Bootcamp 3.1 & Windows 7 x64 - no external sound input, low speakers level

Hi all,
I just installed long awaited Bootcamp 3.1 update. I am rather disappointed.
The only thing that has changed is that the red light on the audio output is off. This thing actually bothered me the least.
External sound input line does not seem to work at all. No matter if mike or standard line device is connected. System recognizes that something is connected but there is no sound coming, level indicator does not rise.
Speakers level is still low. As far as I know all it takes to fix it is to alter some settings in the *.ini file. Someone did it and posted for other to download but why it is sho hard for Cirrus and Apple? What is the matter?
Is there any way to get sound output via Mini Port under Windows 7?
System does not even see such device.
Thanks,
Thomas

What about the iMac though? 2008 Model w/ Realtek to be specific. The audio is low and poor and I haven't even tried the audio out. I'm running Win7 x64 and everything works well aside from my audio and my external WD Studio FW800 drive disconnecting randomly with repeated directory changes. I can avoid that on my system... but the audio is a real disappointment. Makes me feel like I need an external FW sound card.

Yesterday I was having no issues, as all normal sounds were present (i.e. Windows start-up/shut-down, as well as able to hear mp3 music played on Media Player).  Then I accidently pressed the mute button and now I no longer hear sounds...advanced PC user ...tried everything. I can not hear any system sounds, nor manually force any sounds to be heard.  When I look at the volume mixer, I can see the green bar rising and falling (when playing music) so it seems like the sound is being generated but just not being relayed to the internal speakers and/or headphone jacks.  Likewise when I open the "Sound" window, my default device is the "Speakers and Headphones, IDT High Definition Audio CODEC", and it shows the same activity on the green verticle bars.  I do not use any external speakers. I need the latest audio drivers for my chipset (AMD) I tried the ones on the HP support web-site and they didn't work. I uninstalled the old drivers and reinstalled  using Device Manager and Software Maintenance ...nothing is helping.
The audio troubleshooter did not identify any issues.  All drivers/etc appear to be running properly with no problems noted.  I have not installed any new programs in the recent past (but I honestly don't know if some update occured without my knowledge).
Something similar to this happened to me a couple months ago.  Sound randomly disappeared that time too, but came back just as randomly several days later.  Now that it has happened again, I would like to not only fix it but determine the cause so it doesn't re-appear again and again in the future.
Any advise or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.  And if there is any further information I should provide to give a better view of the situation, just let me know and I'll do my best.  Thanks!

    Hi,
First of all, you can certainly try the procedure but skip the step of reinstalling the AMD package - after uninstalling the current IDT driver from its entry in Device Manager, just go straight to:
Shut down the notebook, unplug the AC Adapter and then remove the battery.  Hold  down the Power button for 30 seconds.  Re-insert the battery and plug in the AC Adapter.
Then the next procedure - this in no way updates the bios, just resets the default values.  As the bios provides the interface between your notebooks hardware and the operating system, resetting the default values can correct issues that may be present here.
Tap away at the esc key as you start the notebook to launch the Start-up Menu and then select f10 to enter the bios menu.  Press f5 to load the defaults ( this is sometimes f9, but the menu at the bottom will show the correct key ), use the arrow keys to select 'Yes' and hit enter.  Press f10 to save the setting and again use the arrow keys to select 'Yes' and hit enter.
Let Windows fully load - it will automatically load an audio driver, but just let this complete.  Then open your Downloads folder, right click on the IDT installer and select 'Run as Administrator' to start the installation.  When this has completed, right click the speaker icon in the Taskbar and select Playback Devices.  Left click 'Speakers and Headphones' once to highlight it and then click the Set Default button.

  • How to play sound input thru speakers

Is there any way to play the audio stream coming in on the Line In port to the computer's speakers? It seems intuitively obvious that it should be possible and easy, but I can't find anything which enables it. I have the output volume at a reasonable level, and the "mute" controls in the Sounds control panel are not set. Still nothing!
    Thanks.

I agree that it should be simple, but it is not. In Mac OS X, there is no setting to play-through the audio input to the audio output. You have to run some program, such as an audio recording application, and set that program to play-through the sound.
Fortunately, if all you want is to play-through the sound, there is a simple little program that does just that one function. It's called LineIn.

Question: Do you see any kind of a signal, when you
hit the mic, while monitoring in your Mac's Sound
    preference INPUT pane?
If you are able to see a signal in your sound
preference input pane, let me know and I should be
    able to assist you.
If you are NOT getting a signal in your Mac's sound
preference INPUT pane, then you are having a HARDWARE
issue, most likely - which seems unlikely, given your
    post.
Just re-read your post. OK. If you are getting an audio signal, then you are likely running into the basic problem I ran into: If you are using a standard mic (audio or XLR), you will still need to have some kind of preamp or "boosting" solution.
You can either go with a SOFTWARE solution (which is what I started with).
Or you can go with a HARDWARE solution (like M-Audio's FastTrack).
In terms of SOFTWARE, you should start by creating a VOCAL [REAL INSTRUMENT] TRACK in GB.
Then you should add one or more boosting effects, like "EQ" in the instrument details pane. This is NOT ideal and will result in lots of background noise. You should make sure that the instruments MONITOR is set to "ON" or you will hear NOTHING, even if everything else is set and working perfectly. You should also ensure that the instrument's volume slider is ALL THE WAY UP, as I've noticed this setting can easily change between sessions.
Not sure what you do in and with GB; but, for me, I use both a software and hardware solution. I use a software preset in GB, when I am doing raw or practice or developmental vocals. Then, when I am ready, I use my FastTrack hardware device for final vocals. The ONLY reason I don't use FastTrack all the time is because I notice that it has a tendency to develop a DELAY after a while. So, I only use it, when I am ready to do serious vocals.
I recommend you get some kind of preamp designed to work with GB and your Mac (like FastTrack). I understand that there is model that is less than $50; although my FastTrack cost me close to $100 in my local Apple Store.

