Branching in Flash?

I am new to Flash and AS3 and would like to know whether it
is possible to create AS3 code that will allow users to navigate to
selected content or to be directed to select content.
For example, can users be querried as to whether they would
like to see more detailed explanations and then directed to these
explanations? Similarly, can I set up a multiple-choice question
and direct them to different content depending on their responses?
I know this functionality can be achieved in Capitvate and,
to a lesser extent, in th Flash elearning templates. However, these
are all AS2 applications and I would prefer to use AS3.
I am not asking how to achieve this functionality in AS3.
Rather, I want to know whether it is feasible to assess whether I
should invest time learning AS3.
Thanks in advance!

Are you using a preloader? The preloader option in captivate
is a checkmary and a selected preloader in the settings. Try the
same thing with NO Preloader. When preloaders are enabled, the
movie must load into memory by about 60% or so before starting the
Captivate presentation.
Can you break this doen into several projects where each
project closes and then calls the next project? This has been the
ongoing workaround for this kind of issue for many years. It is
very good that you isolated this and reported it to Adobe because
bugs are much easier to fix with broken examples.
Unfortunately, Adobe seems to not patch anything and many of
the reported bugs are still broken, going all the way back to Robo
Demo from e-Help. Newer versions of Captivate seem to have more
features and few repairs, an odd combination. Patches are basically
never issued, except for a recent Captivate 2 patch for audio
driver problems.
The weird thing is that patching things now would make more
sense because Adobe would get real-world testing and validation of
the repairs and it would quiet down this message board for certain
problem areas. Even the nearly "perfect" Microsoft Corporation
patches everything, despite very good reliability.
You are to be commended for getting Adobe to see your issue
and more people need to complain. Anyone taking bets on this one
not getting fixed?

  • Security sandbox violation when URL doesn't have 'www'

I am loading an external swf file from the same domain into my main flash movie using an absolute path: "http://www.sitename.com/movie.swf". The problem is that when someone goes to the site without the 'www' in the address: "http://sitename.com" - the movie throws a sandbox error upon trying to load the 2nd movie.
    I have a crossdomain in place set to: <allow-access-from domain="*" secure="false"/>.
I also have: Security.allowDomain("*"); in the document class of the main movie.
I realize I could use a relative path to load the movie instead of the absolute path, but shouldn't the cross domain file and/or the allowDomain command take care of the security issues? Is there another workaround besides the relative path?
    Thanks,
    Amanda

The crossdomain should work.  Check to make sure you have it set up properly.
Another workaround is to use the LocalConnection class to grab the current domain.  We do this at my company, where we distribute files out to the local server of the branch.
    import flash.net.LocalConnection;
    var lc:LocalConnection = new LocalConnection();
    var myIP:String = lc.domain();
    var pathToLoad = "http://"+myIP+"/movie.swf";

  • Re: original Adobe Reader problem, branched off to Flash Player forum

    Hello Pat,
Thanks a ton for your reply.
I have another technical problem I am facing. There is an educational site which I visit which has a lot of video tutorials in it. Sometimes, the videos play for me, and other times, they just don't play. Could there be a problem with my Adobe Flash Player?
    Please help!
    Regards
    NM

    Hello Pat,
I went to the link you mentioned in this thread:
    http://forums.adobe.com/thread/945765
and I clicked on the Auto-detect link in Mozilla Firefox. The result for the Graphics Driver was this:
A customized computer manufacturer driver is installed on your computer. The Intel Driver Update Utility is not able to update the driver. Installing a generic Intel driver instead of the customized computer manufacturer driver may cause technical issues. Contact your computer manufacturer for the latest driver for your computer.

Blocking downloads to hard drive, but not flash drives
A nonprofit has asked me to configure new Windows 7 computers so that all content is BLOCKED from the hard drive, but any downloads may be downloaded to the individual's flash drive.
The nonprofit allows individuals to play games, check e-mails, but we have a problem with them trying to upgrade Firefox, Google, etc.
They want all configuration to the DEFAULT STATUS after a person log off the computer....no upgrades to any programs!
I will occasionally upgrade programs once a month or so, as the volunteer administrator.
They have changed the controls from Windows ME and XP, when I was a computer programmer and installer (I also worked during Windows 3.11, 95 and 98/98 SE versions as well)...
    Anyone help me, please?

