Buggy ESPN Monday Night Football experience

Am I the only one who has a terrible time with WatchESPN on the Apple TV?  Specifically during Monday Night Football.
I am signed in using our COX account and trying to watch at work on my Apple TV 3 1st-gen.  I have a clean 10Mbps-download, 2Mbps-up (and it can use every bit of that), great WI-FI connection, and just updated to 7.0.1 on the Apple TV.  Constant video freezes while sound continues (telling you about the big play you cannot see) or no sound while video works, or both crap out so I have to constantly menu out and reselect the stream.  Then, when it recovers, half the time the video looks like it is running at double speed and is not synced with the audio.  Sometimes it works great for 5-minutes or so and then the video speeds up briefly and it looks like some kind of Benny Hill sketch.  I only use the ESPN app for this one thing and it has happened every time I have tried it this season and last, thru multiple OS updates.  To top it off, about every 10th time I get an "An error occurred loading this content. Try again later." error.
Is my connection too slow?  I do not have a problem with any of the other Apple TV functions I use (mostly Netflix, HULU and Prime).  The kids have no problem with the Disney channels when they are down here.
It is very hard to enjoy when I am constantly restarting the stream.  Plus it only seems to happen during a big play.
I love my ATV but this is driving me crazy.  Any ideas?

An unrelated comment;  I never thought I would say that I miss the music and photos they played during the commercials last year, as I watch the Prius add for the 50th time.

So it sounds like you have isolated the issue to WatchESPN.
There are some steps you can try here.

If you have playback issues with a content provider's services
In most cases, you can isolate playback issues to your home network, your broadband connection, or a possible outage with a content provider. To see if your issue is affecting multiple services or a specific content provider, try another service. For example, play a movie trailer from the main menu.
If the issue is affecting multiple services on your Apple TV, see how to troubleshoot playback performance.
If the issue is affecting a single content provider on your Apple TV, restart your Apple TV by going to Settings > General > Restart. If the issue continues, you might need to contact the content provider.

    ESPN has nothing to do with BT the slot used is controlled by TUTV. If they made that 24 hours then their service would not work which is about overnight and early morning downloads.

  • Night Football games in bad light

    Canon 7d - 70-200mm f/2.8 non is, monopod av mode 4000 iso, night football bad light, want better shots any help would be appreciated! I get some good shots but want better. Some are over exposed and some blurry. I'll take blame on blurry shots! Would like to stop the action better. Thank you.

    The answer is most probably "post processing". Using software such as Photoshop, you can make some pretty dramatic changes in marginal pictures.
    I shoot lots of football games but I am shooting the half time show. Try to get your exposure as close as you can. Even bracket shots if you are able to. I would suggest using AV not TV, however. Typically you are not after DOF so the widest aperture your lens has will be fine.
    When you are through, post process them in Photoshop or your favorite post editor, maybe PS Elements. There are even some freeware editors you can try if you don't already have one.
    Believe me, post is the answer.

    Often, rebooting, or deleting the waiting app and re-installing, will do the trick.

  • Facebook chat is buggy since last night

    As of last night my jaba account on messeges is very buggy. it keeps switching from showing my facebook friends names to numbers, then a few minutes it shows my facebook on line friends again but then switches to showing numbers so I have no idea who is on line from facebook

    I don't have a Facebook Account which makes it difficult to find out anything from their site.
    Even to find the the "instructions" to use Facebook Chat IDs in iChat you have to be logged in !!!
    Searching for "Facebook Chat Server Status" got me the following:-

    Nothing about the Status of their server at all.
    There also seems to be an item at Facebook called Server Status that seems to look at Users Servers.

  • Ehternet... PC to mac mini

    I'd like to use my PC for streaming TV shows and feed it to the mini. Seems the most reliable and fastest performer is to run CAT 5 ethernet in-between both the PC and mini.
    Q: how does one accomplish this?

