Broadcom BCM4331 drivers - b43 can't scan, wl won't install

I have a Macbook Pro 9,2 with a Broadcom BCM4331 wireless card. I've had issues with the wireless card ever since switching to Arch a bit over a year ago, and I'm trying to fix them once-and-for-all, but I'm not having much luck. Right now, if I use the b43 driver, sudo iw dev wlp3s0 scan outputs nothing and I can't connect to any networks, and when I try to install broadcom-wl, yaourt complains that the package would conflict with what seems to be pieces of a broadcom-wl installation already on my system.
To give a brief history of this issue, I installed the b43 drivers initially when I started using Arch over a year ago, because my card was listed as compatible with them. Sometimes I wouldn't be able to connect to any networks and iw scan gave blank output. It would remain like this for a few days and then suddenly start working again. It got worse and worse until eventually I could almost never use the card.
I posted about it here and someone suggested using broadcom-wl instead, which I tried. It worked at first but before long it began to cause my speakers to emit a loud "click" sound for each packet the card sent out. It was unaffected by muting my system sound and made listening to music, watching videos, etc. more or less impossible.
I quickly got sick of this and switched back to b43, and that's more or less where I've been for the past few months. At first, it was working on and off, but for the past few weeks it hasn't worked at all.
After bringing up the interface, the output from sudo iw dev wlp3s0 scan is blank. Trying to connect via wpa_supplicant has similar issues; it also outputs nothing in its scan results, and trying to connect to my home wi-fi network causes it to scan for networks continuously without finding anything.
Here's some output from dmesg. This is after having no modules for the card loaded, then loading b43 with sudo modprobe b43, then trying to use the card:

Your current b43 issue may be an instance of this bug. It looks like the fix for that one made it into 3.15.5, so I'd say first see if updating improves the situation.
As for the conflicting file errors from pacman, you can use "pacman -Qo <filename>" to see if another package owns the files. Assuming not, you can probably safely delete them. The rest of the files you found belong to other packages and won't affect broadcom-wl; if they were going to be problematic, pacman would have complained about them along with the other two.

  • I can print to HP Officejet Pro 8500 - A909g but I can't scan. Won't recognize?

    I have HP Officejet Pro 8500 Wireless All-in-One Printer - A909g and a Lenovo T410 lap top.  I can print but my computer doesn't recognize my my 8500 to scan?  I have uninstall and reinstalled the software and still nothing!  I have checked with my wireless network Linksys and everything checks out.  They tell me that the problem is with my HP 8500.  I have hardwired to the printer and it scans okay.  What must I do to wirelessly scan?
    Thank you,  John

    I had the same problems as reported in previous posts.  I reinstalled my entire system and upgraded to Windows 7, 64 bit, Ultimate.  Only the priint driver would install from the Full Feature Drivers option at HP Support.
    Uninstall/install print driver to no avail.
     Turn printer/router/computer off/on.
    Download full feature drivers from HP website. (Only print driver was downloaded.)
    HP diagnostic utilities did not discover a problem.
    I believe the problem had to do with the drivers accessed via the  HP Support site.  I downloaded from the following location:  http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?cc=us&lc=en&docname=c02073861&jumpid=ex_r4155/hho/ipg/cc...
    Ran the Install Wizard from there and the printer/fax/scan tests.  Passed all.  All drivers are now installed as is the HP Solution Center.
    Glad to finally be up and running!!!!

  • Missing drivers and can't figure out what to install

    I have two missing drivers on a fresh install of windows 7 64 bit and can't seem to work out what they are. It's a HP notebook 2000 365DX They show up under 'Other Devices' one is BCM207020A and when I open it the info says Location Port_#0002.Hub_#0003 the second is PCI Device and when opened it is PCI bus 2, device 0, function 0 Anyone got an idea?

    Hi: You need these drivers... This package contains the Broadcom bluetooth driver and software for supported notebook models that are running a supported operating system. Broadcom Bluetooth 4.0 Driver is required to enable Broadcom bluetooth 4.0 devices and is compatible with Broadcom bluetooth 3.0 and earlier versions. File name: sp54245.exe This package contains the driver that enables the Realtek Card Reader in supported notebook models that are running a supported operating system. The card reader enables users to read from or write to supported removable storage cards, which are typically used in digital cameras, digital music players, and cellular phones. File name: sp52186.exe

  • Officejet Pro 8500 A909G Can't Scan to Network Folder - Install won't detect Printer

