BRIDGE IP address on ACE
Hi gyus.
I have a doubt with IP Adresses in BVI interfaces:
Why we need IP addresses? I have configures MAC STICKY on client VLAN.
I need alias in BVI in a HA deploy?
Thanks!
Hi David,
If you will not define an IP address on BVI, ACE won't get enabled and pass traffic. To initiate traffic, such as ARP requests, from the ACE or for management traffic, a bridge group requires an interface with an IP address on the same subnet. From user guide:
A BVI is associated with a corresponding bridge group to routed interfaces within the router but acts as a routed interface that does not support bridging. The BVI is assigned with the number of the associated bridge group. Only one BVI is supported for each bridge group. The MAC address of the BVI is the same as the addresses of the associated bridge-group interfaces. You must enable the BVI and the associated bridge-group interfaces to forward traffic.
You don't need an alias IP in HA deployment since ACE is not the DG of the servers.

Hi All,
I've a quick question about bridged mode in an ACE module.
Is it possible to have the servers on a separate subnet rather than on a directly connected VLAN?
Due to limitations brought on by physical aspects of the setup (and also security policy), I cannot put the ACE right next to the servers. ACE on a stick isn't feasible due to PBR smashing the CPU of the msfc so I'm thinking the ACE needs to be in bridged mode as we have to keep IP address transparency so the servers can perform policy functions based on client IP address.
I've attached a .jpg illustrating the basic setup.
The pertinent question i guess is: Can we use the ACE to loadbalance to servers that are NOT on the bridged VLAN subnet and will also quite possibly be on different subnets themselves?
Any suggestions are very much appreciated.
Thanks All!
BradHi Brad,
As long as there is one to one nat on the firewall it should work just fine.
Even though the servers will be one subnet away but the natted IP will act as local IP for the ACE.
For config reference look at the following link :
http://docwiki.cisco.com/wiki/Basic_Load_Balancing_Using_Bridged_Mode_on_the_Cisco_Application_Control_Engine_Configuration_Example
hope that helps.

How do you determine the IP address of an ethernet bridge?
I've got a US Robotics ethernet bridge connected to a Mac running OS 10.3.9, and I'm trying to access the bridge's web browser interface. (Once I get to that interface, I'll be home free.)
The bridge does not have a default IP address, the connection software on its CD-ROM is PC-only, and USR tech support is baffled. So how can I find out its address?
I've tried looking in System Preferences -> Network, in System Profiler and in Network Utility, but it appears that they only display the computer's address, not the bridge's.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.
iMac G3 Mac OS X (10.3.9)I presume you are taking about the USR5430?
No, it's the USR5432, which unfortunately doesn't have a default IP address (unlike the 5430). The USR site has this to say about connecting to the 5432:
Macintosh and Linux Users
The networking device that the Bridge is connected to probably has some form of Web User Interface where you can view a client list. Refer to your networking device's documentation to determine how to view this information.
When you find the client list, locate the Bridge. You can do this by verifying the LAN MAC address that is on the bottom label of the Bridge and what appears in the client list. Write down the IP address of the Bridge for future reference.
Open a Web browser, type in the IP address of the Bridge, and then press Enter. This will open the Web User Interface of the Bridge.
The bridge only has an IP address when it is in
configuration mode.
That makes sense. And I am in fact trying to locate the bridge's address in order to configure it.
Nevertheless, thank you for the suggestion.

Routing RTSP though Ace but keeping source address information
Hello
I am trying to set up load balancing for a Wowza streaming media server. The problem I have is that some of the media that we will be on the server is not allowed to be watched from other countries. The server has a modification that can sort this based on the IP address, our ACE is in Routed Mode, so the source address is replaced with a internal one which means that they will be allowed to watch whatever they like.
I have tried to look into injecting the original source address in to RTSP but as far as I can see you cant.
Can anyone help with making the connections from other countries readable thought the ACE?Ricardo,
What is this route ??
ip route 0.0.0.0 255.255.255.0 10.0.0.1 (VIP address)
You can't have 0.0.0.0/24.
You must be missing something ?
Also, since the vip is part of a vlan with subnet 10.0.0.0/24 you don't need to add a static route to reach that vip.
It should normally be directly connected to your router.
With the static route, do you see traffic coming to the ACE module ?
Does it loadbalance to the server ?

