BT Wiring upgrade

Hello everyone,
I need some help and advice please. I've recently moved to a 1960s house, and I'm getting broadband speeds of around 1MB. All the phone sockets seem to have old non-NTE5 faceplates, fed from an old brown oval Bakelite box in the loft.
My question is; is it worth asking. BT to upgrade the sockets/wiring and, if so, who should pay?
Here is a copy of my line status:

Connection Information
Line state: Connected

Many thanks.

That arrangement is known as "star wiring". It's not a great problem for normal phones, but it can ruin broadband speed.
You could pay Openreach to sort it out (arranged through BT).
Alternatively, if you can work out which socket is supposed to be the master, you could disconnect all the others at the junction box and see if that helps.  You would then need to re-wire any extensions that you need so that they are connected to the back of the master socket.
But ideally, you want a proper new NTE5 master socket, from Openreach.

  • Now that I have iOS 5.1 and iTunes 10.6, neither device is visible in iTunes, wired or wireless

I did the upgrade wirelessly on iPad2 and a wired upgrade on iPhone4, and then upgraded the iTunes app on my Desktop.  Now I get no error and hitting the sync wirelessly, or when plugging it in, but I also don't see the devices in iTunes.
I searched the forums and found a few things with iTunes barking about not recognizing apps, and refusing to sync.  And I tried some of the remedies for that, restarting the devices and iTunes, but no help there.
Everything else appears to work fine.  I've also upgraded daughter's iPhone, and hope that this can be resolved before she notices that it's broken.  Eeek.

Something I rarely do, but a reboot of the mac was required to get iTunes and the iPhones/iPad talking despite the fact that nothing said it was required.

  • Airport Base Station Set Up

Hi, I've been trying to get an Airport Base Station set up for a few weeks. There is currently a problem getting wireless connectivity. The computer recognizes the base station, but does not see the server. I'm not sure how to get a wireless connection from the current location of this base station. The base station is inside of a classroom with reinforced steel walls and a steel door. I believe that this is causing a major issue with getting wireless connection. Is there anything that I can do to try and get connection? I tried hooking up an antenna, but that did not work. The only thing that I can think of is to get a few base stations and just hook them up going up the stairs to this classroom. I'm really pressing for the school to get an Ethernet connection so that we would not have to worry about wireless for this part of the building. This is the only part of the building that is really bad for reception. If there is anything else that I can try to get connection please let me know.

If you could run a length of proper antenna cable to a QuickerTek unit,
a "powered external antenna" could at least get the signal past the steel
and concrete signal barriers. Ethernet into the classrooms and then go
wireless is even better; and depending on class size and expected other
features (such as wireless printing, etc) the options vary in what wi-fi
    base you use.
The AEBS seems a bit more durable and has a few more features than
an Express base station; plus the larger unit supports more connections.
But, without a source for a signal, you may be facing headaches.
What about one of those devices that uses electrical outlets for a data
or internet connection? There may be alot of interference in the wiring
in a school or commercial building; but there may be a chance you can
get some kind of device for the ethernet data to flow over AC power wire.
A few, in an older article about data over phone lines, include
adapters from a few companies in this link:
    http://www.tidbits.com/tb-issues/TidBITS-482.html
The "Farallon HomeLINE network" was promising in some
cases; if there is something that can send DSL over house
hold or AC wires, then decode it, you may get internet into
a building that has no ethernet and can't get wireless.
Someone probably knows of a newer technology or a way
to work around your isolation issues in a steel/concrete bldg.
PS: Isn't there any technology grants with the phone or ISP
companies in your area from such places as the Gates Found
ation or other networking grants for schools that could have
the phone or internet providers do that wiring upgrade?

  • Please help with speed issues and powerline adapte...

    Hello all,
I have had infinity for a few months now and I am very unhappy with the quality of service so far, I wont go into that however,
the problems I currently have are:
speed dropped from 76.8Mbps down to 34.6Mbps within a week of going live, they have replaced my HH3 twice to try and remedy this but its still the same, anything you can recommend?
as for the powerline adapters, i bought 2 extra when I took out my infinity package, all 4 have failed twice, they have been replaced aswell, received a new set this morning to install and they don't work!
When I set them up I get the green data light and green power light, however once I plug the Ethernet cables in, the data lights go off after around 10sec,
no matter how many times I reset and marry them its the same output, then maybe they will work for around 10-15 minutes and then go off again.
I have 4 adapters in use ATM
2 for vision and 2 for my computer
bt sent me 2 different models for some reason
I have the white simpler networks ones, 2 have black writing and 2 have orange,
sorry for the essay but from the experience I have had from BT so far I am not impressed
thankyou for any help in advance
    regards

