Bouncing Mail icon

Hi,
I feel silly- but I know someone out there knows this in a New Yors second!
I have a MacBook Pro - everything the latest. With "MAIL" - it used to be when I receive an email - the little icon in the dock bounced, along with the sound effect.
I zereoed my HD - reinstalled everything fresh - and now . . . NO bouncing icon.
I was kinda getting to like him, bouncing around excitedly - I feel like I've lost an old friend!
Anybody know how to get it to bounce when new emails arrive? Everything else, is fine. Is there a preference somewhere?
Thanks,
Larry

Hi Ferd,
Thank you for your response. It seems you are EXACTLY CORRECT! I hae a friend who works for Apple - if you're curious, he said this . . .
"Add a rule in your Mail preferences that can either be global for all new email or for specific emails. You can have it ignore the unimportant ones. The rule can be: if new mail received, then bounce mail icon in dock. As for sound that should just be the General preference for New Mail. You choose which system sound to use. Sometimes system sounds get funky, especially when using other sound sources sound editing/hacking software. This causes all system sounds to stop. You may notice trash not emptying or iChat not being audible for incoming/outgoing messages. To fix this, you need to open Activity Monitor app and force quit the coreaudio process. It'll auto relaunch and your sounds should be back.
Hope this helps,
M"
And this basically completely agrees with you! Thanks again - problem solved!

If your password is accepted, and Mail connects to the account, but you're prompted for the password repeatedly, take each of the following steps that you haven't already tried. Note: these steps don't apply if the server rejects the password. That's a different problem.
    Step 1
When prompted for the password, check the box marked Remember this password in my keychain.
    Step 2
Check that the keychain is working.
    Step 3
Check that the default keychain is unlocked.

  • Mail icon Bounces but doesn't open

when I try to open my mail the mail icon bounces once in the dock and then nothing happens. I have auto update so i'm running the latest software. I can retrieve my mail from a website but I can't see my contacts or anything. No other application seems to be affected.
    Help please!

    HI Sonia,
    Have you tried repairing permissions?
That is always the first thing I do when something doesn't behave as expected.
Choose HD> applications>Utilities>disk utility. Open it and click on your hard drive icon, then choose repair permissions from the bottom of the panel. I don't usually bother to verify first but someone might disagree with me
    Let it run.
I usually go off and have a coffee break or something.
I also take a shot of the finished permissions so that if I have to give anyone information for troubleshooting I have a report of it.
a selective screen shot can be taken by using shift+command[apple key}+4 [all at the same time]
this puts a "pneg picture" on your desktop. I change the name to todays date, keep the pneg extension and file them in a suitably named folder for a month, just to be sure.
Sorry if you knew how to do it. but someone who doesn't might read the post and find it useful.
    Hope this helps
If not post back and maybe someone will have another answer.

  • Is there a way to stop the mail icon from bouncing

Hi all.  Is there a way to stop the mail icon from bouncing on the dock when a new message is received?  It's irritating.  I'm running Lion.  Thanks.

Thank you Linc.  I knew that I did something in system preferences to cause it to bounce, but couldn't remember what I did.  I appreciate your help!  Kelly

  • Mail icon bounces out of the blue

    Hi there.
I've noiticed the Mail icon bounces out of the blue in the dock.
I'm working with other programs or browsign the internet and Mail is calling for attention.
I open the progam, it opens properly, I close it after, and it starts to bounce again, driving me crazy.
Any ideas how to make it stop?
    Thanks!

    Reported fixes:
"I ended up repairing Permissions and resetting PRAM and that stopped the problem somehow"
"I would remove the icon from the Dock and drag the application back to the Dock to create a new one. That normally corrects it."
    Other options:
Do a Safe boot then restart normally.
    *  shutdown
    *  start the Mac and *wait* for the startup chime to sound
    *  after the sound, press and hold down the shift key
    *  keep holding and *wait* until the grey  Apple logo appears
    *  now release the shift key and just wait (it could take a few minutes)
    *  eventually the login screen appears with the words SAFE BOOT

  • Bouncing dock icon when I get New Mail??

Is it possible to have the Mail icon in my dock to bounce up and down to alert me that new mail has arrived? I prefer to use dock hiding setting, and so it would be nice to see at quick glance if new mail has arrived when I return to my desk.
This feature is available for Microsoft Entourage for Mac, but how about for Mail?

