Booting error after post-install update [Solved]

Been using Linux for a while, but wanting to learn rather than just use, so decided to give Arch a go, after the review in LinuxMagazine.
Managed to install and boot into it after a few trial and error.
Ran "pacman -Syu"
pacman updated itself, then ran into the hotplug conflict. I took it from This thread that it was safe to accept to remove hotplug.
Ran "pacman -Syu" again
I then ran into the the error:
error: the following file conflicts were found
grub: /usr/share/grub: exists in filesystem.
Followed This thread and did
phrakture wrote:'mv' /usr/share/grub to something like /usr/share/grub-backup
Ran pacman -Syu again, this time, it ran properly (I think)
Rebooted the computer, ran into a kernel panic:
UFS: unable to mount root on unknown-block(0,0)
. Followed This thread and the wiki and edited the instruction on Grub's boot screen to set
root=/dev/hda1 ro
and added
initrd /initrd26.img
to the line uderneath.
this allows me to boot (sort off), but I then get the following error:
/bin/sh: can't access tty; job control turned off
From there, I get what seems to be a limited shell (get the "#" sign but not the location I am in such as "root@archbox:#" which I would expect). Here, I am snookered. If I search the wiki for this message, I get one article which refers to Cups and is not relevant to the issue, as far as I can tell, and I do not get any joy from the forum either.
Reinstalling the system is not a problem, but I would rather understand what is happening before I do it, so that I can fix it if the issue reappears, and because it fits into the "learning" purpose of installing this distro.
Could someone guide me on my next step?

Thanks, that did it. Thought I had tired that as well, though, must have been tired and made some typos.....
On a sidenote, it seems that after the install, there was "/dev/discs/disc0" then came the partitions: part1; part2; part3, which is now translated as hda1; hda2; hda3. I thought partitions started with hda0.. Am I wrong or is the way Arch auto-prepares the hard drive just skips the 0 partition?

Pure-ftpd-mysql socket error after latest mysql update [SOLVED]

As we know the socket path in mysql have been moved from /tmp/mysqld.sock to /var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock.
The problem now with pure-ftpd-mysql is that it tries to use /tmp/mysqld.sock even though I have:
MYSQLSocket /var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock
Inside of my /etc/pure-ftpd/pure-ftpd-mysql.conf
I guess that either MYSQLSocket is the wrong keyword or that the path is hard coded into pure-ftpd-mysql.
Any ideas how to solve this?
EDIT:
The path for the mysql conf was changed during last update
from
MySQLConfigFile /etc/pure-ftpd/pure-ftpd-mysql.conf
to
MySQLConfigFile /etc/pure-ftpd/auth/mysql.conf

Thanks for the reply. The problem is that all my other applications are using the new correct path. But I guess I can just make a symlink like you said for now until pure-ftpd-mysql is fixed.

To check the local network for some of the common configuration problems, launch Terminal.app and issue the following diagnostic command:
sudo changeip -checkhostname
That'll report some local configuration information and then either no errors detected and no changes required, or it'll point to whatever configuration errors or issues it might detect. That doesn't catch everything, but it catches the common errors.
FWIW, 192.168.0.0/24 and 192.168.1.0/24 are poor choices for the local network, as VPNs are based on IP routing and IP routing gets tangled when the same subnet is used on both ends of the VPN. 192.168.0.0/24 and 192.168.1.0/24 are near ubiquitous in home networks and coffee shops.

Macbook will not boot up after running Software Update

My MacBook will not boot up after running Software Update (Security update + Java?) earlier today. I have only the gray start up screen + Apple logo + gear wheel constantly rotating. I have tried restarts several times and tried to start up from my original system DVD - this makes no difference.
I called Apple support, tried resetting the power and PRAM - still no difference. He had no knowledge of other problems reported; although I note recent post may have same issue.
I cannot get an appointment at my Apple Store before Monday.
Any suggestions?

Still no success. When I hold down the option key when powering up I get the hard disk icon plus arrowhead (only). When clicking the arrowhead it goes to the gray screen + apple logo+ rotating gearwheel.
This happens both with DVD in slot and without DVD. the DVD image is not coming up on screen. When I start up without DVD the hard disk icon appears promptly. When I start with DVD in the DVD is spinning for a short period before the hard disk icon appears. On clicking the arrowhead to hard disk icon the DVD spins again for a while then stops. Apart from the DVD spinning, both situations result in gray screen + apple logo+ rotating gearwheel.

When I'm composing emails a dialog box keeps popping up asking me to click "resend" to reload my email. If I don't I get timed out. This problem has only happened after I installed update 3.6.16

FYI I am referring to my ISP email on the providor's website, although I have not tried opening other email accounts on the updated Firefox.

