Bought a lemon?

Basically I think I've bought a lemon. My G70t-200 notebook is not yet 2 years old, but so far:
2 months after purchase the keyboard stopped working.
3 months after purchase mousepad stopped working.
8 months after purchase speakers cut in and out.
10 months after purchase wireless internet receiver stopped working.
12 months after purchase, laptop would power off by itself.
16 months after purchase battery did not power up or hold a charge any longer.
18 months after purchase began to get "blue screen of death"
21 months after purchase notebook would no longer boot up as power jack would not recognize power supply.
Action I took:
2 trips back to HP repair center while it was under warranty.
Hours and hours spent online with customer support. Doing all they advised such as hard resets and downloading new drivers etc. All which would work for a limited time before initial problems returned.
1 new power cord purchased and additional repairs, cost at over $200.
It currently will not boot up as it does not recognize the power supply.
I've never dropped it,  spilt anything on it, or roughly handled it.
Short of just accepting that I bought a lemon and eating the $1000 I've spent on purchasing and repairing this laptop is there anything I can do?

I think it's only because you have so few authorized locations where you are. I bought mine at Best Buy in the states so I can take it into Best Buy OR any APple store I happen to be near.
Its kinda like having a 'free refill coffee cup' that you purchased from a Tim Hortons (a chain in Canada). Easy to get a refill in Canada, won't be honored anywhere else.

I keep getting the same message from the BB app store when I try to get a decent app - Not Available For This Device (Torch 9860).  The phone (so I thought) is one of the newer models so surely it supports mundane apps such as Paypal?  There are others I can't get and I must admit I find this baffling.

Yep, appears the PayPal app has not been ported over to OS7 device.

  • Qwerky MacBook Pro - LEMON?

