Bugs in PDF workflow/ Quartz Filters?
I've noticed several issues with PDF workflows in Lion that seem to have gone wrong. Whether deliberately or not, I don't know.
1. If you Export a PDF from Preview with a Quartz Filter, that filter is not applied to the copy of the PDF in Preview's window, though the file on disk does get the filter applied. If you close and reload the PDF, the effects of filter will be displayed.
2. If you create a new Quartz Filter in ColorSync Utility, it doesn't work.
Even duplicating an existing system filter, like "Gray Tone", doesn't work when you apply it to a PDF document in ColorSync Utility.
3. If you do have any user quartz filters, they don't show up in Preview's Export file dialog, unless you copy them from ~/Library/Filters to ~/Library/PDF Services.
There are several webpages about this.
4. Save As PDF-X has disappeared from the PDF button of the print menu.
I have seen other webpages that mention this.
All these issues are on both of my Macs, so I don't think it's a local problem, though I would be grateful for any confirmation.

I am still running Snow Leopard due to things dropped in Lion.
I needed fax capability before I could move to Lion.
I was also waiting for the bugs to get worked out because I will lose some time when changing over.
I still have the menu item with Snow Leopard but the work flow for PDF-X is now broken as well.
I have not always had Acrobat pro.
I am famialure with inserting, extracting, and typing information on PDF documents as one would need to do in an office.
I had always used preview and the PDF-X "save as" feature to embed fonts.
I see there is a save as format to "PDF/X" in Acrobat Pro v9.0.
There is a settings button next to the save as box.
It has four different settings or flavors of PDF/x:
PDF/X-1a
PDF/X-3
PDF/X-4
PDF/X-4p.
Then there is a conversion box that allows input of a "conversion profile".
There there is a viewing or printing condition box as well.
As you can see I don't work with colors much. It is all about preserving the text and images in a document as everything is usually black and white or grey scale.
What setting for PDF/X would you suggest if "font" embedding was an issue and it was desirable to preserve the text and images as they were, without regard to color correcton.

With some PDF file created with Pages (iWork 4.2) in Moutain Lion, Quartz Filter don't work.
Example :
- Create a new doc with template "Personnal News" ("Nouvelles Personnelles in french) in "Newsletter"
- Print dialog, "PDF" button "Open PDF with Preview"
- In Preview, export in PDF with filter "Gray Tone"
--> Problem : The PDF created is not in "Gray tone" but in color
--> Same problems with others Quartz Filter, they do anything
- With template "School" ("Lycée" in French) --> Final PDF is a mix of color and gray tone !
- With template "Extrems Sports" (Sports Extremes in french) --> No problem, quartz filters works
If i create the PDF with page export and use "Preview" (or Color Sync utility"), Do a PDF export with a Quartz filters.
--> same problem
No problem with same manipulations before Mountain Lion (in Lion, ...). I think it's a Moutain Lion bug but it's very strange!
Has anyone noted this bug?

- I have the problem with a simple update of Lion in Moutain Lion and after a clean install of Moutain Lion.
- I have a boot disk with 10.5 Leopard and if i open the pdf file with Preview, the PDF file exported with quartz filter is ok.I think it's a Moutain Lion bug, i hope it will be fixed in the next update of Moutain Lion...
But, i have found a workaround for this issue.
With a PDF file with this problem :
- Open the PDF with "Preview"
- Print, button "PDF", "Save to PostScript Format"
- Open the PS file with "Preview" --> Conversion to format PDF
- Save the PDF file
- Reopen this PDF file with Preview
--> Export can be do with Quartz filter (sometime with filter "Gray Tone", Preview crach, but with filter "Reduce File size", no problem
--> If a use "PDF Clerk Pro" to export this PDF with quartz filter, all filters work. -
Quartz filters are not working (for PDF)
It seems that quartz filters are not working for me under Mountin Lion. I have tried to export, print, etc everything in Preview, Automator, ColorSync. It simply won't apply the filters to my PDFs.
Anyone experienced similar issues? Is it a known bug?I kinda have the same problem, except its only my custom filters that aren´t working in ColorSynch. The other filters get applied as usual, but I can not change any of the preformed filters within ColorSynch, and the "live update from filter inspector" doesn´t work if I try to apply changes or use my custom filters.
The custom filters I have, were created prior to my upgrade from snow leopard to moutain lion.
I´ve understood that there has been multiple problems with the filters in lion ++
If there isn´t a quick fix to this, does anybody know of any programs I can use to apply filters without having to buy Adobe Pro, my use is not for simply decreasing file size, but mostly for editing colors prior to prinitng. And its not sufficient to use the preformed filters unfortunately. -
Quartz Filters Not Working Mavericks
I have a Mac Book Air running the latest OS. I created a document in Pages 5. Printed it to PDF then opened it in Preview to apply the Grey Tone filter. I export it and choose the filter, but it doesn't apply. I can't apply any filters, at all.
Any ideas?I found this work-around:
The solution I realized involves the following:
Right click the PDF file you desire to work with and then select "Open with..."
Select the "Colorsync Utility" application
The Colorsync Utility will open up with your PDF file
At the bottom of Colorsync Utility status bar, you can select the quartz filter you wish to apply (including any custom ones you made)
Press "Apply"
Save the document
I hope this workaround can hold up for now. I do admit I miss the ability to see and use my quartz filters right out of preview.

