Build large XML Docs within PLSQL

Hi..
I wondered what will be the fastest way to make a XML Document from a selection resultset and put it in a CLOB.
I think XSU isn't suitable to retrieve large XML (?)
Maybe I should build the XML within PLSQL manually by adding all Tag- and Element-Strings to one CLOB.
Can you please give me some recommendations.
Al

If you are using 9iR2 you might want to look at the new SQL/XML operators that provide an industry standard mechanism for generating XML from a SQL Query. Using these operators allows significant optimizations to take place in the database kernel as the optimzier is aware that the result set will be presented as an XML Document. The typical output of these operators is an XMLType which can be stored as a column in the database. There is not need to use a CLOB as such, as for not Schema based XMLType, the underlying storage mechanism is CLOB

  • Problem Loading Large XML Doc

    I'm running 10.2.0.3 on a Linux box and I'm having problems loading a large XML document (about 100 MB). In the past, I would simply load the XML file into a XMLType column like this:
    INSERT INTO foo VALUES (XMLType(bfilename('XMLDIR', 'test.xml'). nls_charset_id('AL32UTF8')));
    But when I try this with a large file, it runs for 10 minutes and then returns an ORA-03113. I'm assuming the file is just too large for this technique. I spoke to Mark Drake when I was at OpenWorld and he suggested I use Oracle XML DB, so I created and registered a schema and tried using sqlldr to load the doc, but it ran for 2 1/2 hours before returning:
    Parse Error on row 1 in table FOO
    OCI-31038: Invalid integer value: "129"
    I tried simplifying both the XML file and schema to just the following:

    Keep in mind both the actual XML file and corresponding XSD is much more complex, but this particular section is about 70 MB so I wanted to see if I could just load that.  I used the following sqlldr script:
    LOAD DATA
    INFILE *
    INTO TABLE schedules_tmp TRUNCATE
    XMLType(xml_doc)(
         lobfn FILLER CHAR TERMINATED by ',',
         xml_doc LOBFILE(lobfn) TERMINATED BY EOF
    BEGINDATA
    /tmp/schedules.xmlThis worked fine on a small doc - loaded correctly and I could query it fine - but when I tried using the 70 MB file it ran for a couple of hours before dying with a memory problem.
    So what am I doing wrong? Is there a better way to load a large file?
    Thanks for the help.

    Answers to your questions:
    Do you use direct load ? -> Yes. I tried again using UNRECOVERABLE LOAD DATA to try to speed up performance, but it still ran for a couple of hours before dying.
    Which DB Release are you working with ? -> 10.2.0.3
    Can you see if you can upload via FTP ? -> I added noNamespaceSchemaLocation to my XML file and ftp'd it to my XML directory, but it wasn't recognized. Is there something else I have to do?
    The change for unsignedInt should have code rid of the issue with the value 129. Did it ? -> I didn't try it again on the whole XML file (I'm just working with the schedules section), so I haven't verified this.
    I'm still stumped as to why sqlldr takes so long. I could write something to parse the XML file into a flat file and then use sqlldr to load it into a relational table, and the load would only take a few minutes. But then I wouldn't be using XML DB which I thought would be faster. What am I doing wrong?

    I have a process where there is a need to load large xml files (i.e. easily over 500k or more) into Oracle via an interface. Preference would be to use plsql or some plsql based utility if possible. I am looking for any suggestions on the best method to accomplish this. Currently running on 9.2.0.6. Thanks in advance.

  • Xerces: Creating large XML docs

    Hi
    I am using the Xerces DOM parser to create large XML files. However, I need to flush the output every now and then to a file since I don't want the memory to keep growing. I tried doing the following:
    _domWriter->writeNode(fileFormatTarget, domDocument);
    fileFormatTarget->flush();
    But if I do a flush many times, the whole XML file is written again to the file.
    Is there a way to keeping flushing the memory to the file and releasing the memory after flushing ?
    I tried:
    _domWriter->release()
    But I can't use the DOMWriter any longer.
    Thanks

    large amounts of data. For your case the only feasible option could
    be using custom SAX handler, IMHO.

  • Need sample to build one XML doc from 2 ViewObject writeXML

    I just discovered the ViewObject methods readXML and writeXML methods... really neat!.
    I want to package the output from a master writeXML along with its detail writeXML ViewObject into one big XML string to be sent through a queue to another component for further processing. My XML skills are few and new.
    Can anyone supply an example of how to get the composite XMLDocument created and the two writeXML pieces merged? I also need to put in some additional control elements, but I think I could do that part from other examples.
    Thanks,
    Roger

    Roger,
    Our writeXML implemenation will optionally automatically follow view links to render detail information into the XML document for you without "grafting" together two different master and details datagrams yourself.
    If you were working with EMP and DEPT, are you basically trying to create a composite "Department" XML Datagram with nested XML content for the employees in the department, or something else?
    To see what this looks like, create a default entity objects, view objects, and application module using our Business Components Package wizard for the DEPT and EMP tables.
    Right-mouse "Test..." on your AppModuleName appmodule and then "Show..." the master query in the tester.
    Then, select the "View as XML..." option and this will show you was the master/detail xml will look like (it's using writeXML under the covers).

