Boot/Startup extremely slow after Leopard installation

I installed Leopard last night and have it set up with Time Machine, etc.
I have two fairly major problems with it thus far:
(1) It takes F O R E V E R to boot. I'm talking a factor of 10 times or more longer than it was booting in Tiger. I see the grey screen with the apple logo and spinning circle for a very long stretch. Once it's up, it seems to run at fairly normal speed. But the slow boot is a real nuisance. I removed a couple of startup programs just in case they were the problem, but that doesn't seem to have been the issue.
(2) If my screensaver is on for any length of time, I can't make it go away without forcing a shutdown via the power button. Moving the mouse, hitting the keyboard, etc. just doesn't do anything.
Please help!
(If it matters, I did an upgrade install. If I need to do an erase and install to fix, can I easily get my files, etc. off of Time Machine now that it has run? If so, how?)

I'm finding syslogd the culprit.
using Terminal (type: top -o cpu -R -F -s 2 -n10) I get:
ID COMMAND %CPU TIME #TH #PRTS #MREGS RPRVT RSHRD RSIZE VSIZE
*12 syslogd 94.2% 0:48.11 4 37 0 0 0 5064K 595M*

21 mds 0.0% 0:00.75 16 210 0 0 0 5880K 685M
syslogd comes and goes. It can last for 5 minutes sometimes and other times max out my PPC mac for 5 seconds.
It completely hangs my machine in ways like choppy finder etc.
I have no custom software installed, it's basically a vanilla install on a PPC 1.5GHz Al. PB
Can others confirm this?

  • GarageBand extremely slow after Leopard

Hello. So I installed Leopard not too long ago. When I ran GarageBand, it ran verry slowly and was so slow it was literally impossible to work with. I reinstalled it and it worked perfectly fine for a few days. Now it's becoming extremely slow again.
    What should I do?

Well. It wasn't exactly as the website you have given me goes, but I found the problem the same way. I currently have Bose External USB Speakers. And the instant I changed the output to my iMac's built-in output, GB worked okay again. Apparently, it has to do with the Bose Speakers that are plugged into my computer.
I am going to try changing ports and all that stuff.
I'll post a response on my results.
    Thanks for your response.

  • New-ish Macbook booting/running extremely slow after 10.6.3?

    Hi all,
I bought a refurbished Macbook in March 2010. A few days ago I installed the big updates along with 10.6.3 and everything was fine. I was then trying to play an .avi with VLC media player with some other programs open (Firefox, iTunes I think). VLC started not responding along with the other programs and I got the spinning wheel for a little while. Eventually I forced quit everything and restarted. Upon this restart (and, incidentally, this would have been the first restart after the initial install/restart of the above updates) my Macbook was running really slowly. Extremely long boot up times (like 10-15 minutes), constant spinning wheel in OS X (takes about 1-2 minutes to load the system drop-down menu, longer for apps like disk utility). Everything runs fine, just massive load times and spinning wheels when doing anything.
I hadn't installed any new programs, widgets or any other stuff aside from the update last week.
The laptop's memory usage seems pretty normal (about 1.2/2.0gb free RAM, no page-outs) and nothing seems to be bogging down the CPU. All my processes are Intel. I have about 40gb free on my 120gb hard drive. Checked my Font Book and I have no duplicates.
I tried resetting PRAM (no change) and I verified/repaired the disk with DU (no trouble found).
I ran the Apple Hardware Test and everything came up without problems.
I ran repair permissions from the OS X CD and it repaired a whole bunch of Airport stuff and I got a ton of "Open Error 1" for keyedobjects, etc but the latter is normal?
What should I do next to resolve this? Is it an Airport issue given the repaired permissions? I'm guessing it's likely software/update related, since all my hardware SEEMS fine... Any help would be very much appreciated. Please let me know if you need more info.