    I have installed an 8500 on a wireless network.  There are 2 PC's;  1 is XP Home, the other is XP Pro, both are Service Pack 3.  The Router is a Linksys WRT54G2, Wireless adapters in both PC's are Linksys Wireless G - PCI cards.  Both PC's are running McAfee Total Protection software and they are up to date.  Windows Firewall is off.  I'm using a 9 char SSID (all alpha), it isn't hidden and I'm not using MAC filtering.  Security is WPA2 using a pass-phrase.  I have added SLP service on Port 427 in McAfee on both PC's for UDP and TCP.  (I've also opened up 135-139 and 445 for File sharing.)  All devices configure using DHCP.  The printer was turned on first and gets 192.168.1.100, XP Home gets ...101 and XP Pro gets ...102.  Signal strength for both PC's is Excellent and the LAN runs at 54.0 mps.  (I can't think of anything more to describe how everything is setup.  If anyone needs something else, just ask for specifics.)  Now the PROBLEM:
    During installation: 1) XP Home discovers the printer just fine, all is happy and all works as advertised. 2) XP Pro doesn't see the printer when searching for printer (not recieving SLP Packets?), I have to go to advanced and search by IP Address.  There is some point after this that I receive an error saying I need to check port 427 etc.  I check continue installing wireless and ignore errors.  When install is done XP Pro CAN print.  I CAN run HP Solutions Center and scan.  I CAN'T go to the printer and press the scan button and "Scan to a Network Folder", I CAN'T setup this function for the XP Pro machine using ESS.  I CAN access EWS from either PC (that uses port 80).  I have tried turning off the McAfee firewall to no avail (of course McAfee doesn't exactly turn off completely - I have read in some other forums).  I'm not sure what to do next and I'm spending WAY too much time on this install (this is a customer of mine).  I was about to tell them I can't turn on this one option - then I tried to turn on file-sharing and found it doesn't work either!  I could point the finger at McAfee because it sounds like their kind of problem, however, both versions are identical, and both have been setup the same.  The only real difference is XP - Home vs Pro.  If anyopne has seen this kind of problem on an XP Pro box please let me know.  I'm now just scratching my head with no other options.

    I have a customer with the EXACT same problem.  I HONESTLY thing that HP has a driver/firmware problem here.
    Three different computers, A desktop, a laptop and a Netbook (sounds like a joke...)  NONE will allow Scan to Print.  I have installed/uninstalled around 9 times now - HP sent the customer a NEW printer in December - still no workee.  Spent 5 hours on phone with tech support - NO WORKEEE...
    Here is the maddening part - the SCAN TO E-MAIL works PERFECTLY!!!!!!!!   ALL other functions work Perfectly - but Scan to File just fails stating that it can't find the computer.
    I can ping the Printer, I have disabled ALL anti-virus, firewall software, scanned with Malwarebytes, TrendMicro Housecall, Eset NOD32, and Kapersky scanners with negative (good) results for bugs...
    I'm just happy that SOMEONE else is having the problem... (so that I know that I'M not COMPLETELY crazy....)  (The scene in OFFICE SPACE keeps playing through my head, the one where they take the fax machine and play baseball with it...)
    Help!!!!

    The scan function wasn't working.  I tried to uninstall/reinstall it.  Plugging in the USB did not bring up the installer, so I went to the support site to do it.  Ran the smart installer, got to the last step and then it gave me a message to the effect of: Installation took to long. This is a fatal error. Try again.
    I have tried multiple times. Thanks for any help.

    Hi @edgar45 ,
    I read your post and see that you are unable to install the printer software. I would really like to be able to help you resolve this issue.
    Disconnect the USB cable.
    Perform a clean boot on the computer and turn off the Antivirus Software. How to perform a clean boot in Windows.
    Then run the installation, immediately after connecting the USB cable, follow the steps in this document to update the drivers so it doesn't error out again. A Fatal Error Displays During Software Installation. Then the installation should continue.
    If there is anything else I can help you with, just let me know.

  • Can download iTunes, but won't install

    I get the following error in the iTunes + QuickTime box:
    The Windows Installer Service could not be accessed. This can occur if you are running Windows in safe mode, or if the Windows Installer is not correctly installed. Contact your support personnel for assistance.
    I've read so many articles and have been trying to fix this problem for months now. Please help.

    Why won't it install?  Are there any errors?

    Also, hopefully the media on the computer and other important data was backed up.  Reinstalling iTunes does not cause that content to magically re-appear.

  • Canon MF4890 Drivers Won't Install On Mac Running Mavericks

    I just purchased an MF4890.  I use a Macbook Pro running Mavericks.  The disk that came with the printer doesn't support Mavericks and when I download the drivers from the Canon website, they won't install.  If I keep the driver image on my Mac desktop, the printer will print for a time -- but then it no longer sees the printer.  This isn't normal.  I should be able to eject the disk image (as in every other application), and the app/drivers should be installed on my mac.  When I as much as created a folder on my desktop and moved the disk images into the folder (print/fax/scan), the mac no longer sees the printer (wireless).
    Help!  Does this printer support Mavericks?