  • Best method for encrypting/decrypting large XML files ( 100MB)

    I am in need of encrypting XML for large part files that can get upwards of 100Mb+.
    I found some articles and code, but the only example I was successful in getting to work used XMLCipher, which takes a Document, parses it, and then encrypts it.
    Obviously, 100Mb files do not cooperate well with DOM, so I want to find a better method for encryption/decryption of these files.
    I found some articles using a CipherInputStream and CipherOutputStreams, but am not clear if this is the way to go and if this will avoid memory errors.

    import java.security.spec.AlgorithmParameterSpec;

                    out.write(buf, 0, numRead);
                out.close();
            } catch (java.io.IOException e) {
    }This looks like it might fit, but there is one more twist, I am using a persistence manager and xml encoding to accomplish that, so I am not sure how (where) to implement this method without affecting persistence.
    Any guidance on what would work best in this situation would be appreciated.
    Regards,
    vbplayr2000

    I can give some general guidelines that might help, having done much similar work:
    You have 2 different issues, at least from my reading of your problem:
    1) How to deal with large XML docs that most parsers will not handle without memory issues
    2) Where to hide or "black box" the encrypt/decrypt routines
    #1: Check into XPP3/XMLPull. Yes, it's different that the other XML parsers you are used to using, and more work is involved, but it is blazing fast and can be used to parse a stream as it is being read. You can populate beans and process as needed since there is really not much "inversion of control" involved compared to parsers that go on to finish the entire document or load it all into memory.
    #2: Extend Serializable and write your own readObject/writeObject methods. Place the encrypt/decrypt in there as appropriate. That will "hide" the implementation and should be what any persistence manager can deal with.

  • Transforming single XML doc to Multiple XML docs

    I have a XML file with the structure shown below stored in the system.
    For now, I am just showing the empty elements for now -
    <DEPT>
    <ID>
    <NAME>
    <EMPLOYEE>
    <FIRST_NAME>
    <LAST_NAME>
    <PROJECT>
    <PROJ_NAME>
    <PROJ_ID>
    </PROJECT>
    <PROJECT>
    <PROJ_NAME>
    <PROJ_NAME>
    </PROJECT>
    <ADDRESS>
    <STREET>
    <CITY>
    </ADDRESS>
    <EMPLOYEE>
    </DEPT>
    I wish to load this file into multiple Oracle 8i database tables like DEPT,EMPLOYEE, PROJECT, ADDRESS
    which are master details, using XSU PLSQL API.
    My Problems/doubts are:
    1. I tried creating Object views but because of limitation of creating repeating collections
    in Oracle 8i I can not use that. It works only for one level of repetition.
    So I found out that it can be done by breaking xml to multiple xml documents.
    How can I convert this xml into multiple xml documents so that I can insert into different tables. Please provide your guidance and sample code for xslt file if possible.
    2. If I use XSLT how can I apply XSLT to external XML document that I am receiving (I cannot modify it).
    I found example of this using ORAXSL command line utility. But I wish to know if it's possible
    to appy XSLT within PLSQL procedure. If not, is ORAXSL only the way to do it.
    Thanks for the help. If possible pls provide Sample code
    Thanks

    Please refer to Steve Muench's book: Building Oracle XML Applications. It has good example for your case.
    Inside database, you can use xslprocessor PL/SQL package for XSLT transformation

    I want to get the infomation for that xml file. like mss_depart id=233, building xpath dyanmically for every id and loading

    Is there any other solution for that to read the data using sax parser only.
    I want to execute the xpath or data for the following way.
    //a_depart/@id ------> all the ids of a_depart tags if it returns 3 values say 123,124,125
    after that i want to execute
    //a_depart[@id='123']/b_depart/@id like this ...to retrive the values of all the levels ...
         I am executing following xpath for every unique ids at all levels.
         List l = doc.selectNodes(xPathForID);
         List l1 = doc.selectNodes(xPathForAttributes+attributes.get(j)+"/text()");
    But it is very slow and taking lot of time.
    Is there any other way to solve this problem. If any please mail me it is urgent.
    I am using jdk1.4 and jdk1.5
    Is there any support for sax parser to execute xpath in jdk1.5 direclty, with out using dom4j
    Thanks in advance....

