BT Infinity 2 upgrade has left me without Internet...

After what was supposed to be a simple upgrade from ADSL to BT Infinity, I have now been without any broadband at for a week and have been subjected to undoubtedly the worst customer service imaginable…. Here goes.
Tuesday 6 June, an engineer arrived at my premises to perform a simple upgrade of my ADSL line to a faster fibre connection. After some time, the engineer claimed that it was all done and promptly left before I had a chance to check. I thought this was strange, but didn’t question him as I assumed there is no way a professional engineer would leave a job without properly signing it off.
How wrong I was, no connection whatsoever! Kicking myself for not insisting that we check before he left, I called him on his mobile, only to be told: “I dunno mate, I’m just the engineer”. Exactly my point, I thought – what an attitude to have! He then said he would call the help desk to find out if there was any reason for the lack of connection, and after some time called back to say that there was a problem in my area and everyone’s broadband was down – it should be back up in a matter of hours. OK, I thought – why would he lie?
A number of hours later – still nothing. So, I called an ‘advisor’. I was told that there was no record of a fault in my area - an outright lie from the engineer, to get rid of me no doubt (it was gone five after all!). The ‘advisor’ told me that the connection would not be live until midnight on the day of install. I thought this to be strange as this was the first I’d heard of this, seemingly crucial, slice of information.
Surely he wouldn’t lie to me as well? I awoke the next morning with high hopes of a working broadband service. Not likely.
Another call to an ‘advisor’ at 6.30am and I was told to expect a call back before midday with a solution. 1pm, still nothing, so I once again I manned the phone. An amazing, and very wasteful, 1 hour and 30 minutes later I had been sent around the proverbial houses, but was still no closer to a solution.
I think I must have been asked to “turn it off and turn it back on again” at least five times. Ever felt like smashing your head into a wall?
I tried to explain time and time again that, rather than treat this as a fault, it would make more sense to simply resend an engineer to complete the job the incompetent one could not… this was like getting blood from a stone. “But Sir, if we can just do a couple more tests”. At this point I had no interest in talking anymore, just send me an engineer.
By the end of the day (Wednesday 7th) I finally got a very reluctant ‘advisor’ to arrange me an engineer for Friday 9th June.
Friday arrives, as does the engineer. A far more competent chap than last time, who spent almost five hours trying to fix the line, but with no joy. I still find it absolutely baffling that this has all arisen from an upgrade.
After a valiant effort, the engineer gave up and said he would report it to the ‘tier 2’ team who would contact me, and he would also call back to confirm this.
Fast forward to Monday 10 June, and still not a peep from either the engineer or the ‘tier 2 team.’ I have no idea what BT think they are doing here, but leaving a customer in ‘limbo’ like this is ridiculous. Both my flatmate and I need an Internet connection for work and have been massively inconvenienced by this whole episode, soured further by BT’s seeming disinterest to get the problem fixed with any kind of haste or professionalism.
I understand there must be huge business benefits from moving call centres overseas, but sometimes it would be nice, particularly after going through all this, to speak to a UK based operator who would deal with my issue subjectively, as opposed to what sounds like reading from a screen - with ‘progress’ limited to whatever boxes one manages to get ‘ticked’. And, it will come as no surprise that as soon as I threated to cancel, I was switched immediately to a UK call centre, who although very helpful and apologetic, did nothing to help and transferred me back to, what I assume is, India. My head and the wall were getting quite friendly at this point.
After nearly a week without any Internet and numerous (very expensive) phone calls, I am at a complete loss as to what to do next, no one seems to be able to help me or offer a logical solution. Perhaps an engineer could come and reconnect my old line… maybe I am just not meant to have a fibre connection.
I do, however, feel that I should be compensated for the stress, hassle and phone bills. Not to mention the 6-days-and-counting that I’ve been without any BT service.  What do you think?

Yet another "victim" of BT's incompetent Indian call centre,
I think more a victim of BT's totally incompetent internal systems; and probably initially of Openreach's outsourcing to installation to companies that often provide untrained and lazy installers.
The mods should get things sorted. at: http://bt.custhelp.com/app/contact_email/c/4951 . But be aware they take 3 working days to reply: sometimes more if busy.  That is pretty poor in your situation.  They have a good record of getting things solved once they are on the case.
Good luck.

  • Exchange upgrade has left me with crippling slow s...

