Boot "Lion" of a usb then use it as i would use "Snow leopard"

Hey there, this may sound horribly stupid and amature, so sorry in advance
Im running "Snow leopard" right now and i love it, i dont want to upgrade ( it just works for me )
BUT!
i need to use certain software thats only available to "Lion"
So, is it possible to Boot "Lion" of a usb then use it as i would use "Snow leopard"  in the sense of like, installing software, music and all the stuff like that
when the usb is in ?
Then when i turn off the laptop pull out the usb, and boot normally im right back into my familiar home "Snow Leopard" and nothings Changed ??
Cheers in advance, any help/ suggestions are appriciated !

Welcome to Apple Support Communities
If what you want to do is to install OS X Lion (or Mountain Lion) onto a USB drive and install apps there, you can use it. You just need a USB drive with the space for OS X Lion and your apps. Note that OS X takes about 10 GB, so add the size of your applications.
First, you have to format the USB drive by using a GUID partition map and "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)" as "Format" > http://pondini.org/OSX/DU1.html
Then, your USB drive is ready. Now, if you haven't purchased OS X Lion yet, call Apple to purchase it > http://support.apple.com/kb/HE57 They will give you a redeem code you have to insert in the Mac App Store.
When the download finishes, the OS X Lion installer will show up, so follow its steps. In the window where it asks you for the partition to install OS X Lion, choose your USB drive and the installation will start.
By default, your Mac will always start up from the USB drive. As you are going to unplug it, after installing Lion, open System Preferences > Startup Disk, and choose the Snow Leopard disk. Then, when you want to start up from OS X Lion, hold the Option (Alt) key while your Mac is starting, and select your USB drive

    Thanks Dirk,
Tried your suggestion various ways but it had no effect the download button was still greyed out and the install button would not activate will keep trying to find a solution. I dont want to boot from the external hard drive that has Lion on mainly because it is a usb HD and the connection to my wireless modem slows the connection rate and downloading would take about ten hours

    Hi b,
    Have you restarted yet?

  • Had upgraded to lion. Many software wouldn't work and downgraded back to snow leopard.  Now it comes up c user name and password. I haven't used my password since I bought the computer years ago. I put it in but won't work. More than 8 letters, does thaMA

I upgraded to lion and many software didn't work. Downgraded back to snow leopard and now my initial login page
Is asking for my password. I put it in, but it's not working. Possible I have forgotten the correct one considering in think the last time I logged
In was when I bought the computer. But I think it's right. I did read something about if ur password was 8 characters or more it won't work? Anyone know? Or know how I can reset my password?

Hello, is there any way of having a reboot disk for lion that I'm downloading, like the one I have with snow leopard ?

Once the Lion download is complete quit the installer and follow these directions. The file you need to make a boot disk disappears after you install Lion.

However, the Lion installation includes a recovery partition. It won't be of help if your entire HD dies but is very handy otherwise. This Knowledge Base article has a lot of good information about Lion's recovery partition.

I have a July 2011 mini with Lion 10.8 (MC815LL/A).  Can I back install to Snow Leopard?

No. That model originally came with Lion, not Snow Leopard. You cannot boot Snow Leopard on that model. Lion is 10.7, not 10.8. The latter is Mountain Lion.

After upgrading from Snow Leopard to Lion I cannot access a PGP drive which was generated under snow leopard. PGP does not start. When I try to start I just receive a message that Lion cannot work with PGP. How can I now access important and confifential informatio which I have stored in PGP (snow leopard). Do I have to move back to snow leopard. If so, how can I do this?

    If you have this product,

you have to go back to Snow Leopard.

  • I am selling my Mac Mini. I recently purchased OS X Lion. When I restore to factory settings, how can I ensure that the operating system will still be Lion, and not the original operating system, which I believe was Snow Leopard?

If you bought Lion from the App Store, you can't legally or practically transfer it, because it's tied to your Apple ID. Reinstall the original software from the discs that came with the machine.