    Hi BonnieBoop.
    The imageCLASS MF4890dw does support printing on the OS X Mavericks operating system.  You should be able to open on the Mac_MF_Ver1010_00.dmg file and run the installer package.  The icon looks like an open brown box.  Next just follow the steps to install the driver.
    If you are not able to see this information or if the setup does not allow you to save the information, we recommend that you contact us at 1-800-OK-CANON (1-800-652-2666) and a live technical support representative will be glad to assist you.

  • I can't scan over wireless with my laserjet 100 color mfp m175mw - Windows 7

    HP Scan software doesn't boot up and work unless printer is hooked to pc via usb.  Can't seem to scan wirelessly.  Normal?

    Hi @juancgallardo ,
    I see that you are experiencing issues scanning over the wireless network and hardwired network on Yosemite.
    I would like to help you out with this issue today.
    The drivers for Yosemite are installed by the Apple Updates.
    Installing Your HP Printer Driver and Software for Mac OS X.
    Did you add the printer as a Bonjour printer or IP Protocal?
    IP Protocal won't allow you to scan, just print.
    You can also download and install the HP Printer Drivers v3.0 for OS X.
    If you are still having issues then check that the scanning ports on the router to make sure that they are open. You can contact the router company to check and open these ports 9220/9500/427 on the router.
    If you still can't scan, connect the printer directly to the Mac with a USB cable and see if you can scan. Just to rule out a network issue.
    What kind of router do you have?
    Please provide in detail the results if you are still having issues.
    Have a nice day!

  • Can't Scan from my HP Color Laserjet 2840 on my iMac.

    It appears that OS X 10.6.4 only allows the print function, not the scan or fax function. I have VMware Fusion with Windows XP Professional loaded, but I can't get the install disk to load. I can upload the print drivers, but not the scanning functions. Any ideas?

    I have the same problem and it sure is very annoying. I called HP and AppleCare for this but it seems that there is nothing that can be done until HP releases updated drivers for CLJ 2840 and Mac os 10.6.x... ;-(

  • Can't scan from Lexmark multifunction printer - firewall issue?

    Hi there!
    I got a Lexmark printer/scanner combo which used to work fine on my arch install. However, its mobo died, so now I'm back at another install which refuses to scan. Scanning is done through the browser via a java applet residing on the printer's webserver. The applet does start (so it's not a java issue), but refuses to receive data from the scanner. Within the printer's web interface, it reads
    If using Windows XP, the Windows XP personal firewall must be disabled before using Scan to PC profiles.
    , so I'm assuming it might be a firewall issue. Lexmark's website provides the following advice:
    The following two command lines will open the port 5353 for incoming and outgoing connections:
    iptables -I INPUT -p udp -m udp --sport 5353 -j ACCEPT
    iptables -I OUTPUT -p udp -m udp --dport 5353 -j ACCEPT
    NOTE: These steps will work on most distributions configured with IPTABLES. There is no common command to make these rules persistent.
    As I don't know anything about IP tables, I've simply copied these commands (as root, obviously). Still, I can't scan.
    So, my questions are:
    1. Has anybody else ever come across an issue like this?
    2. I don't even know for sure, whether this is a firewall issue - What iptabled magic would I need to temporarily disable the firewall to check?
    3. I tried checking my rules by "iptables -L". How can I tell "iptables -L" to specify the ports it is working on (as I did in the commands copied from lexmark's website)?
    Best wishes,
    Rufus

    Hi Bob
    I believe so.  We put the install disc into this mac back when we bought it to set up the printer.  I'm assuming the scanning drivers were there as well since it's a multifunctional printer/scanner/fax wireless printer.
    We've tried it both ways.  If I press the button scan on the printer, it reads can't find computer (or something like that).  When we go thru the HP icon on my computer screen and choose scan to computer, it does nothing.
    We don't scan that often.  So the few times when we ran into this problem, we just did something else (like take a pic from our iPhone and email the pic...kinda stupid but did the trick.
    But I want to have the function of the scanner available.  So that's why I'm here asking...thought others had this issue and had a solution.

  • Can't scan from brand-new HP PSC 1600 all-in-one printer/scanner/copier

    Just installed this new all-in-one, and the printer and copier work perfectly. But when I try to scan, it won't do anything. Error message says to configure a "scan destination." But the menu to do so, on the desktop, won't open at all. Just stalls and stalls. Everything else seems to work fine, so no connection problems. Anybody know how to shake this menu loose?