    I doubt you will find a preexisting solution to your problem.
    SAX is usually recommended for processing big files (where "big" is undefined"). It works on big files by avoiding the messy problem of storing the data -- that is left as an exercise to you.
    DOM (and its variants) works by building a Document object as the head of the tree of objects for the entire contents. With DOM, you can then use XPath, because there is something to search that is already in memory. To use XPath, you seem to have two choices, build a DOM-ish tree, or if you can find an XPath processor (I'm not sure if one exists) that can process the XML file directly, but it will be slow, since you are looking for "all" occurences of an attribute, and this means you have to read the entire file each time.
    It might be worth exploring a hybrid approach -- use SAX to get some information, and build your own objects to store the data. Maybe a HashMap as the main index. But, that will keep you from using XPath, since you do not have the data structures it expects.
    A third alternative would be to look at JAXB. It builds Java code from a Schema of your data and then when you import the data, it creates the necessary objects and fills in values. But, I don't think XPath woll work there either.

  • OSB - Iterating over large XML files with content streaming

    Hi @ll
    I have to iterate over all item in large XML files and insert into a oracle database.
    The file is about 200 MB and contains around 500'000, and I am using OSB 10gR3.
    The XML structure is something like this:
    <allItems>
    <item>.....</item>
    <item>.....</item>
    <item>.....</item>
    <item>.....</item>
    <item>.....</item>
    </allItems>
    Actually I thought about using a proxy service with enabled content streaming and a "for each" action for iterating
    over all items. But for this the whole XML structure has to be materialized into a variable otherwise it is not possible!
    More about streaming large files can be found here:
    [http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E13159_01/osb/docs10gr3/userguide/context.html#large_messages]
    There is written "When you enable streaming for large message processing, you cannot use the ... for each...".
    And for accessing single items you should should use an assign action with a xpath like "$body/allItems/item[1]";
    this works fine and not the whole XML stream has to be materialized.
    So my idea was to use the "for each" action and processing seqeuntially all items with a xpath like:
    $body/allItems/item[$counter]
    But the "for each" action just allows iterating over a sequence of xml items by defining an selection xpath
    and the variable that contains all items. I would like to have a "repeat until" construct that iterates as long
    $body/allItems/item[$counter] returns not null. Or can I use the "for each" action differently?
    Does the OSB provides any other iterating mechanism? I know there is this spli-join construct that supports
    different looping techniques, but as far I know it does not support content streaming, is this correct?
    Did I miss somehting?
    Thanks a lot for helping!
    Cheers
    Dani

    Hi Dani,
    Yes, according to me this would be the best approach. You can use content-streaming to pass this large xml to ejb and once it passes successfully EJB should operate on this. If you want any result back (for further routing), you can get it back from EJB.
    EJB gives you power of java to process this file and from java perspective 150 MB is not a very LARGE data. Ensure that you are using buffering. Check out this link for an explanation on Java IO Streams and, in particular, buffered streams -
    http://java.sun.com/developer/technicalArticles/Streams/ProgIOStreams/
    Try dom4J with xpp (XML Pull Parser) parser in case you have parsing requirement. We had worked with 1.2GB file using this technique.

  • Query in a large xml file

    Hello,
    I'm trying to work with very large xml files which are created from csv files. These files may be very large - up to 1 GB ! Untill now I have managed to do several validations on these big xml files, and the only thing that works for me is SAX parser, DOM is out of the question because it fills up memory.
    My next task is to do queries on these files, smth like:
    select field1,field2 from file.xml
    where field3 = 'A'
    and (fileld4>'B' or field1='C')
    order by field2.
    I searched the net about finding out how to make queries on xml files (since I have never done queries on xml before), but I couldn't find which "query language" is best for large files. If I use XPath (XSLT) will that not cause me memory problems because XSLT represents the file as a memory object?
    My idea is to parse the file with SAX and check every row if it fits the where condition and then write it immediately to a result xml file. But validating the where statement can be very complicated without using some tool. Also the order by statement is another problematic issue.
    Does anyone have some more intelegent ideas about how I can do this? Please help! :(
    The xml file looks like this:
    <doc>
    <row id ="1">
    <column id="1" name="column1">value</column>
    <column id="N" name="columnN">value</column>
    </row>
    <row id ="M">
    <column id="1" name="column1">value</column>
    <column id="N" name="columnN">value</column>
    </row>
    </doc>

    Hi all,
    Thank you very much for your replies.
    First, saxon didn't work because it uses an in-memory parser, and that is what I was trying to avoid.
    Different database is also out of the question, because the customer insist on XML, and also there are some files that can never be converted to a database table, because eventually with some transformations thay are changed and are not completely like the standard csv format.
    I think that maybe http://exist.sourceforge.net is the rigth solution for me, but I will probably try it in the next version of my project.
    For now I have managed to make the project with only SAXParser and a lot of back - end programming and it works ok, althoug it was very hard to make it, and will be harded to maintain, so I will try to look at the eXist project.
    Thanks everyone for the help.

