Buggy behaviors samples

Hi,
I have a general question about case samples of buggy behaviors in Java that a developer can face during execution of programs.
What can be most frequently buggy behaviors which developers face while programming and debugging on Java?
As for instance, there can be cases where in a GUI program, there can appear buggy behaviors such that a graphical element can appear in a wrong location (ex. textbox or button), or it fails to appears when it should appear. There are other cases with buggy behavior, but I am looking for a classification of this bugs.
Does there exist any classification of these "buggy behaviors" in repositories?

I need to find and analyze possible cases and try to classify them. I don't find useful articles on "buggy behavior" cases classification. There are articles about bug reports but not for general cases of this kind that I am asking. Then go ahead and do that. You're going to need a collection of source code and a history of the errors which arose during the production of that code.
If you know any resource where I can find information on this specific case, let me know. What "specific case" would that be? I haven't seen anything specific yet.

  • HP 8600 Plus - buggy behavior

When one of the ink cartridges level getting low, printer will freeze, will refuse to print, will become unachievable via HTTP until restarted by power off and on.
It prints well and communicates successfuly for a few seconds or minutes after a power on and off being made, but again, issue occurs every time and have to do restart again few.
This issue is 100% buggy software or faulty hardware as this problem has repeated on this printer and on our previous printer (same model).
Is this HP's method of convincing us to change cartridge early, before it's really empty?

    Hi,
As an all in one device, the printer should not work when any ink cartridge is depleted as it is required to maintain the printing system and ensure its functionality.
Please ensure the peinter directly connected t a wall socket and power on the device, then click the Copy icon and try making a copy, can you see any difference behavior?
I would also suggest updating the latest firmware, for a network connection follow these steps:
    http://support.hp.com/us-en/product/HP-Officejet-Pro-8600-Plus-e-All-in-One-Printer---N911g/4322915/...
If the printer is connected with a USB please clarify your operating system.

  • MultiCam workflow and buggy behavior (Premier Pro 2014 CC)

What is the best workflow for MultiCam with 2 or more different cameras (different color, gamma, etc.)?
I have used nesting to create one track per camera - then color adjust and then create a nesting of the different tracks.
But then you have to select and copy each segment of the overall nested tracks to get each multitrack clip and put in a bin.
If I adjust color on one track after splitting - is there any ripple or I would have to repeat the above steps?
I also notices that it is buggy - many times when I select Camera A when I go to beginning of sequence - many of the selections have been reversed with reversal again at clip transitions - resulting on exact opposite of what I selected or random changes. Locking the tracks does not prevent this. It seems to be overriding my choices based on some program logic!!
    Thanks
    M.

    1. Create a sequence matching the specs of your footage.
    2. Add the media, one camera per track.
    3. Manually sync the clips.
    4. Create a second sequence matching the specs of your media.
    5. Nest the first sequence into the second.
    5. Right click the nested clip, select Multi-Camera>Enable.
    6. Edit as needed.
    7. When editing is finished, go back to the original sequence and do CC and grading work on the original clips.

  • Drop down menus, dock etc. buggy behavior

I met this strange behavior on 10.7. but thought that 10.8. gonna work fine. Nope. Very often when I click the upper bar the drop down menu appears but if I scroll down no item is blue highlited. When I can switch from, for example, file to edit this will not happen. I have to click it again. I have a show/hide dock but it doesn't show/hide when I get the pointer to its location on the bottom. I have to click it. The same with resizing windows. When I hit the lower right corner of any window the resize pointer doesn't appear. I have to click it first to make it appear. It is the same in whole OSX, in any app. Sometimes this appears right after reboot, sometimes later after couple of minutes. My first thougt was that there's some issue caused by some apps. But now I have freshly installed Mt Lion on erased disc, no apps installed and works still like I wrote above. Erasing NVRAM and PRAM never helped. Using MACPRO early 2009. Any help?
A few videos attached below, just for illustration.

So, it looks like Apple screw up the Czech localization. I reinstalled whole system, after erasing the disc. I set up English as a default and it works without any problem. May be this could be solved only by switching languages earlier, who knows... So what's the point of whole story? A, learn English and run every Apple OS in native English. B, dear Apple Inc., if you offer so complex OS in different languages care of it's functionality in those languages and let your testers to test it deeply!
Thomas and calebfrom, thx for tips.
Apple, "thx" for many hours of my own time wasted when I tried to find the solution of this bug!