Route and bridge one mac address
Hello,
I have a particular problem: on a router with one in and one out interface, i want to route all traffic, but i want to bridge one specific well-known MAC address. I wonder if this is possible. On a cisco router, I can do IRB, but each interface is either routed or bridged, but not mixed.
I am sure it will work if i put a switch before and after the router and connect the router with double interfaces: 2 inbound and 2 outbound. Then route on one pair of interfaces and on the second pair of interfaces, bridge the interfaces with a bridge MAC address filter. However, i wonder if it can be done on less interfaces (2 or 3)....
regards,
GeertHello Geert,
Maybe bridging sub-interfaces? Might work, i have not tried myself to be honest and am no expert in bridging with router interfaces. I think config would look something like this...
conf t
bridge irb
interface e0/0.100
encapsulation dot1q 100 native
bridge-group 100
interface e0/1.100
encapsulation dot1q 100 native
bridge-group 100
exit
bridge 100 protocol ieee
bridge 100 bridge ip
bridge 100 route ip
bridge 100 address H.H.H [Where H.H.H is mac address you want to bridge]

ACE Bridge-mode: How to do FT?
Dear All,
I've set up a test user context in Bridge mode on an ACE blade and now want to set up FT to a second blade. The manuals have confused me slightly and most of the examples I have seen relate to routed mode.
In my topology I have Router1 connected to Router2 which has the ACE blade. Router1 is also connected to Router3 which is in turn connected to Router4 which contains a second ACE blade.
Do I create an identical configuration for the context on the second blade and how to I define the FT vlan?
The current configuration and toplogy are attached. Any pointers would be much appreciated.
Thank you
CathyGilles,

I can ping my PC from the standby blade, but a traceroute to the VIP for the webservers still shows it going to the router housing the primary ACE blade even though the context on the standby blade is active.

All physical interfaces on ACE 4710 share the same MAC address. Also, VIP addresses share the same MAC address. ACE 4710 is connected to a switch. How is the switch supposed to know which interface to send the packet to if it is doing layer2 switching.
Thank you in advance for the explanation. You can't put 2 interfaces in the same vlan
switch/Admin(config-if)# switchport access vlan 20
vlan 20 is associated with GigabitEthernet 1/3.
switch/Admin(config-if)#
So, the L2 switch will have an entry for the mac-address in each vlan and this entry can point to different interfaces.

ACE - Validate multiple addresses per record
Is there a way to validate more than 1 address in a single record. For instance:
A customer has mailing address and a separate property address and I want to validate both addresses. How would I set this up in the DEF file?Greetings Ben,
Currently there is not a way to process (standardize and correct) multiple addresses in one record. ACE currently allows you to provide up to 2 input addresses such as:
Bill Smith
100 Main St Apt 5
PO Box 100
La Crosse WI 54601
However you have to tell ACE which address you want to standardize and correct. There is a setting called Dual Address in the Standardization Style block, where you specify what you want the output based on ( Mailing, Street, or Position).
Currenlty there is not a way to process multiple addresses through ACE and get all output addresses standardized and corrected. However, if your data is consistant or in discrete fields, you may be able to accomplish this by running the job more than once through ACE and modifying your def file.
If you would like to discuss this concept further, please log an incident at service.sap.com (component BOJ-EIM-COR) and an ACE team member or I can explain this scenario in more detail.

I configured ACE30-MOD-K9 in bridge mode and I configured a server farm with his real servers. The traffic passes and is balanced correctly between all RSERVER. But I can not contact a server that is on the same vlan of the serverpharm but doesn't belong at this serverfarm.
I Thought that the traffic directed to this "spare" server shouldn't be balanced but the bridge should permit traffic to pass. (trasperent mode) Is it correct ?
What does ACE in bridge mode with traffic directed to servers that do not belong to any server farm but are present on the same VLAN (same bridge group)?

FrancescoHi Francesco,
Just to add more a bit, A bridge group is very similar to routed mode except ACE cannot NAT pass through traffic, vlan's cannot be shared and couple of other things but client's should be able to access the server as in before.
But also whether in bridge or routed mode, ACE does create flows and applies other security parameters if configured to the traffic. This is for security. Also, ACE should know the MAC of the device to forward the traffic to. Can you check if ACE has the MAC of the destination? You can also put a route for testing purpose and see if that resolves the issue. That should probably be the quickest way to check if ACE is creating any issue here.