Does anyone happen to know why the "quartz filters" in this thread just trashed a number of my pdf's with images in them? I have some images that went from color to a very bad black and white and some color images that went to all green with no definition.

I've got hundreds of pdf's that I have printed in the past year (from images and from scans) and these are anywhere from 10 MB to 900 MB in size). I've been basically scouring the forums for a solution and I finally found the above thread only to find out it is trashing my files when I run it.
Apparently the text only files are fine?
Anyone on the Aperture forum competent to give me a heads up on this because this one is making it hard to get work done since I can't email 66 MB files through my email pipe.
Is there a paid solution that will let me downsize these (and print them) to a manageable size without worrying about trashing them?

But no one has offered any help there either, I'm afraid. What happens when either you or the client prints the pages in question? (I'm curious because I can get graphics to appear properly, but they either don't print or the image prints with a gray screen over it. I think I may be having a different problem than you....)

Seems with every major upgrade, Apple breaks the Automator Watermark PDF Workflow.

If the said error – ValueError: depythonifying 'pointer', got 'str' – is raised at the line:
provider = CGDataProviderCreateWithFilename(imagePath)
I'd think it is because imagePath is not a C string pointer which the function expects but a CFStringRef or something which is implicitly converted from python string. Since I don't get this error with pyobjc 2.2b3 & python 2.6 under 10.6.8, it is caused by something introduced in later versions.
Anyway, the statement in question may be replaced with the following statements if it helps:

Flyleaf and end paper aren't shown up in pdf workflow
Hi
I want to order a book, but I'm hesitating. The book jacket appears on the pdf workflow but flyleaf and end paper don't. Instead of this page two reproduces a white ground with the book title on it.
Should this be so ?
Aperture theme is modern style and big hardcover.

Export PDF Workflow with Applescript and CS3

I am setting up some PDF workflow with Applescript.
On a given moment, as my script runs and after getting some user-input answers to questions in some dialogs, my script tells InDesign CS3 to open the Export Adobe PDF window for the current document. I copied and pasted that small part of the script:

When you run this small part of my Applescript, InDesign opens the Export Adobe PDF window (as expected) waiting for me to click on "Export". That is exactly what I want, since the user is given here a last opportunity to change some values (for example page range, or spreads). When all is set, the user can click on Export to close the dialog and finish the script.
Problem: I was hoping that the Adobe PDF Preset "somePreset" would be selected in the first pull-down menu of the Export Adobe PDF window when this window is opened by the script. Unfortunately the last used preset is always selected by default. Anyone suggestions or help?

Bertus Bolknak.My operators enter the page range and filename into a dialog box. Then I set those in the script. I use the Press Quality preset to start with and then set the changes I want into a export variable. I set things like bleed, marks, page range, etc.

I had that same problem with my laptop. Went to apple and they could not fix it. Had another issue and they told me to copy my iphoto library to the desktop. When I did that the white pictures were then visible on the desktop library. They said I had too much stuff on my computer. When I upgraded to I life 06 most of the pictures came back.

PDF workflow : pre-press preparations in Illustrator interfere : Suggestions?
Our packaging graphics group adopted a PDF workflow which has eliminated the clutter common of art file submissions. However, one print provider must preform additional preparations to the artwork, inserting supplier insignia and adding special press markings in addition to the customary trim marks and such. These final pre-press preparations are performed in Illustrator. Consequently, Illustrator ignores our PDF's embedded fonts. Unless the supplier has the same fonts installed, the PDF won't output accurately when it's saved/distilled again.
Any suggestions on how to retain a PDF workflow when pre-press preparations involve adding content?You might look at inserting these objects as a watermark in PDF format?
Your choice is slightly limited with Acrobat but Enfocus Pitstop might
help? You can create a page mark action which will detect the trim box
and then append custom information outside for the pre-press
requirements ...