    I don't have a tuner.
    Yes I want to view TV shows either wireless or hard wired from my PC to my Mini. The Mini does not have internet access, only the PC does.
    Now, I sit a my PC and watch TV shows that I've missed typically due to an addiction to Monday Night Football.
    I'd prefer to watch them in the comfort of my media room, on HDTV and 5.1DD. My Mini is used for audio(usb dac) and HT playback.
    As for a technique, I'm not sure of what options there are other than wifi 802.11"g". or, if this will provide good results?

    I have looked on your bulletin board - just don't see the answer I am looking for yet, so I will post a new TOPIC on this subject and see if it gets an answer
    I have a NEW iMac 10-5 leopard - but its not reacting correctly with two sites I use frequently --- www.webshots.com and myspace.
    I wanted to upload photos to these two sites - here is what I get when I try.
    I have the site open to upload - choose "browse" to find the files, then I select the files - click "Add" and NOTHING HAPPENS --- the files do NOT appear in the box intended for upload.
    I have switched and tried aol, safari, and firefox - none of these work - I can't believe that the problem is suddenly with "these sites" when I can do the work fine from my old PC --
    I went out on a limb - purchasing a huge (24 inch 2.8 ghz intel core 2 extreme -- 4 gb system) only for it not to work on two of my FAVORITE sites.
    I am a photographer and WANT TO UPLOAD my photos --

    having had a PC all my life, the external hard drive was connected to the PC - and I stored files there (in various named folders such as "September 2007 .. October 2007 .. and November 2007") within those folders I have my photos separated into other folders that correspond to the event that the group of photos were taken such as "steelers/ravens" for Monday Night Football game.
    When I uploaded photo files to webshots or myspace before on a PC - I just located the file - choose it - and it would be 'uploaded'
    I already uploaded the file you recommended for webshots - and I have sent webshots a request to give me instructions on how to use it - obviously they haven't answered yet - but truth be known, I don't understand how to use this program any better than choosing the file from my list of .jpg files to upload.
    Sorry if I am not getting it - I am trying!!

    A slew of recent DSLR releases from Nikon and Pentax all shoot 24fps for HD recording. Why?
    Well, apparently consumers complained that faster (30fps) speeds needed far more time and processing power to edit, and looked artificial. 24fps also helps to sync the shutter speed for low light shooting where these cams handily beat the $1,000 digital videocams.
    So 24fps is emerging as a dominant standard for low light, consumer video, in multi-function cameras. These cameras outsell dedicated videocams by about 25:1.
    The Canon S95 also shoots 24 fps. Nikon D3100. Pentax K-r. Fuji 300EXR. The Canon is even in H.264!
    And so on...
    That is a pretty hefty chunk of new unit sales coming down the pipe from major manufacturers. There's not even an option for 30fps unless you go Sony, Panasonic, or Olympus. Four big names are 24fps dominant now.
    So, how do we consumers edit our 24fps movies on our Macs?

You need more CPU horsepower to edit the DSLR footage as it is usually recorded in H.264 codec, which is an excellent recording and delivery format, but an absolute nightmare to attempt to edit. This is because it is so heavily compressed in Long GOP MPEG, which does not allow for editing without tremendous CPU power. To edit this footage, even in Final Cut Pro, you must first convert the footage to an edit friendly codec such as Apple ProRes. The "un-compression" of H.264 files (the "unpacking of the video", so to speak) results in converted file sizes that normally run between 8 to 12 times the size of the compressed H.264 file.
    So if you shoot a 1 gig H.264 file, you will need to convert it to a file that will occupy 8 gigs on you hard disk.
    As to looking artificial, does Monday Night Football look artificial on an HD screen? If anything, the 24fps frame rate actually looks less accurate - less like real life - but it is what we all grew up with seeing movies projected in the theater, so that look is associated as "cinematic". It is interesting to note that while in the US, primetime shows are shot with HD equipment at 24fps to get that cinematic look, in Japan, they prefer their primetime dramas to be shot in HD 1080i60.
    It's a matter of personal preference as to which one is best . . . and if your content is worth seeing, what does it matter what the delivery format is?
    24fps also helps to sync the shutter speed for low light shooting where these cams handily beat the $1,000 digital videocams.
    Yes the low light sensitivity, the larger image sensor allows for use of lenses that obtain the more cinematic limited depth of field. That is why many indy type productions are shot with the Canon 5D.
    There is also an explosion in quality support equipment for these DSLRs to be used as video cameras.
    So 24fps is emerging as a dominant standard for low light, consumer video, in multi-function cameras. These cameras outsell dedicated videocams by about 25:1.
    Well . . . that is an interesting statistic. I would say, based on a stroll by the camera counter at Costco, that cameras like the Kodak Zi8 or Flip Mino are probably becoming the dominant camcorder sold, but that is just anecdotal on my part. The Kodak Zi8 does not shoot 24 fps, but does shoot a very good looking 720p60 while selling for way south of $200.
    The Canon S95 also shoots 24 fps. Nikon D3100. Pentax K-r. Fuji 300EXR. The Canon is even in H.264!
    And so on...