I'm a first-time Mac user, and so I am still learning, but I have had difficulty with my Mac since I go tit. +*Has anyone experienced anything like this before (below)???*+
I purchased my MacBook Pro in August 2006 (Tiger, 10.4.11, 2 GHz Intel, 1GB Memory). Ever since then I have experienced what seem to be random, chronic issues with this Mac, even just within the first couple weeks of owning it. In the beginning, phone support was so-so and I usually attributed my issues to my lack of familiarity with the Mac system. Phone technicians usually would end up having me re-start my computer or change settings and sometimes this worked, but it seemed like the problems that I was observing were not normal....meaning, I shouldn't have to restart my Mac as often as I do, I +shouldn't have+ these regular problems with a new machine. Unfortunately I never kept a consistent log of all my issues and when they occurred or in what context, but here is a list of chronic problems I have experienced within the last 15 months since I got my Mac and an estimate of how frequently they have occurred. Also, they seem to occur during 'normal' activities when I am simply browsing the internet....trying to watch a DVD....typing up a document in MS Office....or leaving my computer alone (just some examples, nothing unusual):
    - Unable to view video on certain websites, such as CNN or YouTube (I would get a "?" or the Quicktime "Q" in place of where the video should play. First couple months, a Mac IT guy on campus couldn't figure it out and finally had me create an entirely new account and moved all files to this new account. No problem since)
    - Oftentimes will get the 'pinwheel' for unusually long amounts of time (First couple months this occurred whenever I tried to watch a DVD, this occurred when the DVD was inserted and the DVD program was initiated, or if the program did start OK, the pinwheel would appear if I 'interrupted' the viewing progress, like pausing the DVD or moving between chapters. Now this happens regularly, every couple of days, when initiating normal actions like closing a window, clicking on an icon on a webpage, force-quitting a program (which is another issue below))
    - I have to force-quit programs (altappleesc) because they will not respond. Occurred with iPhoto, Safari, MS Office (only a handful of times w/ each in the last several months). Several times when I have initiated a force-quit, the program to force-quit will be highlighted, I will hit 'Force Quit' and I get the perpetual pinwheel that never goes away, the program never quits, and I have to turn my computer off using the power on/off button.
    - My desktop picture randomly reverts to an old picture that it had been set to previously. Usually has happened when my Mac is 'idle' or the screen goes into 'sleep' (black) mode, but has also occurred when my Mac has been off, and I turn it on at the beginning of the day. Has probably happened a total of a dozen times (once, just yesterday).
    - My Mac shuts off randomly. No power surge, always plugged into the power cord (battery charging). The Mac just turns off, black screen, as if you had turned it off. Has happened two or three times total.
    - Optical drive oftentimes will not read CDs or DVDs - new Cds, burned CDs/DVDs, no scratches or smudges. I will insert DVD/CD and it sounds like the drive will initiate, it does this three times, and then spits the CD out. This happens regularly (daily), more often than not.
    - I receive an 'unexpected error occurred that could not be recovered from (-36)' when trying to watch a DVD (has occurred when I try to hit 'Play Movie' on the menu screen of a DVD, when trying to move between chapters, or in the middle of the movie - in all cases the disc surfaces were perfectly clean). Additionally, often times when trying to watch a DVD, the image has appeared staggered, slow and jumpy and not up-to-speed with the audio (which is unaffected).
    - System generally runs 'slow': words that I am typing (either in an email or in a document) lag several second behind my typing speed, minimized windows that appear next to the dock are slow to appear at full screen when I click on them (10-20 seconds lag)
    - System is slow to start up (1 to 2 minutes): when turning on the laptop, the white screen with the apple icon that appears before the user log-in screen appears for an unusually long amount of time. This has happens several times a month, most recently this morning. This screen appeared for literally 14 minutes and my log-in screen never appeared. I had to turn of the computer using the on/off power button.
    - I recently bought a WesternDigital external hard-drive (My Book Essential Edition, 250gb). In the last month or so, my Mac has stopped recognizing the drive. The external drive is still quickly recognized by other computers, but never appears on my Mac from any of my USB ports, and my Mac does not appear to be 'searching' for it either. Other devices (USB jump drives) still function with my Mac.
*+Am I crazy?+* I know independently each of these issues may not seem very unusual or significant, but these are chronic, and together are unacceptable for an $1800 machine. I have never heard of anyone having so many issues (many friends and departments at my university use Macs and are baffled by my problems). It is all-around just very qwerky and has been since the day I bought it, but has finally gotten to the point where I cannot imagine that these are all normal scenarios. Have I bought a LEMON?! It has never been dropped or experienced any extreme environments....
THANK YOU FOR YOUR HELP! Any feedback would be greatly appreciated...

The first thing I would recommend is taking your MBP into an Apple Store and talking with one of the geniuses. During my first few weeks of owning my program, I found that I had to download Windows Media Player & Adobe flash player in order to play videos on certain sites. I will occasionally get a pinwheel thing that lasts, not "perpetually", but for a few minutes. I got my MBP in August of this year and I'd say this has happened 8-10 times, using my computer for ~6-10 hours a day. My dock has disappeared a handful of times and I had to get a new display because of dead pixels just one month after I bought it. About a week ago, I inserted a clean once or twice viewed DVD and got the same message as you've had. However it has only occurred once, so I wasn't too concerned. The point I'm trying to make is that there are some software problems that I too think are not fitting for such an expensive machine. However it seems like you have a lot of problems, so definitely go see a Genius at an Apple Store. Hopefully you got the AppleCare Protection Plan, because if not I think a visit is about $100. If you can't get to a store or mail it in to Apple for inspection...
-You could try to purchase an external optical drive because it seems like something is not right with yours.
-The slowness of the computer may be caused by CPU or memory intensive programs (some which you may not realize are running). To see if this is a problem, download the iStat Pro widget and when your computer gets slow, open Dashboard and check CPU and memory usage. Also, make sure you "Quit" programs instead of just closing them (I'm not an expert so I don't know if this makes much difference, but it's worth a try). I don't have any idea why your computer would start slow.
-Also, I believe there was a recall of batteries on certain MBP models. Check to see if your machine was affected by this recall. If so, this may be connected with your random shutdowns.
Macs are known for their simplicity, power-performance ration, being ascetically-pleasing and all-around great machines. They are not, however, known for being the most reliable machines. Consumer Reports gives them an "average" reliability. Even so, even the most reliable brands produce a few lemons. Your computer may be a lemon. Anyways, I believe you should take your MBP to an Apple Store and talk with one of the Geniuses there. Good Luck with fixing your problems!

