Bug in DatagramChannel close?

The following code leaves an open (unbound UDP) socket on Linux and Solaris with J2SE 1.4.2_08 and JDK 1.5.0_03.
DatagramChannel dc = DatagramChannel.open();
dc.socket().bind(new InetSocketAddress(12345));
dc.close();
Is this a bug in Java or am I missing something?

I have verified that the following code leaves a socket open on Linux with 1.4.2_08:
DatagramChannel dc = DatagramChannel.open();
DatagramSocket ds = dc.socket();
ds.close();
dc.close();
The socket left open is the one created with the dc.socket() call. It is closed only after a full GC run (probably when the DatagramSocket is finalized), so I have to modify my application to call System.gc periodically. I'm not too happy with this workaround :(

  • Why preferences make a grafical bug when you close it?

[http://screencast.com/t/mosz2dXev Here can you see a video of the problem]
I have tried to disable all addons, but it did not help.

There are two reasons this happens.
    1. The file is damaged, or (more often) made slightly wrong by bad software (more common than you'd think). Adobe Reader repairs the file, and wants you to save the repaired file. (If you do, the message won't be repeated)
    2. The file does some clever stuff with forms when you open it, and changes the file. Again Adobe Reader wants to save it. (Even if you do, the same thing could happen next time).
If you didn't make the file you can safely ignore this.

  • Adobe AIR 4 &13 crash or closes without bugs or reason

When testing my app in Flash IDE, randomly and without reaspon (no bug), the player closes :
    [UnloadSWF] myclip.swf
    Test Movie terminated.
My clip is pretty intensive since it uses Starling and Nape. Used to work ok on small levels, but on bigger levels (more memory used) it just randomly happens.
    Any idea ?
update : the crash happens when I'm not moving my player anymore (no more key press). As long as I key press I'm good, once I release the key, BOOM.
update2 : Publish engine is Air 4/13 for Android
update3 : happens also when moving player (key down) but more often on idle

Flash & Air runtime use virtual machine and if it don't respond - Runtime will terminate itself. This can be initiated without CPU hogs so you can't see any warnings or CPU slowdown. I saw this time to time.
First of all - you need find minium source code that can generate this issue and sent it to bug base. But if you want - you can send it to me firstly. Any NDA will be reserved.
And I can investigate it. And if there some runtime error - I will publish to Adobe team into bugbase.
    Firstly let me know:
    1) Flash ide version
    2) As I understand - it's Windows? Not MacOS..
    3) Do you saw Adobe Scout report? May be there some memory leaks or GPU overload...

  • FCP 7 BUG REPORT: "close gap" screws up marker locations

First off, it's wonderful to finally have automatically moving markers. Thanks.
    the bug:
If you "close gap" between two clips (ctrl-G), the markers past that point will ONLY update their locations correctly if the play head is positioned at the start of the gap. If the play head is in the middle of the gap, it does something wrong and unexpected. I edit with ctrl-G a lot, so this is a problem for me.
Also, while I greatly appreciate the new marker list export tool (which makes the self-moving markers useful), giving a longer-than-short name to a marker screws up the column spacing of the export. I propose having an option in the export box to automatically truncate long names to preserve column spacing. Or you could just space all columns based on the longest name.
    Thanks

I posted it as a bug report as well.
I'm starting to see that these automatically moving sequence markers are of no use the way they behave now. For example, select half the clips in the timeline, type "+100" to move everything 100 frames, and watch how the markers don't keep up with the movement. Or just click and drag to move the clips. If you were using the markers to know where your VFX shots and commercial breaks are, you have now lost them. These sequence markers are only of use if they ALWAYS remain where they are in relation to the media below them.
Also, there needs to be an option for a specific marker to NOT ripple it -- not just a global toggle. For example, on a TV show you often have a specific length you need to hit in 23.98 to end up with the right length in 29.97 DF and it's nice to put a marker at that point in the sequence. But that doesn't work with ripple mode on.
In short, I like the new feature but it needs to be implemented more intelligently to be useful.

