Brand new, getting started in Mac, iOS programming

Hi, I want to start learning to program Mac and iOS apps. I have no prior programming background and REALLY want to learn. Where is a good place to start learning to program for Mac and iOS? I have bought a couple textbooks and watched some tutorials. Would appreciate any input and help.

Vesper,
you don't need to go too in depth into cocoa development if your goal is to develop Open-GL games.. in fact if you know C/C++ you really don't need to know much Obj-C at all...
There's a book from pangea software here that was recently made free that talks about OpenGL game programming on the mac, it might be worth checking out.
http://www.pangeasoft.net/book/index.html
That book will teach you how to open an opengl window, and you can go from there using free resources. Warning though much of it is slightly advanced.
You certainly don't need Hillegass if you're looking to develop OpenGL games. Hillegass's book is "the" Cocoa book, but almost completely useless when it comes to developing OpenGL games. It would be both a waste of time and money if your interest is games programming. It would actually be more relevant to learn how to program DirectX games on Windows than to study Hillegass's book as there are many books that outline creation of a game engine on that platform, but you will need to adapt things for OpenGL rendering.

  • So I formatted a brand new hard drive to MAC OS (Journal), I then could save on the hard drive. Not two days later Im back at square one, the program wont recognize the hard drive again.

So, hard to beleive, but I am having some trouble with Final Cut Pro X.
This last week I formatted a brand new hard drive to MAC OS (Journal),
so that I could save on that hard drive.
    Well it went great.
I saved my project on there and copied a few others over as to free up space on my Laptop.
Then, not two days later Im back at square one,
the program wont recognize the hard drive.
It wont even open the events up off my hard drive,
as to jog the program into reqcognizing the scratch disk (which worked twice before).
    What happened?
How do I get the program to re-recongize my newly formatted hard drive?
    Please help!

The name of the drive, or the name of some folders inside the drive, may fool FCP X into believing it is a camera.
Also, you should not use the drive for time machine backups.

I accidentally synced my mum's brand new iPad to my mac book air. A few days later I realised that my iTune library on my mac is completely gone. So is my iPhone 4s after I synced it with my mac. How do I get my old iTunes library back? I tried using icloud on my iphone but it stated that I have never back up my phone before. So I guess my iCloud data is gone too? But I have back up my mac in my harddrive using time machine. So how do I get my old itune library back? Please help! Thanks!

    1) ensure iTunes is authorized for your iTunes store account(s)
    2) connect your device and right-click or control-click it in the iTunes Source list, then choose transfer purchases from the shortcut menu that appears.
    3) sync the device
iTunes will wipe the iPhone but, since you transferred your purchases in the previous step, your content will be in your library and you can re-populate the iPhone with it.
above works for purchases from the iTunes store. for everything else, check out this post by Zevoneer.

    Polly,
usually there are multiple models of MacBook Pro per model number, but in the case of your model number (A1502), there’s currently only one model for that model number: 13-inch Late 2013.
To reset your MacBook Pro, you’ll need to boot into Recovery mode by holding down a Command key and the R key as you start it up. When the Mac OS X Utilities menu appears, select Disk Utility. On the left-hand side of the Disk Utility window, select your internal disk (most likely the top item of the list). On the right-hand side, select the Erase tab. For the Format dropdown, select “Mac OS Extended (Journaled)”. For the Name input box, “Macintosh HD” has traditionally been the default name — I don’t know if that’s still the case for the Late 2013 models. After that, press the Erase… button, and erase its entire internal disk. When it’s finished with the erasure, exit Disk Utility, and select Shut Down from the Apple menu. When you start it up again, OS X Internet Recovery will redownload Mavericks from Apple’s servers and reïnstall it on your internal disk. Once it has reïnstalled, run Software Update to get it up to date, and adjust the System Preferences to your taste.

What hardware, software, etc. is required to get started developing with iOS? Looking to get started...
    Thanks!

You need an Intel Mac, at least OS X 10.6.8 (Lion if you intend full capability) and Xcode.

  • Newbie looking to get started in Mac programming

    Hi,
I have a handful of ksh scripts written for Leopard, I would like to create an interface/wrapper in C++, ref existing system prefs, to bring everything together under a suite of commands and eventually rewrite the shell scripts into C++. Is there a preferred C++ application and help resources, samples, etc to get started?

On macintosh, the preferred language is Objective-C, and the preferred framework is Cocoa. The tools to develop in Objective-C/Cocoa (and also other languages) are installable using your Leopard install disk, or you can download them on the [ADC website|http://developer.apple.com>.
You also have the documentations that go with it, and a lot of courses about Cocoa and Objective-C programming.

  • Spill on keyboard 15" BRAND NEW!! I MAC PRO - HELP!!!!