  • Two years later, a random, hopeless e9105z PC from Hewlett Packard with continual freezes.

I posted a message over a year ago with no luck, and wanted to see if a second posting would give any advice.
In short, my PC freezes randomly, with no predictability or triggering events.  The only thing that happens is the system locks up, the mouse pointer is frozen on the screen, and the system is essential unuseable.  All I can do is a hard power down.
Over the 100+ freezes I've had, here are some odd things that have happened:
    (1) Around 30% of the time, pressing F8 to run system diagnostics fixes the problem.  When I run system diagnostics, 90% of the time, the system comes back perfectly clean.
    (2) Of the times that systems diagnostics has been run, here are the errors that have been found:
--several times, it warned me that my Western Digital 640GB HDD was about to fail
--two times, it warned me that I had no boot path
--two times, it warned me that my Intel X-25M SSD was on the fritz
    (3) Sometimes I can turn back on and be okay, other times, I have gotten something to the extent of 'boot sector missing, press Ctrl-Alt-Del to reset'
    (4) system has been unplugged/replugged several times, motherboard dusted off, SATA connectors unplugged/replugged, etc.
    (5) the system sometimes will fully boot up in Safe Mode, other times it just freezes up during the initialization.  when it does hang in Safe Mode, it does not get hung up on the same file twice.
    (6) For Windows Update, the NVIDIA nForce Serial ATA Controller June 2009 driver update crashes my system.  I have to do a system restore.  This update is hidden/disabled in the Windows Update profile
Recently the freezes are happening once every 1-3 minutes every time I turn on.  They used to go once every 2 months, then maybe once every 2 weeks.  Tonight, oddly enough, my computer has worked for over an hour without problem.
HP's tech support has been useless.  It seems like they are more or less following a flow chart that has little applicability to this situation.  Telling me that my printer and Microsoft keyboard were the problems.  (Really?  Am I that stupid?)  They succeeded in gringing me down over the phone.  And besides, I'm out of warranty.
Is this most likely a bad motherboard, or an NVIDIA chipset bug, or a Windows 7 compatibility issue?  I have no idea where to start (or end) in this problem.
    My configuration:
    Win7 clean install
    6GB memory (Stock)
    Phenom II X4 945 (stock)
    Intel X-25M primary/boot
    Western Digital 640GB HDD (stock)
    Microsoft mouse
    Microsoft keyboard
A printer that is hooked up about 30% of the time (Lexmark X8350 POS)
    Any help is appreciated.
    Thanks,

I am having a similar issue with random freezes/hangs as many posts with my Pavilion Elite m9350f that I bought a year ago or so.  I have automatic update turned on and have gone to HP and MSFT sites to ensure all drivers/software are current.  I have also attempted to clear the fan and heat sinks of lint.
This has been a chronic issue since the PC was new that has good days and bad.  On good days I will not see a crash at all.  Bad days, the PC will randomly hang every 5 minutes or so EVEN when cold, while in BIOS setup, and operating in safe mode.  The software applications I use don’t seem to be relevant (they are limited to Office Pro 2010 and StarCraft II).  The typical “crash” is a hang that freezes the display and all user I/O.  USB ports will often power down (laser mouse light will often turn off as does PS2 keyboard).  I also don’t hear the buzz of the hard drive (it appears to spin down).  I do hear the fans even after a hang.  A power cycle is needed to reboot and bring the PC back online.
The ‘crashes” seem to corrupt data on the HD.  As a workaround to fixing this issue, I reinstalled/repaired Vista several times because as time from install increased, it seemed bad days became more prevalent.  Then, three months ago, because the PC crashed too hard to reload/repair vista, I installed Windows 7 and replaced the hard drive.  When I attempted to attach the faulty hard drive as a secondary drive, my PC would not boot (faulty drive was confirmed?).
Now with the new OS and HD, I am seeing the same problem again.  Like you I am running out of ideas.  I took the PC in for troubleshooting with the GeekSquad where they kept it for a week (three days longer than planned) to run several virus scans and hardware diagnosis programs.  All test passed.  The tech claimed to not duplicate a crash so I thought maybe it was my keyboard and mouse.  I bought new keyboard and mouse on the way out of the shop.  When I got home, the hangs continued…another bad day.  The event log recorded several crashes while the PC was in the shop…I hate being told lies.
My PC Event viewer logs close to 50,000 events most of which mean absolutely nothing to me.  I am unable to find events that appear prior to the 41 and 6008 recovery error notices that might signal a cause.  However, I am getting many instances of Event ID 12 with indicates “The platform firmware has corrupted memory across the previous system power transition.  Please check for updated firmware for your system.”  I assume this means to look for an update to motherboard BIOS?  I am working on finding the right BIOS now.  I don’t believe it likely a BIOS update will fix the hang issue.
Reading through the forums, I see this issue on many different PC models configured with many variants of software.  Like you I don’t have my PC working correctly yet.  Maybe we just need to accept that we bought a lemon and start replacing parts?  I’m thinking power supply and motherboard…