Hi,
my question is about design.
At the left side, the server and the ACE vlan interfaces are directly connected to
the same vlan. VIP traffic flow is green, server management is brown.
The problem is, that with this design i'm restricted to one server vlan per context,
because the server gateway is the ACE and the ACE-gateway is the server-vlan-interface
at the core.
When the VIP is used, traffic flow is:
1) World is routed to the VIP-VLAN Interface on the core
2) Core sends traffic to the VIP
3) ACE sends traffic to the server through server-vlan-interface
4) server sends back to the ACE
5) ACE sends back to core through the VIP VLAN
6) core sends traffic to worl, everything is fine
Now our server admins want to administrate from different locations:
w/o adding host routes to the core:
1) Admin tries to connect to the server
2) World is routed to the Server-VLAN Interface on the core
3) Core sends traffic to the server
4) server send traffic to default-gw (ACE)
5) ACE drops traffic due to seeing traffic in only one direction, saying no matching session
Todo: Add host route into core to force the traffic to use the ace for
every single server.
with adding host routes to the core:
1) Admin tries to connect to the server
2) World is routed to the Server-VLAN Interface on the core
3) Core sends traffic to the ACE server-VLAN-interface, due to host route
4) ACE sending to the server
4) server send traffic to default-gw (ACE)
5) ACE to core via server-vlan-interface (default route), core to world and everything is fine
Now its impossible to add another Server-VLAN interface to the ACE, because the destinations
are all the same (world) and the gateway on the ACE have to be the VLAN routing instance, the core.
So i have a default route to one server-vlan-interface on the core and all traffic passing the ACE uses
this gw. The result is, that the traffic is blocked by our Firewall.
My plan is now to implement a transit-VLAN (shown on the right side of my pic) for making
my job easier (no host routes, no server admin needed (!) to change gateways..... ) and
overcome the different kind of problems.
My question is now:
Is ensured that the ACE will see all it's traffic ?
I think all should be fine, because the traffic path is unique.
Thanks for reading ^^ and for posting some opinions.
regards from germanyIf I understand correctly, the servers would not be directly connected to the ACE anymore.
Their gateway would not be the ACE anymore.
Problem with this is to guarantee that server response to a *world* request goes back to ACE.
Without any specific action/config, this won't happen.
The server will forward its response to its gateway which will send it directly to the outside world, bypassing ACE and creating the same asymetry you're trying to solve.
To solve this, you will need to do source nating on ACE.
But then your servers will lose information about client source ip address (no more stats based on that info).
Unless if you configure header insert and modify the server to read that info in each request.
As you can see this is not quite easy.
You could try bridge mode.
Create another vlan, and bridge it (BVI) with existing server vlan.
Keep the servers in their original vlan and connect the gateway to the new vlan (without changing ip addresses).
ACE will then be in the middle of GW and ACE.

How to Virtual IP configuration in ACE module?
Hi,
I am in the process of configuring load balancing on ACE module but struggling to configure virtual IP address for ACE module.
I'm working on ACE30 module and using software version A5 (1.2). ACE module is in slot of Catalyst 6504 switch.
Can anybody please post the steps/commands to perform this activity? An early response would be appreciated.

Bridge CS6 crashes when I apply metadata
Similar problem to this: http://forums.adobe.com/message/5025995
The problem started suddenly last week. If I try to apply metadata or keywords to an image, Bridge closes. Sometimes I can apply one or two keywords before this happens, but not many and it always closes after applying more than a few keywords. Before this started, I had no problems with Bridge CS6.
Have tried updating graphics card drivers, resetting preferences, rebooting, changing the locatioon of the photos, with no luck.

You can buy the retail disk at online resellers or the Apple Store for $29. It'll be at version 10.6.3 or .4; you can then update to the latest via Software Update to 10.6.8.
In the meantime, you might want to consider to also contact Adobe; ask about the compatibility and if they want to see the report. -
Getting stuck in the first place (ACE)
Hi ,
I have a quick question :
we have an ACE loadbalancer that is using a least load predictor based on CPU values of 2 rservers :
We only ever have 4 source addresses that connect inbound to the VIP.
We are seeing that the sticky database keeps sticking 3 entries to one of the servers and 1 on the other, so the Load balancer is struggling to keep the load even.. (after they are stuck)
My question is whats is the decision based on to stick the initial connections coming inbound ??? I assume that it uses the least loaded predictor ??hi sivaksiv,
Thanks for the reply...
I wonder if you can help on the following output.... I see that there are actually 5 sticky sessions (but only 4 possible IP source addresses) the ACE from time to time ages one of these out but only to box v04 ????
you can see below that no new connections are being sent to sticky entry - 168105287

Just moved over from IE. On 10.0.2 on W7 One feature I found useful in IE, was that I could enable a 'favotites bar' which mean the most frequently used links were 'nailed up' at top of browser. Can't seem to get that in Firefox 10 I can enable 'Most