OK incidents do occur but without going into details lets just say the blame can be proportioned later.
A spill of fresh orange juice and a little vodka (approx volume - a mouthful) has just occurred to the keyboard on my brand new I Mac Pro 15" laptop. I instantly kit the off power key and turned the unit upside down.
    Q1. What next
Q2. Any Chance my Credit Card will cover this
Q3. What are the likely scenario and the worst?
Q4. Should I give up drinking vodka

A1. Take the machine to an authorized service provider to have the keyboard and perhaps some other parts replaced. The warranty on your machine is now gone, and will only be reinstated after you've had an authorized service provider restore the machine to new condition by replacing every part that got wet. OJ is about the worst thing you could have spilled on it.
A2. Ask your credit card issuer.
A3. The best case is that only the KB needs replacing and you'll get off with a repair cost of $200-$300. If the glop got past the keyboard and onto the logic board, expect a repair cost of roughly $1000. And if anything besides the KB and LB got wet (the speakers, the display hinge area, the trackpad, the MagSafe port, etc.), plan to replace the computer at your own expense.
A4. You should give up drinking vodka, and you should give up drinking anything at all (including water) anywhere near a computer — your own or anyone else's. You should also give up having your computer anyplace where other people are drinking anything.

  • Brand new iPod Touch, updated to iOS 4.2.1, WiFi no longer working

Bought my kids brand new 4G iPod Touches for Xmas, set them up and they worked fine. Last night, when I connected them to sync some new apps, iTunes prompted me to update the OS to 4.2.1, which I did. Now, the iPods can no longer connect to my Time Capsule. I have tried resetting the network settings, rebooting the iPod, even resetting my TC, and nothing seems to work. My Internet connection is fine, as all other computers in the house can get online just fine.
Any ideas or suggestions? This is really frustrating. Thanks!

I tried doing a restore on the iPod, twice. Once with a restore from backup, and then again as a new device. Still no WiFi. I'm really not happy about this. I'm almost certain it was the update to 4.2.1 that broke it.
    Please help!!!

  • HT1119 I recently purchased a brand new battery for my mac book pro and if I allow my computer to run out of charge and plug it in just moments later it can take up to 40 minutes to turn back on again!

Is anyone else having this problem? I rely on my computer heavily for work and school and this is just not acceptable! After paying $125 for a brand new battery I would have never expected these problems.

I'm sure that if you search hard enough, you'll find someone else who has had a similar problem, but that does not mean that it is remotely normal or common.  Apple definitely needs to replace the machine, but don't be afraid that the same thing will happen with the new one.
Of course, that's assuming that this wasn't a case of user error.  It's hard to understand how it could be, but in my years of tech support, I've learned to never discount such possibilities.  I've seen people do things like forceably shove plugs into the wrong ports, seemingly oblivious to the fact that it doesn't fit and insistent that it should.

  • Please Help: Brand new to Logic and Mac at the same time

    Dear Board,
I joined the Mac family yesterday and have done pretty well with getting Logic and Cubase 4 installed on the Mac. (It's like trying to learn Spanish when you're from Alabama)
However, when I assign an instrument track to ESX sampler, no libraries or presets come up. I can hear one sound, but when I pull down the menu to load another sound, there are no other sounds to be found. Do I have them stored in the wrong place or did they not automatically load when I installed Logic?
Specifically, I am looking for a decent acoustic piano sound, but can't make it work.
I migrated from Logic 5 on PC to this setup yesterday, so it's all new to me. Any help you can give will be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    B3
Mac Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   Logic 7.2

Well a fellow Las Vegan, that is something I
havent seen since I have been on this forum.
Anyway welcome and good choice to go with
Logic Pro 7. This app is a constant challenge.
First I have to ask an obvious question, did you
install the contents disc? That is the one with all
the samples on it. Since you have been using a
different version, I assume you know how the
EXS works so that should not be the issue.
If you click on the black area no menus come up?
Or do empty menus come up? We will get it going,
this sounds like misplaced files. Phil

  • Brand New eMac starts but no video

I have a eMac in a classroom that was bought in the summer and imaged and working fine 3 weeks before school. School time comes around and everything starts up but the video... You can hear the HD loading everything and the startup light comes on as well as the chime. But never any video.
I tried resetting the PRAM, booting from a cd, tried the external to see if it would work... and nothing. I just need a way of narrowing down to what it is, so I can replace it.

Just to clarify, when you were trying to boot from a CD, was this the first OS X Tiger Install CD from the Tiger DVD media exchange (which requires the eMac in question to have a CD-ROM or CD-RW drive only, not the standard combo or super drive) or from the OS X Install DVD? If the boot CD was a troubleshooting / utilities homebrew burned disc, have you checked that the disc will boot other late-model eMacs?
Since you're getting the power light and hard drive noise, the main power management has to be working. There have been problems with Macs failing to wake properly from sleep, but booting from the OS X Install disc should bypass that problem. It would most likely be soemthing blown in the CRT/analog assembly hardware. That's not a user-servicable assembly (the voltage on the CRT yoke is dangerous) and a school Mac purchased this past summer will still be under the one-year hardware warrenty. You could contact an Apple Authorized Service Provider (AASP) or more typically in a school setting, contact the school's vendor.
If there's student or teacher data that needs to be recovered, you can use another Firew0re/OS X equipped Mac as the host to retrieve the files off the damaged Mac as the client using FireWire target disk mode.

  • Where can I get a good Mac FTP program?

My question give you points :P Help!?

There's also the ftp program which is bundled as a standard part of Unix and can be used from within Terminal. It works but it's not exactly user friendly.
If you're using Dreamweaver to upload web sites, then I recommend you use the FTP (Sites) facilities built into DW as it makes life really simple.
