Brand new laptop, noisy (?)hard drive

Hi everybody!
I was recently bought a new HP laptop for Christmas (a Notebook 15-r160sa).
Anyway, I've noticed that it has a very constant 'bitty' noise. It's not immediately obvious, but when trying to do work on it in a quiet room it's very annoying. I don't think it's a fan or the optical drive - it seems like it might be the hard drive, because it's a noise I'm familiar with on other computers when it's loading something. However, this is very audible and very consistent. I have recorded a clip of the noise, but I don't
I took it to PC World to have it looked at and was advised that it's "probably" not a fault but, rather simply the way the laptop is designed.
I'm hoping to get some clarification from someone on here as to whether the noise is the sign of a fault or if it is the design of the laptop.
Thanks!

Hi, Huffer. Thanks for responding again. I've uploaded a recording here: http://vocaroo.com/i/s0wGCzEbMuzG
Sorry it's not the greatest quality audio, but it should give you the idea. That's the level it's at when the computer's at rest with no applications and minimal processes running.
It probably doesn't sound like a whole lot is actually wrong, but it's a lot nosier than I'm used to from a computer and unfortunately it's terribly distracting when I'm trying to work.
Anywho, would be very appreciative if someone could let me know what the noise is and whether it's indicative of a fault, or just the way the laptop is designed?
Thank you

  • New Laptop, Old Hard Drive

I recently purchased a new laptop because the motherboard on my old laptop died. My old hard drive was fine however, and I have transferred all of my old files onto my new laptop. However, when I attempt to listen to one of the songs I purchased from iTunes, I get a message that says, "The song 'X' could not be used because the original file could not be found. Would you like to locate it?" I am then required to go through the process of locating the file in my iTunes folder and double-cliking on it. This is time-consuming and every single song is marked with a "!" thus indicating that the file cannot be located. Please help me!

What that means about "song cannot be found" is the folder where u had that song has been moved. You have to find it & it should be in "My documents" if u already have successfully transferred it from your old computer. If not, then its lost. Thats the one thing I really hate about it.

  • I have: (a) a Macbook Pro, (b) a Macbook, and (c) a brand-new 2TB external hard drive.  How many partitions should I make on my external hard drive?

I want to back up both of the laptops, but I'm wondering if it would be a waste of the 2TB to just assign 1TB to each Time Machine backup.  How much space does Time Machine use?  Should I make a third partition for miscellaneous backups (photos from the camera, etc.)?  If so, how big should it be?
Thanks in advice for your input.

Look at this web site devoted to Time Machine:

  • New iMac: Screen Issues and Noisy Hard Drive

    Hello,
I'm writing regarding my new 27" iMac which I purchased just under a week ago (spec: 3.1GHz Intel Core i5, 1TB HDD, 4GB RAM).
When I got my iMac home and unboxed it, all was fine, however once I had began to install some applications and use them, I noticed an unusual issue with the screen. I had a Skype window open on the left hand side of my screen, with an ongoing chat, Obviously, the chat 'stream' was moving, but the menu items on the far left remained the same. The iMac had been on for about 10mins, with the Skype window open for the same duration. After which, I opened iPhoto, and made it full screen, filling my screen with a dark grey background. I could still see the outline of the text from my Skype window through the iPhoto window. Thinking the window may have been semi-transparent, I closed the Skype window, however when I re-fullscreened iPhoto, the test was still there, as if it was burnt into the screen.
I understand the concept of screen burn, but surely this shouldn't happen after just 10mins? It's nothing permanent, as it fades away again within another 5mins or so, but it is annoying knowing that I can't leave a window open for very long without worrying I will have text burnt into my screen for a period of time. As a graphic designer, I could be working on images that are dark, and likewise, I don't want to see remains of my chat or emails over the top of my design work.
Has anyone else had this issue? Is this an issue that can be repaired by myself (eg. installing a firmware update, although I have all the latest updates from Software Update)? Or should I just return my iMac to the store and get them to look at it? I'm worried that if I take it back, they may fail to see the issue, as the lighing is a lot different in the store to at home.
The other issue I am experiencing is I have a very noisy hard drive, that seems to click and make a grumbling noise rather a lot. Obviously at times when the computer is working hard, this is to be expected (I think), although most of the time it is grumbling away whilst I'm just browsing in Safari with one tab open.
Has anyone else experienced this issue, taken it back and has a successful replacement? I've read that it could be to do with Mac OS X Lion, because people have reported that their hard drive ran silently on Snow Leopard but has got noisier with Lion. Should I wait for a Lion update before returning it? Other than the issues above, everything is fine.
Thanks for taking the time to read this, and I look forward to someone being able to shine some light on my issues.