Hi. 1 year of homehub3 speeds usually 3-4 meg. I receive an email telling me of the exciting news of an exchange upgrade. Unfortunately I now have at best 0.5 meg. Call center states I could get up to 20 meg. So far absolutely no change to speed since phone call. Any help appreciated. I pay a lot for this dreadful speed! Cheers Here is home hub summary: ADSL Line Status Connection information Line state: Connected Connection time: 0 day, 08:59:22 Downstream: 576 Kbps Upstream: 1,187 Kbps   ADSL settings VPI/VCI: 0/38 Type: PPPoA Modulation: G.992.5 Annex A Latency type: Fast Noise margin (Down/Up): 37.8 dB / 5.8 dB Line attenuation (Down/Up): 35.0 dB / 16.4 dB Output power (Down/Up): 0.0 dBm / 12.5 dBm FEC Events (Down/Up): 0 / 0 CRC Events (Down/Up): 4 / 80

Hey imjolly. Cheers for the reply. The connection time is low because I have been through the obligatory power cycle procedures and I also disconnected the bellwire etc to try and solve the problem. India CC Rang me back today. When I told them I had seen no improvement he said he would sort it. As you can see I think the numbers look a little more healthy. Just hope the speed stays like this! • Beware of Infinity upgrade from ADSL

I felt I had to pass on my experience of BT's push to migrate its ADSL broadband customers to Infinity. In fact it was my mother-in-law who is the subscriber (I just get called upon to fix IT problems when something goes wrong) and who got the call from BT. She was pushed into upgrading as it was positioned as all positive, more speed, the future is fibre blah blah with the only downside of a £25 one off charge. That said she had no idea after the call if she had actually agreed to a change in the tariff or whether, as I presume, this has locked her in to BT for another 12 months. Bottom line is that the upgrade was entirely inappropriate for her, did not work properly, was worse than what she had before and she has since had to downgrade back to the old service. This has left her without broadband at all for a week and about £45 out of pocket. Plus I had to drive 30 miles round trip to sort it all out for her. Thanks BT. So why was something that you would naturally assume to be fantastic such a bad idea? Well firstly she did not need the improved speed (I don't know what was promised to her on the phone) as she was already getting 14Mbps on ADSL and has one PC which she uses for a bit of email and browsing. If she uses the PC for more than 30 mins a day I would be surprised. She currently has a desktop PC connected by Ethernet cable to her home hub connected to an extension BT phone socket (in a small study). BT Inifinity replaced the master socket (which is in the hall not her study) and then installed an OpenReach modem/router and a conventional BT Home Hub 3 in the hall. As she also has an Ethernet powerline adaptor to allow the TV to connect to the Internet then this not only placed additional equipment on a hall table which she did not want but required three power sockets which she did not have (the powerline adaptor has to go into a real socket and not an extension or multi way adaptor). So this led to an extension cable trailing on the floor in the hall. Plus the £25 for the install. Now as she was using a desktop PC, short of moving that to the hall, she had no connection from PC to home hub. So she was told by the BT engineer to go out and buy a WiFi dongle for her PC. She is 82 and made the trip to the shops in the snow. Another £20. Had my wife or I known we would have stepped in but she is one of those fiercely independent types. Initially that did the trick and it worked. Then I did a speed test for her and found she was getting 3Mbps download and about 5Mbps upload! But at least it was working. But then next day the trouble started as the Internet connetion appeared down. Called BT and a long spell on the phone to the call centre. BT could not explain the line speed issue and put it down to needing to "settle in". The Internet connection to the hub (from the BT network) was fine and turned out it was the wireless connection starting to drop. Then rather than pick up the BT home hub again (a distance of 5m away) it would find a neighbour's BT hub or what appeared as a public access BT WiFI FON access point. She did not realise that she was trying to connect to the wrong hub. Plus anyway she did not want the hassle when she previously had only a wired connection. So at that point she called BT. Another long spell on the phone. But she was able to ask for her service to be downgraded. She was told it would happen the next day. Indeed BT Infinity stopped working the next day. But no BT ADSL broadband service was back. Another long phone call. Now was told that the old service would not be reactivated until the following week (almost one week after the BT Infinity service was cut off). That should happen today. So hopefully today all will be back to normal but it has left her out of pocket, having also spent hours on the phone to BT and required me make an "onsite" visit to move equipment and clear up the mess of boxes and cables in the hall. And for something she did not want or need. I will be telling her to write to BT to complain about this fiasco but I post this here as a warning. Before you migrate make sure it is right for you (or your friends and family). Oh and this is not technophobic fear of all things new - I myself have been using various broadband suppliers including BT for 12 years (dating back to BT Home Highway - 2 x 64kbps ISDN service).