IOS 6 Error - Unable to install update

I downloaded the IOS 6 update and clicked on Install Now. and click to Agree. It says verifying update and then I get the error "Unable to install update. An error occured installing IOS 6." I get a choice of Close or Settings. Both take me back to IOS 6 update screen. It does say it's downloaded.
I've tried turning the new iPad off and then back on. My current OS is 5.1.1 ((B206)

Not sure if this will help on iPads, but I was getting error message when I tried to "Install Update" on my iPhone 4s. Every time I would hit the Install button and agree to the terms I would get the pop up message that the "Software update not available at this time. Try again later." What I did was turn off wifi and went back to install and it worked! Well, it is currently off with black screen and apple logo with upgrade bar so we'll see. Hopefully no futher issues arise. Good luck everybody!

I cannot update my iTunes with"error occurred while installing updates"

Ever since I updated my Windows Vista Laptop to Service Pack 2, iTunes has not been able to update with the a popup with "error occurred while installing updates. If the problems persist choose Tools > Download Only". And i DID have to Reinstall iTunes from scratch, so please help me. I really want to get rid of this problem thats been bothering me for 2 years

I've got it to work. If that's the same error you received, then I have to assume you're using Windows 64-bit (as all the people I found with the same problem do). This was what worked for me, courtesy of Shiggity from sevenforums.com -
Go to "C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu", right-click "Programs" and select "Properties".
On the Security Tab, Click "Advanced".
Go to the Owner tab, and Click "Edit".
Change the owner to yourself, Check "Replace owner on subcontainers and objects", and Click OK.
And then re-run the installation. Hope that works!

I also have been experiencing some problems after running Software Update (Security update + Java) a couple of days ago. Similarly to Jandaf (http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=9000023) I have only the gray start up screen + Apple logo + gear wheel constantly rotating. Based on the information provided in this forum I have tried some procedures which didn't solved my problem so far. Below I describe I have tried:
1) I have booted using the installation DVD and run the disk utility. When performing the First Aid/Verify Disk I found some errors ('Invalid node structure'). But I couldn't fix the problem using disk repair (same problem 'Invalid node structure' 'Volume check failed'.
2) I also tried to boot in single user mode (command + s) to run fsck -fy. It didn't work. I got the following message (last 4 lines):
CSRHIDTTransitionDriver::probe: -s
CSRHIDTTransitionDriver::probe: booting in single user .. do not match
Extension "com.apple.driver.AppleUSBTCKeyboard" has no kernel dependency.
Extension "com.apple.driver.AppleUSBTCEventDriver" has no kernel dependency.
3) When trying to boot in safe mode. I got a grey screen with the following message:
'You need to restart your computer. Hold down the power button for several seconds or press the Restart button".
4) I also tried to 'Archieve & Instal'. Again no success. After reading the DVD the action is terminated because some errors (does not specify).
5) I also tried the 'German Medicine' (http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=8728797#8728797) (i.e. Connect the 'problematic MacBook' to my old G4 via firewire and reinstall the 2009-001 update). Again no success. The G4 cannot mount the MacBook hardrive.
I don't know what to do any more.
A) Can I resuscitate my old system? If yes how?
B) If not, can I at least save the data I have in my old HD?
C) Is it possible to format and reinstall the OS or is this this computer doomed?

Due to my lack of knowledge I can't judge how bad this is. But I can tell you that every time I read the word bad in the log it scares the s*** out me.

Photoshop CS2 Error after Leopard Software Update

After installing the software update to fix the Keychain and blah blah blah my PS CS2 will no longer allow me to do ANYTHING. I can open it up and run it, open a file I'm working on and if I try to do anything it gives me an error message saying: "Could not complete your request because of a program error"
Any help? I really dont want to reinstall as it's an upgrade version and I'd have to reinstall CS again.

First thing I would do is boot from the Leopard Install disk and use Disk Utility to Repair Disk and Repair Disk Permissions.
If that doesn't work you might try deleting the PS CS2 preferences.
Note: Adobe does not require you to re-install the previous version when installing upgrade software, you only have to enter the old serial number.

Download Error After CC 2014 Update

I installed updates from the CC desktop yesterday including installing the CC2014 of apps. Some apps did not install completely and were hung up after running overnight.
CC Desktoop > Apps shows the error message "Download Error" with no code. Tried deleting the Library > Application Support > Adobe > OOBE folder and restarting as recommended on a previous post. Still get the same result.
I am working on an iMac.
Any suggestions?