    Thanks for the advice.
Today, I returned my iMac to the Apple Premium Resellers where I purchased it. The helpful chap there looked at my screen and acknowledged the issue, before giving me a brand new iMac.
My previous model came with Snow Leopard pre-installed, which I upgraded to Lion. This new, second iMac is a relatively new one as it has Lion pre-installed. Feeling hopeful, I've just arrived home and unpackaged my new computer.
The result? EXACTLY the same issue. My Twitter window on the far left of my display has been open for no longer than about 7 or 8 mins, and I can clearly see the display pictures from my follwees burnt into the screen when I full screen a dark app like Snow Leopard.
I'm wondering whether this is a Lion issue? Should I wait for a software update before returning it again? It's not something that's going to be annoying on a day-to-day basis, but now that I know it's doing it, I can't help but keep checking when I open iPhoto.
PEOPLE WITH NEW 27" iMAC's: Would you please perform the following test for me and let me know the results?
    1. Open up a white backgrounded application, such as Twitter, Skype, or Safari.
    2. Leave it on screen (anywhere, but far left seems to be worst) for about 5 to 10mins.
    3. Open up iPhoto with it's grey full screen background, or set your wallpaper to a flat colour dark grey.
    4. Now minimise the white backgrounded windows, and switch to a grey background with no windows in front of it.
    5. Look carefully at your screen: can you still see an outline of/text from the window in the position that it was, like it's burnt into the screen?
Thanks in advance to anyone that can perform this for me.

  • How do I copy the entire contents of my laptops failing hard drive to copy back onto a new computer.

How do I copy the entire contents of my laptops failing hard drive to copy back onto a new computer.

If the drive has failed the only way to get any data off it is to send it to a Data Recovery company. Which is very expensive and no guaranty they will be able to retrieve any data.
That is why Apple has included a system to backup your Mac on a regular basis, Time Machine. Also there are other Apps to do basically the same thing by Cloning your internal drive to an external drive. Carbon Copy Cloner and SuperDuper. Along with using Disk Utility to Image the internal drive to an external drive.
Sorry to tell you but if the drive has really failed your Data is gone unless you pay a large sum of money to one of the Data recovery companies.

  • Clicking noises on brand new laptop.

Hi, I bought a HP Pavilion 15-e 013sa on Monday from Curry's and when home I noticed it was making quiet clicking noises on the left (or middle). I took it back to the shop and was given a new one to pick up today. Got it home and it's making the same noise.
Is this common of this model? It's really getting to me now and I have a horrible feeling when given a replacement it will do the same.
    Thanks.

I've never heard a laptop make this particular noise which is why I am worried.
And yes, hard to check without hearing the noise, it's just a low tapping/clicking that sounds like it's coming from the left but when you turn the laptop it's the middle.
It doesn't sound like a noise a brand new laptop should be making.
Thanks for the reply, I'm going to take it back in tomorrow and get one of their tech guys to check it.

  • My new Macbook Air hard drive gone bad

My new macbook air hard drive just died on me last saturday while I was working on my paper. With that I've lost all my files. I took it to Apple store, but I was told that all they can do is to replace the hard drive for me.
I'm not really happy with the service. You pay so much more to get your money's worth. I was  suggested that if I wanted to retrieve my files I had to take it to an outside source for about $500-$700. It's like buying a defective device that causes you some nasty injury and when you ask for their part of responsibility they tell you to take a hike.
I wish there was a law that would be more protective of people's time and (intellectual) property as opposed to leaving us to the mercy of, ultimately, the greed that drives these companies.

    Fellows,
Please don't read my e-mail with your emotions. I have nothing against Apple other than my disappointment in this particular service that I received. I can make a long list of all the good things that Apple has brought in this world.
My point is this: whether Apple or a PC, when you buy a brand new computer, the manufacturer should not only replace the failed part (in my case it did, as is the norm in the industry), but TRY to retrieve the lost file(s), when is applicable, free of charge, during the warrantee period.
Does it make sense? I find this a very reasonable request/demand. Remember that, according to Apple representative, an outside source was potentially able to retrieve my files.
As a customer, I want to have a better service, especially when I pay more for the promised quality.
If we customers were happy with what is offered/or not, then we would have still worked 70 hours per week, our cars didn't a seatbelt, and ...
I hope this helps to clear my argument.
    Cheers,
I understand where you are coming from, however, there is nothing that they can do.  If the drive has been damaged and does not work, then there isn't anything that they can do.  When those other places charge the prices that they do, it's to pay for them having to physically remove the platters from the drive that you currently had, and keeping every tiny spec of dust off them as a spec of dust could render the platter useless if it gets caught between the heads and the platters.  This being said, they would then have to take those platters and place them in a new drive basically.  Most people understand that there is nothing that can be done when something like this happens, they have external drives and they backup all their data.  I have mine backed up on two seperate drives and in a remote location away from everything here.  Let's put it like this, say you bought a house, and then you put a lot of your memories and things and whatnot into your house, say pictures, papers, things like that.  Now your house burns down, would you expect the people that built your house be responsible and demand that they somehow get your pictures and things like that back from your house that were burned up?  It's kind of asking the same thing that you would get if you were to demand that they somehow magically make your drive start working and get the information off it.

