In Two Pass VBR Best DVD (bit rate defaults to 6.2mbps), if I pump up the bit rate to 9mpbs or higher, will my DVD quality increase? File size is not an issue -- it's a 15-20 minute video.

In theory, yes.
However - +and this is key+ - increasing the bit rate past a certain point will reduce compatibility with many set-top players. For the most part, so long as you're using Dolby Digital audio, you can make due with increasing the average to, say, 6.5 mbps. I personally would not advise going higher than 6.5 mbps unless you're only using the DVD for playback on systems you know you can control (your home or you mac).
Also, there is a certain point of diminishing returns with encoding. The 90 preset (6.2 & 7.7) is already at the high end of things.

Stumped - Video Bit Rate too High Error

I just upgraded to FCP 7x and I am trying to burn a disc on DV Studio Pro. It runs through the rendering fine, then when it is ready to burn it shuts down and says the video bit rate to high. So I went to the manual and the manual suggested changing the codec to Apple Pro 422, something like that. I did and am now still getting the same error. This has never happened before and I've been using FCP for 6 years. Anybody know what to do or has had a similar problem?

I think you may have misread that. All SD DVD's are made from m2v files for picture and ac3 or aif files for audio. Pro Res is an editing codec.
This is my quick and easy how to make a first play SD DVD.
Just send the sequence to Compressor (Right click the sequence and send or export to Compressor). From Compressor choose the settings for DVD Best Quality 90 minutes (If your project length is longer choose a longer time). Submit the files. This will create 2 files. An m2v for picture and ac3 for audio.
Bring both of those files into DVDSP. Add the files to the empty track (a green box). Right click the track and select first play. Build the DVD then Burn.

Rectangular Pixel Setting: Where? (also tips for higher quality?)

The bottom line: Where can I find the setting -- in Final Cut, in Compressor, or in DVD Studio Pro -- to use rectangular instead of square pixels on export (or burn or wherever)?
The story: I'm trying to burn a DVD for a friend of our kids' jazz concert. It looks great on computer. Once in DVD Studio Pro's simulate function, though, all the the performers look slightly stretched. They look that way on TV, too. My understanding is that this is due to the difference in computer and TV pixel shapes and that there is a setting somewhere to address it.
These are my settings in Compressor. If that helps. And, if anyone can recommend settings for higher quality (I'm getting some stepping which looks lousy on big TVs), I would love to hear them

Suggestions for bit rate for books on cd

Hi
I'm trying to clear some room on my ipod. Thus far I've been importing everything at 192. I'm hoping to reimport some of the books on cd that I've put on and would like some suggestions as to how low of a bit rate I can use without affecting sound quality too much (I tried 96 and really couldn't tell the difference).

For spoken word recordings, 32 kbps is generally considered an acceptable setting.
And, for what it's worth, that's the Bit Rate for Audiobooks purchased from the iTunes Store.

PCM problem - Muxer Bit Rate Too High

I'm continually receiving the error "Muxer error Bit Rate Too High." I've narrowed it down to the PCM audio that I'm using. I know many would recommend that I switch to .AC3. Unfortunately, that is not an option.
I received audio from 3 sources. From an audio post house, the quicktimes produced on my mac and the encoded PCM files from the Maestro real time mpeg encoder. The weird thing is that the PCM files from the real time encoder work fine. If I remove all the audio, but leave the PCM from Maestro...there are no issues.
I have even gone as far as outputting from FCP to dbeta and then re-encoding with Maestro and that didn't work.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Erik, you may be about to hate me, but I am just making sure I understand the process of elimination, you deleted all audio from all tracks and ONLY left the PCM audio on the main track and it did not build? And the same thing for each of the menus (all audio out of the project except for a menu at a time?)
1.) Not sure how you made the menus or you default preferences within DVD SP, but if the encoding rate for menus was high and it was a motion menu the spike could still happen.
2.) If the steps were as above, take a look at the build file on your computer to see where it is crashing out and/or watch the log to see what is being muxed when the projects crashes
3.) If in fact that leaving just the PCM audio in the track by itself (not the 5.1) you may want to delete preferences and the MPEG/PAR files that DVD SP creates and also repair permissions. Then take the PCM and try rexporting from Quicktime to AIF and use a different name for the file such as "SecondTry.aif" so it is clear it is the other file.
BTW which version of DVD SP are you running and which version of QT?

MUXER Bit rate too high

I am in the process of creating a PAL version of an existing NTSC DVD
I created PAL-compliant video files from iMovie.
Then, I took the existing NTSC DVDSP project, and:
- deleted the existing video files from the clips and the Assets
- Set the video standard to PAL
- Saved the DVDSP project under a new name
- Imported the PAL video files as assets and attached them to the clips.
I left the audio files as is (all AC3)
I kept the same menus (Menu1 has a PAL video as a background)
When I try to build, I get an Muxer Bit Rate too High error message right after the Auto play segment is processed (see log below)
The Autoplay segment is a slideshow made up of jpeg pictures with a "cube" transition. There are two audio streams and two subtitles streams (one in English, the other in French).
I never had that problem when burning the NTSC version. What do I need to change?