  • Sound input issues

I have a usb headset that I use for gaming. The microphone on the unit stopped working, but the earphones work great, so I went out and bought a simple Planatronics microphone and plugged it into my audio line in. But nothing is happening when I try to use it. I made sure that my Output was set for my logitech usb headset, but my input was set for line in - but still no dice. I have tried other simple microphones and they have not worked either.
The built in microphone can work in a pinch, but I have been told that I sound like im in a cave when I use it, and i want to keep my voice low as their are others in the house.
What is my next step? I would hate to have to buy a new usb headset when all i need is a good mike.

    This is what Apple say:
    Audio line in port
Analog audio line input minijack; up to 16-bit stereo and 44.1 kHz sampling rate.
The external sound input jack is a 3.5 mm mini phone jack. The sound input jack accepts line-level stereo signals. It also accepts a stereo miniplug-to-RCA cable adapter for connecting stereo equipment to the computer.

I am in deep trouble finding those x64 drivers.
For the Bluetooth stack, it complains about being unable to find the Bluetooth device. It keeps on saying "Please plug in the Bluetooth device.". Nothing more...
For the sound card, Analog Devices does not provide drivers to individuals. Instead, they forward you to the OEM manufacturer web site, in our case the Toshiba downloads site, where you can find nothing.
I understand that Toshiba is not delivering those machines with 64 bit operating systems.

  • Tiger on MacBook Drive and Leopard w/BootCamp and Windows XP on External?

I currently have the latest version of Tiger installed on my MacBook's internal HDD (10.4.11) and I have an External USB HDD that has Leopard (I can't remember if it is the latest or not) installed on it.
I currently am using VMware Fusion in Tiger with a copy of Windows XP Pro, and I want to use BootCamp in Leopard to install Windows XP Pro so I can run it without it being inside a virtual machine. I already have a separate partition (currently FAT32) on the external reserved for the copy of Windows, and I thought that when I went to install using BootCamp, that it would then reformat to NTFS for me.
I think it still would do this, but I do not know for sure as BootCamp will not let me install Windows. It comes up with an error saying something like the BootCamp Assistant won't allow it to run off of an external HDD. Would this be that I have to have Leopard installed on one partition (at least) of my MacBook's internal HDD so that it can install Windows (on either the internal OR external HHD - in it's own partition)?
Is there any easy way to partition my MacBook's internal HDD without having to re-install Tiger during the partitioning (and maybe reformatting?) if I have enough space available on my HDD? I am still fairly new to Macs and I have yet had to do anything with reformatting/repartitioning and re-installing the OS, I have upgraded the OS (on my old G3 iBook), and I had done the separate Leopard install on the External HDD (as I didn't want to ger rid of Tiger and still use Tiger as my main OS, haven't been totally ready for the big switch).
I have cleared off lots of space on my HDD the past week, so I have about 47GB available on my 80GB drive. My external is a 100GB currently in 3 partitions - I think, Leopard installed with 37GB left available, 30GB for my Windows -blank, and I think I have a 10-15GB blank misc storage partition.
I have copies of all my documents and files from my MacBook on my network NAS, and I have copies of all applications installed on my NAS as well (the install files that is). So if needed I could reformat and partition and install various OS's where needed, but I would like to try and NOT have to do this just because my MacBook is now used as my main system (my windows desktop is not even hooked up and my windows laptop has been cleared so that I can try to sell it).
So I would like to at least keep my basic web browsers and other daily apps with info installed for use while trying to get stuff set up to use BootCamp to install Windows XP, but I can totally restart from a blank slate if needed.
I just need some help on exactly what I should do (where to find the "options" I need to change through Disk Utility, and what might be the easiest way (or order) to do these things in.
Any other comments or suggestions would be gladly appreciated, I look forward to getting my MacBook (along with an External USB HDD for added space) set up to run a full copy of Windows and finally let me get away from that dreaded OS (on a Windows specific PC). I stopped liking it back when my dad switched to Win 95 from Windows 3.1, and had much prefered DOS over Windows as well.
I just need to have access to it now and then for little things, and to play some of the (slightly older) games that I have that I do wish to play, but not on a system that makes me waste more time trying to fix/upgrade it/tweak it as I get to actually do ANYTHING on it.
So thanks in advance for any help and suggestions...