  • Validating xml doc using schema

    I was wondering if you can the following validation of an xml document using schema:
    <parent>
        <child>Jogn</child>
        <child>Hanna</child>
        <child>Blake</child>
        <childCount>3</childCount>
    <parent>the childcountValue equals the number of child node. is this possible using
    schema or do do i have to use an application to do this?
    thanx in advance

    thanx dvohra, but i already know how to validate schema using a parser.
    I'm looking for a way in the schema that specified thhat the total number of child elemnt equals to the integer value of the childTotal element. I don't even know if this is possible. If possible, what (tag) would i use. i don't need answer..hint would be nice.
    my other solution is to write an application that use a SAX parser to parse the xml doc. Although this is relatively easy, i would like to keep the validation within on file (the schema)..rather than have it be in the schema and a ContentHandler.

  • Build a xml editor using swing

    I would like to know a simple way to build a xml editor using swing. The editor should present the xml in a tree structure, THe user should be able to modify the xml in the editor and save it.

    Try reading this from [The XML Tutorial|http://java.sun.com/j2ee/1.4/docs/tutorial/doc/JAXPDOM4.html#wp64247] for discovering how to display the XML tree first, this is the first point to build a XMLNotepad like solution.

  • XML Parser for PLSQL and BIG5/UTF-8

    I'm trying store data in traditional chinese submitted by IE5 (through oXMLHttpRequest.send() and javascript), I tried both 'encoding="BIG5"' and 'encoding="UTF-8"'.

  • Still problems serializing xml-docs with xml-parser for java v2.0.2.7

    Hi !
    I'm using the Oracle XML Parser 2.0.2.7.0 and get some problems when serializing the XMLDocument.
    In one class (DOMOut) I parse a xml-file with the oracle.xml.parser.v2.DOMParser, then obtain the XMLDocument and write it to System.out
    In another class (DOMIn) I fetch the XMLDocument from System.in, search for a given Element and print it's TextValue (if existing) to System.out
    That is where the error occurs.
    I get the XMLDocument from System.in but the returning NodeList from doc.getElementsByTagName() is empty. [nl.getLength()==0] even if it shouldn't be.
    Look at this code and output:
    [DOMOut]
    DOMParser parser = new DOMParser();
    parser.parse(url);
    XMLDocument doc = (XMLDocument)parser.getDocument();
    ObjectOutputStream out = new ObjectOutputStream(System.out);
    out.writeObject(doc); out.flush();
    [DOMIn]
    ObjectInputStream in = new ObjectInputStream(System.in);
    XMLDocument doc = (XMLDocument)in.readObject();
    doc.print(System.out);
    NodeList nl = doc.getElementsByTagName("Name");
    System.out.println("Length of NodeList: "+nl.getLength());
    if (nl.getLength()==0)
    System.out.println(argv[0] + ": not in this document!");
    else {
    XMLNode node = (XMLNode) nl.item(nl.getLength()-1);
    System.out.println(node.getNodeName() + ": " + (node.getFirstChild()).getNodeValue());
    This is the relevant code.
    I javac both classes and then do this:
    java DOMOut xmltestfile.xml > xx
    java DOMIn Name < xx
    And get this as output:
    <?xml version = '1.0'?>
    <!DOCTYPE course [
    <!ELEMENT course (Name,Dept,Instructor,Student)>
    <!ELEMENT Name ((#PCDATA)*)*>
    <!ELEMENT Dept ((#PCDATA)*)*>
    <!ELEMENT Instructor (Name)>
    <!ELEMENT Student (Name)*>
    ]>
    <course>
    <Name>Calculus</Name>
    <Dept>Math</Dept>
    <Instructor>
    <Name>Jim Green</Name>
    </Instructor>
    <Student>
    <Name>Jack</Name>
    <Name>Mary</Name>
    <Name>Paul</Name>
    </Student>
    </course>
    Length of NodeList: 0
    Name: not in this document!
    Has anyone an idea?
    If I do all this stuff without serializing it works.
    If I do not search for argv[0], but the string "Name" it fails.
    If I do search for "*" it works fine!
    I'm very confused could anybody please help me a bit??
    Stefan.