    1. You can change security with cacls function. However if you do it in wrong way, you can cut the branch you are sitting on:
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb490872.aspx
    2. If you are working in Active Directory, consider Group Policy
    3. Consider third pty software for granular access control (DeviceLock,...)
    4. There is nearly nothing that you can transfer from previous technologies. (Even nice
steady state in Windows XP has no continuation. Consider
    kiosk mode in Windows 8.1)

  • Problems with Firefox 13. Can't see online audio file player. Video only works on some sites. All works OK in I.E. Updated Flash. No Change

Problems began when Firefox 13 automatically updated. tried downloading latest version of Flash 11.2.202.235. No change.
Video works sometimes on YouTube, not at all on most other sites.
Audio player not working at all. Either not even visible or downloads to real player versus playing within application such as Amazon.
Tried enabling/disabling Add ons to find culprit. No luck.
Everything as it should be in Internet Explorer.
On my WordPress site has MP3 audio files, and uses a flashplayer to display and play music files. With flash player on, nothing displays at all, (bank space where audio player would normally be displayed)
If I disable shock wave flash, a text link is displayed that downloads the MP3 in a new window (quick player), Also video doesn't work on any website. If I disable Flash and quicktime, text link to audio file downloads to realplayer.

hello msandman, there have been quite a few issues with adobe's latest flash update - can you try if flash content is showing up correctly again, when you disable the real-player components like mentioned in the following article: [[Flash 11.3 doesn't load video in Firefox]]?
otherwise you could also try to remove flash 11.3 from the windows control panel/programs section & [http://forums.adobe.com/thread/889580 downgrade to the 10.3 branch of the plugin], which is still receiving security updates.

  • Adobe Flash Player crashes on Firefox (NetSteam, Stratus)

    Flash Player version: 11,8,800,97 (last)
    OS: Windows 7
    Browser: Mozilla Firefox 22.0 (last)
Problem: Adobe Flash Player crashes on Firefox, when runnig project with such elements like NetSteam, Stratus.
When problem happen: Only when some streamed data is incoming, after random time. Time before crash can be 4 minutes, it also can be 2 minutes. Memory leaks or disk space usage didn't change and don't seem to be a reason. Problem happen when I was testing my voice chat together with few people. At one moment it crashed at few computers at the same time (which were using Firefox). Then we had luck with repeating this problem several times - simply by asking one of us to play any music into Microphone. Then Firefox Flash Player always crashing.
Here you can see repeating of problem: http://youtu.be/BdkoQxloyDA
It also show that it does not crashes if nobody is sending audio stream in created group, but it does when somebody is sending audio stream. In that video I'm repeating problem by myself, with help of one computer and 2 tabs of Flash Player. First is running in Chrome, second in Firefox. Player in Chrome is used to send system sound from speakers to peer group. Player in Firefox is listening and playing everything he hears (this is why I set it's volume to near 1).
    Here is .swf :

It's very simplified voice chat which only displays streams which are being heared. It's adding " is talking" when stream is sending data. "g" parameter is a group name, I think you can choose any, but tests were made with this one.
Hope it helps. If you will need .fla file - just tell me.

Firefox on Win8 isn't very stable.  We're collaborating with Mozilla on improvements, and my test results with the daily development builds are really promising, but it will be a few more weeks before they actually make it to production releases.
In the meantime, you're way better off using IE or Chrome.

  • 4/15/2014 - Beta - Flash Player 13.0.0.199

The latest Flash Player 13 builds are now available.  You can download Flash Player here: http://www.adobe.com/go/flashplayerbeta.
New Features for Flash Player 13:
Enhanced Supplementary Character Support for TextField
Characters from the Basic Multilingual Plane (BMP) with Unicode code points between U+10000 and U+10FFFF now work correctly in TextField controls.  This change greatly enlarges the code point range we support, and now includes characters like emoticons and complex CCJK characters.
    New Stage3D Texture Wrapping Modes
Developers can currently set the wrapping mode of a texture to either clamp or repeat.  Using the repeat option will repeat the texture on both the U and V axis.  However, in some use cases, you may only want to repeat the texture on either the u or v axis.
This is now possible with the introduction of two new parameters:  REPEAT_U_CLAMP_V and CLAMP_U_REPEAT_V
    Stage3D Anti-Aliasing for Texture Rendering
Anti-Aliasing is a useful for improving perceived image quality.  Hardware based Multisampling Anti-Aliasing (MSAA) is now available on all desktop platforms.  To enable MSAA, set the level from 0 to 4 using the antiAlias property of the Context3D.setRenderToTexture() method.
    0 = 1 subsample, no antialiasing
    1 = 2 subsamples, minimum quality antialiasing
    2 = 4 subsamples, medium quality antialiasing
    3 = 8 subsamples, high quality antialiasing
    4 = 16 subsamples, maximum quality antialiasing
Relocated Full Screen Video Warning to Top of Screen
We've made a small tweak to the "Press Esc to exit full screen mode" warning that is displayed for full screen video.  We've received feedback from developers and users that the dialog obscures content.  We wanted to make a change that both satisfies security concerns and customer viewing enjoyment.  To reduce the impact of the dialog on the on-screen content, we've moved the dialog to the top of the screen.