    Hi again.
So after my above fiasco I decided to completely reformat (zero-out-data) my drive and do a clean install. After doing this, I began reinstalling all my previous software, and everything was back to normal, very fast, smooth, etc.
Today I decided I'd grab all my music and other files over from my PC's external hard drive to put it on my Macbook. I copied all my separate, misc. files like photos and .psd files and text documents first (about 5gb), and then copied my music folder next (70gb or so). After copying exactly 48gb, the computer froze and I got a spinning wheel. I couldn't click the X to stop the transfer and I let it sit for a good 30 minutes spinning away before trying force quit, and Ctrl - Option - Command - Eject to restart. Nothing worked. Eventually I just gave up and held down the power button.
Macbook restarted fine but then trying to resume the transfer of the rest of my music files kept giving me errors. The first time it copied an album or two and then hung up, this time allowing me to hit the X on the transfer. I tried one more time but it hung up after the first file, and more spinning wheel. Again, the computer was completely unresponsive with the spinning wheel, so I was forced to power button.
Now I get a similar experience to the first time (OP comments), but the start up is much faster. Still spinning wheels, but not as frequent. More importantly, I can't move any data currently on my macbook back off of it, using FAT32 USB sticks or anything. I tried once but I got another transfer hang-up so I don't want to try again. I can hear the hard drive "slip" or whatever, when I try, and then it just churns and spins around trying to find itself. I get similar sounds on start up, but eventually it seems to kick in and be fine.
(For the record, I had this same inability to write data from my macbook the first time this happened.)
Is this just because I had to force shut down the computer? Again, the computer was running fine until the freeze-up + force shut down.
Is it possible that the files I'm copying over were the cause? I had copied the same files over from the same NTFS hard drive right when I got the computer back in March, and they were working fine on the Macbook up until the first issues started a few weeks ago.
It seems to me like a hard drive issue, but Repair and Verify still comes up clean.
    Thanks in advance!

Ahh, welcome to the wonderful world of wifi under Leopard. Maybe you weren't aware that tens of thousands of people have been having endless problems with wifi whilst using Leopard .... I just got back from holiday - full signal yet no internet. Connect using ethernet and there it is - working perfectly. The culprit? Apple's very own Airport extreme base station, the new one which I bought thinking my old one was on the blink - nope.
Meanwhile Apple have not said a word about this in the last 8-10 weeks of utter misery for countless people - not a sausage. Many people are counting on 10.5.2 fixing this. I say don't count on it. Remember to complain to Apple as it is their own software/hardware that is at fault here. Meanwhile, they introduce a ... wifi laptop.... ooh the irony.

my final cut is running extremely slow after having for 6 months.  I use external hard drives and save nothing on my computer.  it takes a long time to render now. do you think something is wrong with computer. took it to mac store but they fail to help me.  I have a 13 inch mac book pro 10.6.8 8gb 2.3 gfz intel core i5

What did Apple tell you about what they did (or did not) find here?
See if working on the main disk is any faster.
USB2 is glacial, as I/O interconnects go.  And USB2 disks have been known to fail, or sometimes to drop back to USB1 speeds, too.  FireWire 800 is substantially faster than USB2, but still not as fast as the internal drive connections can provide.
Put another way, start varying your configuration, and see which configuration changes (still) have the problem, and which don't.

  • IPhoto is extremely slow after upgrading to OSX Maveric

Has anyone noticed that iPhoto is extremely slow after upgrading to OSX Maverick

    I've noticed that it isn't.
There are 9 different versions of iPhoto and they run on 8 different versions of the Operating System. The tricks and tips for dealing with issues vary depending on the version of iPhoto and the version of the OS. So to get help you need to give as much information as you can. Include things like:
    - What version of iPhoto.
    - What version of the Operating System.
    - Details. As full a description of the problem as you can. For example, if you have a problem with exporting, then explain by describing how you are trying to export, and so on.
    - History: Is this going on long? Has anything been installed or deleted? - Are there error messages?
    - What steps have you tried already to solve the issue.
    - Anything unusual about your set up? Or how you use iPhoto?
Anything else you can think of that might help someone understand the problem you have.

Both my sister and I have experienced our phones to be extremely slow after updating them. The messages take a few seconds to open, same with the apps. Also while typing, nothing will show up then all of a sudden everything you had typed will show up. It just seems like everything on the phone is slow. I've done some research on it, and everyone said to restore it. The people at Apple said not to do that unless it's the last resort. Is anyone else experiencing this?

Why post the same question twice ?

    Hi,
My Blackberry Z10 became extremely slow after OS update to version 10.3.1.2243. For example it sends text message 10-15 seconds after send button has been hit.
Can not answer the phone when a caller is calling (answer slide interface is unrespnsovie), if I want to launch any application screen turns black and nothing happens, etc.
    Does anyone experience similar issues?
    Thank you.
    Michal.

Hi and Welcome to the Community!
A quick read of this site will answer your final question quite clearly. The "fix" depends on several factors, but given what you describe I recommend you immediately update, via AutoLoader, to the most recent version (.2582)...some of the prior versions contain some particularly challenging issues, which are reported to be fixed in this version.
Good luck and let us know!