  • Is pop up Firefox or a bug?

    Hi,
For weeks this has been popping up on the screen of my Macbook Pro.
Because I don't know whether or not it is a bug, I just close it and do not follow through. This is not in the format of most of my software updates.
    Is it one of yours?

You are being too clever by half with this ridiculous contact procedure.

    What is in the pop-ups?
Is it about updating (you have an outdated Firefox 3.6.12 - current is 3.6.20) ?
If you have problems with updating or with the permissions then easiest is to download the full version and trash the currently installed version to do a clean install of the new version.
Download a new copy of the Firefox program and save the DMG file to the desktop

  • Safari suddenly no longer accessing some websites

I am on OS 10.4.9 using Safari 2.0.4. I'm aware both are outdated, but for various reasons I have chosen not to upgrade because I haven't really had any need to. But some weirdness has happened regarding my Safari and this is perhaps more a curiosity question than anything else (in part because everyone I talk to offline is suggesting I switch to Firefox or Opera anyway).
My Safari has developed a case of "Sudden Website Dropsy" or SWD. That is when a website that worked perfectly well a couple of days before no longer works properly, or at all, a few days later.
There are 3 examples I can cite:
    1. CNN.com. The site still works, but the formatting is messed up, and videos often cause Safari to close.
    2. TVshowsondvd.com . I was able to access this site up until Tuesday. Then it gave me a 404 error thereafter. I thought the site was dead or offline until I discovered I could still access it using an old version of Netscape. I contacted the webmaster and he said he'd changed nothing and has no idea why Safari overnight would forget the site existed.
    3. Attempts to access any of the Wikia websites results in an instant quit by Safari. Again, this was an overnight development. The main Wikipedia site, however, still works fine. Again, I'm able to access the Wikia sites using my old, unsupported, outdated Netscape browser, which seems to suggest Wikia didn't upgrade beyond Safari 2's capabilities.
I know we're always supposed to upgrade our programs and systems and the reason for me not doing so is a mixture of paranoia (the last major upgrade I did cost me my ability to access to some major work-required software so I'm willing to sacrifice some bells and whistles to be able to keep my job running smoothly), but I don't feel this is one of those cases where I'm trying to make my old Safari do something it isn't capable of. These are websites that worked fine days or, at most, weeks ago, so there shouldn't be an access issue. The sudden 404 on that one site is perhaps the most puzzling.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks!
    Alex

Web sites change over time, using new coding, new technologies, etc. You're using an older version of Safari, and it has issues that can easily cause you to be unable to access certain web sites or cause Safari to crash. That is why you need to upgrade to 10.4.11 and the latest version of Safari. No tonly does it fix numerous bugs, but also closes a variety of security vulnerabilities.
You gain nothing by not doing it, and you risk everything. Your paranoia can be solved if you simply get a backup plan in order for your Mac and follow it. One of these days something bad will happen, at the worst possible time. I've yet to see or hear of anyone who lost their data by upgrading to 10.4.11, so now is the time to do it.