    Hello....
About 7 days ago i posted up in here some quieries about the BT INFINITY UPGRADE and wether i should do it or not co'z of conflicting information from Customer services e.t.c...
Well, Im pleased to report back that my internet speed HAS Increased, But not by Much!..>
Before i was pulling this (wired Connection)
    Now Im Pulling this!..
So, ive Kinda had a upgrade, Not the Magical 75mb/19mb i was Kinda Promised..but hey ho!, a speed upgrade is a speed Upgrade i spose!...
Finally, Above all Else, Its better than my previous supplier could EVER GIVE ME!....
    IN YOUR FACE VIRGIN MEDIA!

Not bad, once everyone has upgraded your speed may stablise. I would also suggest rebooting your modem and router in order early in the morning to see if you pick up a better sync speed/IP Profile and you may get a faster throughput.

It sounds noobish but my friends like to know if they can install Arch Linux without Internet connection ?

The core iso should be all you need, just boot off that to start the installation. It's been a while since I did an install, but somewhere along the way it gives you an option to install off the cd or do a net install. You just need to choose the cd installation.
That being said, all you'll have without internet will be what's on the cd, so you'll be left with a pretty minimal install. If you want to update and install additional software then you'll either need to get the computer temporarily  connected, or download the packages on a different computer and transfer them.
I am looking to do something similar. I have the core system installed on an older laptop, but I cannot get the wireless working (it has no ethernet). I've tried downloading the libgl packagesfrom a mirror to a thumbdrive, but it's a dependency nightmare. Is there a better way to do this?

  • A clean install on my MacBook Pro has left my icons stuck on the right side of the desktop. I want to move them but there is no 'None' option which I think would free them to move where I wish. Suggestions?

A clean install on my MacBook Pro has left me with my icons stuck in the grid on the right side of my desktop. I had the ability to move them and have them stay put in various sectors of the desktop, which I found very useful.  The clean install upgraded the OS to 10.6.8 from 10.5.8. I want to move them again but there I see no 'None' option which I think would free them to move where I wish. Has the upgrade deleted that option? Suggestions? I am new to this community and if not new to Mac, I often feel that way. This is one of those times.

I have the same problem on the latest iTunes software and Windows 7. My window is maximzed and I do not see any tab for photos. Seems related to a recent update (IOS7?) as this was there - at least before the very big change to the interface.

  • Connecting 2 computers thru Time Capsule without Internet?

I had started a question in another area (Mountain Lion) because I am trying desperately to migrate a Windows PC running Windows 7 to a new iMac.  The Migration assistant on both computers does not find any computers.  The Apple Care people say I am doing everything right, but now some people online are saying that I can't do this wirelessly thru Time Capsule (which we have and is the router for our office which the PC is connected to wirelessly).
The new Mac is in set up beginning mode (meaning it has not been set up wirelessly or anything yet), because on launch it offers to move the data from the PC to set up the new Mac.  It is stuck "looking for a computer"
    Here is the whole discussion:
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/23377824#23377824
Today I went by an Apple store to ask their opinion and the guy told me that I can't connect the 2 computers via ethernet (even though that is what the Migration insturctions say to do), but he said that I shoud be able to connect each computer via ethernet to the Time Capsule and have them recognize each other.
Does this sound right to any of you???
The PC is clear across the room and no where near the internet line, so I would either have to buy a REALLY long ethernet cable to drag over to it, or take the whole computer apart to try and get it near the TC.  The mac of course is no problem to move.
I just don't want to do all this if this will not really act as a network (I guess as a server of sorts).
I am confused as the TC manual says that it can be used without internet, but I don't seehow (I've tried rebooting it without a connection).  I do not know why the internet is involved at all since what we need is the TC to act as a wireless router (which it is) and do not need to involve the internet at all to link the 2 computers.
I am just totally frustrated that these computers should just communicate wirelessly and/or with each other somehow and do not seem to, as Apple says they should.  I know this will turn out to be something really simple and dumb and I'm just not seeing it.
Is it not possible to take the TC and reboot it with the 2 computers connected to it and create a network using the TC as a server or router without needing any internet just so I can get this stuff from the PC migrated (and then never have to deal with it again!!!!)
    Any help is greatly appreciated.
    Thanks!