  • New Firewire external hard drive freezes

I have an external USB hard drive, and it works fine if I test it by copying and pasting 10 .jpg files (total ~ 2Meg) to the external USB hard drive from the internal hard drive. I got a new external firewire hard drive and if I try the same test, it freezes mid-copy. (It just sits there forever and I actually have to power down to get it to un-freeze).
It's a brand new Acomdata 250GB firewire external hard drive.
    What could be wrong?
    Thanks!

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
I'd return the drive. Get a drive from
    Otherworld Computing
Granite Digital (they make cases to go around internal drives)
    LaCie
    Cooldrives
These are the only ones I know to reliably work under Mac OS X 10.3 or higher.

  • Noisy Hard Drive IS NORMAL!

I just got back from my local Apple Store, where I exchanged my less than 2 week old 5G iPod because of the clunking/clicking hard drive noise that many people have been noticing.
They had many 5G iPods on display, so I went to each one, loaded up the U2 video, and listened closly to see if I could hear the clicks of the hard drive while it works to load up the video. Guess what? They ALL had the same clicking noisy hard drive, same as the one I had just returned. And also, my new one does the same exact thing.
So there you have it. Guess this is just the normal operation of these new hard drives. Now, the noise I am referring to is the clicking/clunking sound when you load up a video file or a photo album. This sound is completely normal. So, no worries! Enjoy that new iPod!!
    Cheers...Kerry

it's a hard drive. of course its goining to make noise, doesn't your computer make noise when it starts up? Just about every kind of hard drive makes noise, its normal.

  • Brand new laptop: Incredibly slow and laggy.

    Hi,
My mum received a brand new laptop on Saturday (this exact laptop) it hasnt been overly used as yet but the laptop seems very VERY slow. Browsers take a good while to open, sites like Facebook take ages to load - Farmville 2 for example takes an age to load and even when it does its very laggy.
Why is this band new laptop so slow? Nothing has been installed on it other than Firefox and the spec of the laptop seems pretty reasonable. Windows 8 is horrible but thats another issue.
Can anyone help or give any advice?

Do you open farmville from the laptop or from the internet? Have you checked the speed of your LAN or wireless?
Which are you using wireless or LAN NIC?
When you open application on the laptop is it slow?
Trying to determine if it is the connectivity is slow or if it is your laptop.
Also what version of AMD Catalyst are you using?
Here are some things you can do to make sure you are fully updated.
Make sure you have the most current .NET Framework 4.0
Make sure you have the most current DirectX 11.2
Make sure all of the other Microsoft Updates are complete as well. Missing Updates can cause issues.
Uninstall the AMD Catalyst you have now, before installing the Beta version.
I know most are trying to use the AMD Catalyst 13.9, which is used Windows 8 64-bit.
The AMD Catalyst 13.11 Beta9.2 Driver can be downloaded from either of these two links:

Is it a USB hard drive?  USB hard drives have the problem of not giving full speed if they are hooked up on the same bus as keyboards and mice.  Double check your profiler to make sure that is not a problem.  If it is Firewire, make sure there aren't other firewire devices in use at the same time.  I recommend not only keeping a Time Machine backup, but also a clone, and if you do use Time Machine, to make sure the Time Machine drive or partition is at least twice the size of the original drive.

  • Itunes and all my movies have disappeared,i can no longer add to library from my external hdd which ive always used and can only add from the laptops own hard drive, any ideas what the issue could be?

ive recently updated, itunes and all my movies have disappeared,i can no longer add to library from my external hdd which ive always used and can only add from the laptops own hard drive, any ideas what the issue could be?if i transfer the movies from the external to the laptop they will add to the library without any problem so theres no issue with the laptop but when i go to add file in itunes i can path to the external but as soon as i select the file nothing happens, just goes back to itunes

This happens if the file is no longer where iTunes expects to find it. Possible causes are that you or some third party tool has moved, renamed or deleted the file, or that the drive it lives on has had a change of drive letter. It is also possible that iTunes has changed from expecting the files to be in the pre-iTunes 9 layout to post-iTunes 9 layout,or vice-versa, and so is looking in slightly the wrong place.
Select a track with an exclamation mark, use Ctrl-I to get info, then cancel when asked to try to locate the track. Look on the summary tab for the location that iTunes thinks the file should be. Now take a look around your hard drive(s). Hopefully you can locate the track in question. If a section of your library has simply been moved, or a drive letter has changed, it should be possible to reverse the actions.
Alternatively, as long as you can find a location holding the missing files, then you should be able to use my FindTracks script to reconnect them to iTunes .