  • 10.4.6 update issues with Powerbook G4

I have witnessed an error resulting from the 10.4.6 software update on two independent computers, and am stumped as to why I can't find any other references to it.
When I first installed the update (about a week or two after release), my computer's restart looked a bit odd: My wallpaper came up, along with the Spotlight icon in the upper right corner. The bar cut off after the icon, with the wallpaper behind it (as opposed to a blank bar). The screen remained frozen like this for a few minutes, before the OS finally came up looking normal. After that, the computer was not running so hot, so I ran disc utility, which seems to have helped a little, but not much.
Programs that once ran stable—text edit, safari, etc.—will freeze for no reason. When I try to force quit, the little "program running" triangle remains on the dock. If I pull up the "force quit" dialogue box rather than ctrl-clicking on the dock icon, it disappears from that boxes program list, but remains on the dock. My external harddrive, which I also repaired, isn't always recognized when plugged in, especially after the computer freezes and I have to restart.
I recently saw the similar problem arise in a Powerbook that is unrelated to mine—and more than a year newer than mine, from the last generation of G4 Powerbooks. The main difference is that after the installation of 10.4.6, this Powerbook had to go to to a repair shop and its owner had to pay $60 bucks (software problems aren't covered under Apple's lovely warranty) startup her computer, which now runs smoothly. When the computer powered on, the same wall-paper-and-spotlight-corner screen from my first restart appeared. I suspect that she might have given up and powered off too quickly after restarting, and somehow made the hang-up permanent.
The only bug description mildly close I have found to this issue is here:
    http://www.macfixitforums.com/php/showflat.php?Cat=&Board=tiger&Number=759499&pa ge=0&view=collapsed&sb=5&o=31&fpart=1
The only similarity is that I use an external harddrive to hold most of my music. However, I haven't really made any major file moves, which is the main focus of this post. The PB that was repaired had been connected to my external harddrive, but several months before the 10.4.6 install (the computer was two time zones away when the error popped up.
Illegal names in the catalog file seem to be what disc utility said it was repairing on all three discs.
Any guesses as to what's wrong and/or recommendations on how to fix this myself would be appreciated. And did I do a bad job of searching, or am I just in contact with the only two computers that encountered this?
    Thanks!

    Hi Jeremy,
You may be able to repair this with the 10.4.6 Stand Alone Combo Updater.
This is a fuller install, as opposed to an incremental "delta" update so it should overwrite any files that are damaged or missing. It does not matter if you have applied it before. It has worked well for many.
Remember to Verify Disk before update and repair permissions before and after update from /applications/utilities/disk utility.
Additionally, if you are you running any Adobe CS 2 applications, there is a bug in the Adobe "Legal" folders (Photoshop) anyway that generates an "illegal name" error. If you're running CS 2, trash the legal folders in each application, including Adobe Bridge. Then run disk repair again, until it reports no errors.

  • Text based VI Icon editor with letter compression

For anyone who is looking for a quick and easy text based icon editor I've posted my latest version in the LAVA CR
     http://forums.lavag.org/downloads.html&showfile=56
    Description:
This is the second version of my vi icon editor and was created in LV8.2. The purpose is to help quickly create text base icons. The editor can be used in place of the standard NI icon editor or as a stand alone vi. see instructions. My original posting of the icon editor Ver. 1 can be found here
    LabVIEW 7.0,7.1 http://forums.lavag.org/index.php?s=&s...ost&p=19022
    LabVIEW 8.0 http://forums.lavag.org/index.php?s=&s...ost&p=12920
    Instructions:
1: The icon editor was designed to be used as a replacement for the standard NI editor LV8.x only. To get LabVIEW 8.x to use the editor place the three files (lv_icon.vi, color templates.bin and the folder lv_icon_Subvis) in the LabVIEW 8.2\resource\plugins directory.
The next time the icon editor is called LabVIEW will use the lv_icon.vi instead of the standard one.
There is a button on the editor that will allow you to use NI’s editor when a text icon is not desired.
2: The icon editor can also be called from another vi or used as a stand alone tool. Make sure the “From Editor” control is set to false either via terminal in the lower left corner of the connector pane or manually in the FP. This setting indicates to the vi that a vi reference will be used to extract and save the icon information. If the “VI REF” input control is invalid at runtime a dialogue box will appear asking the user to select a vi.
    New features:
Along with the auto drawing and Text compressing from version 1, version 2 has 2 new features.
1: In addition to the 2 color format in version 1 the icon editor now supports a 5 color format (Frame, Header text, Header Back, Body Text, and Body Back). This is the standard frame that many programmers use.
2: In version 2 the last 10 icon color sets are saved in a binary file and are recalled each time the editor is open. These color sets can then be selected and reused.
    Future Ideas and improvements:
A graphics picker that would import a list of graphics to choose from
Template creators were text zones could be created to avoid interfering with graphics.
Incorporate some or all of the Ni editor functions.
Text extractor that would fill in the text boxes from the icon image.
Please feel free to give me feedback. This version has benefited greatly from ideas given to me by coworkers and other programmers.