Automator/PDF Workflow to create 11x17 pages?
Is there any existing Automator action or PDF workflow to print a standard Pages or Word doc, or 8.5x11 PDF, to an 11x17 workflow? I have a newsletter I've created using Word 2008 that is in the standard letter-size format. I can print it to PDF using the built-in PDF workflow, but what I would like to do is print it as a booklet using 11x17 paper folded in half. Basically, page 4 and 1 on one side, and 2 and 3 on the other. Right now the only option I know of is to save each page as an image and then use Pixelmator to save the images side-by-side in two 11x17 canvasses, and then use Preview to merge them into one PDF file to send to a printing company, but am sure there has to be an easier way. I would pay $20-50 just to get an Automator action or PDF workflow to do this step for me. Does such exist?
Wow! Thanks so much. I even have that workflow and never thought about it's usefulness for doing that with 8.5x11 pages. I use it all the time for 5.5x8.5 pages but for some reason never thought about this use for it. Awesome!

Quartz Filters - Negative PDF images
Trying to create a Reduced size PDF using the Quartz filter in Automater. The output PDF views in Acrobat as a negative image. Preview views the file correct.
I emailed the PDF to a client for approval and he opened in acrobat which showed the negative.
It seems to me that Preview is saving the file so it can only be viewed correctly by preview.

Bug in PDF generation with Report Builder CF8

there is a bug in the calculation of the left margin of a
page.
I upgraded from MX 7.02 to CF8. My "old" Reports worked fine,
but when I export them to PDF an print them the left margin is
different.
I'm using metric settings in the Report Builder. I created a
new Report with Left Margin 2 cm and a single Field with the left
Property = 1 cm (0.9879 cm). The printed paper with these poperties
where fine. I could measure appoximatly 3cm . But if I use Report
Left Margin = 1.27 cm and Field left Property = 0.35cm. The left
margin of the printed paper is only 1.1cm.
So it depends on the choosen Values of report left margin and
the left property of a field.
Does anybody else have the same problem?I found this posting as I have now "rediscovered" this issue. I came to the same conclusion - edit ALT TEXT for every image.
However, I think it is confusing that these paths of image file are not considered Personal Information that can be removed using the Inspect Document feature (I tried - was not successful). The list of things to be removed using this wizard is quite extensive
- and some of them less visible than these file paths.
It would be interesting to know if this is going to change with future updates of Word. Why is an ALT TEXT included at all per default? I think using the file path in ALT TEXT should be made optional. Is there a way to turn off this default embedding of
the full path?
As the OP I also used Office 2013 on Windows 7 64bit.

Serious bugs in pdf and doc view
Hello
I have looked on the forum for other postings on this and have not found them if they exist. I have had a Pre Plus for about six weeks (Verizon) and overall love it and am glad I got it. Hoping some things like GPS get improved (which I know is most likely Verizon not Palm) but this bug is the first thing that has the potential to seriously hamper my experience with the phone:
This week I took a work trip and before leaving added several (5-12) docs and pdfs to my Pre so I could access them on the fly during the trip when it was not possible or practical to use my laptop. This included some pdfs of directions and maps since the GPS is not up to snuff on the Verizon phone. Others were longer documents I needed to refer to when out in the field (ag related work visiting farms).
Here's the problem, which applies equally to both doc and pdf view:
-menu freezing: more than half the time the menu would freeze. In other words, not let me scroll. I could open documents on the screen but not scroll to see others further down.
-doc and pdf file freezing: the file would often work fine for a few minutes, i.e. I could zoom, move across the page with the touch screen, change pages, etc. with no problem. But then after a few minutes they would often freeze, allowing me to see only what was currently on the screen. Shutting down the app and reopening only worked sometimes. I often had to do that many (5-7) times to get it to work again. Maybe rebooting would have worked but the Pre takes way way too long to boot up for that to be at all practical in the context I was using it in.
Do these apps break down when too many docs or pdfs are loaded? I wouldn't consider a dozen too many so I am hoping the answer to that is no.
I really hope Palm figures this out and can fix it. (I hope they allow for more zooming while they're at it.) In the meantime, are there alternative apps to use for docs and pdfs? I would pay a reasonable price for it if it exists. I have only found ebook readers so far.

If you can see the items in the *Go To Folder> /.Trashes/502* window, then you apparently have *two different* .Trashes>502 folders. The items that keep re-appearing in your Trash icon window (the ones you did the GetInfo on) are in the HD>.Trashes>502 folder of your external drive. The Go to Folder command that I gave you is looking at the HD>.Trashes>502 folder on your startup drive. The Trash icon on the Dock may not look at that folder - trashed items on the startup drive normally go into Home>.Trash, a completely different place.