    As I said, Final Cut Pro supports 24 fps (23.98 fps). But once you edit it at 24fps what are you going to do with it? Other than showing it on your computer, or on the web where it will get compressed even further when uploaded to YouTube or Vimeo, and smoothness playback will be limited to the bandwidth your audience has, how will you watch it? If you burn a DVD, it will be converted to SD as DVDs are SD by definition.
    Most HD sets now sold are 1080P60, and will likely support a native 24 fps rate, but you will need to go to Blu Ray for that. If you want to burn a blu-ray disc at a native frame rate of 24 fps, you will need to buy a Blu-Ray Burner and encoding software.
    Your 24 fps Blu-Ray will play in a supporting set top player at 24 FPS, but be aware +that as of this point,+ not all set top Blu-Ray disc player support "home made" Blu - Ray discs.
    There are other deliver options like the Western Digital Media Players -

    but I do not know if they support 24 fps. or not.
    The successful use of 24fps as a recording standard, at this point in time, requires a great deal of planning and an adherence to a very strict workflow- from capture to delivery.

    First, having a $240 camera require editing with a $999 FFCP is just apologetic nonsense.
    Second, most use H.264 MPEG-4 which is a far sight better than the AVCHD of Sony and Panasonic. These are the 2 emerging standards. There are no "easy" formats. What I am talking about is the fact that iMovie 9 is not keeping up with the standards.
    The simple reason for a switch to 24fps is entirely due to the dramatic increase in DSLR's as video tools at he market expense of dedicated videocams.
    Third, I've done video with the 5D. The issue for editing is that iMovie won't deal with it properly. The option to buy up to FCP is silly nonsense—we're talking about the most popular lines of cameras announced for Photokina 2010. iMovie needs to be able to handle 24fps and then do with it whatever. Many will gladly trade off the 24fps for low-light shutter speed compatibility. Low light HD video is far superior with a 24fps Nikon D5000 than it is with an HG10.
    Fourth, Kodak and Flip sell in the millions. The 24fps cameras from Canon, Nikon, Fuji, and Pentax will sell in the tens of millions. So Apple needs to get iMovie into a 24fps to match their consumer software with what Joe Consumer is buying. What matters is that iMovie stubbornly does not do 24fps, but the cameras importing into it do.

    I give up!!! its to much lagging going on now. i have well above average internet speed but it starts then stops all the time on the apple tv and is playing smooth on the computer. i didnt subscribe to watch on a computer. i subscribed to watch nba on my big screen tv. I give up, Monday night football is on with no lagging.

    I have tried the restart already.  I have not had apple TV before but i have had the NBA League Pass before.
    There is no NBA logo that shows up on my apple TV.
    My suspicion is that it is not availible in New Zealand.