  • Buggy behavior with Windows 8.1

I've seen a few posts related to this, but no resolution.
I have a freshly installed Illustrator on a Windows 8.1 machine.  All of the settings are default as far as I know, and I haven't installed any plugins.
When I started using the app, the popup tools would not appear sometimes.  Sometimes they would work on one monitor and not the other.
Now, I am trying to draw lines with the pen tool, and the stroke and fill is coming out differently from what is shown on the tool bar.  I delete, change color, and some changes take effect; others don't.  So it is making the application basically unusable.
If I create a new file, the strokes and fills come out correctly.

    Hi,
If you attempt to right click it, what's the symptom?
We could try the following methods:
Method 1: Disconnect all the unnecessary external devices connected to the computer (except the mouse and the keyboard)
Please disconnect all the unnecessary external devices connected to the computer (except the mouse and the keyboard) and then check if you still face this issue.
Method 2: Update the Device Drivers on the Computer.
Step 1: Check the Windows updates for any latest driver updates.
Check in Windows updates if any driver updates are available. If so, install the same and check if it helps.
    a) Press “Windows Logo” + “W” keys from the keyboard.
    b) Type “Updates” in the search bar and click on “Install optional updates” from the left pane.
    c) From the “Windows Update” window, click on “Check for Updates” on the top left corner, to receive a fresh list of updates and then install all the updates listed there.
If no driver updates are available via Windows Update, then you may install them for all the devices on the computer from the Computer Manufacturer’s website.
Step 2: Update Driver Software from the Manufacturer’s website:
Go to the computer manufacturer’s website and search for the latest Windows 8 drivers available for all the devices on the computer and then install them by following the instructions given in the website

  • Buggy behavior since last Safari update

Yahoo mail is very slow mo since last Safari update was installed.

From your Safari menu bar click Safari / Reset Safari. Select the top 7 buttons, click Reset. Quit Safari, relaunch Safari.
Check Safari / Preferences - Extensions. If you have any installed, turn that off, quit Safari, relaunch Safari, try Gmail.
Definitely empty the cache more often either from the Safari menu bar, Safari / Empty Cache, or Option + Command + E on your keyboard.

  • RH9 FlashHelp Related Topic popup menu behavior

Hi. Recently upgraded to RH9 from RH7. Output is FlashHelp. Use IE7.
Discovered that when clicking on Related Topics button, page scrolls up and popup menu appears at the top of the topic, rather than appearing next to the button as it used to. Is there any way to resolve this buggy behavior? Attempted to recreate the button, used the topics found dialog option, etc. Get the same result regardless of changes to Related Topics options.
This issue occurs when I generate the output and test locally, as well as when it's published to our server.
    Appreciate any suggestions.

    Try Tools > Update DHMTL...
It's a wild guess and beyond that, I have no other ideas. Sorry.

  • Adobe TLF Editor  with AIR:buggy.

I am trying to embed the Adobe TLF editor in my AIR application and noticed a bug:When content is scrolled in the editor, images disappear and reappear.I embedded the editor both as a custom component and as a swf (with SWFLoader). The buggy behavior is exhibited only when the main application is WindowedApplication (AIR).Embedding the editor in a WebApplication  (<s:Application>) works OK.What's the deal???
I will appreciate any help. Thanks in advance.

    UPDATE:
After further investigation I have reached the conclusion that the TextLayoutEditor had nothing to do with these bugs,
rather it was the AIR 2.0.2 runtime in the new  Flex 4.1 SDK which I used.
    BUG DESCRIPTION:
    I have a TextArea in my <WindowedApplication/> that reads a <TextFlow> object from an XML string : contentTA.textDisplay.textFlow=TextFlowUtil.importFromString(xmlString);
An image element, and some formatted text (underline, background colored text) just disappear an reappear as I scroll up and down in the TextArea.
Again, the same setup described above works OK  as expected in the context of a Web Application.
I compiled with the new Flex 4.1 SDK  which has a 2.0.2 AIR runtime:this is the cause of the bugs.
I compiled my AIR application with Flex 4.0 SDK (AIR 1.5.3 runtime) and the problems went away.
Problem is not solved, though.I cannot export a release build and expect it to install with AIR 2.0.2 installed in my computer.
Thank you so much for your interest.