You could set up a rule as follows:
If {any/all} of the following conditions are met:
    {Every Message}
    Perform the following actions:
    {Bounce Icon in Dock}
Such a rule would have a couple of drawbacks, though.
One is that, once Mail starts bouncing, the only way to stop it is by making Mail the active application. It may seem no big deal... until you realize that it happens even if Mail is already the active application...
Another problem is that, because the junk filter is evaluated after all the other rules, Mail will bounce in the Dock for newly arrived junk mail as well...

  • Mail icon bounce

Have a preference set to bounce the mail icon, but icon continues to bounce after mail is read. I need to close the mail application and reopen to stop the bounce. I thought it was supposed to stop after the message/s were read.

    Hi Appleal,
I thought it was supposed to stop after the message/s were read.
It could be a corrupted Dock preference, but before to trash the preferences file do the following first ...
NO, normally the bouncing stops after the application is launched.
Go to the Apple Logo in the menu bar an select Dock>Dock Preferences ... Now deselect the bouncing by opening application(s).
Now open any application from the Dock an quit it again after launching.
Now do the same again to go to the Dock>Dock Preferences an select AGAIN bouncing by opening application(s).
TEST again when you launch a application from the DOCKK ...
Post bak with the results ...

  • Bouncing dock icon

I've set up the bouncing dock icon.
But in Thunderbird, it would bounce and once TB got focus (even without clicking the dock icon), it would stop bouncing.
In Mail, this is not the case, I have to click the dock icon to stop the bouncing. Is this fixable?

I have to click the dock icon to stop the bouncing. Is this fixable?
There's nothing to fix; it's normal behavior. Why don't you just turn off the bouncing Dock icon, since you don't need it to check your mail?

  • Outlook for Mac 2011 doesn't bounce dock icon for new message

Under "Outlook Preferences -> Notifications & Sounds" I have the option selected "Bounce Outlook icon in Dock" for new messages. But the icon doesn't bounce when I get a new email. I'd really like for that to work - is this a known
issue or a local config issue?

    Hi,
Please first note that the option only applies when Outlook is not the active application. In addition, it appears that the icon bounces when you first select the Outlook application to open it. If you want the icon to bounce when new mail arrives
you will need to create a rule for that.
Since this forum is for general questions and feedback related to Outlook for Windows, if above doesn't applies, I'd recommend you post a new question in the forum for Mac for further assistance:

  • Bouncing dock icon for all new incoming messages?

I set a rule to bounce my dock icon when new messages come in. I now have a 2nd account active, but the new messages for this acct. don't activate the bounce rule. How can I get them to do so?
    TIA,
    Nick D.

How exactly is the rule used to bounce Mail in the Dock defined?
Could it be that the messages from your second account are being processed by other rules?

  • Mail icon wont open after ios update on iphone 5

After the IOS update today, my mail icon will not open and the screen seems to have lost sensitivity. Any suggestions? Thanks.

  • When I click on the mail icon on my iPad 2 the mail accounts do not show up.

    iPad 2 32GB Version 8.1.1
When I click on the Mail icon, the mail accounts do not appear. The screen is blank except in the he upper right corner of the screen I can see mini icons: flag, folder, file box, arrow, and pad/pencil mini icon.
I've been having a number of issues with Facebook ever since I upgraded to Version 8, so I don't know if this is a version issue or something else.
    I've tried rebooting/restarting, etc. Nada.
    I'd appreciate any suggestions.
    Thanks.

Close all apps and then reset the iPad. If that does work, reset all settings.
In order to close apps, you have to drag the app up from the multitasking display. Double tap the home button and you will see apps lined up going left to right across the screen. Swipe to get to the app that you want to close and then swipe "up" on the app preview thumbnail to close it.
Next, reset the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider if it appears on the screen - let go of the buttons. Let the iPad start up.
Reset all settings. Settings>General>Reset>Reset all Settings. You will not lose any data, but most of the device settings will have to be entered in the settings app again.
FWIW, I don't use Facebook at all, the app or in a browser, but I have read more that a few posts here where people that use the app all the time claim that is very buggy and causes all sorts of problems for them. Maybe closing the app along with the reset will help.