  • Software Update Issue-After Leopard Installation

I installed Leopard yesterday and ran the first software update; everything worked OK; the first software updated included three updates: Remote Desktop Client update; iDVD update and Garageband update.
Today I tried to run another update and had this issue: while the Software Update is displaying a message saying "New software is available for your computer" there is nothing listed below and the install button is disabled! Then I went to the Software Update Preference and saw a message there saying Last Attempt Failed; error occurred while checking
Does anyone have the same issue while trying a new software update after Leopard installation?
I do understand there is another new update issued yesterday by Apple regarding login key
Grateful for any insight re this problem

Hi. I had the same problem after doing an erase and install of Leopard yesterday. When I go into Terminal (actually iTerm) and type "softwareupdate -l" (to list all updates), I see:
    XML parser error:
    Encountered unexpected EOF
    Old-style plist parser error:
Malformed data byte group at line 1; invalid hex
This appears to be a problem with com.apple.SoftwareUpdate.plist, the property list for Software Update, but I'm not sure. If I type "find ~/Library/ -name '*plist' -exec plutil {} \;" to check all the plists, however, the Software Update plist checks out as OK. Furthermore, deleting that property list and rebooting to force the OS to create a new plist does not fix the problem. Weird. Now, if I type "sudo softwareupdate -i -a" to install all updates (change "-a" to "-r" to only install recommended updates), it works fine. I still get that same error when I try to run Software Update normally afterwards, but if I go to the preferences, all of the updates are listed under Installed Updates. So, I can get the OS to update automatically, but only through the Terminal. This is very weird, and I hope someone can shed more light on this situation.

  • Itunes starts extremely slow after an update of windows 8.1.

Itunes starts extremely slow after an update of windows 8.1.
It takes up to 10 minutus.
If I see the appliction log in event viewer then I see the following errors on the Bonjour service.
    For instance:
Client application bug: DNSServiceResolve(a8:fa:d8:3a:1e:8f@fe80::aafa:d8ff:fe3a:1e8f._apple-mobdev2._t cp.local.) active for over two minutes. This places considerable burden on the network.
    followed by
SendWakeupPacket error: sent -1 bytes: 10065
    What can this be?
    Already thanks,
    John

I did all the step with save mode and that didn't gave the same result.
Then I created a new account and there itunes started up normally.
So I contued with the user section.
I removed the itunes directory from
    c:\Users\username\AppData\Local\Apple Computer\iTunes
This gave the same result in not starting up.
Then I removed the itunes directory from
    c:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\iTunes
The a popup appears that the Bonjour Service has been disabled.
I looked in services and saw that is was still running.
But I tried to restart this service and it took a long time to stop this service.
Even if I selected restart the Bonjour Service didn't start.
Manually starting was not a problem.
Clicking OK on the popup let itunes start quickly. And closing and starting it again was also quickly.
So Matt thanks for your answer.
If it happens again I have to see if it was the removing of the itunes directory from roaming or restarting the Bonjour Service.

  • PB running slow after Leopard

My 12" PB, 1.5 Ghz G4, 1.25 RAM is running much slower after Leopard install. The machine is sluggish in all operations. What are the steps to checking how my PB is running and what can I do to improve the speed? I have done software update to 10.5.1. Thank you in advance. D

This is the first thing to do. In fact a backup is a must for any computer owner. It is not a question of if, but when hardware will fail.
Get a Firewire hard drive at least as big as your existing internal, even two if you can afford it. http://www.macsales.com/ has them.
The reason you get two, is if the first one fails and you must erase and install. If that should happen, you'll only be left with one copy of your data again, which is again a perilous point to be in case firmware or something else should cause the drive to fail. See what happened with the http://www.macmaps.com/firewirebug2.html (*) that still is affecting people.
See my backup FAQ* for additional reasons. Once you are backed up only then can we examine reasons for slowing down.

My mbp (mid 2010) is running extremely slow after installing some mavericks updates on May 22nd. Earlier I thought this behavior is due to spotlight indexing but it finished after 3 days. The memory usage always shows PM - 4 GB, Memory Used 3.96 GB, VM - 4 GB, Swaped used 0 bytes, App Memory 1.82 GB, File Cache 1.44 GB, Wired Memory 480 MB.
    Thanks in adavnce for help.

Was it the combo updater that was installed or the OS X 10.9.3 update. There is a difference.
MORE INFO ON WHY RUNNING COMBO FIXES ISSUES
Apple updates available from the Software Update application are incremental updates. Delta updates are also incremental updates and are available from Apple Downloads (software updates are generally smaller than delta updates). The Combo updates contain all incremental updates and will update files that could have become corrupted.
Combo updaters will install on the same version as they're applying--no need to roll back or do a clean install. So if you think you've got a borked 10.8.4 install from a regular update, just run the 10.8.4 Combo Updater on that system.
"Delta" updaters can only take you from one version to the next. For example: 10.9.1 to 10.9.2. If somehow the 10.9.2 is missing something it should have, and that something isn't changed between 10.9.1 and 10.9.2 it will still be stale after the delta update.
