Broadband Use increase since upgrade to Youview

I recently upgraded from BT Vision to BT Youview, on an option 1 broadband package, and have noticed my broadband useage is more in the last 10 days, than it has been over the last 2 months.
It looks as though I will exceed my 10G allowance this month, which I have never done before....normally I only use about 4G as I only download through my Vision/Youview box, not through my computer.
Has anyone else experience this problem when upgrading to Youview?

Some YouView use appears erroneously against your BB limit but should be fixed. It won't appear on your bill

Why have file sizes in Pages increased since upgrading to latest version?

Hi, I use Pages to compose a monthly newsletter for my yacht club. For that purpose I preferred it to Word because it was so easy to add, resize and position photographs. Before circulating the newsletter to club members, I convert the file to PDF format using the print as PDF option. Last year I was able to put 25 or so photos along with text over 5 pages and finish with a file size of less than 5 MB, which is about as big as I can send without dozens being bounced by members' email filters. Since upgrading my Mac to "Mountain Lion" (and then to "Mavericks") and upgrading Pages, I can't include more than 7 or 8 photos on 2 pages without going over my 5 MB limit. The finished file size seems to be two or three times the combined file sizes of the photos that I include.
Any suggestions for reducing file size? I already use as low a photo resolution as I can.

Peter - thank you so much for this very helpful reply. I had assumed that having "upgraded" I would be condemned to putting up with the Pages 5. I would never have thought of looking in the iWork folder for an older version. Needless to say I can't use Pages 09 to open documents written in pages 5 - but that's no loss. I note that January's newsletter was a hefty 15.5 MB in size, whereas December's, which contains more pages and many more photos was only 2.5 MB.

Broadband stopping intermittently since upgrade to...

I was advised by BT to pay for the main incoming socket to be moved into my office due to previous problems with Broadband. My computer is now attached to main socket via a (new) filter and I do not have a router or wireless connection. The line is on about 18 hours a day, and in use most of that time. The line speed is fairly consistently around 5Mbps. At the end of March the local exchange was upgraded and my problems started.
The Broadband line seems to keep 'freezing' - I have to disconnect and reconnect for emails to download and web pages to load. I was warned that this would happen for about ten days after the local exchange upgrade but it doesn't seems to have improved and I'm now getting very frustrated by it because it is over three times that long since the upgrade and this did not happen before. In addition the line speed has not improved at all following the upgrade.
Is anyone else having these problems? Is there any way to improve matters?

You said that you had your master socket moved to your office, is that the only socket in the premises and do you have anything else (e.g. phones or sky boxes) plugged into the line anywhere. You need to be fairly certain that it is not something connected to the line in your premises that is causing the problem as that is not BT's responsibility. If it is the BT router or the line from the master socket to the exchange then you have good grounds to expect BT to improve matters.
Do you have a HomeHub, if so what type is it, what does it look like ?
You can connect to your Hub/Router and view the broadband line statistics and post them back here and get more advice.
There is usually a lot of help available on theses forums so stick with it.

Freezing during use ever since upgrade to Lion

My Macbook doesn't freeze on login. It doesn't freeze after waking up from sleep.
It works fine and then after a bit of use - it freezes.
I can detect no consistent pattern to the freezes.
I have gone to NEVER having to reboot (or whatever the mac equivalent is) to having to reboot about 6 times a day. It is like I am back on a PC
I have the same amount of apps open that I did when I was on Snow Leopard and it never froze.
Did I say Never? I meant never, ever, ever to infinity, never froze.
Now it freezes quite often. Love my MAC!!! Not loving the freezes ever since the Lion upgrade.
Apparently freezing is happening quite a bit to other upgraded Macs. Don't know what the deal is but PLEASE FIX THIS APPLE!!!!