    About the Beta Channel
Beta Versions of Flash Player are available for automatic installation via our Background Updateservice. Please subscribe to automatically install or receive update availability notifications at runtime.

We launched the ESR to provide pain relief for network administrators, but it came long after the background update service was built, and it's not currently designed to handle multiple parallel branches.  Supporting the ESR via background update is on our product backlog, but it's not likely to get done for a while.  Just getting the ESR was the first battle, and we're making incremental improvements as time allows.
The really big organizations that we were targeting with the ESR typically run their own in-house auto-update servers or they push all updates through their own management tools (AD/SCUP/SMS/etc).  Those organizations typically have onerous testing requirements for distributing feature-bearing updates, so the ESR was really designed to minimize the testing burden on those IT departments -- streamlining the distribution is something we want to do, but it was more important to just make it available as an option for distribution.
You can find details on running your own auto-update server in the administration guide, but it's non-trivial and we're still working out the kinks (notifications slip through in some edge-cases, etc).  There's also a good rundown on the customization options for various updates.  You may be better off using your standard software management tools to distribute updates in the short-term, depending on your environment's complexity and available resources:

  • Flash Player / Content Loading Issues

A big hello to anyone kind enough to read this!... Hopefully someone can can help me out or point me in the right direction.
The company that I am currently contracting for is involved in the testing of a number of pieces of Flash courseware that one of our associated companies have created. It has been authored in Flash CS3, but uses Actionscript 2.0. The user's target platform is Flash player 9 on Windows XP.
While testing the latest version through Flash player 9 (ActiveX within IE 7) we have discovered that the external movieclip loading does not work correctly, with the movie clips appearing in random location on some PC's, but no on others....
..To add even more strange-ness to this, if we right-click and select the "About Flash Player" menu option, wait for the Adobe web page to load, close the courseware window and re-launch it while the Adobe web page is still open in another browser, then the courseware runs fine.
Just wondering if anyone out there has run into similar problems? We are currently experimenting with various IE settings and other security issues such as MMS.cfg and Trust Files, but at the minute we have to admit we are stuck.
Attached are some images illustrating what is going: "correct_load.png" is when it works as it should do and "incorrect_load" is what it looks like when the troubles start.
    Thanks!

Thanks for the advice..  At this point it's like banging our heads against a brick wall..
Strangely enough on some machines the problem does not seem to happen at all.  We have tried four PCs so far and two have worked, two have failed.  On the machines that failed to run it correctly we have recently uninstalled Flash Player 9 ActiveX and installed the latest Flash Player 10 ActiveX.
The same problem is present on the machines, despite the fact we have added the C:\path\to\content path to settings in the Settings Manager.
We have also added both Global and User Trust Files with the same path and an all-encompassing "C:\", which we know that the customer's machines will have limited installation rights and no access to the internet.  On the machines that do run the courseware, they do not either have the local paths as entries on the Settings Managers or in any kind of Trust File.  The only difference is that the machines that run the courses are machines that have a full version of Flash (either 8 and/or CS3) installed on them, but I can not see any reason while this would have an effect?
Like you mention, it would be a good place to start looking at the loading line by line - however, the Manchester branch of the group have pretty much refused to give us access the *.fla files (it's a (barely) working relationship between us, not really one built on trust).  I'll pass on your ideas and leave it up to them I think!  It would be sensible if we did have FireFox v. IE testing, but most unhelpfully, FireFox is on the list of "controlled applications" and so we can't use it here.
Anyway, thanks for the reply and help.  I was curious to see what effect having the Adobe page open had on the player, since with previous Flash content we as a company and myself personally have produced have not encountered anything like this.