    Hi,
sadly BootCamp does indeed not support the installation of Windows on external harddisks.
Mostly because Windows itself (courtesy of Microsoft) does not support this either.
There is one how-to, that claims to let you install Windows on an external harddisk, see here: http://tubeshards.wordpress.com/2006/12/05/install-windows-to-a-macintosh-usb-dr ive/
But as you can see, it is quite a hassle and not for the faint-hearted
If you don't want to go that way, your only choice is to install Leopard on your internal HD and use the external for Tiger.
Since you have a 'Windows' partition on your external HD, that is big enough, you can use it to clone your internal Tiger partition to that using SuperDuper or Carbon Copy Cloner and after verifying that the new Tiger partition is bootable, clone your Leopard from the external to the internal HD.
After both your OSXs are set and checked, you can then run the BootCamp Assistant from Leopard to install Windows on your internal HD.
And at last you can cleaar-up your external HD of everything you don't want/need anymore.
    Regards
    Stefan

  • Bootcamp Windows 7 from External Drive Hangs

    Hi All,
I recently removed my Macbook Pro's internal optical drive and replaced it with a 128GB SSD. I am running OSX 10.8.3 off of the SSD but can not get bootcamp to install Windows 7. I walk through the first steps with bootcamp assistant and partition spase for Windows. All is well untill I have to restart the machine and boot into the external optical drive. I select the Windows CD from the boot menu but the MBP hangs on a grey screen with the Apple logo and the drive spins down.
Any suggestions on how to get the MBP to boot from the external optical drive?

Apple admits in one tech note to poor FW800 speeds on Mac Pro.
Hard to get rid of GPT but if you format the drive to MBR in Disk Utility and FAT you can then convert or reformat to NTFS.
No mention of the make of the case.
FW400 is pretty good. But why not use eSATA PCIe and SATA. Native if possible (no FW/USB type cases, or Oxford with multi interfaces). Works for me, using FW400 or Sonnet Tempo E2P or E4P (but not both together in Windows).
The hot fix wasn't that for XP or something?
Motherboards like Gigabyte are coming out with a dual-use port for SATA and USB3. FW seems like proprietary, not really adopted or supported outside Apple.
And I'd say there are problems with NTFS drivers for OS X so that is an issue.
Also, as nice as it may seem, Boot Camp's AppleHFS.sys and HFS+ support for read-only in Windows causes other problems and side effects, like Windows 7's Backup facility to not work.
When I get a drive, I use Windows and the vendor's (WD etc) hard drive diagnostic to do a full test, zero, etc and almost invariably drives formatted in Mac OS had trouble and worked better after such tests and formatting.

I have speakers plugged into the back line out.
They work in Mac 10.6.4 (as always) and in Parallels 5 Windows 7 using Bootcamp partition.
All other jacks work. In Realtek driver it shows nothing connected to that jack.
    Anybody else have this issue?
    Anybody else have solved this?

    Anyone at all?
Even if you don't have the issue yet have a similar setup. Maybe I can figure out if there's a driver update I may need.
BTW I KNOW others have this as I've seen this mentioned on other forums. What I do NOT know is whether it's "everyone" or there's something about systems that don't have this issue, I need to follow.

Install the required Windows drivers: Boot Camp Support Software 5.0.5033. Download this link preferably from Windows. Otherwise, download onto a FAT formatted USB disk from which you can copy to your Windows system.

  • Sound very scratchy on imac (early 2008) running Windows 7 using bootcamp. Everything works perfect expect that sound issue.

I used to have Windows Vista, and the sound was perfect. I erased the partition with bootcamp and re-did it to install Win 7. I updated everythign after using the mac installation updates stuff first. Everythign works just fine, except the sound is very scratchy. I have found no way to fix this.

ALSO, I plugged in a logitech headset that I use all the time, and it says it connects, but no sound coming from it and the mic doesnt seem to work at all either. Normally when I plug it in, the iMac's sound turns off and the sound comes out of the headset, but now I plug it in and nothing changes.

Have you actually tired it yourself?  I'm wondering if this is a workaround, or will this be the official solution.  I wouldn't mind trying it, but I don't want to mess it up for when the Official driver is released.

Hey, I have this issue with my sound blaster li've. I've just recently installed Windows x64 and now I'm having issues with my sound. It creates this weird echo sound with a small static sound everytime a game. Prior to loading any applications, the sound is just fine. I had this issue when I had Windows XP but I installed the Li've applications and was able stop that. But I can't install that application for Windows x64. Is there any solution to this? Thanks in advance.

  • Install BootCamp windows 8 on external Boot Disk

I have no internal hard disk, for other reasons. I need to install Windows 8 on an external hard disk, which is partitioned, and I boot from one partition (and the drive is GUID). My windows 8 is in the form of an iso, and I cannot burn it to a disk, although I could burn it to a USB drive. If you need any other info, I can provide it.
    Thanks in advance,
    Oscar Simpson

You cannot install Windows on an external drive. Microsoft only allows you to install it on an internal drive.
There's a Windows 8 feature called Windows To Go, that allows you to put your Windows system onto an external drive, but to do this, you need Windows 8 installed on the internal drive