Please be more specific.   "Freeze" means different things to different people.
Please compare your experience to mine, observed in 10.7.x on a quad-core iMac:   I'm doing "ordinary" stuff and all of a sudden the entire display --actually the main display and on an attached monitor-- freezes... stays exactly as it was some instant before. The mouse pointer cannot be moved by any means, including plugging in a new mouse. There's nothing to do but shut down and reboot. Reboot always succeeds, everything is normal -- until the next time. Which is usually several weeks away, but in one case, the next day.
Under the technical hood, the system is unresponsive on the LAN, doesn't even respond to a ping. And afterwards, I've found no trace of these incidents in the Console log --as would occur with ordinary kernel panic and many other failures, I guess. These are all situations in which the Mac system realizes it can't continue and tries to sign-off as gracefully as possible, more-or-less "softly" crashing.   Note: as far as I can recall this iMac has kernel-panicked exactly once since I bought it.
I've started keeping a log of these hard crashes. The last two occurred while I was browsing in Firefix.   If this pattern repeats, I'll definitely want to look into that. But for technical reasons it seems very, very unlikely that an application program can hard-crash a Mac.
Other than a Firefox problem my mostly superstitious suspicion is that I should have bought the highest-price RAM upgrade rather than the medium-priced set I added after installing 10.7 <grin> Memory failure would explain the problem, I think.

Problems using links since upgrade???

I have a porfolio page with 52 images which are 165px x 165px. They all link to different pages. Since the upgrade I decided to make some changes to the order. When I try to change the links using the hyperlink box at the top of the window it appears correct when I first change it but after a few more changes i go back and it has changed to a completely different link. Many of the images share the same link whereas they should all be independent? It seems like after I make about 5 changes they previous link changes get corrupted? please advise?

Cannot Access Disks on Time Capsule Since Upgrading to Mavericks

Hey folks...
So I've had this set up for several years, and it's worked out well. I have a time capsule with an external (self-powered) harddrive connected to it via USB. I usually access it via ethernet as the connection is more speedy than wifi, and my laptop generally remains stationary. For what it's worth, I'm using a Macbook Pro (mid-2010), with the original time capsule (500gb) as well as a connected Western Digital (1tb) external harddrive.
Since upgrading to Mavericks, however, I have not been able to consistently access the remote disks, either by wifi or ethernet connection. The time capsule shows up under my "shared" section of the finder window, but the drives (which are usually visible and accessible from within the time capsule) are not there. Strange enough, when I go into my Airport Utility for Time Capsule preferences, the disks are visible under the "disks" section.
The time capsules' firmware is up to date, as well as the laptop's. I have tried reseting the time capsule as well as my computer in addition to simply unplugging/plugging it back in. I was able to access the disks on a fluke once in the last few days, but after moving the computer away from it's standard spot, the disks are once again no longer accessible.
I had Server 2.0 but am unable to use it since upgrading the OS and haven't purchased Server 3.0. Any suggestions for solutions? Could residule configurations having to do with the Server functionality be affecting it? I'm guessing it is something to do with Mavericks. Thanks for any help or feedback.

I don't have a guaranteed solution to your problem, just some suggestions:
1) Try powering down the Time Capsule for at least 15 minutes, then plug it in again and see if it works better.
2) If you suspect that heat might be a problem, try raising the Time Capsule to give better air flow below it. I have mine on an inverted plastic-coated-wire basket of the type used to organize kitchen drawers.
3) If AirPort Utility can "see" the Time Capsule, you should be able to use the "archive" function (in the Disks panel, Disks tab) to write the disk's contents to a drive connected to the Time Capsule's USB port.
4) In the worst case, you should be able to access the files on the Time Capsule's disk by opening up the Time Capsule, removing the disk drive, mounting the drive in an external enclosure, and attaching the enclosure to your Mac.

