and finding and running the synaptic equivalent to the documented rpm commands - aka a synaptic install - can take days. Heck, just reading the docco to get it straight under a certified distro can take days.
After that, OUI is simple, and (if the pre-reqs are clean) nearly fool-proof.
BTW - why do we have to fight with the pre-reqs? Why can there not be more variants of the SUSE-supplied orarun.rpm to do all that manual stuff?

    Hi,
There is not an specific guide for ECC 5.0 upgrade, just the guides specific for your OS/DB combination, they can be downloaded in https://websmp204.sap-ag.de/instguides but you should use the Unix/Oracle document,