I think where the confusion lies is that this is a brand new Mac and NEVER been set up.  We are trying to Migrate from the Windows on initial setup - which is what the Mac asks you when you first start it:  Language, Keyboard (english) and then if you are setting a New Mac or wanting to tranfer your info to set up from another Mac or from a PC.  You choose PC and the MA automatically looks for the other PC.  The Windows MA does the same thing.  You launch it on the PC and it looks for the Mac to connect to.
They are not "finding" each other - even when connected directly via the ethernet cable to each other as dictated by the MA instructions  (see the link you provided and click:
Transferring with the Setup Assistant that appears when your Mac starts up for the first time
This is what I am doing.  This is what 2 different guys from Apple Care also said was correct.
They do not communicate.  This is why some in the ML discussion area are telling me I can't do this with an ethernet cable even though these are the instructions.  They are telling me to use the TC as a router between them.
The PC is already wirelessly connected to the TC but when I connect the Mac to the TC it still does nothing (because I assume it hasn't been "set up" yet to the wireless network).
I did not want to set up the Mac initially on its own because then you create a User and Password and when you migrate it creates a second User and will not migrate into the initial one you set up, ergo you forever are stuck with 2 users on login and 2 sets of stuff taking up space in your Mac.
It should do this on start up.  I have NO doubt this is a PC issue, even though I disabled everything I could possibly see to do on it (this is why I need the PC geek in the UK to make sure).  The Apple techs have told me some people have to disable and reboot this stuff several times (ARGH!) LOL!
Anyway I did wonder when I tried yesterday to simply take TC off the internet connection and set it up on its own, I could never get it to stop looking for internet (I rebooted it and reinstalled it with a new name and password), but when you look at it in Airport Utility (I'm using a Macbook for the set up), you see it still blinking looking for internet.
I could not find any instructions for someone to use the TC as a router only or as a server, even though you can see there are more choices in the AU setup tabs.  The one guy at the Apple store (not Apple Care) said that if I connected the 2 computers to the TC it would act as a router and they could "see" each other for me to setup - but this did not work, hence I came here.
Hope I'm making sense!  Thanks so much for your help.

  • Is there a way to display movies purchased from itunes from my ipad to my apple TV without internet (still using wifi)

I am going on vacation and will have a wifi network, but no internet access. I have tried to display downloaded movies from my ipad purchased on itunes to my apple TV, but get "Unknown Error -3". I can use mirroring, but not show the video. I am signed into the same account on both devices and the movie is downloaded to the ipad. The only issue I can think of is some DRM check, but I am not sure.
Has anyone been able to do this? It would be nice to be able to use my purchased movies on vacation without needing internet.

This was a big advantage of AppleTV1 - generally it did not need internet authorisation for synced material on its internal drive and was great for holiday/vacation.
I tend to use a Mac Mini these days when going away.

    Thanks.

Without the previous user's ID and password, or getting him to remove the phone from his list of devices, the iPhone is useless. There is no workaround for this and certainly where individuals are concerned Apple cannot help.
I have seen a suggestion that Apple may be willing to do this in a corporate situation like the one you are in, but I've seen no confirmation of this. You have nothing to lose by contacting Apple and asking, but don't be surprised if you are told it can't be done. This is a security device and if it was possible to bypass it there would be no point in having it in the first place.

Connect time capsule via ethernet to Mac for back-up only. Is it possible without internet connection ?

    Hi Bob,
I'm not certain the post I sent was posted correctly, as I added it as a reply to a 3-year old thread. Since this is a recently-active thread, though not specific to the issue at hand, I thought I'd post again:
Three years ago you helped me set up a roaming wireless network in my home. It's been rock-steady and I'm forever grateful to you for the time and guidance you gave me. I'd now like to swap out my AirPort Extreme base station for a time capsule. As I understand it, I should be able to unplug the base station and replace it with the TC without problem, so long as I use all the same settings on my TC... network name, security protocol, password, etc. Given the complexity of my network, I thought I should check with you first for any advice you might have. I don't want to set up a new network or make any changes to the existing one-- with the exception of using the TC in place of the AE. I'm already using Time Machine for backups. As a refresher, my current setup has the AE as base station and 3 expresses hard-wired with Ethernet connections elsewhere in my home. I have a 4th express set up wirelessly to use with my stereo system at the front of the house. All AXs are 'n's and are set up, as per your instructions, in Bridge mode to extend the existing network. I'm running the most updated version of Mavericks on my MBPro. Any suggestions you might have will be, as always, very much appreciated! Sincerely, Phyllis Sommers