Unfortunately, i experienced some thing really unprofessional and different this time.
It begun suddenly one day when i tried to charge my phone, the phone was on silent mode and as usual the phone vibrated when i kept it for charge.
After a few seconds the phone vibrated twice or thrice again when i re-inserted the cable thinking it might be loose.
It continued to charge well when i left the room for 2 hours and finally when i returned i could see a damaged i phone 5
lying on the floor and the phone vibrating continuously and i figured out there was a fault with the cable and the
current wasnt flowing continuously due to which the phone continued to vibrate and fell off the shelf.
Next day i took the iphone to Apple service centre at Saket which was closed.
Thinking its August 15 and so the store might be closed i went back to home and waited for the next day but unfortunately could not turn up since
i had to go to work on odd timings.
I again went to the same service centre on 17th August 2013 and saw the service centre closed again when i tried to contact
the other service centre and was informed about Saket's service centre already been shut down.
There was no hoarding/ banner any kind of intimation for the customers.
Since 18th August was Sunday and i was occupied on 19th August i went to service centre at Ansal Plaza Khel Gaon Marg on
20th August 2013 to complaint about the Faulty Cable and the damaged caused to my iphone 5 due to the same.
I very well explained the same to one of the person at the receiving desk at the service centre who accepted the cable
but explained me that he doesnt have the authority to accept my iphone without permission from the technical support people
who will be able to help me in that case and gave me the toll free number.
i Tried to reach the toll free number and finally managed to get online with a technical support executives who too all my details and
summary of the problem i experienced and finally kept me on hold for almost 10 minutes ormore after which he said he said that my
case cannot be considered and while the discussion was on, the call was disconnected and i was left frustrated as i still was at the service centre
but finally i left with no hope from Apple .
I tried to reach again at the toll free number, and finally managed to talk to a well behaved person who assured me of considering my case and suggested
me to go back to the service centre and advice the the person at the recieving end there to get me connected to the technical support team when i reach so that i could
submit my phone but, since, it was already around 4:30 and the service centre was about to shut and due to traffic
conditions all around i thought of visiting the service centre next day.
On 21st August 2013, i went back to the service centre and spoke to the one of the store person who adviced the case to the manager Mr. Alok ( as i remember )
who was really rude to tell me that i will have to call the technical support team on my own and then he will connect and that its not his work and all that .
I finally connected to one of the senior technical support executives Mr.Mohamed Azharuddin K who understood my concern and spoke to the manager of the store to accept
my iphone.
My iphone was finally collected and i was assured i would get a call back next day from the service centre about the update.
It was now 22nd August 2013, no update was given,no call was received, i tried to call the service centre at 12:30, they were unaware about my case and knew only about the cable and said will call me
back very shortly.
I called back at 2:30, still no update, at 4:30 i called back again when i was told that my case cannot be considered and i can collect my phone.
Similar discussion was held with Mr.Mohamed Azharuddin K.
I knew by the time i will reach the service centre would again close.
He told me that my case cannot be considered since the cable was recieved in the dead condition and wasnt working at all unlike what i told him about the cable.
On 23th August 2013, i went back to the service centre and collected my phone. When i asked about my old cable and told them that it was working and i wanted the technician
to check it properly when i handed it over, they had no answer but to say its already shipped. I spoke to the manager who said that he never told any body that the cable
was received in dead condition and he only conveyed to other authorities that the cable had fault .
I finally dont know what to do and came back with the new cable.
I just visited my time, petrol and parking charges in getting the cable replaced.
If i calculated i have spent around 16 hours and 2000 worth of money in just getting the cable replaced and have a broken phone in hand.
More than a weeks torture.
Is that the way apple compensates for its fault ????????????????
I will make sure that i never buy any thing from Apple and advice all the people i know to not trust Apple blindly.

Since upgrading to 4.0 and now 5.0 tabs do not have tab close buttons and I must use CNTL-W to close open tabs, what's the problem?

Since upgrading to Firefox 4.0 the close tab button, usually in the upper right corner of the tab has been missing. I have just recently upgraded automatically to 5.0 and the tab close 'X' button is still missing from all open tabs. The only way to close a tab is to click on it and use CNTL-W to close out the tab.

Start Firefox in <u>[[Safe Mode]]</u> to check if one of the extensions is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox (Tools) > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).
* Don't make any changes on the Safe mode start window.

If it does work in Safe-mode then disable all extensions and then try to find which is causing it by enabling one at a time until the problem reappears.

Not using any mouse pad, I have a very smooth desktop. But I just tried to use a sheet of A4 printing paper, but no result, the problem persisted.
Someone on this forum suggested, that USB3 may interfere with the magic mouse.
I have 2 LaCie HDD's about 70 cm away from the mouse, I use them on Thunderbolt. But in operation or not - the result is the same, the mouse plays up! Just now I was clicking the desktop and the mouse created a new folder!!

Exactly how are you trying to open them (what menu command or button or mouse action or keyboard shortcut)?

I found some instructions about Internet Sharing, in System Prefs, etc. "From: Ethernet, To: Airport" Enable Internet Sharing, and all...She did everything, by the book (or so, she thinks) but nothing shows on her Iphone Wi-Fi Settings when she tries to connect... I also read that it could be done with a Bluetooth PAN, but I got lost, as I tried to follow the instructions here at home, after pairing computer and Phone, with a "rude" message appearing on my phone telling me to "forget that device".