  • Fios "ON The Go"

    When I first got my Iphone I was happy when I could download my Fios app and watch programs on my phone even if I was not at home.  I didn't even need to be connected to the internet to see programs.  Now the only way I view my programs is unless wireless internet is available.  When looking at WATCHESPN some shows are blacked out.  You didn't require those who had FIOS to also have Verizon wireless in order to watch Monday Night Football last year.  I used to brag about having FIOS and being able to enjoy on your phone but now it's to many problems.  Please go back to the way you used to be

    How do I clean up my new FIOS connection?
    The FIOS router needs to be in Bridge Mode to prevent the Double NAT error from occurring when two routers are both fighting with each other for control of the network.
    Unfortunately, the likely problem from the FIOS side is that FIOS support will either tell you that their router cannot be configured to operate in Bridge Mode, or if it can, they will not tell you how to do it.
    But, it could not hurt to check with FIOS to see if anything might have changed recently in this regard, so your first call would be to FIOS support.
    If you cannot change the FIOS router to Bridge Mode, the alternate plan would be to change the AirPort Extreme to Bridge Mode. If you are using the Guest Network feature on the AirPort Extreme at this time, that feature will not work correctly when the AirPort is set up in Bridge Mode.

    My iPhone 4 and AT&T shopping experience
    Some of you will most likely think I am crazy but I was up on Monday night thinking about purchasing my new iPhone 4. Sometimes I get excited over the little things in life but I really enjoy my iPhone. I was scrolling all the news sites, reading all the articles about the new iPhone 4 and iOS 4. I ended up going to bed sometime around 2:00 a.m.
    Tuesday started off with a text from my boss who is also a iPhone fan. He was telling me at 7:30 a.m. that he had completed his iPhone purchase and that the AT&T system was very slow. He also told me that he decided to have the phone shipped to his house. At this point I am mad because my boss ordered his iPhone before me. I knew I should have gone over the night before and disconnected his internet.
    I started my iPhone purchasing adventure around 9:00 a.m. only to find out that AT&T was down. I tried the Apple website and was shot down. I am not sure the exact time but about 1 ½ hours later AT&T was up and running again. I was getting excited again. I logged in and selected my new iPhone and was proceeding to check out when I got an error message. AT&T website was telling me I couldn’t ship my new iPhone to a PO Box and that I needed to update my address before I could proceed with my order. After thing for a long time about what to do next. I decided that going down to the AT&T store was my best choice.
    That drive as fast. The local AT&T store is not too far away. I walk in the door and was greeting by a young lady that put my name on the list. To my surprise I only waited about 10 minutes to see someone. I told the man that I was here to purchase two iPhone 4 today. One for me and one for a friend. I was surprising my friend with a new iPhone. The Man told me he would need to do the purchases separately. About 20 minutes later I walked out the door with two receipts for my two new iPhones. I was very excited. This was the first time I saved up the money and was able to pre-order my iPhone. I had planned for the last 4 months and I was going to be like all the other crazy people out there.
    I called all my iPhone friends and asked them if they got there order in. I even encouraged a few to get the new iPhone explaining to them how awesome the new camera feature was. For me, I was buying the iPhone for the camera. It is amazing how may picture and videos I take now. All of them on my iPhone. The new camera will be awesome.
    Fathers day was the day. This will be one of those fathers day I wont forget for a long time. I was at home, the kids were swimming and I was checking my email. I got 2 emails from AT&T. Both told me that my orders were canceled and I needed to contact AT&T for further assistance. At this point I almost fell out of my chair. After composing myself, I proceeded to call AT&T in hopes that I could get this issue resolved. I was on the phone for a very long time. The Lady I spoke to told me that there was nothing she could do. She told me my order was canceled because I used a DEBIT card to do my preorder. I was very frustrated at this point because no one told me I couldn’t use a DEBIT card. She called the store and and the store wasn’t very helpful. The store told her that everyone was told they required a Standard Credit Card for all preorders. You know, the ones that charge you interest and that you can never seem to pay off. Besides that fact that I don’t have any Credit cards, because I was a good by and got rid of them all 15 years ago. I used the only cards I have and own, my DEBIT card. I have a two checking accounts and I put my iPhone money in the second account so that the money would be there for the entire process. My phone call was over and I was told to take up the issue with the store manager. She told me there was nothing she could do for me. Very frustrated at this point. I asked to speak to a supervisor. A few minutes later I was transfer to a supervisor, I explained my issue and he told me there was nothing he could do.
    At this point my fathers day was ruined and my iPhone 4 dreams were over. The only thing I could do was start the entire process over or call the store manager on Monday.