  • IFrame hack for IE6 in Tooltip Widget

The iFrame, that is called up in IE6 to cover form elements
doesn't seem to get placed right.
Obviously, this issue has to be viewed with IE6 since that's
the only browser that uses the iFrame hack built into the Tooltip
    Widget.
The following page shows some samples but the iFrame always
    shows in the wrong place:
    http://www.onuma.com/plan/test.html
The only way the iFrame almost matches, is when I place the
div tag containing the tooltip right behind the bold text:
    http://www.onuma.com/plan/test2.html
    I actually noticed that Adobe's
    Sample
Page has the same problem but since the background is white and
the page is pretty long, one doesn't notice it. When you look at
the page with IE6 and you scroll over one of the tooltip texts, you
can notice the scroll bar on the right of the browser window
slightly moving. That's because the iFrame gets pushed into the
    bottom of the page.
Is there any way to get this iFrame positioned correctly?
    Thank you,
    Thomas

Has anybody used the Tooltip Widget and tested it with IE6
with the standard SpryTooltip.js and SpryTooltip.css? Would it be
    possible to show some examples?
I'm having difficulties with the position of the iframe that
is displayed to cover certain form fields in IE6. This becomes
especially apparent when the background isn't white and/or the
trigger is a bit wider since the iframe seems to get positioned
always in the same relative position to where I add the div tag (or
at the bottom of the page if I don't use absolute positioning).
If anybody can provide me with a sample of the Tooltip Widget
being used on a page with non-white background or even with form
fields it would be very much appreciated.
I'd much rather ignore IE6's buggy behavior too but too many
    users are still using it...

  • Audio disappears in iMovie '11 --why oh why?

working on a movie for days and days.
movie is about 20 minutes long.
it's got a lot of transitions & slow motion speeds.
i waste a great deal of time with the audio.
on most of the clips, i use the audio from within the clip.
i additionally add some audio that was detached from the source/Events footage.
i added a voiceover and suddenly all the audio disappeared.
it still shows up visibly in the Project. -- the purple bars beneath the clips, and the show audio within the clips themselves. i can see the peaks and valleys.
i can see that it's there in the little audio monitor that's visible on the screen below the Project editing. when i play back the Project, it shows green/yellow/red bars as the audio "plays" somewhere inside iMovie's little world. but it won't let me hear that audio.
the sound is still *there* somewhere.
i've tried exporting / Sharing in Quicktime, media browser, and to iDVD, but the sound doesn't show up. all the tracks are soundless.
i have, of course, looked at the audio edit inspector on a sampling of the clips, and nothing is wrong in there. the volume is up to an appropriate level, ducking isn't clicked, etc.
i'm on Snow Leopard 10.6.8, a desktop iMac Intel duo, and the like.
due to my new experiences with a zillion *other* buggy behaviors in iMovie in the last few weeks, i have already: trashed the preferences, reinstalled iMovie, manually moved my project files out of the "iMovie Projects" folder and i only drag one back in when i am actively working on it (so iMovie doesn't try to have all the movies in memory at once... yes, this is a real thing! look it up. i couldn't believe it.), run disk first aid, backed everything up, exported using every possible setting i can find and basically executed every maneuver you can find on Apple Support and about 5 other websites. i have probably tried everything except flinging the entire thing out the window, which is on my list.
    any help would be appreciated.

i think it is just a bug, like so many other behaviors in this application. (someone in another thread suggested they just left this iMovie version to be horrible, didn't bother addressing any of our concerns even when discussed here, because they want us all to buy FinalCut!) i think i had to start over. :-(

  • Need key commands list - complete

can someone do me a favor and email me the clipboard output of the comprehensive key command list? i'm not in a position to do this myself right at the moment. if someone chimes up, i'll reply with the email address to send it to. no formating or anything is necessary.
also, for those that use key commands a lot and have some complex customization, what is your opinion on its reliability? my questioning is due to the possible utilization of a remote session of logic, receiving custom MIDI sysex commands to basically remote control functionality via MIDI. (i will be sending commands via TCP, but there will be a local server sending MIDI to the host machine) do key commands ever not execute? if you send a rapid sequence of key commands, do they execute in a predictable fashion? etc...