    Version 2.2:
Along with the all the features from version 2.1, version 2.2 has several new features.
1: A new color picker was added. The standard NI color picker has been replaced by one that will only show the legal 221 colors allowed by LabVIEW for icons.
My thanks to Justin Goeres for the idea.
2:Key navigation has improved. The key navigation will only set focus to the text boxes to navigate between boxes use the tab, enter, up and down keys.
My thanks to boone_93 for the idea.
3:Improved UI. The buttons and current and previous icons have been relocated for a more intuitive look. I have also added tip strips to the buttons and history array.
My thanks to ahull for the idea.
4:Random color picker. A random color button has been added to help pick colors.
My thanks to Dave Graybeal for the idea.
5: FP auto centers. The icon editor will now open in the center of the primary display.
My thanks to tcplomp for the code.
6: The ability to read the text in the icon was added. If the icon to be changed was previously created by this icon editor the program will automatically detect the characters in the icon and convert them back into strings. This function allows for small changes like color changes and spelling mistakes to be changed without having to type all the text over.
    This one was all mine.
7:Bug with Panel close fixed. When the user presses the x in the upper right corner the editor will shut down gracefully instead of locking up.
I made a avi file that shows some of the new features for Version 2.2 which I posted the support thread.
Please feel free to give me feedback. This version has benefited greatly from ideas given to me by coworkers and other programmers.

  • How do we unload a DLL with multiple different CLFN?

    Hi everybody,
I'm currently designing an application that implements multiple functions of a DLL that I build.
I have to call two functions one after the other to obtain the results of my functions. The first function (Read_Property) is doing many operations and saves its informations in a data layer inside the DLL.(Essentially some static arrays of string). The second one (get_Data_Array) is just a "get function" that returns the string at a defined position of an array.
The first version of my application was a state machine with a front panel where the user just had to enter the parameter of the function and press a button. I wasn't unloading DLL at any time because i thought that LabVIEW did it itself when I close the instance of the application. I got great results and everything was fine and I could do multiple call to my pair of functions without having any problems. However, I discovered a bug when I close the instance of my application and that I started another one. My first function got a Timeout for no apparent reason. I worked a lot with my DLL in a C context and I know that this kind of bug appears when multiple instances are running simultaneously. After having a timeout, the only thing I could do to fix this problem was to reboot LabVIEW.
So I think that my problem comes from the fact that there is interference in some static variables of the first function because that the DLL wasn't unloaded correctly. After realizing that, I tried to unload the dll in the last state of my state machine because it would clear all static variables, but it wasn't a success. The same problem was still present. After that, I tried to encapsulate my problem to a single VI. So I simply tried to execute my 2 functions one after the other and then unload the DLL by connecting an empty path to both of em. As for my first version, after two or three runs of my VI, i got a timeout again.
    My VI looks like that:
Why does my DLL doesn't unload??
    Thank you
    Mathieu Veillette, Ing Jr.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Tanya,
The KnowledgeBase you posted is the first thing I looked out when I began
I tried to change the "Empty Path constant" to a "Not a Path constant", but nothing changed.
I also change the DLL configuration to use the "UI thread" instead of "any". Once again, no change.
I tried to use other functions of my DLL and they seems to work fine, but their internal execution is less sensitive to interference than the Read_Property function. (The one I've got problem with since the beginning)
To be sure that the problem doesn't come from the DLL function, I did a small program in C that calls multiple instances of an executable version of this function. At each call, i explicitly load and unload DLL. When I do that, everything works like a charm.
I don't know the internal behavior of LabVIEW with static variables used in a DLL. Do the static variables of the DLL are stored in the main process memory(LabVIEW) and cleaned up only when LabVIEW is closed? I really doubt of it but well, I really don't know where to look right now.
Thanks for your support, it's really appreciated.