  • Youre charging Big Boy prices but you services are second rate...and worse

I've been on hold as usual for 15min+, soon to be 30 min, trying to get help with any issue.
Your website is slow, unreliable, disorganized and not helpful at all.
Your automated attendant is redundant and inefficient.
Supposed to have 35/35 internet.  Your speed test show an 8 Mbps uplodad speed!  Its regularly under 10Mbps.  What am I paying for?  Are you selling things that dont exist?  Thats fraud.
Try searching support...its the same 5 FAQs that are totally unrelated to any actual problems.  I dont need any more guides on how to use my remote.
Your digital adapter service has no chanel identification on your little display and your site has no channel guides!  and channels are in no logical order.   And I have 2 HD boxes...no I'm not to cheap to have a regular converter.  I dont need to see the verizon logo on the channel popup...I need to see the Chanel logo or abbreviation.  Takes 30 minutes to figure ou what challen Im on, and god forbid theres a commercial break.
Your support forums respond by telling the person to ask another customer?!!
Your VOD navigation is horrible:  if your service goes out, and resets you playback progress, there no way to skip ahead!?  limited to 2x fastforward?  I have to sit there for 30 minutes to get back to where I was!?
GET IT TOGETHER.  DO SOMETHING TO MAKE YOUR CUSTOMERS SATISFIED.  I FEEL LIKE I BOUGHT A LEMON FROM CON ARTISTS.

The lack of good customer service seems to be common among large companies that once had a monopoly.  Verizon still operates as though they are the only ones that can provide these services and thus can provide sub standard service and even less customer support.
I don’t think it is a concious effort to "screw the little guy". I think the problem is that the company is too large and no one there has a good grasp on what it takes to be a leading company in a competitive market so they keep trying to provide service and products in the same manner as it was done for years.
Here is a great example. I switched to Vonage in 2004 and never once got a phone call or letter from Verizon asking why I no longer have their phone service. Even if I had received such a communication, I am certain my response would have been tracked in a spreadsheet and filed away, never to be seen again. I recently got a flyer from them (2012) offering me unlimited LOCAL calling and three calling features for $5 more a month than I am currently paying. What? Why would I pay more for less?
Anyway, the only way that things will change is if you stop buying their services. Wireless, FIOS, Copper, etc. While I realize that the other options out there aren’t much better, there is not much else we can do.

  • Issues With Tablet Sensitivity

I just recently purchased my touchscreen notebook and installed a digital art program (Krita) with no problem. I plugged in a wacom tablet that I've had for years and it seemed to have installed fine, it made a beeping noise to indicate it had been plugged in and I can move around the mouse fine. But the computer doesn't recognize sensitivity at all. I tried taking it back out of the usb and plugging it back in but that also didn't work. My wacom tablet is an intuos4. Is this an issue on my end? Or is the older tablet not compatible with my new notebook? If it's somethig to do with instalation of the tablet or the new computer, is there something I can do to fix it?