    On Monday afternoon I called the local AT&T store (Turlock, CA). I asked to speak to the store manager (Mathew). I told him my story and he proceeded to look up my order. He again, reassured me that he was telling all his employees every ten minutes that they are not taking DEBIT cards. After explaining to him that his efforts seemed to have failed because I was able to purchase not one but two iPhones using my DEBIT card. I also explained to him that the failure in the process was his store. His store was the reason my order was canceled and I needed him to do something about it. The more I talked to him the more I felt he didn’t care about my issues. He was coming a crossed as very cold and had no solutions for me. The more I prodded him the less and less he cared. Finally, he told me he would make a few phone calls and would see what he could do for me. He told me he would call me back on Wednesday.
    At this point, I think I will FRAME my two receipts and hang them on the wall so I can be reminded everyday how AT&T don’t care about its customers. I will also print my two cancelation letters and include them in the frame. It is sad how the large corporations don’t seem to care anymore about the individual. They only seems to are about the 600,000 iPhones that were sold that day.
    At this point I am very sad and upset. It is amazing how I planned for the last Four months to purchase my phone on preorder day so that I could be like all the other crazy iPhone fans out there and get my new phone on the first day. I am starting to realized that there is not going to be an iPhone for me on Thursday.
    Today is Wednesday and I am dreaming that the local AT&T (Turlock, CA) manager will give me a call with good news. I was hoping he would tell me that he was going to set a phone aside for me because of the horrible experience I have had so far. Most of the day has come and gone. So I picked up the phone about 2:00 pm and call the AT&T store, I asked to speak to Mathew. He proceeded to tell me that there was nothing he could do for me. Again, I was getting the feeling that he really didn’t care about my issues and concerns. I have hit a brick wall and my day was going down hill. I am surprised how my emotions were getting the best of me. I was surprised how not getting my iPhone would affect me. Come on, this is only a phone.
    My day just got worse. My two friends just sent me a test message saying they just got there iPhones in the mail. Come on, it is only Wednesday and they already have them. Now they are sending me all sorts of messages about how cool the new iPhone is and how excellent the new camera works. Bah humbug, I didn’t respond to any of them. I was so completely upset at this point. Again, I was amazed as to how much this whole ordeal has upset me.
    One last try, I called the AT&T customer service. The lady was very nice to me and told me that she would help me but I know it wasn’t going to end well. In the end on Wednesday afternoon, I was shot down again. I decided it was time to move on or find something else to do. So I went to the movies and watched “The Karate Kid”. After the movie was over, I went home and went to bed. I think I ended sleeping for 12 hours before I got up on Thursday for work. Sometime during my evening, I figured I would try to plan another order for a new iPhone. Even though I am ****** at AT&T, I still want an iPhone. To my amazement, they wont let me, they are experience technically difficulties.
    Thursday morning. Today is the big iPhone launch. Normally every morning I turn the TV on and watch the news in the morning while I get ready for work. Today, no TV. I didn’t want to hear about all the new iPhone excitement. I am having a very bitter day.
    I am having a very bitter day but I love Apple products. After getting to work, I took a few minutes to try and preorder my phone again. And again, AT&T was broken. When started this process on June 15. I had huge hopes and expectations to get my new iPhone on June 24. Today is the 24 and I will be very luck if I can get my new iPhone by July 15. I am not sure when or if I will bother to purchase a new iPhone. I am not sure if I even care anymore.
    I am still ****** and will be ****** for a long time to come. AT&T has shown its true side again. I am only one person and AT&T has millions of customers. Sometime you need to remember the small people out there.

    I am not one to give up. So I called AT&T today. Now they are telling me they canceled my order because they were unable to fulfill my order. Basically, AT&T told me they sold out so they canceled my order so I can proceed to reorder again. It took them 4 days to realize this. I will be lucky if I get a new phone by Christmas. I am sure they will find a way to cancel my order again.
    Again, I argued, how is this my fault. I placed my order at the store around 11 a.m. Pacific time. My friend ordered his phone online sometime after me. He got his but my order was canceled. AT&T tried to explain to me that they sold over 600,000 phones, almost 500 per minute during there peak. Again, I asked, how this was my fault.
    I can understand over selling the phone. It is a great product. There is no reason to cancel my order. You adjust my order and tell me you will let me know when my phone will be in. I would have been mad that my phone was going to be late but I would have survived. At least I would be getting one.
    At this point, I have no order and AT&T or Apple website will allow me to order one. I just want to get in the QUEUE for one.
    Frustrated.