The 200mbps refers to the theoretical duplex speed and not the actual connection speed. In ideal conditions the actual is about 70 to 80mbps for the 200 adapters. So therefore most of the time in normal conditions they connect at a much lower speed.
That's what I meant, hence why would you get 500Mbps ones if they ain't going to reach unless you're going to have your house wiring upgraded if the speed is rubbish. Didn't mean to be rude xD

  • USB port power management issue on apple aluminium wired keyboard after upgrade to 10.8.5

    Hi there,
Since I upgraded my imac (late 2012) from 10.8.4 to 10.8.5 today, i can't plug any usb flash drive, or my iPhone, to the USB port of the wired keyboard anymore; I have a power management message asking to plug the usb device to the imac directly!!
It was working perfectly just before the upgrade, is it a bug, any idea?

    FYI...
I tried reporting the bug but so far have had no luck being able to do so.
I went to the developer center as Eric suggested and signed in with my Apple ID.
Once there I clicked on "Bug Reporting".
That took me to a Bug Reporting page with the heading "Submitting Bugs and Feedback".
On the side of that page is a little box that says "Apple Bug Reporter: Sign in with the Apple ID you used to register as an Apple Developer to submit a bug."
(This step seems somewhat ridiculous since I had to sign in with my Apple ID just to get this far. Now it wants me to sign in again.)
When I click the  the "Sign in" button I get this:
An error has occurred. Please report the error to Apple Inc. by emailing the error detail to [email protected]
So, it seems the bug reporter doesn't work. This has been going on since the time of my last post here.

  • Can an iMac 10.6.7 snow leopard with wired MOUSE be upgraded to LION OX?

Hi can you help,  Can my iMac OS X 10.6.7 that uses a wired mouse be upgraded to Lion OX if so how could I zoom the screen with my fingers as I dont have a magic mouse or magic pad?  Also can my iMac work okay if I got rid of the mouse for the pad.  I bought the iMac just 2 mnths before the new ones came out pity but love it anyway as I have had 3 windows PCs and 2 laptops but nne of them are as good as the Apple iMac.

As long as your iMac meets the system requirements, you can buy Lion - having a wired mouse has nothing to do with the operating system; it just will not allow you to use any gestures. But I can't see why you just couldn't use it as you always have. And, as long as your iMac supports bluetooth, I'm sure you can buy a trackpad if you like - then you'd be able to use gestures.

  • Old Wiring On Phoneline - Upgrade Cost?

    Hi there,
Our phone's wiring in our house is very old and I was wondering what cost it would be to upgrade it and if it would be a big job?
I have attached pictures of the wiring, which is very fragile looking.

The only way I know would to inform BTr that you have a damaged master socket and require a new line fitting. However openreach might not be so open to the work, unless it was the only viable solution to a fault. ie they'll balance the amount of work done against the benefit.
Engineer visits are usually charge at a flat rate of £130.

  • Wired Ethernet Deskjet Pro 8500 failed after Windows 8.1 upgrade

Following an upgrade to Windows 8.1 my ethernet wired Deskjet Pro 8500 A909g disappeared from my installed printers. This printer/scanner had worked successfully on this computer under Windows 8.
I have tried several suggestions including uninstalling all HP software and starting over with a fresh install. I can see the printer on my network by using a browser and going to the printers web address. I have downloaded HP's Print and Scan Doctor and can see the printer on the scan conducted.
When I download the latest HP Officejet Pro Full Feature Software and Drivers, Version14.8.0, and run it, the setup cannot see my printer on the network. When I select the choice of a wired network setup, the software searches for a device then returns to selection screen. If I select a wired ethernet setup again the same cycle repeats.
I have gone through HP Solutions for Install Errors (Windows 8) Troubleshooting wizard without finding a solution. Once, during my efforts I successfully installed this printer using an USB cable, but this is not the solution I desire.
This printer is successfully installed on a second Windows 7 computer on the same wired ethernet Workgroup.
    Are there any solutions available?

I have patiently waited a week for any suggestions but have heard nothing. I have searched the forums and support sites without finding a working solution. I have purchased and successfully used many HP products both at home and in business for many years. This incident is discouraging and does not speak well for HP product service. Is anyone listening?

    Fixing a Mavericks Installation Problem
How to manage a failed OS X Mavericks installation | MacFixIt - CNET Reviews.
    Try these in order:
    1. a. Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
        b. Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
    2. Restart the computer in Safe Mode, then restart again, normally. If this doesn't help, then:
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the
COMMAND and R keys until the Utilities menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and
after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears.
Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    3. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
    4. Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks: Reboot from the Recovery HD. Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks from the Utilities menu, and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • Old Telecom wiring, possible upgrade?