Why do you need to use Sysex commands? They're so much more complicated to program and keep track of...
In terms of reliability, sometimes I find that key commands "go bad". This is almost always a case of "key label" commands going bad and to fix the problem they need to be re-programmed as "key position". That's the only buggy behavior re key commands, aside from the bugs in the key command window itself. But that's another story. Here's the list:

  • Exclusive update release for Adobe Cloud customers

    Excuse me, Adobe.
Don't get this wrong, I personally have nothing against Adobe. Please know and realize that Adobe probably don't realize this, or simply don't have a heart to realize this by now. Adobe actually losing some valuable registered lifetime 'diehard' Adobe customers like other creative professionals and myself.
Yesterday I learned that Adobe released exclusive update release only for Adobe Creative Cloud customers with Illustrator's new package update. I find that very ironic approach, because I know that diehard Adobe Illustrator customers have request for it for years. Adobe basically ignored us, creative professionals, instead of us, focusing on Adobe Creative Cloud customers.
Rest assured, Adobe Master Collection CS6 is more likely my final upgrade purchase. It was a big slap in my face. I know that it is not just me, knowing that many other creative professionals are upset as I am.
Don't get me wrong, I wholeheartedly am (now was) a lifetime diehard Adobe customer.
Dear Adobe, just tell me if I am wrong. I just cannot justify the cost benefit analysis on advantage of Adobe Creative Cloud, where it is more of "renting" while many other creative professionals including myself prefer traditional way of upgrading through Adobe online store just as in the past and at present time. Many of us prefer "traditional" way of "owning" Adobe Creative Suite apps rather than 'renting' apps. In a long run, by owning traditional app/purchase do have super duper advantage over Cloud in terms of real cost of doing business. While traditional customers like myself still own Adobe apps even if when Adobe decides no longer support, we still own the legacy versions regardless.
So, what happens if one day, out of blue, I fear that Adobe eventually realize that Adobe Creative Cloud is not viable or feasible to continue. That will certainly make some customers not happy. What happens to traditional customers like creative professionals and myself spent huge amount of investment in traditional qualified upgrades, and then switched to Cloud.. then one day Adobe decide not to support Adobe Creative Cloud.. what does this means to traditional customers like myself owned versions of serialization numbers over the years - down in the drain and Adobe Creative Cloud 'temporary' annual serial number no longer viable, and force us to pay FULL traditional license all over again. In that case, that is where I am dealing with this concern. I just cannot possibly trust Adobe on that one. I do have huge benefit of doubt on that one.
For example, with Adobe decided to invest some of its resources developed new applications such as Adobe Flash Catalyst and few others in Adobe Creative Suite CS5. When Adobe released CS6, Adobe dropped Flash Catalyst. That is one of example on why I do have benefit of doubt on long term viability and feasibility of Adobe Creative Cloud.
Please listen to us, creative professionals out of our concerns.
If Adobe refuse to listen, include us in that respect, so be it. It is possible that Adobe eventually be losing many lifetime, diehard Adobe creative professionals.
To be honest, I am very disappointed with Adobe's attitude toward creative professionals' being diehard lifetime support and invested lot of our time, tools, and skills and everything... time and money. It is all down in the drain. Thanks!
    Have a fabulous day!