  • Flash Player crashes on Firefox and Windows 8

I too have this problem and it occurred after Firefox's recent update.
The Flash Player crashes any time I open a website with embedded Flash videos.
I cannot watch anything that requires Flash Player and when on Facebook, the pages continually crash. I send a crash report each time then reload and it crashes again. I send about 20 reports per hour and am sick of it and have started using another browser where I do not have this problem but my preferred browser is Firefox.
I have Firefox 35.0.1 which is the latest  version.
My operating system is Windows 8
The plugin I have for Flash Player is Firefox, Mozilla - NPAPI 16.0.0.296 however when I check with Flash Player, it tells me the version I have is 16.0.0.235.
When I try to upgrade, I am informed that my version is up to date.
    Steps taken
    - updated Flash Player
    - Cleared caches
    - Unchecked hardware acceleration in Firefox.
I cannot find the menu for Flash Player as I'd like to try to disable hardware accelerator there too.

  • Flash Player constantly crashes on Firefox and Chrome, works on Safari

    Hello!
This is my first time posting here. I've been working on this all day and have made NO progress.
I'm on a Mac OS X 10.9.3 (this was also happening with 10.9.2, I applied the 10.9.3 update today hoping it would make difference).
ANY version of Flash Player I've installed today has worked fine on Safari, and not worked on both Chrome and Firefox. I've uninstalled reinstalled both Firefox and Chrome many times. Both browsers are up to date (Chrome v34, Firefox v29). There are no logs or anything ever.
The plugin runs for a little bit then dies. I've tried reverting to version 12, and version 11, neither made a difference. I've done the whole disable the pepper plugin with Chrome and had Chrome using the other one I had installed. No difference.
I'm OUT of ideas and can't find any other information or help with this. PLEASE HELP!

  • Issue with video playback in Flash Player

I am currently doing some voluntary work for my mom for the local branch of the Alzheimer Foundation. Now I have encoded a video to mpeg4/h.264 and F4V using the Adobe Media Encoder only I am having not much luck to get it successfully played. Now is my question what could I be doing wrong? I already tried to use ActionScript 2 and 3 and disabled GZIP compression on the server and even tried different files like H.264 and F4V.
The strange thing is that the video always work just fine when being tested in Flash CS4 10.2 but when I tried it in the browser it fails. The Test Movie feature of Flash is using the following player version MAC 10,0,12,36. I am using 10,0,32,14 MAC in my Safari browser and their the movie plays fine once the file is fully downloaded (how can I change this?) only when let friends try it out which have version 10,0,32,18 or the same version it doesn't work for them. Also when I am using an older version doesn't seem to work. I thought that H.264 support was added in some version of Flash Player 9. One of the issues which I was getting that the video playback worked lovely in Test Movie with the below listed alzheimer.mp4 url but when testing after the SWF and HTML were uploaded to the webserver it failed to work and I was receiving a FileStructureInvalid error. Now I would expect that the video file would fail in Test Movie too when the video file structure is invalid.
I have tried the following video files both encoded with Adobe Media Encoder:
    http://www.letslearn.it/dropbox/alzheimer.mp4
    http://www.letslearn.it/dropbox/alzheimer08.f4v
The current player can be found at:
    http://www.letslearn.it/dropbox/alzheimer.html
I have attached my As3 version of the Flash file which is normal easy video stuff.
Anyone happen to know what could be the issue here? I am getting desperate!

Yes, I have just used the normal Video-object together with the normal trick to load Flash Video files with it. Nothing special only with a full URL for the play()-method. I have attached the source code for your convenience. The original files are edited in Premiere Pro CS4 and are based on one original ripped DVD vob file and a newly created Quicktime-based slideshow animation which has then be edited into one using Premiere.
After that I  have selected the sequence of the Premiere project which I have exported using File > Export which is using Adobe Media Encoder. For the encoding I haved used the Export Settings: "Format FLV | F4V", Codec On2 VP6 and then altered the video size and bitrate so that the file size gets smaller this is for the Alzheimer08.f4v file. The other file used the H.265 Web Medium profile with also the video size and bitrate modified after it got encoded and uploaded to my webserver.
The original files used by the Premiere Pro project are:
    VTS_01_1.dv
    Type: DV Stream
    File Size: 2.6 GB
    Image Size: 720x576
    Average Data Rate: 3.4 MB/Second
    Compressor: DV - PAL
    Quality: Normal (3.00)
    SLIDESHOW 2.mov
    Type: QuickTime Movie
    File Size: 3.2 GB
    Image Size: 720 x 576
    Average Data Rate: 3.4 MB/Second
    Compressor: DV - PAL
    Quality: Most (5.000)
Above information is obtained in Premiere Pro by selected Properties-option of the submenu when selecting the file.
Hopefully you can use this information but I could upload the original Premiere Pro project over the next few days. If you would be interested in it.