Hi, I'm hoping to get some answers to a long standing issue.
I currently have a very old looking Telecom box and set up at our home, we moved into our house 2 years ago and the previous resident was an elderly lady who'd lived here for 25+ years. Since moving in we have experienced relatively slow DL speeds (at first we struggled to get over 2mg, now it's around 3mg) where our neighbours all receive a steady 6-8mg. When performing tests I have informed BT tech support that my current box does not have a test line and that it is also very old. I have also been performing line tests using 17070 as people often comment about our poor line quality and there is a constant buzz and crackling while performing the quiet line test.
I would like to find some sort of solution for this problem (I believe the line into the house requires upgrading) as I have called BT Tech support on several occasions and generally just get fobbed off with the same excuses each time.
So how can I enquire about having our phone line checked? And if required upgraded?
    Many Thanks
    Ash

    Hi AshleyKD,
You need to get the phone line sorted out first because this will kill broadband. Report the phone line as faulty (I think this is 151) and don't mention broadband. When an engineer comes out to fix the line he will replace the old socket for a new master socket if necessary.
Do you have any internal extensions from your main socket? This can lead to problems and if the engineer finds problems with internal house wiring you could be liable for the visit cost.
There should be someone along soon with more knowledge than me who can advise more detail of what to look for.

  • What wiring changes involved in upgrading from FIOS internet to FIOS internet + TV with DVR

We have FIOS internet now with Actiontec router but we still have Comcast TV. I am considering switching over to FIOS for TV too but would like to know what wiring changes would be involved, if any. I'll describe the current setup.  We have a couple of soho LANS and new wiring cannot be run to the two soho LANs.
    ONT.....coax cable......4-way coax splitter...
Splitter Leg#1 goes to the Actiontec router.
Splitter Leg#2 goes to coax line to a home office. There's an ethernet-coax bridge (Actiontec ECB2200) and a router for a small soho LAN there.
Splitter Leg#3 goes to coax line to the attic. In the attic there's an ethernet-coax bridge (Actiontec ECB2200) and a router for a secon small soho LAN there.
    Splitter Leg#4 is free.
Will adding FIOS TV be as simple as attaching a coax cable to Leg#4 on the splitter and connecting that coax to the DVR?

    tr888 wrote:

Absolutely.  All you have to worry about is running the RG6 coax from the splitter to the DVR, and Verizon may even cover that depending on the terms of your install.  Good luck..

  • Need to upgrade modem; how to "pre-plan" re-installing WRT54G wired/wireless router

I'm way past overdue to upgrade my modem, and from what I've read in reviews, getting a combo modem/router doesn't seem to be the best thing to do as far as reliability & range issues.  So, I want to upgrade my modem & then use the same router/access point I currently have.  However, I've read of other users having problems accessing the control panel after connecting to a new modem....so want to know what information I need to have before I start this project.
Does this mean I'm going to have to basically start back at the beginning and set up my home network all over again?
I'm pretty tech-savy...but I don't do it enough to really start the project & see where it takes me.....I don't have the TIME!  LOL!
Thanks for any help/advice anyone can offer!

    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

It will really depend on the type of settings that your ISP would put on the new modem. If the configuration of the new modem would be the same with the old one, then there is no need for you to do any changes on the router. Just plug in the new modem, perform a powercycle by unplugging the power cord of the modem and router and it should work. However, if it doesn't, what you can do is to reset the router and reconfigure it. The following links would help you reconfigure the router after a reset.
Setting up a Linksys router with Cable Internet service
Setting up a Linksys router for DSL Internet connection

  • Wired ethernet network disappears after upgrading to Yosemite

I am a lone iMac on a Windows network, but have connected through ethernet without a problem for years. Since upgrading to Yosemite, however, my network has disappeared. My ethernet is connected, my IP address is the same as before (assigned by DHCP) and I have made no changes to any other settings. The only difference now is that my mapped network drives cannot connect and in Finder, when I click on NETWORK and SERVERS, there is nothing there.
The company IT guy is a Certified Microsoft dude and he swears nothing has been changed in the network. It must be the upgrade.
What has Yosemite changed? (The Firewall is off.)

    Found a fix
When trying to fix a wake failure, I simultanuously fixed the issue with network drives. It is connected to the Preferences.
Here is how I could solve the problems:
Press command+shift+c - > Macintosh HD - > Library - > Preferences -> Drag SystemConfiguration on desktop, it's going to make a copy of it (May ask for password, then delete it from the Preferences (which is the initial folder). Shut down, then do a PRAM Reset. If you don't know how to do that :
After you shut down the computer, locate the option, command, P and R from your keyboard. Press the power button to turn it on and quickly press all four buttons before hearing the first 'power up sound'. Keep them pressend until you hear a second 'power up sound'.