And customers fall for it like suckers.
Software development during the emergence of a new category has always been lucrative. A small handful of developers with a good idea sweat blood for a couple years building the core application. Once it exists, delivery is cheap and profit-per-sale is high. Users buy licenses for several hundreds of dollars each. Each new license sale costs next to nothing to replicate in terms of manufacturing. It's all marketing, packaging, and distrubution. Disks are copied and printed for less than $1 each. Printed manuals, of course, may cost $20 or so, depending on color, quality, etc. There is real overhead, of course, in developing good content for manuals.
When all this stuff was new software titles used to cost less, but shipped with installation disks and thorough printed manuals, and a set of added-value extras, like utilities, fonts, clipart. And new version improvements were quite significant and innovative.
But once the software category "matures," with each version, the prices go up; the bundled "extras" become fewer. The focus shifts toward continually look for ways to cheap-out on the customers in order to "improve" the margin for the stockholders, and "milk" the increasingly archaic and mundane software for all that can be got out of it. One way this is done is by turning real value into mere perceived value. Adobe is the worst offender in this regard.
Print manuals have become pay-extra, or non-existent. It astounds me that in the much-ballyhooed age of "information at your fingertips" the ondisk local help has become increasingly difficult and tedious to access. Now, the default behavior of the Help menu has even been modified to disuade users from accessing local PDF versions of the documentation to coerce them to go online for help files access (this from the company that is highly dependent upon PDF). Slow, tedious, and non-contextual as it is, PDF was bad enough. Having to go to Adobe's crappy "community help" system is ridiculous.
This is all promoted, of course, as "immediate access to continual improvement." And customers fall for it like suckers.
Look at the increasingly innane questions that occur  daily in this Forum. Newcomers ask the most basic questions, making it obvious they haven't even tried to read page one of the documentation. I've been at this stuff since the beginning. It didn't used to be this way.
Are they all lazy dolts? No. Documentation has become less accessible and less thorough.
Next, Adobe turns the online documentation essentially into blogs. "Live feedback"? "Continual improvement"? Baloney. Beginners clutter what should be authoritative documentation with innane comments. Questions get transferred to the User Forums, where Adobe sluffs off its responsibility for product support to its users; which more often than not turns into a time-wasting process of the blind leading the blind.
Of course, only a mere mention of the term "tech support" will suffice. Everyone knows what thas become.
Once you've eliminated the costs of printing, packaging, and delivering disks and documentation, and turned everything into electronic downloads (causing each customer hours of downtime--often even days futzing around with Adobe's horrible installers), what's next? Stockholders still want increased margin.
Software by subscription and web-centric automation--while still increasing prices, of course--has long been the holy grail of software developers. This is true of all the biggies, including Microsoft, and of course Adobe. But how do you pull it off? How do you convince the suckers?
Releasing new features to the buzzword "cloud" before making them available to perpetual licensees will be Adobe's attempt to "sweeten the pot" to con those who buy into the software subscription scheme. Time will tell how successful the ruse is for Adobe.
The truth is, though, in terms of actual quality of the product, (especially Illustrator) nothing has changed for the better. Look at the very features that we who choose to stay with the relative safety of a traditional license are so upset about: Bundle for output? Export embedded images?
People, how archaic, how old, how yesterdecade's news is that? This is "quick development" that can only be delivered by the "cloud"? Give me a break.
It's utterly laughable, as Illustrator's cobby, clumsy, over-glorified, under-delivered, decades-late-to-the-game delevery of practical functionality always has been. So what's the big rush anyway for features that are already literal decades late? Sheesh, guys, Illustrator is not the only game in town.
Consider: Since the release of CS6, how many posts have you forum regulars seen expressing excitement over the precious few actually new features, like grads-on-strokes? How many stunning examples of use of that feature have you seen users post?
By comarison, how many posts have you seen on complaints about performance and buggy behavior? And proportionally how many are still the endless stream of repeats of the same old questions from newcomers trying to make sense out of Illustrator's uncomparably unintuitive, cluttered, and confused interface? I see the latter largely increasing. And I take that as clear indication that Adobe's treatment of "newfangled" documentation is not working. (And, of course, that Illustrator's interface is still as hideously unintutitve as it has always been.)
Meanwhile, for the first time in too many years, I actually experienced again that new-purchase satisfaction of money-well-spent when I opened the Corel Graphic Design X6 Suite package to find a full-color manual with a hard-bound cover no less! Upgrade cost for anyone with a copy two full versions old? $200. Comes with 1000 OpenType fonts, huge clipart collection, truly useful utilities, and alot more.
I still get a thrill out of every new release of Xara Designer Pro. So much elegant functionality, such clean-running speed, so stunning results possible from that tidy, inviting, intuitive interface in so affordably-priced and fun-to-use application.
Meanwhile, Adobe upgrades have become more burden than pleasure. I actually dread them, especially having been suckered into the whole "Master Collection" thing. CS6 still sits on my desk uninstalled. I just dread having to mess with it.
Oh, but James! That's why you should buy into "the creative cloud"!
Well, don't hold your breath, bucko. If I decide to let CS7 or whatever just slide right by, I'll still be able to keep running the version I've got--without sending a monthly check to Adobe.
These days--when so many younsters who have never swung a hammer at a nail actually try to rationalize renting over home ownership; and when so many middle-agers rationalize making perpetual interest payments for the instant gratification of driving a new car every year--who knows; the "creative cloud" sham may actually succeed.
But not with me. Instead of watching money automatically fly out the window by itself, I'll be chuckling away, using whichever of my usual collection of 2D vector drawing programs I feel most advantageous--or most fun--for the task at hand.