Hi all, I have the following question - bought iphone 5c used a couple of days ago and have 2 issues so far - I have problems charging it - the battery would drain to 0% and will plug it in but will not charge, instead after a while the phone would turn on and stay 1% forever. Tried another charger and it charges but when it is off and charging it does not show the percentage bar on the screen. Secondly - when I turn it on, seems like there is weird light from the top and the screen seems to be no very responsive, when the phone is on.
Return the phone and get your money back,  Then purchase one from an authorized Apple dealer.
Could be you bought a lemon.

  • Macbook pro vibrating chassis speakers with jazz piano acoustic...

I found this post and this is exactly what i experience on my mbp 13" 2011.
I just got a brand new Macbook Pro 17″ three days ago. I am happy about everything except the speakers.
The sound is distorted and on certain frequencies the chassis vibrates. This makes listening to some kinds of music (just to name one: solo piano, either jazz or classical, which tends to have wide dynamics and resonance) almost unbearable.
Of course I never expected the audio of a laptop to be five-star HiFi; but having owned a MBP 17″ of the previous ‘silver key’ series, I know that things weren’t this bad.
On my older machine I could listen to anything, even at top volume, with a clean, round, reasonably good sound. The new one in comparison sounds tinny and fuzzy like a giant FM radio.
I either bought a lemon or there has been a noticeable fall in quality, at least regarding this aspect.
I took it to the retail store yesterday and at first the guy flat out denied hearing any distortion, then the manager acknowledged and said that's normal   The floor model DID not have the vibration to the same songs...
what to do, return and try again errr what?

    KT,  I did do that...
    Check out my review video of the problem and what happened;

  • N8 CONNECTIVITY ISSUE

Hi guys, I have a very unique issue with my 1 day old N8. It will automatically connect itself to the wifi eventhough I have disconnected it. After a while it will refresh itself & get connected again. I have even set the Access point to "ask when needed" but to no avail. I have tried switching the phone "on" & "off." I have also tried hard reset & reformatting the phone. It will be OK after having done the hard reset but only for a while & the issue remains. I noticed that it the issue will return after you have connected to the wifi to enter a website or to download something. Also the wifi icon will appear & disappear as & when it likes. I have called up Nokia Helpline & they just told me to do what I have described above.
Looks like I have bought a "Lemon" & is going into Nokia Service Centre tomorrow.Cheers mate!!!

Tirza, I have even turned off the WLAN scanning but to no avail. Also I have noticed when I am connected to the WLAN, the wifi icon does not appear on the main screen. If you only touch the top right hand corner where the battery indicator is. Only then you will see the wifi icon. However if you go to the main menu, you will see the wifi icon on the right hand corner. I have put the WLAN WIZARD as one of the widgets on my main page. I can monitor the situation with ease.
I have just done a hard reset &  so far it looks OK for now.

  • Photoshop Elements fails

Just loaded Photoshop Elements 4.0 to Macbook with OS X 10.4. Upon opening after install, error message that application cannot launch. It fails onscreen as TWAIN menus are running. Is Elements conflicting with my CS versions of Indesign and Illustrator? I am running Acrobat 6.0. I have an Epson Stylus CX4200 Printer/Copier/Scanner. Is there a conflict with this? I am also having neverending problems setting up Mail with sympatico. Do you think I have bought a lemon mac here?

The mac version of elements cannot use your catalog and does not contain the organizer. If you have tags you want to keep for use on the mac, use the write tags to file command in the Windows organizer, which will convert the tags to metadata keywords the mac version of PE can understand. Depending on your external is formatted and what kind of sharing you've got set up, the mac should be able to see the photos on the external.