  • Posing a question for those well versed in flash and flex

I would like to start an off-line communication chat with those of you who are well versed in Flash and Flex.
I've worked with Cold Fusion but I am not up to date on all the technologies available.  This seems like the perfect forum for this question.
I simply want to build an application (web or desktop is unknown) in which a person can learn a foreign language, in this case English.
I need some technical advice as to whether Flash, Flex, or a combination of technologies (Cold Fusion for server side functionality) is the best choice for this application.  I do not understand the technical aspects of Flash or Flex in building applications so I need the advice of you experts.
As with most foreign language textbooks, audio, or foreign language video training, the material is not interesting, not pertinent to daily life, and is great for late night insomnia.  I've never seen any type of foreign language training that is interesting, fun, or uses current events as part of the curriculum.
I would like to illustrate my idea with an example.  I want to use an existing English beginners textbook (for kids), scan the images in the textbook, store the content (rules of grammar) in a database and store example sentences in a database.
I would like to record basic audio sentences from the textbook (Do you know tomorrow's weather), incorporate some animation (baseball player hitting a home run), incorporate some basic video (purchasing an item at the grocery store), add a quiz, test question or puzzles, etc..
In addition, since this is a classroom setting and the kids are split into groups, I would like to store a seating chart with the kids names and pictures in a database.  After the first segment is finished (e.g. purchasing a toy at the store) the kids next perform an activty.  I want to use a combination of audio, video, and animation to explain the activity, give instructions, split the class into groups, and perform the activity.
As I mentioned before, I would like to start an off-line discusion for those of you who are willing to share some of you knowledge and experience with both Flash and Flex.  Since you are extremely busy, maybe you might be able to point me in the right direction.
Hopefully, some of you can provide some sound technical advice.
    Thanks in advance
    Michael Poplawski

This is an abitious project even for some-one well versed in flex/flash, i have to give you points for outstanding courage on this .
You need to cover quite a few areas in a project like this both for the client and the back end, you need a strong understanding of animation(either through code or the flash timeline), data parsing, logic trees for the quiz/test elements and a lot more before the first line of code would be written.
In Australia there are already a few companies using flex for online educational applications and at least 1 state educational Authority. A search on the internet will find several sites pertaining to flash/flex based online education software and this would be a starting point to give you an idea of the strength flex has in this area.
Beyond this it is not the sort of project that 'help' would be readily available for unless it was relating to very specific issues you could readily define. Also this is not the best forum to request this type of help as the forum is more about testing a beta product. I am sure that if you start learning about flex and have trouble understanding different aspects of how things work there will be plenty of support from the flex community.

  • Flash menu target help

Well because I am only a year old to flash I bought a program
called Flash Menu Labs which helps me create a horizontal menu with
many branches. I have figured out how to import this into my
project using the loader component but i have some other questions.
I can add links to my menu items within Flash menu labs using
the open method and _self, _blank, _top, _parent but not sure which
one to use or how to get it to gotoandplay or how to open another
swf within my current project. So when I click one of my menu items
it will actually open or goto a frame in the project that i put the
    menu.
Hope that makes some sense. I have enclosed some pictures to
help make some sense of this. The first picture shows the Flash
Menu Labs menu i created and you can see it works using the loader
component. The second picture shows the actual Flash Menu labs
    layout screen.

This is not fully featured Flash application but tool
    designated to crate just menus
and out put them into SWF format - Flash Player compatible .
    You don't have the freedom
to add on your own action script, except the getURL requests.
    You need actual Adobe Flash
authoring program to create Fla/SWF files and be able to use
    action script at will.
I don't believe you will be able to even work on "Flash Menu
    Labs" files. Beside export
to SWF, this tool has nothing to do with Adobe Flash. Using