  • Open letter to Cisco regarding the UC320 platform

    Cisco,
I have never in my life been exposed to a "production" piece of equipment with so many bugs, missing features and oddities as the UC320. While I am sure many of you are working hard to reign in the problems, this platform is an utter embarrassment that should be in the preliminary alpha stages, not a channel product being sold to end users.
It is clear that Cisco has little understanding of how SMALL business works and how SMALL partners work with small business customers. A larger partner may be able to string a larger business along with promises of bug fixes and feature additions while charging them to make things right and.or padding the overall cost to account for the callbacks. True small businesses don't have the time, patience or money to deal with problematic hardware. When a partner sells a small business a piece of technology, it better work (at a reasonable cost) or the technology and the partner are out the door.
I was extremely excited when this system was announced and saw great potential for small business customers and an alternative to the Avaya Partner IP and other platforms targeted at the same demographic. I jumped in and put a UC320 in the office of one of my small customers. This whole experience has cost me the trust of a client and is going to end up costing me $3000-$4000 out of pocket (hardware, labor, travel) to make things right with the customer.
As it stands, countless hours have been spent trying to get this system to operate in a reasonably stable and productive manner. At this time the UC320 system has been reset and reconfigured in KEY mode (this time using 2.1.3(0), as the problems with steering digits, call routing and redial in "hybrid mode" made the system more than a little cumbersome to use. Now in KEY mode, caller ID only works on some stations AFTER a call is picked up. On one station, incoming calls are somehow routed to the "Phone Monitor" buttons instead of the "Shared FXO Line" buttons. The user has to press the monitor button to pick up a call, but the call does not always ring at the station so she has to watch for the lights. While the caller ID functionality is a bit better after the latest firmware update, it is still far from working properly. These basic call routing problems are not reasonable and not acceptable, period. The customer is tired of "we are working on it" and so am I.
Other problems (to mention a few):
The GUI is full of buggy behavior. One example if many: The impendence matching dialog only works the first time around and then the GUI loses track of what it is doing and must be reset.
It takes 7-10 minutes for the GUI to load to the login screen over a remote connection. The UC320 is connected to a Verizon DSL, while not blazing fast it is a decent connection. Initial GUI loading on the LAN is almost as bad.
The IE9 product that ships with every new Windows computer is not compatible with the GUI. This is not reasonable.
The AA is somewhat unpredictable with regard to picking up calls and sometimes results in a busy tone and dropped call, even if the call is the ONLY call on the system. Sometimes the prompts are garbled and sometimes the AA does not even pick up.
Steering digit redial issue - still not addressed. Redial on hybrid mode is useless, as is the phonebook.
Caller ID only works part of the time, yet on every other system I have ever used, it works 100% of the time. This is not acceptable.
Answered calls on shared FXO lines show as MISSED on other stations with those lines. The workaround: remove the missed calls display feature. This is not acceptable.
Thus UC320 is not happy unless it is the only router, DHCP and DNS client on the LAN. The grayfield implementation appears to fail no matter what LAN topology and equipment are used. This device is far from friendly to the typical SBS or existing LAN with a dedicated DNS and/or DHCP server.
The handsets have a cheap feel to them compared to the Avaya and other competitors phones.
The sound quality of the ringtones is almost laughable if not sad
The speakerphone quality and overall voice quality are not as good as the competition's.
The filtering functionality of the logging feature does not appear to work properly
Firmware updates often result in a HANG condition where either the GUI needs reset, the system needs a physical reset and/or sometimes defaulted
Firewall port forwarding rule oddities where a rule is deleted from the gui but is still active in the firewall, yet the inability to easily use another data router to work around this problem.
The inability of the device to properly use the LAN port for INTERNET based functionality (Time for example) if the WAN port is NOT connected,
countless other 'issues" raised in the support forum and other venues...
These are ALL very basic functions that one would expect to be fixed BEFORE a basic telephone system platform is released for production. It is absolutely unreasonable for a CUSTOMER to have to put up with a system this buggy and it is absolutely unreasonable for a partner to have to devote this much time and money to getting system to work at even a very basic level of functionality.
To repeat the scenario: This config is as basic as it gets running 2.1.3(0) with (3) system phones, (3) users, (2) pots trunks and that's it. There are no odd call routing scenarios, no complex AA rules or schedules (in fact the AA is defaulted, including prompts). All (3) system phones have BOTH shared FXO lines (KEY MODE). Each and every firmware version has been tried and the system has been defaulted numerous times. The system fails to meet even the most basic expectations of myself or the end user and has become a sore spot between our company and a very good client.
I am somewhat baffled, if not outright bothered by the fact that this device is riddled with so many problems and the fixes are taking so long to be implemented, if at all. I have been asked (ordered) by the customer to get this "hunk of crap" out of their office and replace it with something that works "at no additional cost". I could not agree with the customer more...
    A very unhappy Cisco Partner.
    William Burnett