Dual 1.25 G4 Mac OS X (10.3.9) DVDSP 3.3

While waiting for an answer, I tried a few things.
I solved the problem by re-doing the slideshow for the Autoplay segment.
I believe that the issue was the fact that I had converted the slideshow into a track in the NTSC version.
That track had to be removed and re-created in the PAL version (just like any other video asset).
Hoping that this will help someone else.

I have created a video from motion and used compressor, best quality 90 min, my audio is ac3 dvd studio says bit rate too high, any ideas?

It's probably telling you the truth. If the only thing on your track is a single video assett and a single audio assett, try the 120 min setting or manually reduce the avg & max bitrate in the inspector.

Bit Rate for Mixed angle DVD

What bit rate will give an decent quality image if there are 4 video streams (v1-edited video,v2-4 source angles), 1 ac-3 audio stream, 1 mpeg1 audio stream. Three of the video streams are alternate angles that popup for brief ( 1 to 5 minutes ) periods of time in a 1 hour wedding ceremony. I guest the safe bit rate for all streams is around 8.5, the manuals say the max is 10.3 mbps. Can I mix bitrates for video in a mixed-angle track or do they all need to be the same?, is four video tracks just too much info ?

Hello, I don't have a Mac yet, but am going to get the mini soon and do some acoustic/keyboard stuff in Garage Band to get back into recording. What is the sample and bit rate for the new version? I had read that older versions were 16?

The sample rate is fixed at 44.1kHz. The bit depth (audio resolution) is selectable at either 16 bits or 24 bits.

Best average bit rate & max bit rate for DVDs playing on laptops...

I encode and burn many DVDs for use in regular DVD players....usually in the half hour range and have been encoding with Compressor 3 using these specs:
6.6 average bit rate
7.8 max bit rate
Those same DVDs, which play flawlessly in the DVD players, can occasionally hiccup when played from a laptop. Should I change the max bit rate from 7.8 to 7.7. or lower? Is that the biggest part of the equasion that may affect a laptop's ability to play without choking?

How is image quality affected by an 8-bit image with 256 levels of brightness VS. a 12-bit with 4,096 levels? Is there a reason to not want the extra levels of brightness? Does this affect how colors are represented or just their brightness levels?

Bit rate is not the proper term in this context, and what I think you wanted to ask about is bit depth. Bit rate is the number of bits/second at which the image is sampled. A slow readout (low bit rate) enhances image quality. In scientific imaging systems the bit rate can be adjusted, but with most regular cameras it is fixed. One needs a sufficient number of levels so that the difference in adjacent levels will not be apparent to the eye (posterization). The number of required levels varies with the gamma of the image, and bits are lost when going from a linear raw image to a gamma 2.2 image. See Bruce Lindbloom's levels calculator. When rendered to a 2.2 gamma space a 12 bit raw file goes from 4096 levels to only 249 levels.
If you don't edit images, 8 bits is usually sufficient. With a wide gamut space such as ProPhotoRGB, the distance between adjacent color levels is greater, and posterization of colors may result if the image is edited to any extent. This posterization is often most evident in smooth areas such as sky. With an sRGB image (average gamma of 2.2) 8 bits per pixel is usually sufficient of you don't do extensive editing. With ProPhotoRGB or when extensive editing is contemplated, 16 bpc is a good choice.

The choice of conversion software is a personal choice, I have around a dozen applications that will tackle AVI's, however VisualHub is not one of them, not because there is anything wrong with it but rather I have enough such applications in my arsenal already.
I would use mpegstreamclip in most scenarios for what you are wanting to do but maybe not always. It is a good idea to have a few applications to choose from as not all do the same thing. mpegstreamclip has a few more options than some bog standard applications without becoming overburdening with choices.
You might want to try a few applications yourself before deciding on the software for you. isquint is a free limited version of visualhub, you might want to give that a whirl to get a feeling for visualhub.
Be aware though that quality conversions do not happen quickly, claims of being faster than other applications may well be correct, but are usually a trade off against quality. Again you need to choose your software to reflect your preferred balance between speed and quality.

Video Bit Rate Too High-how to reduce quality

I have a Creative Zen Vision M Version .40.02. The problem is a few of my videos have a high bit rate, which from what I have read is the problem. These videos are from the free digital copy that comes with the movie. I would like to know how I can either change this, if there is a firmware that would let a higher bit rate play(from what I have looked into it doesn't appear so), or if I can't play them on my player. Thanks for any help.

I don't know exactly what the total length of the video is in minutes, but I do know that it is 6.8GB for a dual layer. Probably at least 3 hours. I don't know what the target bit rate is? Is what you are referring is to what the compression I used in compressor?
I am using the setting DVD Best Quality 150 minutes 3.7mbps for video and the AC3 for the audio.
I am recompressing all the videos again just in case there was a problem with one of the compressions. I don't understand why it isn't working this time when none of the settings or compression had changed.