  • The Good Wife and football time change - video recorder problem

    For the last 3 weeks I have been getting half of the Good Wife recorded because the football game on Sundays has backed up all the evening programs 35 minutes.  I am furious with CBS for extending the football game so people cannot record the programs. 
    I just spent one hour with a Verizon "help" person setting up the Manual recording for The Good Wife from 9:35 to 10:35 pm.  It looks like I may see the whole show next week but it says "not available" at the end.  I do not feel too confident that this will work and I cannot speak to anyone higher. 
    Does anyone have any suggestions?

    I have the same problem with Amazing Race -- every Sunday, CBS runs late with football which pushes back 60 minutes and subsequently everything else that evening.
    What I've taken to doing for any show on a channel which follows football (Sunday or Monday night) is setup a Series recording and then go back into the series a modify it and extend the End Time by 1 hour (I found most games only run over about 20-30 minutes but usually no more than an hour -- although to be safe you could add 90 minutes to the end if you really want to).  
    This results in recording the end of the previously show before the show I wanted to watch on nights when the game runs late which I can just fast-forward over) or an additional hour on the end of the show on nights when football somehow manages to end on time -- but that's not all them much space on the DVR and as a result I don't miss any of the show.
    I would love if one of these days the guide providers and the TV channels could provide real time updates that the DVR's could leverage and adjust their recording times on the fly, but alas that doesn't seem to be in the near future.   Of course, I've also complained to the networks that since football always seems to run over by at least 20 minutes -- why not just make the football time slot 30 minutes longer!  (and on nights with a shorter game, fill the extra time with an extended sports wrapup show or something).

  • Buying Appliances from BB has been the worst experience EVER

    Bought three applances from two different stores, a dishwasher from the King of Prussia, PA and the two others from Plymouth Meeting PA.
    So in order...
    1. Organize the same delivery date of May 30, about a week after I purchased it.
    2. Get a call the day before saying to be available between 3-5pm. Great.
    3. Get a call at about 12:30pm. I was out. I was told my dishwasher delivery was attempted. Other appliances ordered were delivered as scheduled.
    4. Spend about two hours on the phone on Saturday trying to get the dishwasher on Tuesday. I never got a confirmation call on Monday night.
    5. Spend about another hour trying to get the confirmation. It turns out it was not scheduled and the soonest it will be delivered is Wednesday.
    How can an organization be so dysfunctional? What does it take to get the dishwasher delivered? It's absolutely insane. I can't believe how stressful and frustrating this has been.
    It already cost BB the 128gb iPhone 6 I bought from the Apple Store on Saturday. It's also costing another $2000 in other appliances I plan on buying this week. 
    I will never go into another BB as long as I live. I will make sure that anyone else I'm related to does not go into one, either.

  • As of midnight last night calendar moved all appts up by 5 hours.

    Nothing has been changed on my iphone. As of midnight everything on my calendar moved up 5 hours. This is the calendar that comes on the iphone. I have checked all the settings to make sure everything is correct and I have synced with itunes as a double check. Everything is up to date and all settings are correct. Any suggestions what I can do next... other then deleting everything?

    I would expect it to happen. An appointment is in a specific time zone. If you travel the iPhone clock will automatically sync to the local time through the cellular network. So the local time will be different, but the appointment will still be in the original time zone, so it will show up at the time corresponding to its creation time zone.
    Normally you want this to happen, so if you have a conference call at the specified time you won't miss it.
    The iPhone is fairly primitive in its calendar management, however. With a Palm or Treo using an advanced calendar like DateBk6 you can specify whether an appointment is tied to a time zone or should always be in local time (or should be in some other time zone).
    Outlook and Lotus Notes will also show the local time if the event is scheduled in a different time zone.