    To William (and Cisco,)
    Honestly, I like Cisco.
I like their  "openess" (you can find documentation and help on almost anything  anywhere), the contribution they make to industry by their huge R&D  effort (more than all their competition combined....or so I've been  told...), the accessibility and responsiveness of some of their key  people in the distribution channel, and yes, I like the ecosystem in  terms of support, tons of free education and sales support for both  their SMB and classic enterprise solutions.
Having said that, I thank God for people like William  Burnett, who I am sure opened the eyes of many partners about the things  that are horrendously wrong with some of the products in the SMB  portfolio, most notably the UC320. I think it is fair to say, that  William has effectively "killed" it (the UC320) in it's present  incarnation. That is, unless Cisco, decides to really rise to the  challenge and fix a product that at first seemed ideal for the small  enterprise, but which was poorly implemented in terms of QC and in some  cases design.
We certainly are not going to be touching the UC320  with a 10ft pole now Nobody wants (or can afford to) get a bad name by  selling "trouble" to your Mom&Pop shops or to people whose trust you  worked hard to gain and who are really depending on you to deliver. Not  in this economy....not ever.
Coming from a Nortel telephony background, its really  hard to accept that having to respond to trouble calls or complaints  continuously from customers when Nortel products worked so reliably. In  fact, Nortel Norstar is so reliable as a key system that people joke ,  that's why they went out of business, they couldn't generate enough  turnover in new sales on account of people holding on to their Norstar's  forever.
As a seller/installer/user of Cisco voice (UC540) and CME there are a couple recommendations I would like to make to Cisco:
1)Private line emulation - inability to transfer or conference calls on a private line.  (using the TRUNK XX command) on the CME/UC500 platforms needs to be  significantly improved in order to keep up with the competition:
for  one, when you select a private line and make a call you cannot transfer  that call. Every other system I have worked with allows you to do this.  This for me is a glaring "defect/design flaw". I spent a lot of time  trying to get this "fixed" as I couldnt believe that Cisco would just  omit such a basic function when all their competition  has it. (You dont  even think about this when dealing with other systems.) Its just  expected.
2)Private line emulation - Inability to reflect the dialed number in the Call Detail Records for calls made via a "private line". If you select a private line on the UC500 or  CME and make a call, the dialed number would not show up in the CDR. I  have programmed systems from Nortel (Norstar, BCM,CS1000), Avaya - (IP  Office 500, Partner Plus, and S8x00 Communication Servers) as well as  various systems from Mitel and
Panasonic .  The CDR packages for these systems are very well implemented and  documented. Cisco's systems are well documented as well, but this is an  area of the implementation where Cisco falls behind the competition. I am sure this can be fixed, but for some reason, despite a number of requests, it hasnt.
In  trying to understand why it is Cisco, with such a huge R&D budget,  can't seem to get some things working properly that the competiton has  long ago solved and moved on with, I have come to the conclusion that it  must be that Cisco propably didnt tap enough of the right (human)  resources when it was developing its voice portfolio, and the lack of  industry experience shows up in some random places. Sad to say, not  paying attention to some of these details, to real world usage  scenarios, makes what would be an otherwise super product, just good  enough.
Cisco is the biggest networking vendor on  the planet. People have a right to have high exectations of Cisco. Their  marketing also conditions users and partners to expect more when using  their solutions. While we accept that no one is perfect, not even the  mighty Cisco, I think most of the complaints and dissapointment  expressed in this forum, on this particular thread, are justified  because there is a strong feeling that if Cisco can be such a  trailblazer with their enterprise portfolio, that they should have  understood the importance of ensuring and enforcing good quality control  in the design and manufacture of the SMB portfolio. I honestly hope  someone from "Corporate" or high enough to make a differnce, looks at  this thread started by William and uses it to inspire the will to fix  what needs to be fixed to redeem the UC320 in whatever incarnation, in  the eyes of its partners (even former ones....such as William)and  customers. This is beginning to look like a textbook case of how not to  do product development.