  • 11.03 does not play on pressing play

    Hi,
Itunes was open and then I put in my external audio-interface (usb - DJ8 - Native Instruents) in the slot.
itunes then did not play the music, pressing play did not work.
in versions before 11.xx it took a second and the interface worked,
    but not in 11.03...
It even crashed earlier this day when syncing to my iphone.
btw: why does it cost €50 euro for a phonecall to report a bug?
    crazy.

Close all apps in the multitasking display and reboot your iPad. Then try again.
Double tap the home button and you will see apps lined up going left to right across the screen. Swipe to get to the app that you want to close and then swipe "up" on the app thumbnail/preview screen to close it. Close every app.
Reboot the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider if it appears on the screen - let go of the buttons. Let the iPad start up.

  • Alum Powerbook 1ghz Does not Sleep when Lid is Closed

    Hi,
I have a 1ghz Aluminum Powerbook with the lower memory slot issue. Everything is working great (besides the memory issue of course), and this one other bug: When I close the lid, the powerbook does not go to sleep. I have to manually select "Sleep" for it to go to sleep. The sleep light comes on and all, but I guess it just doesn't recognize the display lid shut.
The sleep issue is not the biggest thing, but is this a sign of a bigger issue, like logic board failure? Or is it simply a sensor that is not recognizing the powerbook lid shut?
Please let me know. I'm really enjoying my "new" powerbook after selling my titanium.
    Thanks!
    Al Powerbook   Mac OS X (10.4)   Dual G5 2.0 3gb 320gb 20 Cinema

    Hi Steve,
Hmm, the lid problem is interesting - if the Powerbook doesn't wake up from opening the lid, however, then it's most likely a sensor problem, which as you found has an easy workaround. YOu could always go to the Power Section of the System Profiler and seeing if the "wake on Clamshell open" and "Wake on Clamshell Closed" are set to Yes and No respectively. If they aren't those settings, then resetting the Power Management Unit might help, or just reset the PMU and see what happens (info here: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=14449)
As far as I know, (which probably isn't much!) the memory slot issue is just annoying, and probably won't do much damage to your computer. However, (and probably what you don't want to hear!) when my computer suffered the problem 2 weeks ago, I noticed that the memory door seemed to be a little bit warmer than usual and the rest of the computer in general. So I took it to the Mac Genius in the Birmingham Apple Store and they had the logic board replaced. Now, it seems to be running at a normal temperature. But looking back on it now, the temperature change may have been just subjective - ah well, your mileage may vary.

  • WCS won't start/run - Health Monitor is already running

I am posting here my frustrations with running WCS in a Virtual Machine (VMWare) and just wanted to let everyone know what my issue was and what fixed it. WCS will complain when the memory is below 2.0 GB at the time of installation, but does not stipulate that this will cause it to not work, only that performance will be affected. Until my server arrives, I am forced to run WCS in a VM on a Windows XP desktop that has 3 GB of RAM. Not wanting to suck up too much RAM for the VM due to the fact that the workstation is used for other applications, I selected 1.0 GB of RAM. WCS installed and started the services fine. I pulled up the login page locally just to be sure. When I came back to work today, it was down. The wcs-0-0.log indicated everything was fine, but the apache_error.log showed this:
    [Thu Apr 23 18:46:45 2009] [notice] Child 4064: Listening on port 443.
    [Thu Apr 23 18:46:45 2009] [notice] Child 4064: Listening on port 80.
[Thu Apr 23 18:48:17 2009] [notice] Parent: Received shutdown signal -- Shutting down the server.
[Thu Apr 23 18:48:17 2009] [notice] Child 4064: Exit event signaled. Child process is ending.
So you can see that it shut down after a couple of minutes. When I ran the WCSStatus link, it showed only that "Health monitor is already running." - that's all. So with that non-specific error, I was left to continue the struggle on my own. No current posts in the NetPro forum describe my issue, although bug CSCsx34113 was close:
Windows logout causes Apache process and WCS JVM to exit
    Symptom:
When a user log outs of the physical console of a Win2K3 server, the Apache process and the WCS JVM exit.
    Conditions:
This only affects Win2K3 servers, and only happens when logging out of the physical console. Logging out of a Remote Desktop does not cause the processes to exit
    Workaround:
Do not log out of the physical console, if you must use it.
    Use Remote Desktop.
    Further Problem Description:
    None
I decided to bump the RAM to 2.0 GB on the VM anyways, and restart the VM. BINGO! WCS is up and operational. Hope this helps...
    Regards,
    Scott