You do not need Snow Leopord (10.6.X), but you do need Leopord (10.5.8) and iTunes 10.x for iOS 4.3. You need iTunes 10.5 for iOS 5
For the Current  (iOS 5 iPod touch specs)
Syncing with iTunes on a Mac or PC requires:
Mac: OS X v10.5.8 or later
PC: Windows 7; Windows Vista; or Windows XP Home or Professional with Service Pack 3 or later
iTunes 10.5 or later (free download from www.itunes.com/download)7

Word Processing documents can be opened directly in Pages 4 (AppleWorks 6 only) but this is no longer available from Apple - the new Pages 5 (Mavericks required) does not open AppleWorks documents. (The older version is contained in the iWork '09 box set which may still be available from Amazon and other independent retailers.) Panergy Software's docXConverter v3.2 ($19.95) can convert Appleworks 5 and 6 Word Processing documents to RTF (though it has been reported that it can only handle documents which contain only text, not those which include images or frames). The latest version of the free LibreOffice has announced that it can open AppleWorks 6 Word Processing documents and an ability to open ClarisWorks documents has been reported: it does appear to be able to handle at least some embedded images.
Draw Documents can be opened directly only in EazyDraw (the more expensive version from their website, not the cheaper one from the Mac App Store, and you will need v4.0 'Retro' not the most recent version) or Intaglio (though this appears not to be able to handle very complex drawings). LibreOffice will open simple Draw documents but I found it very unreliable with complex ones.
Spreadsheets can be opened directly only in the older versions of  Numbers - the new version for Mavericks will not do this. The old version is no longer available from Apple. (Again, the older version is contained in the iWork '09 box set which may still be available from Amazon and other independent retailers.)
Presentations can be opened directly only in the older versions Keynote; again, the new version for Mavericks will not do this. The old version is no longer available from Apple. (The older version is contained in the iWork '09 box set which may still be available from Amazon and other independent retailers.)
Nothing will open Database documents. You would need to export the data as ASCII and import it into another database program; you will lose your formatting and calculations will come over as the result, not the calculation.

According to Roaring Apps, there is a version of Protools compatible with Lion.  But you may need Snow Leopard 10.6.8 to buy either Lion or ML on MAS.   It looks like you need to get up-to-date with your OS and the apps too.

  • I am using Leopard but need  Mountain Lion for the Mac App Store.  How do I get Snow Leopard to be able to upgrade to Mountain Lion?

I am currently using Leopard but need Snow Leopard to be able to get Mountain Lion. I can see this is no longer available from Apple.  How would I get it so I could then get Mountain Lion. I want the Logic 9 Mac App Store App as I don't want to have to buy the whole Logc 9 from Studio 8.
Some help would be much appreciated.
    Thanks
    Adam

    Upgrading to Mountain Lion
You can upgrade to Mountain Lion from Lion or directly from Snow Leopard. Mountain Lion can be downloaded from the Mac App Store for $19.99. To access the App Store you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.6 or later installed.
If you need to purchase Snow Leopard contact Customer Service: Contacting Apple for support and service. The price is $29.00 plus tax. You will receive physical media - DVD - by mail.
Third-party sources for Snow Leopard are:
    Snow Leopard from Amazon.com
    Snow Leopard from eBay
After you install Snow Leopard you will have to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store.
If you need to purchase Lion contact Customer Service: Contacting Apple for support and service. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax.  It's a download.
Be sure your computer meets the minimum requirements:
Apple - OS X Mountain Lion - Read the technical specifications.
Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Mountain Lion
    iMac (Mid 2007 or newer)
MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer)
MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer)
MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer)
Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer)
Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer)
    Xserve (Early 2009)
    Are my applications compatible?
See App Compatibility Table - RoaringApps - App compatibility and feature support for OS X & iOS.

  • Can I restore my system after replacing my hard drive with the original leopard discs, then use my time machine backup (with Snow Leopard) to finish the restore?

I am replacing my original 100gb hard drive for a 500gb.  I am currently running OS X.6.7.  I understand the process of how to install the new drive and restore the system from the disc.  What I am unsure of is whether I need the Snow Leopard disc or can I use the original Leopard discs and then plug in my time machine backup to complete the restore?

How do I restore my entire system?.
or, use Carbon Copy Cloner to clone your current system to an external HD, replace the HD, then clone the clone back to the new drive.