  • Over-constrained palette in GIF export

Every once in a while, when I am exporting to GIF, Fireworks
seems to over-constrain the color palette. For example, I am
working with a button image that I'd like to export, which has two
subtle gradients, in ranges of gray and green. They are banding
badly in export. I have turned off Snap to Web Safe, I've selected
"Exact" as the export palette (which, as usual, reverts back to
"adaptive" but unusually hasn't loaded an exact palette). My
palette limit is maxed at 256 colors, but the palette tells me it
is only using 108. I've tried resetting the palette every way I
    know how.
Furthermore, when I export the same image from Photoshop
(having pasted in as a 24 bit full color PNG) it exports as a GIF
no problem. So I know that it can be done, but I don't want to have
to switch to PS just to export these images!
I've tried all of the preset palettes in FW to no avail. I
don't know why it is limiting itself to only 108 of the 256 allowed
colors, which requires the gradients to be banded. This behavior
pops up on me every few weeks it seems, and I can't seem to see a
pattern in which images are affected.
What's the story? How can I get the export palette to expand
to its full potential? Am I missing something, or is this just
    buggy behavior?

Use 100% dithering or export in JPEG format. If you think
    it's a bug or
would like to suggest an enhancement to the program, then
    fill out a
    Feature Request/Bug Report Form.

  • Mail "New Message" window retreats to background after drag and drop attachment from Finder to Mail "New Message", click, and Finder window stays in foreground even when not in focus

Hi, I'm surprised I can't quickly find if anyone else is having this issue. For me it has been going on since Lion on my 13" MacBook Pro 2011 and it's still persisting in Mavericks, and even still now that I've "downgraded" to a 15" MacBook Pro 2010 with Mavericks.  The behavior is odd and difficult to explain concisely. Basically, when I want to add an attachment to Mail, I'll Cmd+Tab over to Finder click and drag and Cmd+Tab back to Mail, and drop the attachment. At first it looks fine, but when I click in the New Message window where I just dropped the attachment, to move the cursor, it retreats to the background and the Mail Main Window comes to the foreground. Then, if I click on that, the Finder window that I just used comes to the foreground. Sometimes if I switched to another app before going to Finder to select the drag and drop, that other app window will appear in the foreground instead. If I click on the other app window that is now in the foreground, then the Finder window that was last used will come to the foreground. The only thing that seems to fix this switch-a-roo effect is Cmd+Tab-ing back and forth a few times, or click on the window "frame" at the top to move the window around.
The way to prevent this is to have my Mail Message window visible in the foreground side by side with the Finder window when the drag and drop occurs (this is a tedious extra step if mulitple windows are open, or to use the add attachment command in the menu within Mail. But it sure is annoying buggy behavior.
    Thanks
    Daniel

Yep, I get exactly the same thing when using Thunderbird mail client on my 2011 iMac running Lion. I've been putting up with it for at least a year, maybe longer.
For me it appeared to start after a Thunderbird update, so I figured that was the cause and couldn't find a solution at the time. However I've now noticed it starting to happen in Apple Motion 4 when dragging files from Finder into a DropZone in my animations. Motion remains the active program but the Finder window sits on top until I Cmd-tab out to a third open program (ie not Finder) and back to Motion again.
This is the first indicator I've had that it's an OS X issue.
Be great to find a solution as D&D is by far my preferred way of adding attachments to emails and similar tasks.