Hey all, I have also experienced issues with services shutting down when logging out of WCS on a Remote Desktop session to the WCS server. I have experienced this with every version of WCS I have installed from 4.2 up to 5.2.x. If I were to launch WCS in a browser on the server everything was fine until I closed the browser (a logout probaby does the same thing). I always used to check my upgrades to make sure everything worked ok and then when I logged off I couldn't run WCS remotely and would eventually have to restart the WCS server to resolve the issue.
With the 6.0.132.0 code I just made sure NOT to launch WCS in a browser on the server. I performed my check remotely and avoided the whole issue.
For grins I just tested this by launching a browser on the WCS server and signing in and out of the application. It continued to run (never did in previous versions). It looks like perhaps this may have been resolved (at least for me) in the 6.0.132.0 WCS code.

  • PC suite install/uninstall

     Hello,
I have a N70 and it has a white screen of the death. I will buy a N97 but I can not install PC suite because it can not uninstall the old version of PC suite. I started PC Suite Cleaner 7.1.1 but he bug and it closes by itself. I have no nokia folder and I launched reg cleaner and rebooting but I still have the problem.
    Do you have a solution?
    Thank you.

You can try to manually uninstall PC Connectivity Solution, Nokia cable drivers, then PC Suite.
What's the law of the jungle?

  • Babylon window displays every time i start my computer it says strings.dat is missing or corrupted how can you get rid of this?

When i start my computer a window appears from Babylon and the message in the window is strings.dat is missing or corrupted.
it has a button to push that says ok but when clicked on with curser nothing happens i uninstalled all babylon down loads and this was left behind would just like to get this out of my computer.
    can someone please help.

pretty much exactly what i just figured out how to do it ealrier today! its a bug*er!
i have posted a help request on a tech forum with logs etc incase there is any deeper infection, and will post any decent answer here. ok?
basics for ridding of the actual babylon searchbar is like this...
loading firefox, noticed that my google search bar wasnt google anymore and had ababylon icon instead!
ASLO the browser displayed a FAKE GOOGLE search page!
so i opened firefox, typed "about:config" in url bar and then you look just underneath the url bar, and you'll see another search bar.
type babylon into it. right click on all of the results, and click reset.
thats it now disabled totally for now.
next go to tools>addons and look down the list and click uninstall babylon...
    bingo.
but its not over yet! .....
next go to start> search and type "babylon" (without the quotes) and see what comes up, mainly in programme files\mozzilla\search plugins
and in the macromedia folder. if you get a "cannot delete.." notice, then that just means you havnt closed firefox (wich is odd coz you've apparently uninstalled the bug*er), so close firefox, then delete. you should now get rid of them all.
it DOSNT show up on add/remove programmes, and it didnt show up on uninstall in advanced system care, though you may try the other uninstall button to the right , but you'll need to type in the "pathways" ( eg C:\my computer\programme files/etc).
i'm still not convinced that this is the end of it though.
from other forums i have noticed folk contacting AND phoning babylon and basaically being either abused or told they wont help.
it seems to be invisible to AVG (i have the premium one too!) though around the time i installed the xvid codecs i did get an avg notice warning of an infection found in my t-mobile modem (dongle) but it seemed to actually be the tmobile liveupdat.exe, so i left it as i am sure i would get even worse problems if a effed around with it. (ie no connection, (eventually)
this is th link to the posting i made on techguy
please dont post willy nilly babylon posting on it so the volunteers dont get pist off, as that wont help if there are really deeper problems to solve. this is the link to it [[have i cleaned babylon hijack infection properly?|here it is]]