    I've been using the HP psc 1210v for about a year now, and I've always been able to print, but scanning (which I do very infrequently) has always been a problem. Typically, to use the scanner, I have to remove the printer and re-install with the latest drivers from HP's (currently 7.7.2).
    So, after doing this again, I was able to scan a couple of images by using the "HP Device Manager". I just double-click on "Scan Picture", which opens the "HP Scan" application, and I can choose from there how to scan; either opening in another Application or Save to File.
    I'm using 10.4.6, but I know I originally scanned some images using this printer in 10.3.9. Hopefully this will continue to work!

  • Can't scan over network with a laserjet 1217 on a Mac

    Hi
    My set up:
    Mac with Yosemite
    Laserjet M1217 over wireless
    Problem description:
    I can't scan. From preview, or the control panel, or image capture, I get the same error saying "can't open a session"
    I have installed and re-installed the drivers/printer around 100 times.
    I have tried adding the printer/scanner as airprint, or with the name of the printer as a post suggested.
    Everything result in the same error.
    I have version 2.0 of the driver installed right now. Tried with 1.7 as well, same result.
    I can print without a problem from my Mac and from my iPad.
    Tried with an ethernet cable and have teh same issue in case someone ask.
    I've looked everywhere in google and doesn't seem like anyone else have the same issue? Many people have issues printing over wireless, but that's ok for me. Is the scanning I can't get to work.
    HP pages doesn't offer any different driver than what Yosemite has. HP doesn't offer any extra program for Mac and scan.
    Don't know what else to try.
    Some help? Anyone?

    Thank You.

  • Can't Scan after new installation

    A bit of background;
    Dell laptop
    Windows 8.1 64bit
    HP Officejet 6500 e709n
    I finally managed to install the full set of printer drivers (HP Solution Center) on this new laptop ....which btw took hours of research,  just to learn that I can't scan.
    I get the an HP popup message saying ERROR Imaging Device Not Found along with a number of steps to reolve the issue....and yes I followed most of the steps listed below except for the unistall/reinstall since this is a new installation.

    Hello G4ME,
    Welcome to the HP Forums!
    I understand you're receiving a message indicating "Imaging Device Not Found" using the Officejet 6500 e709n. I will do my best to assist you!
    How is this printer connected? Wireless or USB?
    Follow this entire HP document on 'The HP imaging device was not found on the network' Message Displays on the Computer (Windows). Please post your results, as I will be looking forward to hearing from you. Have a great night!

  • Can't scan or connect to WPA network since kernel upgrade

    Hi guys,
    I upgraded to kernel 2.6.29 earlier today and have been having trouble with scanning and connecting to WPA encrypted networks since. I'm stuck with a wired connection for the minute, but I can't have the wire going through the house for so long otherwise somebody will trip over it - probably me.
    I usually use netcfg to connect to the network, but since the update that has failed.
    My network called is a Belkin USB Wireless G, model number F5D705ed version 5000ed. It worked perfectly fine on 2.6.28 using the rtl8187 native drivers.
    dmesg output for 2.6.29
    usbcore: registered new interface driver rtl8187
    rtl8187: 8187B chip detected.

    phy0: hwaddr 00:1c:df:47:44:c0, RTL8187BvE V0 + rtl8225z2
    I can start the card up using
    sudo ifconfig wlan0 up
    When I attempt to scan for a wireless network, I get
    sudo iwlist wlan0 scan
    wlan0 No scan results
    The network is WPA, and would scan fine on 2.6.28.
    wpa_supplicant.conf looks like this
    ctrl_interface=DIR=/var/run/wpa_supplicant GROUP=wheel
    eapol_version=1
    ap_scan=1
    fast_reauth=1
    network={
    ssid="Arazmataz"
    psk="*****************"
    priority=5
    I should note though, that since the update - /var/run/wpa_supplicant seems to have disappeared.
    network.d/profile looks like
    CONNECTION="wireless"
    INTERFACE=wlan0
    SCAN="yes"
    SECURITY="wpa"
    ESSID="Arazmataz"
    GATEWAY="192.168.1.1"
    KEY="**************"
    IP="dhcp"
    IWCONFIG="rate 54M"
    TIMEOUT=120
    dhcpcd times out also and netcfg fails to connect. Going back to WEP seems to work ok.

    I've made some progress though - but still can't connect. I can now scan for a network though.
    /etc/conf.d/wireless-regdom
    WIRELESS_REGDOM="GB"
    /var/run/wpa_supplicant still didn't exist, so I created a /var/run/wpa_supplicant folder - and saw a few success messages in the log. This allowed me to bring the card up again and scan for a network.
    At this point, I was getting excited until netcfg2 still kept telling me that it couldn't associate with the network.
    I installed wicd and gave that a go and got the following. I did a 'tail -f /var/log/wicd/wicd.log' and got this;