  • Pavilion dv6 - laptop receiving power but will not power on

    Pavilion dv6-6c53cl
    Windows 7
As of earlier tonight, I can no longer power on my laptop. (I powered it successfully earlier today.) When the power adapter is plugged in, the indicator light on the laptop next to the power connector socket turns on, so at least the laptop is receiving power. I've tried removing the battery and disconnecting the adapter, draining the power, and reconnecting the adapter with and without the battery in, and in various orders. I've also tried removing and reseating both RAM sticks and the hard drive, all to no avail. Any suggestions?
This is the fourth major failure of this system---the first three were a fan problem just weeks after purchase, a hard drive failure, and another fan problem---since I purchased it 22 months ago, and I feel I've bought a lemon.
I'd like to avoid taking this in for repair if possible, because the local repair contractor (I live in Australia) badly bungled the previous repair: They took several weeks even to start on the repair, failed to fix one problem, and introduced a second, more severe problem (a keyboard failure, which somehow they didn't test despite apparently removing and reseating it when fixing a fan problem). I asked HP support about this, and the rep said there were no other shops near where I live that do in-warranty repairs. Please help!

Can you post the different things you have tried and Current version of OS on this notebook?
Although I am an HP employee, I am speaking for myself and not for HP.

  • Replacement for (bad purchase) 2010 13" MBP?

i moved back to mac two years ago and i've been anticipating a purchase of one of the new macbookpro machines and have been trying to study up. i feel like i made a poor decision when i bought this machine or i bought a lemon or i am simply asking it to do too much. the plan is to give my mom my existing machine and step up to something else. this machine is stock with the exception that i purchased 8 GB or RAM in order to try and solve some problems but I have the original 4 GB and plan to put the 4 back in and sell the 8 GB.
i am an architecture and engineering professional and need a higher performance machine than this 13" model that i didn't realize was not equivalent in power to the 15" or 17".
i don't want to complain but i am wondering if the following issues might be fixed in the new version of this machine:
    1. keys coming loose and already had to replace some of them. now i need to replace more of them.
    2. bottom of case is extremely hot. hot enought so that i can not rest it on my skin.
    3. power case gets alarmingly hot.
    4. fan blows hard and loud sometimes. i actually try to close the case before going out for a bike ride so that i don't worry about a fire or have the machine running like this when i am away.
    5. frequent beachball hangs of ten to twenty seconds or longer in software such as Safari.
    6. dock icons sometimes won't stay where i put them.
    7. bookmark sync gets screwed up every three to four months (i assume this is a mobile me issue).
i've got a first generation macbook pro and i'm still rocking and rolling with this machine and have been extremely happy with the expandability, multiple HD slots etc. Very happy with mac software and with the mac service and the mac genius's etc.
i've seen the posts on the non-serviceability of the retina display models (only retina display models?) and I have been reading up on the no ethernet ports and no disk drive so i am mulling these issues over. all things being equal SSD seems like a good deal.
i seem to be hanging in there OK with the 250 GB HD size.
should i wait for 15" version of retina display? is there a good reason to go with a 15" or 17" macbookpro "normal" model?
    TIA

They need to take some of the programmer and developers back from iPhone OS and put them where they are needed, or hire! because I hear so often the Clueless reasons given that tells me they don't have people with Windows experience, and give false and conflicting "information." Genius my no.
There WAS a problem with SSDs when Intel came out early on; there are or were some problems LAST summer/fall with some SSD models.

I am new to the MAC world and am having trouble with it. Right now i feel like a bought a lemon and am ready to go back to my PC. The one problem I am having is that the dashboard keeps popping up and flashing on the screen. Am I doing something wrong or is something wrong with my MAC?

    Hello James:
    Welcome to Apple discussions.
FWIW, if you go back, you will be the first person I have heard of to do that
Dashboard is invoked at least two ways:
    1. Pressing the F4 key on the keyboard.
    2. Pressing (if you have a wired mouse) the scroll wheel.

  • Was using my iPhone 4 when it turned off on its own

I tried turning it back on and it came back for a few minutes but it turned itself off again. all day this has been happening and has gotten to the point where it's turning off only a second or two after flashing the apple logo. I've tried holding the sleep/wake and home button for 15 seconds while plugged in but that didn't work. I bought it used a couple of days ago and it was working fine the day after I got it but it started having the issues today. Like I said, it's an iPhone 4 and is running the latest iOS. any help is appreciated.

Could be possible that you bought a lemon.
